why doesn't sarah, the biggest of the sisters, not simply eat the other one
17

Sarah: AHEM.
Dorothy: So, UPDATE: While you were out, Sarah met Jocelyne.
Joyce: ...oh! So Sarah knows.
Dorothy: Yes, Sarah knows.
Joyce: SARAH! So you met my big sister!
Sarah: I'M your big sister. I mean... we're both... your big sisters.
Dorothy: As a result, a new intrafamily dynamic may have been launched.
Joyce: Huh. I see.

The Dumbing of Age Book 15 Kickstarter has reached the final 10 days!

As of this writing, we're just under $1K from unlocking the CARLA magnet!  and when will that mysterious other silhouette drop, who knows, not even me, maybe it was supposed to drop this past week and i lost track of things

  1. Jocelyne and Sarah should totally duke it out Street Fighter style for the title of Joyce’s Big Sister XD

    1. I’m thinking more Double Dragon. With the bat.

      1. I forgot about that game.
The bat swings. The kicks, the flips.

    2. No need for evil moms with so many big sisters.

    3. hear me out, hear me out: MUGEN

  2. She’s on her phone texting Jocelyne about a duel to the death over who gets to be the true big sister

    1. Hand grenades in a coat closet, or Minuteman missiles at 10,000 miles?

    2. She wants Jocelyne to meet her at the Dueling Arena in the forest behind the school at sunset.

      1. If we’re making yugioh references, Joyce and Dorothy look a little bit like the Three-Legged Zombies card.

        https://yugipedia.com/wiki/Three-Legged_Zombies

        1. That is the best/worst playing card I have ever seen.

        2. It’s one of the first I ever saw. Back when Yugioh was just coming out in America, Mcdonalds had little booster packs with their kids meals. The first one I ever opened had Three-Legged Zombies and Megasonic Eye.

        3. The upsetting thing about this is those zombies between them clearly have only 2 legs

        4. I thot it was referencing Shoujo Kakumei Utena. But then I don’t know from Yugio.

      2. Utena references always eat! ⚔️🌹

      3. Dueling to win a sister rather than the Bride

  3. When Hank finds out he has *three* daughters, he will be even more confused.

    1. Sarah’s Joyce’s sister, but that doesn’t necessarily make her Hank’s daughter. On the other hand, there is Becky.

      1. Seems like a bad deal for Hank. Becky’s parents have a 100% mortality rate, so far.

        1. Don’t we all, alas.

        2. Something happen to Leslie and Robin when we weren’t looking?

  4. there’s a new rules post
    .
it’s on the front page and everything
    .
it’s also crosslinked on the “read before posting page”
    .
and i’ll be posting it in the comments every night for a weekish to make sure folks see it
    .
thank you for your attention in this matter. no replies to this post are required on your part.

    1. THANK YOU
as much as I don’t always agree with your deletion choices, transparency like this is nonetheless an important step in the right direction 👍🏽

    2. I appreciate this, it’s always good to have some general guidelines in place.

    3. I’m really liking the Sarah/Jocelyne conflict so far, really excited to see where the Big Sister War goes.

    4. Whoa these rules are Wack’d!
(This is not actually a comment on the rules themselves or the moderator. I just love puns)

      1. A good pun is its own reword.

    5. concerning; “I reserve the right to modify these rules at any time and for any reason. If and when that happens, a comment will be made under that day’s comic.”
are the listed rules going to be updated with any modified rules, so that there are no rules hidden in a single comic from weeks ago?
      /gen

      1. plan is to update the rules post and then post a link to the rules post in the comments. you’re right that was worded ambiguously, i’ll go fix it

    6. Thanks! I think these are genuinely pretty good guidelines going forward, and it makes it easier to see where some of my own comments in the past could have been better as well. I appreciate the clarity here and the examples – I think it’s going to get a lot of negativity and redundancy out of the comments.

    7. If anyone thinks those rules are too harsh, just replace “it is getting deleted” with “that’s a paddlin’.”

(Just joking. The rules are clear.)

      1. Some people might be into that.

        1. Oh, baby.

    8. Not looking to debate to rules, just genuinely trying to understand the motivation here – what is the issue with asking “Why is a character doing [X] instead of [Y]?”? To me that feels like actively inviting analysis of the character and their motivations/story arc in the way that you broadly seem to be trying to encourage.

If someone wants to invite analysis/thoughts from others on a character’s actions is there a different way you’d like them to go about it?

      1. if you feel like you have an actual answer to “why x and not y” that’s fine. just asking the question in aggrieved tone (“why isn’t joyce talking to joe???”) is the issue

    9. This isn’t an excellent rules post. It reads a lot like pre-emptive scolding. The overall tone is impatient and put-upon, as though even posting these (honestly still pretty vague) guidelines is an inconvenience you’ve been coerced into and something you would rather not have to do at all.

In particular, “I understand the guesswork involved in figuring out why a comment was deleted is stressful for some commenters” is troubling, because every commenter I’ve seen bring it up had also mentioned being autistic in the same breath. It all comes across as if you simply don’t care whether people know what they’ve done wrong, and if they stop commenting altogether because of it, that’s an acceptable or even desired outcome. It may filter out the worst kind of poster, but there’s so much room for “acceptable losses”, and that blows.

      1. If I’m being openly, nakedly honest here, I sadly must concur

” It may filter out the worst kind of poster, but there’s so much room for “acceptable losses”, and that blows.”

it’s basically like anti-virus software, the more false positives it registers like this, the worst it is at detecting actual threats

the underlying thought process at the moment seems to be “I just got to buckle down and do what I must to root out the worst as fast as possible at this point — maybe it all still goes to shit, but at least this way nobody can tell me I didn’t do my job”

        1. I don’t like feeling like if I write the “wrong” comment it’s going to get deleted and I’m going to get banned. I don’t like second guessing any comments I write. It makes me not only not want to comment anymore, but it’s putting me off the comic as a whole because reading the comic and going “wow blank sure is happening oh boy I wonder what others think” is part of my enjoyment for this comic. What’s the point of reading if I can’t confer or converse with other commenters without wondering “is there even a point to saying anything?”

      2. all rules are pre-emptive scolding. the effect of posting a “no running” sign at the pool is identical to that of a lifeguard yelling “no running” at someone who’s running.
        .
if i come off as aggrieved, it’s because i am a little. i’ll admit my first rules post was hostile, but my second one was pretty okay i think and i still got yelled at for being unreasonable. i’m not asking for pity here, no one likes their moderator, but i’m frustrated! it’s frustrating!
        .
i do care whether people know what they’ve done wrong! i care a lot! i don’t want to be a jerk! but i only have so many hours in a day and i gotta put my own oxygen mask on first. it genuinely bums me out that folks like ngpz feel stress over this. if my language is clinical there, again, it’s because i’ve tried both “overtly hostile” and “baby gloves” and both of them made it look like i don’t care. i genuinely dunno what to do at this point.
        .
and like, the constant psychological analysis. “wack’d doesn’t care.” “wack’d just wants to look like she’s doing a good job.” “wack’d is on some sort of power trip.” i don’t get to express my true deepest feelings through the subtle art of moderating a comments section! it’s not a thing that happens!
        .
like, what would make the rules “not vague”? do people want a terms-of-service length document with subsections? i don’t actually know how to be clearer on this stuff than i already have been!
        .
and for the record, the threshold for being banned here is so high it’s not worth discussing. it’s, like, literally “calling someone a nazi” caliber stuff. i’ve banned maybe four people since i started and three of them are folks who never got their posts approved here to begin with. so that’s not something you gotta worry about
        .
anyway i don’t expect pity or sympathy here. taffy and ngpz and doopyboop, i know you’re all good folks trying your best. yotomoe too. like i explicitly reached out to starrymoon to say it’s okay if she has problems with how poc get depicted in the comic. i’m not deleting stuff because i think you’re bad actors, or because i wanna scare folks off. i’m just trying to find the sort of stuff that historically starts fights and generates negativity. i don’t wanna delete good faith criticism. but, y’know, if i’m gonna leave this up, i feel like i should get to address it. i dunno. i don’t want anyone to feel how i’ve felt in the past two weeks of having this job–like someone out there hates them and wants them to fail.
        .
anyway i hope everyone at reddit has fun speculating on how i’m having a meltdown or how i’m clearly unwell or whatever. fuck, man.

        1. thanks for at least sharing your thought process
my spoons are hella low rn b/c bronchitis, but I’ll just say
I don’t read the Reddit and neither should you
that place is like, KNOWN for their Nazi problem 👀

        2. I appreciate hearing that you think I’m a good person and will not be banning people willy nilly. I’m sorry if comments I made yesterday upset you. When that first comment of mine was deleted, I did become upset because from my perspective, all I did was express my opinion that Yotomoe’s comment wasn’t wrong. And in becoming upset, I’ll admit I was uncharitable towards you and I’m sorry for that. I will not comment anymore speculations or opinions regarding your modding, because I don’t want you to feel dog piled or hurt. I may not agree with your reasoning, but I’ll just have to accept your rules and either just keep commenting with good faith or just stop commenting for both our sakes.

        3. The rules are confusing to me because essentially criticism with the comic and, in relation, the author is immediately shut down. So I then question, is criticism with the depiction of POC (as of lately, more so WOC) going to be shut down too? Because it sure does feel that way. Having problems with the way POC are written doesn’t change anything unless voicing out those problems are allowed too. How does Willis get to hear the voices of minorites who also share the same criticism?

        4. @StarryMoon, a more than valid question, because this is literally the only reason Willis even still keeps a comments section at ALL

many other webcomic authors have burned theirs to the ground, but Willis keeps his around because of how liable he is for messing up as a white dude who writes a LOT about POC, WOC and many other kinda people who are a lot different from him.

        5. i’ve outlined specific modes of criticism that will be deleted. not only are “criticizing how minority characters treated” not among them, not only were they explicitly cited as exceptions in my previous two rules posts, but i explicitly waved through two of your posts on the subject, starrymoon. like, i saw your post on the subject while idly scrolling tumblr and told you, to your face, in no uncertain terms, that your comments were fine and i was approving them. i’m really struggling with how much more explicit and detailed i can be on this subject.
          .
i will say you can criticize the comic without criticizing the author. just talk about the content of the story without going “therefore willis is [insert negative quality]”. i think you personally are pretty good on this point! i think your comments have been useful and well-reasoned even when i don’t agree!

    10. Does this apply to the typical meme post of “Dammit Willis” whenever the author overturns the apple cart from time to time? I’m certain that it’s never meant to be anything but endearing

      1. nah that’s fine

    11. Good luck! i apologize in advance for my fat fingers accidentally tapping ‘report’ on innocuous comments

(unless it’s changed to have a confirmation secondary ‘are you sure’ message lol)

  5. Sarah deserves to blast whoever she wants with a rocket launcher.

    1. She deserves to blast whatever she wants with TWO rocket launchers!

      1. Always double tap with your rockets. Otherwise they’ll just keep coming back like a resident evil boss

        1. As a person who has never played the games, my favorite thing about Resident Evil is a mod somebody made for the remake of Resident Evil 2. It does absolutely nothing except replace the music soundtrack you get when being chased by Mr. X to ‘X Gon’ Give It to Ya’ by DMX. There are great videos of it online if you are intrested.

        2. This is why RE protagonists NEED the infinite rocket launcher, now more than ever

      2. I’d be fine with Sarah building a Shagohod and rampaging across the entire campus, demolishing everything in sight.

    2. Does she also get a shovel so she can do some rocket jump market gardens?

  6. There’s still time, alt text. There’s still time.

    1. Perhaps they are saving it for sweeps week.

    2. Personal headcanon: Jocelyne is a writer and therefore has the physique of a Victorian orphan dying of consumption. She’d be all skin and bones, deeply unpleasant to eat.
It’s actually one of the writer’s natural defense mechanisms, like with poison frogs.

      1. hey, you take her home, throw her in a pot, add some broth, a potato? baby, you’ve got a stew going

    3. Re Alt Text
Well, she’s have to work things out with Tony, but I’m sure Slipshine subscribers would enjoy seeing some trans sapphic content.

  7. Silly alt text, Sarah maybe bigger but Jocelyen is the older one! Clearly in the power dynamics of eating each other, Jocelyne would win

    1. ACKCHUALLY, sir, I think you’re going to find Sarah has class levels in Paladin and a proficiency with Bat (Baseball), whereas Jocelyne is a mere Artificer who took the “wordsmith” specialization like a total chump

  8. Immediate sibling rivalry is always healthy…😅

  9. Now, now, girls, everyone can be Joyce’s sister. Except maybe Dorothy for the obvious reasons.

    1. If the Internet has taught me anything, it’s that Dorothy is now Joyce’s step-sister.

    2. Read Hall is going to have levels of enmeshment never seen before!

  10. alt: first, we need to know the exactly meaning of “eat” here

    1. Sorry. I don’t have the 10 foot pole that I’m not touching that one with. ;-D

      1. why doesn’t the ten-foot pole, the largest pole, simply eat the others

        1. Hm. I’ll get back to you on that one.

        2. I’ve seen bigger honestly

    2. oh, it’s a reference to Futurama episode where Lrrr, ruler of the alien Planet Omicron Persei 8, offers his commentary on Friends:
“why doesn’t the biggest one (Ross) simply eat the other five?”

      1. I think they just wanted to make an innuendo.

        1. Oh, like oral sex.

    3. I was at an event last week, hosted in a primary school canteen, where above the serving area in big rainbow letters was the phrase: EAT THEM TO DEFEAT THEM.

We speculated wildly about both the intended, and potential subversive, messaging, with no conclusion.

  11. They should fight it out Kill Bill style.
And by that I mean they should meet in a park in the middle of the night wearing all black, Jocelyne’s (sp) hair in a black stocking, and have a knife fight.
And not that Sara should act like she’s about to make cereal for Dina to then shoot at Joss with the gun hidden in the cereal box.

    1. Well, maybe. But (most importantly) what theme music will be playing?
      (very important consideration)

      1. The Naruto battle music (I don’t know the name of the song).

    2. Kaboom Cereal shoutout!

  12. it’s been fun to see Sarah go from “i can’t stand this kid” as an initial reaction to “I am the big sister protector” in regards to joyce. and now she’s territorial

  13. In response to the alt text : As far as we know, Sarah doesn’t s,wing that way.

    1. Stormtide Leviathan

Idk, i’ve seen her hate-obsession with raidah

  14. (Amused by the title text–) Why doesn’t she not? Yes, you would think that there would be societal benefits to not trying to eat the smaller sister, but since she doesn’t not eat her she surely thinks those are outweighed!

    1. ((‘title text’ -> ‘mouseover text’))

  15. It is cute how Dorothy putting her hand on Joyce’s shoulder in the last strip—seemingly just as a light touch to show support for her having finally talked with Joe—has evolved, bit by bit, into a side-hug holding pattern.

  16. in re alt text: Well, Jocelyne might be into that. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

  17. Sarah wanting desperately not to let go of found family in Joyce because her own flesh and blood sister hurt her once upon a time— but it’s not like Jocelyne and Joyce are beefing. If anything these recent revelations of finding themselves have made them that much closer.

I also wonder since Jocelyne is also older, Sarah feels threatened that she’s not the voice of wisdom is Joyce’s life anymore—and said wisdom offered goes against what Sarah’s worldview.

Don’t mind me, I am just *musing*.

    1. I kinda miss Liz, now that you mention her. I wonder what she’s up to, these days.

      1. Good question. Y’know what? her showing up/transferring to rekindle something with Joe would make for an interesting wrinkle. But that supposes we’ll see her again.

        1. Or, based on her past history, if she got on well with Tony as Sarah continued to grow closer to Joe and then also exploded the Sarah/Joe dynamic with a revelation about her own past interaction with Joe at a suitably dramatic moment. Maximum mess!

        2. Yeah I don’t think Tony’s gonna like her very much

    2. Sarah’s back story would be nice to know. She’s the child of a first marriage, has acute anger/trust issues, a sibling protective drive a mile wide, and the impulse to actual violence when triggered. Joyce resembles Liz emotionally, enough to kick off the “Big Sister’ mode the very first week at college. But alas, while Mx. Willis may have a well-conceived origin tale to help in constructing Sarah’s character it may not impact the main story enough to require a flashback.
Good to see her back in such an active mode. I was afraid she was heading for a comfy retirement like Lucy/Jacob.

  18. The alt text brings up a great question.

    1. If Sarah eats Jocelyne like groceries, that’s probably going to sour her relationship with Joyce. Most people don’t like their siblings getting eaten, and Joyce is known for violently opposing threats to her family. Sarah may have to eat Joyce as well, to avoid a fight.

      1. SARAH VORE ARC

        SARAH VORE ARC

        SARAH VORE ARC

  19. Next chapter: Jocelyne becomes a big sister to Liz. Sarah is completely relieved to be relieved of her big-sister-to-Liz duties and absolutely displays no hostile territoriality at all. Nope, none at all.

    1. “Your problem now.”

  20. Oh yeah we never really did see how that interaction between Sarah and Jocelyne concluded after Dorothy entered the pictured and made her awkward housing land development analogy.

  21. Ffff these losers are so cute.

  22. An intrafamily dynamic that launched a thousand ships.
…I meant that it started a war. (sheesh)

  23. Look, not all problems can be solved by eating them.

    1. That’s quitter talk, you fucking morsel.

      1. I think my similar reply failed to post earlier but wanted to make sure I complimented “you fucking morsel”, it’s such a killer line and also really rolls off the tongue (lol)

    2. Problem: Too many Kit Kats.
      Solution: Eat the excess.
      Boom.

  24. SArah : “my dreaded rival”

  25. And suddenly Joyce has more sisters she can handle. :P

  26. The Queer Agenda [frog memes]

Love that the stack of newspapers is still lurking next to the doorway in the background. Bidding its time. Waiting until it can eat someone when they least expect it.

    1. Chekov’s stack or object persistance?

  27. They are taking being attached at the hip really literally!

  28. We expected to get a new romance polycule. Instead we got the big sister polycule.

    Nobody saw that coming.

    1. Nobody expects the Fannish Inq…
      Huh.
(trying to come up with pun on spanish or fannish inquisition, and polycules…)
((gets out whiteboard and dry erase marker))

  29. Sarah can’t handle bein the second place big sister

  30. S: “I was your big sister first.”
D: “Well, the timeline is unclear; it depends when Jocely–”
    S: “FIRST.”

    1. Chekhov can fuck off and stay there. That S.O.B. has a lot to answer for, and none of it’s good.

      1. “Nuclear wessels?”

  31. I mean you’re the one that makes the pornographiques, Willis….

    hahaaaa, sex jokes

  32. Wasn’t sure how to send this across, but would it be possible to link the “read before posting / Wack’d rules to not get whacked” in the Leave a Reply box? That way, they would never be buried in the comments or a news post.

  33. The rivalry between Becky and Dorothy to determine who is Joyce’s best friend has been replaced by a rivalry between Jocelyn and Sarah to determine who is Joyce’s big sister.

  34. I’m pretty solidly on Sarah’s side regarding who gets to claim the mantle of Big Sister. For all her misanthropy, Sarah is the one who was around for the biggest and most violent events in Joyce’s life, and was consistently fighting for Joyce throughout. She also lives with Joyce, and importantly, has to live with Joyce’s decisions. She isn’t always a good influence (case in point: pointing Joyce at Jacob like a cruise missile, an incident which kinda prefigures the later cheating arc) but she’s done more good for Joyce over the run of the comic than Jocelyne has.

    1. I do think Jocelyne has had several standout moments as a big sister and mentor. Her talk with Joyce about being careful about when and how she is angry, for Becky’s sake, is a great example.
And Jocelyne also had a real barrier to being more present for Joyce: the uncertainty of coming out to her and not knowing how she’d react.
Overall I do think Sarah has been MORE present and helpful to Joyce, and I think she’s being a more mature voice of “hey you’re not doing right by the people who care about you” recently. but I also think Sarah is unnecessarily turning it into a competition. There’s no reason not to share! They don’t have to be mutually exclusive big sisters.

    2. What powers does the Big Sister Mantle give you?

(Probably should be one of those paired items with the “???? of Little Sister.”)

  35. Won’t be posting my full thoughts on this new intrafamily dynamic aside from; Sarah has done nothing wrong but expect better of her little sister. I’ll see y’all tomorrow

    1. How dare someone be held to a higher standard

    2. Sarahs the goat and has done nothing wrong in her life ever. Put that on my grave.

  36. Also, the ones being like, “Oh Sarah was there but her ‘sister’ wasn’t,” did you forget that Joyce was a very devout evangelical and Jocelyne didn’t want to come out to her because she was worried Joyce would reject her? A very reasonable fear that is the real lived experience of a large number of trans people?

    1. i think also people are forgetting that the entire comic has taken place over a few months. jocelyne was, presumably, there for joyces entire life beforehand. i just dont get where the “sarah was here for her when jocelyne wasnt” i mean yeah cause joyce went to college. idgi

    2. I don’t think anyone’s denigrating joss with those comments. It is a simple fact that, for several different reasons, Sarah has been there for more of Joyce’s major and scariest moments, giving her a valid claim to the big sister title. Joss isn’t a bad sister for missing those, she was closeted and all of this happened on campus. But Sarah did also earn the title.

  37. There’s the family you are born into, the family that you choose, and the family that adopts you by force slightly against your will.

    1. The last one is very common for introverts being subsumed into extrovert groups.

  38. Love the new intrafamily dynamic. Add some Liz and Liz crossing paths with Joe again and we got some primo kino cooking.

  39. Technically, Sarah was there first, as they became sisters in 2011, and Jocelyn doesn’t show up til 2013.

Well, as long as we consider she first self-identified when she walked on to campus. If we assume she had been certain of her gender before Joyce went to college, she has precedence.

    1. The “Joyce Lyn” art would seem to indicate that Jocelyne has been sure of her gender identity for a very long time.

      1. also with how jocelyn shared her writer profile to ethan, back in freshman family weekend – she’s been out to herself a while for sure

  40. Hahaha, that Futurama line lives rent-free in my head too!

  41. StarryMoon

@NGPZ Can’t reply to you but 100% agree!

  42. Zamperla

God I love Sarah. Someday, queens protective instincts will get a break.

  43. Sarah, big sisters are not like Highlanders. There can be more than one!
