  1. Oh, that very last line hits hard. :(

    1. And I had managed to live my life so far without ever having heard of NewsMax. But no, I had to google it. And now I’m afraid to try to decode the alt-text reference.

      1. You’re safe. Alt-text is a reference to a very silly cartoon villain from a very silly cartoon superhero show.
        https://villains.fandom.com/wiki/Evil_Midnight_Bomber_What_Bombs_At_Midnight

        1. Rose By Any Other Name

          Thank’s for the link.
I’d honestly forgotten that my tendency to replace “that” with “what” is a very old Tick reference.

        2. YEAH BABY YEAH
          EVIL IS GOOD BABY

      2. Some days Fox just isn’t crazy enough.

        1. Newsmax makes OANN look like CBS Pre-Wiss, and OANN already made Fox look like CNN Circa 2017

    2. Yeah, same. In my case it was AM talk radio (and my dad.)

  2. Eh, Carol’s not that trustworthy.

  3. I aspire to be an atheist that makes someone’s daughter gay.

Bonus points that I’m trans to make it extra horrifying that it was “one of the transgenders” who did it.

    1. just open a ‘den of sin’ down the street from the closest catholic girls’ school ;P

      1. I have a friend who went to one and from what I hear they don’t need an external force to make them gay

        1. No, we rely mostly on internal mechanisms when making someone gay

  4. Listen to Jocelyne, Dorothy. This one isn’t your fault and it’s not about you.

    1. yes, it’s outstandingly clear that despite Dorothy’s sentiments, it is in fact Carol who took HERSELF away from Joyce — she chose to alienate her own daughter because she genuinely thought that was worth it to prove a point, same with Linda

people like Carol and Linda don’t ACTUALLY believe in “family” or “the value of hard work”, which of course isn’t to say that they don’t believe in SOMETHING
granted, that something is a bunch of racist, sexist, classist, xenophobic, authoritarian, homophobic, dominionistic bullshit,
but point being, despite their avid insistence to the contrary, those are what their values actually are, and they govern according to those values (-_-)

      1. also, obligatory FUCK ICE
        D:<

        1. Not even with someone else’s dick.

        2. With a reference about how much Newsmax means during the second Trump reich I wonder when Willis put this one in the buffer.

        3. With a bottle brush!

      2. Eh, I think it’s a bit much to say that what Carol believes in is the sexist/racist/etc. stuff. I think all of that is layered on top of the oldest and most powerful belief: Us Vs. Them. Basic tribalism, community is created by making an in-group and an out-group. If Carol’s daughter starts showing out-group tendencies, she has a choice: Remain in community with Joyce and become out-group from the rest of her community, or reject Joyce to maintain her other relationships. All of the religious/moralistic reasoning is just a justification for the maintaining of her in-group identity and community.

        1. That is a very good point. It may also be true that most people don’t actually know they are being tribal, or racist, or homophobic. They only know that they feel safer, or more in control and ‘together’ when in certain situations and never examine the motivations for that contentment. It’s all out of sight but active.

        2. I mean, Carol *did* get overjoyed that there was a racist family moving in, right? With the implication being that she’s no longer the most extreme one?

      3. They don’t believe in “family” as independent individuals, they believe in “family” as extras who make them (the main character of life) look good to their peers.

        1. Yeah, people like them say stuff like “family”, “freedom”, “peace”, “equality”, “liberty”, etc

they may be using the same English words and vocabulary, but are speaking an entirely different language than we are, based on a very different, fundamentally incompatible set of values

and “different language” is not even as big an exaggeration as you may initially think:

consider the language Serbo-Croatian, once spoken in eastern Europe just northeast of Italy. After a period of turmoil in the region, the language eventually split into Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian.

to this day they still majorly use the same vocabulary and grammar as they did when they were all “officially” a single language, but INSIST they speak different languages because of very important political, social and cultural differences which may not be understood by outsiders.

    2. Agreed, don’t sweat it, Dorothy. Pretty sure Joyce had already cut most or all ties with her mother long before you started smooching. It’s a little sad, but given how toxic the relationship had gotten it’s probably for the best.

  5. Saying I remember the Tick probably ages me severely, huh?

    1. Somehow one of Maurice LaMarche’s weirder roles, relative to a megalomaniacal rodent who sounds like Orson Welles.

      1. Wow, I am a big fan of voice actors, and Maurice LaMarche in particular, and I had no idea he was in The Tick, which I was also a big fan of.

        1. He’s one of those guys who’s in eeeeverything.
Like Richard Horvitz, but with more range.

    2. Dorothy is going to get banished to the Sidekick’s Lounge, isn’t she?

  6. Pretty sure bailing out Toedad put that relationship on the path to being over even if Joyce didnt consciously realize it at the time

  7. Dorothy. DOROTHY. You’re aware of the story. That woman agreed to let the guy who threatened HER DAUGHTER AND HER DAUGHTER’S BEST FRIEND with a fucking gun AND THEN DIVORCED HER DAD FOR DISAGREEING WITH THAT. Oh, and indirectly got one of her frien- acquaintances killed!
And also SOLD THEIR HOUSE TO FUND THE SAME PEOPLE WHO MADE ALL OF THAT POSSIBLE.

Jocey is damn right, you’re not even close to that top, methinks.

    1. Forget all that. SHE STOLE HANK’S DOG AND PUT HIM IN A KENNEL!

    2. Yeah, reading Dorothy’s last line my immediate response was “No, Dorothy. It’s more like ‘some mothers don’t deserve children’.” :P

  8. You’re selling Dotty short. She’s top 30, at least.

  9. I can’t tell if the part about newsmax is because their propaganda cut of the relationship with the mother, or because their propaganda is in favor of taking ethnic people’s mothers from them.

    1. In this case, it’s the first, IMO.

      1. ¿Por qué no los dos?

  10. Carol took herself away, Dorothy. When the cost for not having that happen is to suppress yourself it’s not fucking worth it.

  11. “You might be number 157 in the list of reasons.”
“Well, is there any way I can make the Top 100?”
“I am SO glad you asked!”

  12. “People shouldn’t have their mother’s taken from them.” Pretty audacious of Dorothy to say this, when half of her strips involve her stabbing, bludgeoning, running over, shooting, melting, and otherwise murdering specifically mothers, often while their children are nearby. Little fuckin’ hypocrite that she is.

    1. She’s trying to smokescreen that her next step will be to personally stab, bludgeon, shoot, etc fathers.

    2. That’s why you’re supposed to murderize the children first, so they don’t see their mothers taken away from them. Then you murderfy the mothers afterward. That’s just good slaughter stewardship.

      1. 🎵Crush the child
        Crush the child
Here come the parents, crush them too
Witnesses are a problem for me; I’ve been to jail many times🎵

  13. ….. Dorothy.

    Dotty. Come on.

  14. Newsmax says disengage from family members that don’t share your views? Literally?

    1. Should watch The Brainwashing of My Dad sometime.

    2. I think it is more the fact that they frequently target, attack, debase, and blame the lgbtq+ community for the wrongs in the world as well as other things that the conservatives generally dislike such as protesting, liberals, the youths, amongst other things.

Reinforcement and bolstering of negative beliefs basically. Could even say they radicalize them.

      1. Right wingnuts and reactionaries are not the same as conservatives. Newsmax is usually firmly in wingnut territory.

        1. Have you like, not been paying attention to literally any news the past decades? Conservatism as an general ideology had become basically completely merged with “rightwunuts”. It already partially was but it just fully went mask off since trump took office the firt time.

    3. She’s referring to mass detentions and deportations, which Newsmax insists are Good Actually.

    4. Nah, what this is referring to is the phenomenon of people “losing” family to far right propaganda brainrot. See posts all the time “My previously economically center-right but rational father started watching nothing but Newsmax [or even just Fox News] and now believes in [stolen elections, Jewish Space Lasers, whatever]”.

    5. Well, it is one of the first thing any cult does, so…

    6. Well, it is one of the first things any cult does, so…

  15. Dorothy really has a HUGE martyr complex if she’s blaming herself for Carol. I guess she never really met the woman. Maybe she doesn’t know better.

    1. I think it’s her insecurity complex. The entire strip, Dorothy has filtered objective reality through the lens of her being the most important person in the room. She and Jennifer are the same way in that regard.

      1. … What? Ok so we just making shit up now. Dorothy has plenty of flaws without needing to invest new ones.

        1. It’s not entirely untrue, but it’s phrased horribly.

Better said: Dorothy has always believed herself to be able to do anything and solve everything because she wanted to be president, and thus always centered other people’s problems through the lens of what she could do about it.

Now she doesn’t want to be president but she still has that instinct, so she sees this perceived problem, knows there’s no way to “”””fix”””” it, and sort of goes for self-blame. Which IS selfish, but not in a toxic or malicious way as people are certainly gonna try to spin it.

        2. Bill Erak said it better than me.

        3. Bill’s thesis could be summed up in the strip where Dorothy sees Amber injured in bed. She immediately tries to help, but Dina already took care of everything Amber needed, to which Dorothy is left wondering what good is she if she can’t do anything to help.

    2. https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/aggro/
      .
Feels pretty relevant to point out that this is the last strip Dorothy and Carol were both in.
      .
She’s, uh, missed a lot of Carol developments.

    3. One of Dorothy’s most consistent and problematic traits is that she feels personally responsible for fixing pretty much every bad thing that happens. Last panel of this strip pretty much sums it up. https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/chips/

  16. I like the cut of her jib.

  17. In regards to the Alt-Text: YEAH, BABY! YEAH!

  18. Hey, Joyce’s mom took herself away from them with her defense of toedad.

  19. That ship may have sailed.
But this “ship” has lifted anchor and is full steam ahead. And it sure is steamy.

Don’t give me that look. Everyone who uses the term Ship knows they have to double check before speaking.

  20. I forget; what’s Joyce’s mom’s name again? is it . . . Thorace-bog?
    Whatchamazog?
    Thorax-and-a-bog?
    Four-yacks-and-a-dog?
    Ah, laxative-log!
    No, that’s not it. Sapsucker-frog.?

  21. “Yeah, well tell Newsmax.” I’ll be honest, I have no idea what that means.

    1. Lucky you. They’re a far-right cable “news” channel that’s worse than Fox news.

    2. surprised willis didn’t put ‘fox news’ unless newsmax is more ‘popular'(?) in indiana

      1. As I recall, Newsmax really took off when Fox News announced the 2020 election for Biden. It’s where the people who think Fox News is too woke go for their information.

        1. Yeah, Newmax makes Fox News look like sober centrists, scary as that is to imagine. All part of the successful effort to push the Overton Window in this country well into fascism.

        2. ‘fox news too woke’ is not something i expected on my bingo card lmao

  22. Dorothy, Joss is right, You’d be doing Joyce a Genuine Favor by getting her away from that woman for good.

    1. Newsmax is a Far-Right “News” outlet that caters to lunatics like Carol.

    2. other than her disowning joyce and joss, how long til she ‘guilt trips’ her into showing up for holiday events or so

      1. Attempts to guilt-trip her.

Joyce likely isn’t ready for Dan McClellan yet, which is kind of a pity ‘cos internalising his delivery of “Nah, I’m good” would be just the thing for dealing with Carol.

  23. Maybe Dorothy is also adding the talk when Becky cried because her mom. It hit her hard. And her last nightmare was with her own mom…

  24. Dorothy.
This comic has been running for 16 slutty, slutty years.
I get that you have the only non-evil parents in the comic.
But we are well past the point where you should just be assuming that all parents are evil. Especially when you’ve met them.

What is this “Oh wow it’s so sad a Dumbing of Age character isn’t interacting with their parents” crap? Pay attention to your surroundings. Walky’s parents are literally in the fucking Klan and still top three parents in this series.

    1. I mean no, not really, meeting a few bastards is not enough to assume all parents are evil.

    2. the bar’s basically in hell. dina’s parents seem chill tho. and i assume lucy’s would be too b/c while she was also religious she didn’t seem as ‘intense fundie’ as mary/first year joyce

    3. …Just in case anybody takes “literally” literally: no, the Klan has never been mentioned or alluded to in this comic; there are no reasons to think Walky’s & Sal’s parents are members. And that’s apart from the fact that they obviously don’t accept Black people, and I’m not sure the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan take women either.

    4. I sometimes wonder what my friends assume about my parents given how messed up I am. (Actually my problems with external causes are all from unrelated people.)

      1. well, not like parents are the cause of all issues, it should be fine as long as you arent doing some super messed up shit lol

  25. People being surprised Dorothy has some sort of guilt complex going on when, guys, her reoccurring nightmares are about the fear of Joyce being hurt because of her, while also repeatedly seeing the face of a dead man whose death she feels responsible for. A persistent symptom of CPTSD is deep feelings of guilt. It doesn’t make sense, no. She isn’t responsible for these things, no. Trauma brain says differently, however.

    1. Yep! And it doesn’t require any delusions of grandeur, either. Honestly: it does sometimes help to reframe the issue that way (pointing out that blaming yourself for every problem involves subconsciously thinking you must be capable of solving every problem and is indirectly egotistical can help puncture the shame cycle), but it’s not literally true that Dorothy has to have a huge ego in order to feel like crap for not being able to help in every single situation.
      .
Like. Unfortunately brains aren’t that rational. You don’t actually need to think of yourself as superhuman to blame yourself for things going wrong.

    2. Not surprised just. Wanna boggle her dumb lil 19 year old head. Like, girl shut up (affectionate). Irrational irritation on my part from being a little too close to 19 to fully disconnect from it, but a little too far from 19 to fully vibe with it. Like…I fully understand the a to b to c, it just annoys me lol

      1. I don’t really think it’s a matter of age, one might fell this way at any time.

  26. “I don’t like ’em putting Atheists in the water that turn the friggin’ Christian’s gay!”
    -Joyce’s Mom probably

  27. Oh, Dorothy. …The mom. Took herself away, is the thing. Sometimes mothers do that.

Best you can hope is someones on their kids side when it happens.

But Dorothy hates unsolvable problems and she hates being a problem.

  28. it’s ok, they can just go to those lgbt events where there are older gays giving away ‘mom/dad hugs’ :’D

  29. I’m sure Joyce and Jocelyne’s mom, with her politically conservative and fundamentialist Christian views, would probably incorrectly consider Dorothy a socialist. But I’m pretty sure Dorothy is not a socialist at this point. To be fair most Americans don’t know what socialism even means.

    1. i’ve seen some ppl conflate(?) it with communism

didn’t willis also have a comic in shortpacked of ‘historically accurate jesus’ saying ‘feed the poor’ and him being called a socialist for that

    2. I don’t think there is any serious danger of anyone who’s not a brainwashed fundie misunderstanding Dorothy as an actual socialist.

  30. It’s fascinating how having good parents makes Dorothy believe in so many terrible things are good.

    1. Unfortunately, good parenting doesn’t necessarily mean good politics. Sometimes it just means “my parents got propagandized by MSNBC instead of Fox News.”

  31. Yes yes this is actually about the decisions of an adult woman who alienated her daughter by making a long series of violent, bigoted choices on purpose yes.
Buuut if we’re gonna be blaming a teen anyway, this is technically one of the things Becky has over Dorothy. If you want the guilt, you’ll have to get in line lol

  32. re: alt text: YEAH BABY YEAH

  33. Dorothy, not every problem is your fault or yours to solve.

    1. Ok but have you considered that every tragedy is actually my fault and if i don’t agonize about it i don’t deserve to be happy? (Depression brain talking)

  34. Carol already proved that you can literally point a gun in her daughter’s face and she will still choose the church over her children. You can hop off the cross for this one, Dorothy.

  35. There’s that “what if I didn’t do enough” that is always inside of Dorothy’s brain.

  36. I really appreciate the reference to what might be my favourite episode of The Tick.

  37. Joyce and Dorothy love their martyr complexes, don’t they

  38. Ow, this conversation hits close to home for me. In later years I found out that my late mother hated my partner because they had ‘turned him into a democrat and introduced him to gay people’. Oh mom, you have no idea how long ago THAT ship had sailed.

  39. Hey dotty remember that time her mother in law bailed a gun toting homophobic kidnapping maniac out of jail, after which he immediately proceeded to kidnap y’all? Something for which she showed no remorse?
    .
Like I get where she’s coming from with this but like. Girl. You cannot let your self loathing and martyr complex center you *here*. You know that relationship was practically already over

    1. You’re not wrong in that Carol is a monster who is 100% responsible for ruining her relationship with Joyce. I think the thing that’s being overlooked by a lot of these comments is that Carol is still willing to have a relationship with Joyce. As things stand Joyce is the one who gets to make that decision. But if Carol sees Dorothy as converting Joyce into a Satan worshiping socialist lesbian and cuts contract, then that decision has been taken away from Joyce. Now of course that’s still Carol’s fault for being awful, but being Carol’s decision instead of Joyce’s makes it feel really different.

      1. Maybe, but honestly, we’re way past the point where that’s inevitable. Even if she dated a guy and didn’t let on she was bi, she’s not going to keep pretending she’s still a believer, she’s already stood up for Becky and she’ll do the same for Jocelyne when that inevitably blows up. If Carol’s going to cut her off at all, it’s going to happen anyway.
I think Carol still assumes Joyce’s just being confused by the trendy LGBTQwhatever at college and she’ll come to her senses. That’s not going to happen and it’ll eventually come to a head with Carol, Dorothy or not.

        1. Sure, and if Dorothy was reading her life with a third person omniscient perspective like we are then I bet she’d have a more objective and rational perspective on it all. But this is about how it feels to be a 19 year old who comes from a good home with a healthy relationship with her parents and having to confront the fact that your friends don’t.

  40. I know of Fox News, is there a new one?

    1. Yes, unfortunately… they’re at least as far-right as Fox News, maybe more so.

    2. Newsmax has been around for years. They originally started as a right wing website in 1998 before moving to cable TV in 2014.

  41. A reference from The Tick? In the year of our Evil Midnight Bomber 2026???? <3

  42. A reference from The Tick? In the year of our Evil Midnight Bomber 2026???? <3

  43. A reference from The Tick? In the year of our Evil Midnight Bomber 2026???? <3
(sorry if this is repeating – I keep getting an error message whenever I try to post)

    1. The error message is currently normal, just hit back when you encounter it and refresh the page, you’ll see your comment went through fine.

  44. Joyce’s mom wasn’t taken. She walked away.

  45. Wait, is Jocelyn’s comment about socialism “my mom thinks any politics to the left of Regan is socialist” or is it that since she has gotten Dorothy to take a couple steps to the left she is hopeful that she can keep her moving in that direction?

    1. Why can’t it be both?

  46. If Willis makes Dorothy attempt to reconcile Joyce with her mother why they break up, temporarily or not, I will proclaim him the greatest web author ever.

    1. How much of the comic do you think is Willis “making” the characters do things and how much do you think is him just writing what the characters would do?
I only ask because I was reminded of other writers talking about how they will be writing their characters sort of take on a life of their own and sometimes one will do something they didn’t expect.

      1. A good character will have their own motivations. I know this as an author but the author can set up a mouse in a maze set of circumstances that leads them where you want them to go. BWHAHAHAHAHA.

  47. You’re a decent person, Dorothy.

  48. Dorothy don’t do anything stupid. It’s not your business. I think we are going to see why Joe was better.

  49. nobody took this one, she walked away all by herself

  50. Sold the house to bail the man who pointed a gun at her daughter out of jail, not out of some sense of Christian forgiveness, but from agreement.

  51. Lots of “people with anxiety are so narcissistic, thinking everyone is always watching them” type comments today. But it’s a Dorothy strip so that’s nothing new.

  52. Damn a lot of people just do NOT understand Dorothy at all. Of course she’s gonna feel responsible for Joyce and her Mother probably never speaking again. Because she’s not thinking logically. This is a very Dorothy moment.
