  1. Excellent power move, Sarah. No notes.

    1. i don’t think sarahs as ambitious but imagine if she also ended up making connections and showing off a pic of her eating with tony and the dean at some dinner party with other ‘higher ups’ or so and showing raidah outta spite lol

and i assuem they have a decent/not the worst relationship but imagine if some ‘important’ person’s parents had a toxic relationship unless raidah would be too blinded like “I don’t care if you hate your father, make up with him for my benefit” at a manipulation attempt

      1. I had to give up on your post. May I suggest commas and periods?

        1. That wouldn’t actually be enough, despite the paragraph break that’s already in there. Look:

Nope, it still unravels into incoherence. anon must have been drunk or very, very tired.

Edit: Why doesn’t <blockquote> work anymore!!!

        2. they do a better job hthan i do most f the time

    2. I dont love Tony as a character so far.
But the silent, satisfied grin he gives his SO in p4?
Silently supporting her vicious stealth-burn ….. does make him considerably more sympatico. The man has some sardonic depth of scoff hidden behind the crew-cut.

      1. It’s that he’s not an idiot, he sees through her like a glass door. He knows he’s the dean’s son and that people will try to use him – didn’t he mention something like that in an earlier comic? And raidah obviously wants something with the pathetic attempt at small talk.

And maybe Sarah has mentioned their conflict at some point in passing during their relationship, too.

    3. Just thinking of another Sarah scene (comic named ” stringent ” )

Dina: Sarah, you’re the most evil of us, do you have a plan?

      Sarah: I’m not evil.

Dina: You are smart and you are mean.

No idea why that popped into my mind.

      1. “Look, I’m a supervillain. I’m just a supervillain who happens to be on your side.” – Sarah, probably

    4. Being “actual nice” is very possibly the best possible own for the situation. I like it when Sarah gets petty and involved in drama, also. It’s cathartic.

  2. The alt text is Sarah talking to Joyce after she first walked in on her “doing laundry”

    1. Unfortunately I can’t seem to read the alt-text on the mobile browser since the new format was used.

      1. I find it works better on mobile in desktop mode

      2. Same. No alt text since new format

        1. Just press and hold on the comic. Still there, just new access mechanic.

        2. The method Vincent mentions is browser dependent, I’ve switched to Chrome for viewing the comic on mobile because the alt text didn’t show on the browser I used previously.

      3. “we saw you from across the room and hate your vibe” is what it says. ~<3

      4. Works for me on Fennec (mobile firefox) by long-touching. “we saw you across the room and hate your vibe”, a QC reference

        1. I didn’t catch that one. Link, plz?

        2. Dwampre Scorrigank

the night Yay scarpers from the club. It could be some other reference or not intended as one of course. Not sure if Jeph was referencing anything originally. Maybe this is just normal conversation, I wouldn’t know.

        3. Thanks. I usually read DoA on a desktop machine, but will be stuck with a mobile device for a few days soon.

        4. Not a QC reference, it’s a trope about a couple looking for a third (more specifically, about a het couple bothering a woman, assuming/hoping she’s bi and into 3somes). I only heard it as a joke, but it was already doing rounds before the QC strip.

        5. Dwampre Scorrigank

          Gotcha thanks for that baclground

  3. Oh I like this! Just rub it in there, Sarah

    1. Dat sweet, sweet schadenfreude.

  4. Oh yeah. This one’s a keeper.

    1. Excellent choice of profile picture, Dot

      1. not beating those “Raidah’s secret alt account” allegations :P

        1. That’s because I’m Raidah’s secret alt account.

  5. Raidah’s still pissed she’s not on the cast page yet.

    1. There are ways she could solve that problem.

C’mon Raidah. Date Walky. You’d hate it, he’d hate it, it’d be great.

      1. Why would Walky want to date his mother? [rimshot.emoji]

      2. I think one of them would hate it but it would be a nightmare for the other… which one depending on how much Raidah would skew toward trying to warp Walky’s behavior to fit her image vs. trying to warp her own behavior so Walky doesn’t catch on to how terrible a match they are. I have to admit it could be hilarious. But I really don’t want that for Walky.

Raidah on the other hand can make like many species of woody plant and self-pollinate.

(oversimplification of my actual thoughts about her)

        1. That last reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Spider Robinson’s first novel, Telempath.
          .
“I said something along the lines of ‘be fruitful and multiply’, without actually implying a partner.”

        2. Dwampre Scorrigank

          Hah!

  6. Sarah and Tony are an attractive couple.

    1. Sarah’s attractive. Tony is a rectangle.

      1. you show his big beautiful tits the respect they deserve

        1. I’m a lesbian so. No?

        2. IM ALSO A LESBIAN IM JUST BEING PLAYFUL BECAUSE I LIKE TONY…………….. SERIOUS THOUGH DONT DISRESPECT RECTANCLES. ITS MEAN

        3. He has to stay in shape, since he’s an athlete.

          Rectangular is a shape.

        4. Put some respectangle on that rectangle

      2. I think his smile is very sweet. Plus he’s a short king.

        1. Is he short? Or is he just average height and Sarah a tall Queen?

        2. Both! He’s just a bit taller than Joyce (who Willis has stated is about 5’4″), if I had to wager a guess I’d say he’s… 5’5″/5’6″ which is shorter for your average man. Add in that Sarah is taller and you get a short King and tall Queen combo

        3. I do not expect this ever to be specifically addressed in the comics because why would it be, but if Tony is under 6′ and built like that… what position does he play?

        4. Hoop, Tony could be good at quarterback or running back. Lower center of gravity; quick running speed.

      3. Some people are into rectangles!

        1. I could go on about all the lovely types of quadrilaterals out there, but people would probably think I’m a square.

        2. It’s hip to be square, or at least Huey Lewis says so.

        3. I see you’re working all the angles here.

  7. Hahaha, I love it! Rub it in, Sarah, rub it in!

  8. tony is so right sarah is so gorgeous today im going to throw up. sexiest couple in the comic tbh

  9. Sarah has never felt more pleasure in her human life (assuming she and Tony are yet to bang)

    1. Panel 2 is Sarah looking happier than I think I’ve ever seen. Is it Christmas?

  10. There is no heterosexual explanation for that look Sarah is giving Raidah in panel 2.

    1. “Your suffering pleases and amuses me. Both, at the same time”

    2. I don’t think that’s actually true in this scenario.

    3. What is it called when someone hates someone so much they’re turned on by their misery?

      1. Sarahfreude.

        1. Pfffffffft.

        2. I hurt my sinus snorting

        3. well struck

      2. Kissmesis. If you’re a Homestuck fan.

If you are, looks like Tony has no intention of mediating between Sarah and Raidah, guess he’s cool with it.

        1. spriteless aunty

No wait, Sarah is mediating between Tony and Raidah, so he’s grateful to get out of her blackrom range.

    4. It’s the velvet hand in the iron glove, the poisoned honey. Sarah is using good manners to wreck Raidah. She shows pleasant courtesy to someone who would use the tiniest bit of confusion or anger to break this couple up and get Sarah flunked out of school. They present a united front of confidence and coupledom.

    5. I should specify that I don’t actually think the intention is that Sarah is flirting with Raidah and moreso that I find joy in shipping them.

    6. Yes there is. Multiple really. Either “Schadenfreude” or “I know something you don’t know,”

    7. I wasn’t aware the gays had any sort of monopoly on “die mad about it, bongo”

      1. Sadly, Anti-trust laws aren’t what they used to be

    8. I think some of y’all might be taking that post a bit too literally. I was just being a silly shipper.

      1. I’m sorry, Yotomoe. FWIW I fully got what you were getting at.
        .
Also shipping these two is both valid AND fun.

      2. People get weirdly defensive when you jokingly call things queer

      3. For what it’s worth, I wasn’t trying to seriously disagree. I felt it was a cliche that didn’t fit well, and I guess I shouldn’t have thrown stones because it’s not like I replied in a way that was particularly clever or original

    9. That look is superior amusement. Sarah is smart and she’s fast on her feet. She’ll be a great lawyer.

    10. i feel like she’s more satisfied with tormenting versus anything attractive lol

  11. Bongo-y Sarah is the best Sarah.

  12. *sips popcorn*

  13. got me cackling like a madwoman over here

  14. Love this for Sarah. Good for her and Tony

  15. Please let her break him.

I mean like, ethically, into a good person. Mostly.

  16. Raidah looks around for Dorothy. She needs an easier target.

    1. i wonder how many ‘connections’ she’s actually made but at some points she needs to be focusing on her actual skill/future job or whatever as opposed to being friendopted by a nepobaby lol

      1. So far it seems like she’s got Dana’s ex-boyfriend, and maybe Jennifer?

      2. She does seem to know some actual lawyers, but it definitely seems notable that unless Carl’s parents are a big deal, Sarah’s got better connected friends despite not actually even trying

  17. Lol get her ass. I love smug sarah

  18. aaaahsahsdahshd my need to see Sarah crash the fuck out is pitted against the inherent satisfaction of seeing Raidah fail miserably.

  19. I have to check URL page, to see if I’m really at Dumbing of Age.

  20. not on topic technically but forgot to mention

got my second iron transfusion, only two more to go this month! :’)

    1. hell yeah 🙏🙏🙏

    2. Hell yeah pumping iron!

  21. The faint smile on Tony’s face says it all. He was ready to verbally beat Raidah down but got saved from having to do anything.

  22. Note how much Tony is enjoying how much Sarah is enjoying this

  23. awww they’re both smiling :D so cute

  24. Sarah really does look beautiful today. I can’t tell what she’s doing different. New vitamin treatment?

    1. Getting on Raidah’s last nerve sure looks great on Sarah!

  25. Sarah is enjoying this way too much and honestly good for her.

  26. Again, the dialogue is not sinking my Saraidah ship. Again, those two should KISS.

    1. This is a level of hatred that cannot be sustained heterosexually!!!

    2. That yuri would be so toxic, it would be radioactive

  27. This is honestly soooo satisfying

  28. Now I love how much Sarah loves this. But what I think I love even more is that Tony clearly sees *exactly* what Sarah is doing and is into it.

    1. Tony knows the kind of person Raidah is, that’s why he supports Sarah.

      1. He’s for sure an “actions speak louder than words” sorta guy

  29. It’s a great moment for Sarah, and that’s a good thing. Wow, finally we have a nice, satisfying comic strip.

  30. Aww, I was hoping Tony would have the last word and dismiss Raidah’s attempts full stop. But Sarah bursting her bubble works too.

  31. I Know Why The Mowed Lawn Screams

I genuinely love raidah but its so so so fucking nice to see sarah this happy. you love to see it !!

    1. I Know Why The Mowed Lawn Screams

also these are just some grade-a expressions all around, lowkey up there in terms of favorite strips this yeat

      1. I love Raidah’s :C in the last panel especially. Sarah IS indeed extra gorgeous today, smug suits her.

  32. Damn. Tony is right, Sarah looks so good today. Figured she’d be tired because of her not so subtle roommates, but she seems to be glowing here.

  33. The goldenest retriever boyfriend

    1. i think he’s more like a german shepherd boyfriend. buff, stern, will make you keep your distance if he doesn’t trust you. immediately heels as soon as it’s time to back down, because the situation is defused.

      1. Definitely closer than golden retriever at any rate.

  34. Normally wouldn’t say I’m a fan of Sarah, but she deserves this. I’m happy she gets to rub Raidah’s face in it.

  35. This is gonna backfire hard. Raidah now thinks she needs to save Tony from Sarah. Either that or Raidah now thinks Sarah is trying to get her kicked out of school.

  36. love how tony is quietly supporting tho i’m surprised raidah hasn’t approached him before if its not a secret he’s the deans son

    1. At the start of this exchange he says “it’s been a while”, so she probably has.

      1. yeah tho i guess that sentence implies it didn’t work out last time either unles she shifted her focus on getitng closer to other ppl

  37. Man he likes her so much.
Pretty sure Sarah is still gonna be WICKED reactive to this

  38. He remembers this part of high school. And loves it.

  39. Can someone in the cast die again soon?

    1. Nobody is most likely dying. Maybe Cliff. He’s old.

      1. I’m not consulting the RNG, I’m making a direct request. Likelihood is no god of mine and I will not be coerced into its worship.

        1. Old, yes. Cliff with two f’s, no.

    2. The only candidate for someone in the cast dying again would be Mike. And first he’d have to come back from the dead.

EDIT: Or Ross or Blaine, but I didn’t consider them cast so much as wrought-en.

    3. Joe’s triggered a death flag by agreeing to have his much needed “state of the relationship” talk with Joyce at a later date (Happens in the Dick Wolf “One Chicago” universe all the time), and with Dorothy being so overprotective of Joyce to the point that she sleep-guards Joyce’s room, combined with her natural hatred of Joe…

Dotty’s gonna kill Joe if she catches him with Joyce. Or at least severely wound him. The cast is showing some signs of their former Walkyverse incarnations, and Walkyverse Dorothy was willing to kill JOYCE ON THE DAY OF HER WEDDING so she could have Walky all to herself, sooo…

      1. Yes, I know full well Dorothy won’t kill Joe, I’m just saying that, of all the characters in the main cast, Joe is the only one to have triggered a death flag seen in television dramas. And I do think agreeing to talk to Joyce later is going to blow up in everyone’s faces when “later” finally comes.

        1. I don’t know why you keep trying to make “fetch” happen, here.

      2. Dorothy doesn’t hate Joe. He annoys her. Do you want to kill everyone who annoys you? (If so, seek therapy, friend.)
        .
Not sure why you’re so anxious for Joe to die, and frankly I find it a little worrisome.

        1. I think it was well beyond annoy, though I agree hate isn’t quite right. She saw Joe as dangerous and with good reason. All amplified for awhile by her jealousy over Joyce.

      3. Kindly keep your filthy “Dorothy is going to physically harm Joe” away from me. It’s vulgar and disgusting, and it has no place in my kingdom.

      4. Everyone leaving out the part where Walkyverse Dorothy was FULLY POSSESSED by the Head Alien at the time of said attack, or that she got a happy ending, in order to shore up their headcanons that Dorothy is going to have some sort of evil villain arc in DoA, continues to frustrate me.

        1. Beyond this, reducing everything to tropes and archetypes means you can’t really enjoy anything on its own merits.

  40. And then Dana appears and thanks Sarah for being a true friend and recognizing that she needed help, causing Raidah’s head to explode.

    1. “Also, my father and I really started talking and communicating for the first time when he realised he nearly lost me and our relationship is better than ever. Oh that reminds me Sarah, he wants to have dinner with you and Tony to thank you personally and offer you an internship for when you graduate, paid of course.”

    2. IIRC an older comic does imply that Raidah’s been in contact with Dana and that is not how Dana feels about things

      1. Maybe not then, but I mean, you can start college whenever you want. Maybe “doing her first year just after her mom passed” is ultimately just bad timing, and 5 years from now, she’ll recognize that. XD

      2. The only thing I can kinda recall is that Dana and her father had some kind of issue in their relationship which could have made this end badly for her. But no one actually knows what happened after she was removed from college.

        1. As far as I know, that’s a fan theory, with nothing canonical to show it.
Raidah did say at the start of last semester, that Dana didn’t feel she was in a better place, last she checked.
That was a long time ago and I don’t think we’ve seen anything else directly about Dana since.

  41. its at times like these I wish we could comment with images or gifs, because this deserves the cat pointing and laughing meme lol

  42. All curves of the mouths are exactly how they should be on that last panel. :P

  43. oh my god his adorable face, he likes her so much, sarah please do not fumble this bag

  44. Evil Sara gives me life :3

  45. Finally, Tony approved shenanigans.

  46. Panel 2…

    WOW!

  47. I was kinda hoping we’d get to see Raidah finish telling Tony her nonsense version of the events with Sarah’s roommate who got taken home by her dad and see his reaction to that. But whatever, this is fine I guess. I think it would be funny if he already knows about it, either because Sarah told him off-panel or maybe his dad told him about it at some point in the past.

  48. Despite the reservations about Tony being possibly “Lawful Evil,” seeing Sarah’s smug grin as Raidah stews in rage upon realizing that her plan’s been utterly thwarted just made me smile. It’s about damn time Sarah gets a leg up on her nemesis after she ruined her life for doing the right thing.

  49. God but i do love this for sarah. Brings me joy

  50. I figured if this was about Dana it would blow up in Raidah’s face. I honestly thought Raidah was smarter than this, though. I was expecting her to come in with something less obvious, like the Joyce/Jacob thing or the fact that Joyce and Dotty were the ones kissing at the protest.

Like, those also aren’t great angles for what she wants, but at least they would have been unexpected, and might have led to a falling out between Tony and Sarah and maybe added to the friction between Sarah and Joyce.

But bringing up Dana? That’s just a losing proposition. She just walked up to a bridge she hasn’t even crossed yet and pointed a flamethrower at it.

    1. Raidah may be smarter than this, but she’s not more experienced than this. She’s a freshman. Just last year she was a high-school senior. In high school, one good piece of gossip can be used to destroy someone several times, because you all stew in the same little social pot for so long. But Tony’s not from Raidah’s high school, and neither is Sarah. Raidah will figure that out… eventually.

      1. Isn’t Raidah a sophemore? The whole thing with Dana happened last year, before Joyce started her first term.

  51. Oh hey, Raidah! How’s it going? Is that a knife in your gut? Looks painful. I didn’t put it there, but maybe I could… help… TWIST… it a bit… how’s that? Feel any better?

  52. Raidah, dear, do you have a second sin of Sarah’s to speak of? Anything? This one piece of dirt is a good explanation for why you are not her friend, but it doesn’t affect anyone who wasn’t there. You have to actually get good at figuring out what a crime is, to be a lawyer. You would have been more effective talking her down for being a sour puss, rather than trying to win with half truths.

Willis you write everyone a little bit auti you know that?

  53. If that smile was any rounder it’d be a circle

    1. The same could be said for Raidah’s frown.

  54. I wonder if Raidah will try and throw “I helped your roommate get Robin out of jail” in Sarah’s face.

  55. One day, one day you’ll come when you’ll be the one against his solid assertions Sarah…
Maybe you’ll have yourself being the flexible mature one in the relationship.

  56. This has been great and I hope we continue to follow Raidah

I need to see where she goes that isn’t just reactive to the main cast

  57. Very good Sarah in panel 2 but the expressions in the final panel are all-timers.

  58. Reminded with some amusement that the last thing Jennifer said about these two to Raidah was, “[Sabotage?] It’s Sarah. For her, we can just sit back and wait.”
    .
(And she might not even be wrong, ultimately. Certainly I think the bigger threat to Sarah/Tony right now is their very different reactions to the police tearing all the dorm rooms apart.) (If anything, Raidah visibly trying to sabotage things is likely to make Sarah double-down on this relationship, ignoring the discomfort I think she clearly felt when Tony said he hoped the police had found what they were looking for.)

  59. behehe sarah does look beautiful here today

    1. Maybe the hottest she’s ever looked?

  60. Genuinely bizarre to me how many people in this comment section seem to think that Sarah did the unambiguously right thing with Dana.

    1. Ultimately I think it’s a byproduct of Sarah’s version of events being allowed to remain the final word for 15 years. Holding out hope this scene will finally inject some much-needed nuance.

      1. Probably doesn’t help that Raidah more obviously curates her account. There’s only one situation in which she let slip that Dana’s homelife wasn’t safe, IIRC.

        1. Someone else said that above. Do you (or anyone?) have a source?
I don’t remember anything but the early comment about Dana not being in a better place, which could be a hint or could just be that Dana wasn’t happy about being pulled out of school and probably cut off from the weed she was using as a coping mechanism.

        2. Can anybody show the strip where it says Dana wasn’t safe at home?

        3. She didn’t say Dana wasn’t safe, but I think it’s easy to misremember what she said as equating to that, esp since Jennifer memorably said those specific words (“her home isn’t safe”) about Ruth.

    2. I think most of it stems from their dislike of Raidah.

    3. Because this is what the comic is presenting to us and Raidah is presented as an unlikable antagonist.

      1. Yeah and I think it’s dumb that we have barely gotten any nuance to this situation in 15 years? That’s what I’m saying

        1. It’s because Raidah was originally written just to be an antagonist to Sarah’s storyline, which is why she’s a rather thin character that 90% of the time and is only recently getting more screen because Willis wanted to make up for the lack of Muslim rep in the comic. Her purpose was to explain Sarah’s antisocial tendencies earlier in the comic, having the one time she tried to stick her neck out for someone and getting burned for it.

Now did Sarah exhausted EVERY possible solution before going to Dana’s Dad? Maybe not, but if Willis added an extra scene to the flash back to her freshmen year of her trying and failing to get a roommate transfer would it really change much? The intended point was that nothing else was working because everyone else in Dana’s life was willing to look the other way so she only had the nuclear option left. Raidah was meant to be the exemplar of that, believing she new Dana better than the person who shared a living space with her, but ultimately cared less about losing a friend and more about losing a person to network with.

Now I don’t think that make Raidah a terrible character that must be removed from the comic, I’m sure there’s plenty interesting storylines to make by expanding her from a minor antagonist to a more front and center character, but it doesn’t change that, from her appearance in the comic so far she mostly been portrayed as two-faced, spiteful and only caring about others for their social capital.

  61. Oh yeah for those few who have been following my personal life saga for whatever reason, I got a new job and started last week. It’s a nice paralegal position at a botique firm and I’m making a cartoonishly larger amount of money than I was at my last job so I’m in a pretty good place now.

  62. The amount of ownage in this comic is pretty insane.

  63. I very much enjoy seeing Radiah not succeed

  64. I have never seen Sarah glow like that before and I unabashedly love that for her.

  65. I root for Sarah always so I’m into this

  66. Feeding off someone else’s pain again, I see.
