“RELEASE THE BABY!”
Why did I think of this?
I’m not even from the generation this show was popular with.
NOT THE DINA!
Odd, I would have thought this was more appropriate:
Oh my god, it’s raining chocolate!
Damn Megatron always rick rollin people.
Oh, what that Rick Astley? Sorry, I mean to link to this totally relevant video:
I loved that show. I later bought the box set and introduced my kids to it.
Dinosaurs has a ~…and with those words i have now burned through my paycheck XD
Been out for years, and you are welcome. Sorry about the broke thing.
I don’t know if I could introduce that to anyone under a certain age given how the series ended. It’s great and it ended in a rather realistic way but still I felt my heart sink the first time I saw it and realized what it all meant.
Hah. I just saw “The Croods” last week.
Here’s the reference, for those that don’t get it.
Oh my God, the avatars just made this whole thread perfect.
So does yours. Does mine?
I didn’t even know eyebrows could shoot that high
also, raptors go “snurgle”?
Apparently yes they do.
OF COURSE! DON’T YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SCIENCE?
This knowledge could mean great things for the field of science!
Hmm… I wonder…
I also wonder.
Actually they go skree-ee-ee-ee
So it’s true then, raptors can open doors! (Can they close them, though?)
Pushing a door shut is a lot easier than using a handle or doornob. Just sayin.
That is weapons-grade adorable, right there.
she can also shoot ink
that isn’t actually a dinosaur thing though, that’s just a dina thing
and then she runs away going “whoopwhoopwhoopwhoopwhoop”
Awesome Grrl Power reference.
yes…That's what I was referencing.
And it had nothing to do with futurama at all
Hey, if Grrl Power can do it, why not Zoidberg?
Am I the only one that thought of the three stooges when reading the “whoop” part?
A Three Stooges reference would have included “Nyuk nyuk nyuk”.
Am I really the only one who thought Three Stooges here?
Amazi-girl just found her sidekick.
Amazi-girl and Raptor Lass!
^^^^ This. Right there. This.
remember the raptor will circle around back while the prey is distracted by the threat they see.
If Willis ever takes a break from expanding his porn then he should consider making a separate comic about these two characters.
It could be filled with dudes-in-distress and super-villain team-ups, probably between Blaine and a resurrected William Jennings Bryan.
Amazing girl and raptor lass vs the Mary inquisition.
Hey, William Jennings Bryan wouldn’t associate himself with the likes of Blaine!
I’m afraid history disagrees.
“[Blaine] . . . was for many years the guiding genius of the Republican Party . . .”
–William Jennings Bryan, Speeches of William Jennings Bryan, Volume 1, by William Jennings Bryan
Yeah, but Bryan was a shining light of the Democratic party . . .
Democrat, Republican… they’re both out to screw over the public.
VOTE CTHULHU! Why settle for the lesser evil? (Blaine’s his running mate….)
“April is the cruelest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.” -American sports legend, Charles Barkley
I’m pretty sure that was T.S. Elliot.
Interestingly enough, the last time I heard that quote was in association with another webcomic, CRFH, referring to the character April.
I was gonna draw Raptor lass but I couldn’t come up with a good costume. It has to have feathers.
What about a Poison Ivy costume, but with feathers instead of grass, and with dino mask and tail ?
hah! as if Dina would be caught dead in anything less than a completely anatomically accurate rendition of a velociraptor or other comparable dromaeosaurid theropod
Good one, I was going to go with Dina-bot.
that has win written all over it
That’s what I thought of!!!!!
Dina is now the most adorable thing ever. Yes, even more than before.
How is that possible?!?!? She was already the most adorable thing in this universe, how can she become MORE adorable!?!? IS IT OVER 9000!?!?!?
Wasn’t Dina’s teeth a lot pointier when she did her raptor act last time?
College life has domesticated her! She’s losing her ferociousness.
no she just didnt need to transform any further
Dina needs to keep her true power in check lest she lose control and destroy all.
Who said Dina was the most popular?
Every poll ever
Sorry, Dina is still cuter.
Why do people keep using “blasphemy” in place of “heresy”? Yes blasphemy is a fun word but it has a very specific definition.
You think we should only use the word “blasphemy” for it’s correct meaning? That’s sacrilege!
How dare you use the word “sacrilege” in a blasphemy/heresy debate! Desecration!
This has to stop! Apostasy!
This is defenestration!
Wait, what are we doing again?
The English language is plastic, meaning change.
Actually, going by past polls, I think Mary’s the least popular.
I want to see that creationism vs evolution debate!
If Blaine, Faz and Ryan were in the polls, they’d beat Danny every time at being the least popular.
Okay, okay. “Least popular character who wouldn’t be shot on sight”
I suppose “Least Popular” is not to be confused with “Most Disliked.”
Is Faz really unpopular though? He tends to have a high entertainment value, which boosts his popularity even if you don’t technically ‘like’ him.
I dislike Faz on all levels; this universe’s version moreso than Shortpacked!’s. I would be perfectly happy if he were never in a strip again.
And then Willis’s next story arc is nothing but Faz.
“Faz Performs a Sex”. And it’s not a paid-for comic on
Slipshine, it’s the next 50 DoA strips. In explicit, close-up
detail. What you *can* pay for is to have those 50 strips
replaced with nothing but blackness. Overnight, Willis
becomes a millionaire.
Which would be good since he’d lose all other forms of payment.
Naw, he just has this comic’s ‘next’ button link to some other website off-site. That’d be a functional loophole, right?
It’s just a series of charts.
and crudely drawn pictures of Amber in pose’s that would make the Kama sutra look like a Dr. Seuss coloring book
We kinda already saw it. Or at least some points of it. Some when Joyce was getting a flu shot, and others when Dina and Joyce were talking at Galasso’s pizza (and subs).
Yeah, but Joyce is an innocent bigot willing to change. Mary is full on hatefully judgemental. I want to see what crap spills out of her mouth.
Mary is the least popular?
One of the great, great joys of my misspent youth was seducing and corrupting girls like Mary.
This puzzles the hell out of me when we have characters like Blaine and that date rapist running around….
I doubt Mary has had even close to enough screen time in this universe to be considered a “character”. At this stage, she’s walking, uppity background.
At the very least – Danny’s the least popular with the author.
“You have awakened the raptor!”
We’re all gonna die!
Doctor! Take me with you!
Release the Dina!
Best Dina-intended pick up line since “Dig it”.
Is this the last strip? Have you peaked?
Bravo Willis Bravo
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
Great strip, but I really don’t think David ‘MISTERRRR DANGEROUS!’ Willis will roll off the tongue all that well if he’s going to call himself Bravo.
“Misterrrrrrrrrrr DANGEROUS (to his characters)!”
Actually, that could describe Urobuchi too…
How about Dirk Lonestyle?
I did not believe it was possible for me to love Dina more.
I should have known better.
Lepetomaine Throughway? Now what’ll that asshole think of next?
Crap. Woman has been used.
Ahem. Witty Female.
….doesn’t have the same “umph” to it…
Helium eyebrows! Raptor induced.
*heart explodes from cuteness
Amazi-Girl and the Raptor. Together they fight crime!
Dina’s not a lover, she’s a biter.
Faz was hoping she was.
BEST. STRIP. EVER.
There is merch to be gotten from this strip.
Merch, I say!
LET LOOSE THE RAPTOR! Would make a great shirt.
Dont move an inch her vision is based on movement.
I don’t think I’ve commented before, but I won’t be able to sleep if I don’t note that Dina wins everything forever.
This is very humorous
Oh, Dina. Never, ever change.
Except to evolve into a more birdlike form over thousands of generations, in response to natural selection.
Nope. This is it. There is no form that could possibly be better adapted to its environment.
Dina would look down on that, as it’s very unscientific. It’s also implying that the environment itself wouldn’t change, thus requiring adaptation to the new environment. Your theory is unsound and based off personal biases; Dina would be disappointed.
So far I guess Dina Saruyama has evolved into Dinah Nychus.
She may get to be Saruyamarnithoides yet.
Every time I see Dina I remember how much I want that hat, and how I once found an almost identical purple one at target but they wouldn’t let me buy it because it didn’t have a pricetag and was probably just left there by a toddler which would explain why it was the size of a standard yamaka and made me look ridiculous.
Didn’t Willis once publish instructions/directions for how to make Dina’s hat?
wat´cha talking ´bout?
That is by far the cutest thing ever drawn by anyone ever
I TAKE THAT AS A CHALLENGE.
Oscar for “Best Imitation of a Dinosaur by a fictional character”
It is indeed a contender, alt text.
Agreed. It’s up there, but probably not #1 for me. But then, I’m one of the hundreds of DoA fans who actually vote for other characters in the polls . . . (Haters no hating!)
Between Dina’s raptor and Marigold’s booty dance, I don’t think this night can get any cuter.
Marigold should Raptor and Dina should booty dance.
Now if only Jeph draws Marigold in Dina’s raptor pose, the world will finally be complete.
Whatever Willis had in the queue for the rest of the week, he should probably just scrap it and replace it with this.
I was wrong. Cuteness has been intensified to utterly diabolical levels.
So is Dina looking Marigold in the rack because that’s what’s moving?
Possibly, but I would like to think she’s staring at dat booty, since that’s what’s grooving.
She’s looking because, face it, who doesn’t?
Hm. Dina and Marigold are both socially awkward at a level where they’ve been avoiding other people and are only now learning to have friends. Something a little weird about that making them the most popular, because it obviously doesn’t work for people like that in their own universes.
It’s not that weird if you take into consideration the amount of people who like both characters because the characters may or may not embody a part of themselves, if not themselves entirely. Dina and Marigold give those people someone to relate to and root for in the comic, and maybe even an inspiration or starting point to boost confidence in themselves, to try being social as well.
Then there’s the idea that the internet is made up of a good population of socially introverted people, and that a character in a webcomic that they feel represented by is an inevitable occurrence.
Huh, and all this time I thought the internet was made up of tubes.
Dina is the bestest friend/raptor anyone could have.
It’s true! She learned from the Blaine experience –Dina will guard that door as long and as toothily as needed.
I love Dina
I’ll be/Raptor Round Your Finger
I’ll be/Raptor Round Your Finger–apologies to The Police
This isn’t the best Dumbing of Age strip until Dina pounces on Danny and eviscerates him with her knife-like toe claws.
I assume that’s the next strip.
Or maybe the two to the sides?
Actually, the larger toe claw is theorized to have been used more for stabbing, rather than slashing.
Just then, Danny heard something to his right. It was another Dina. That, my friends, was the last we ever saw of Danny.
Danny: Clever girl…
Is Danny really the most unpopular? He’s been in more strips than a lot of people, and he’s not that unlikable.
Frequency of strips doesn’t necessarily make him not unpopular but I think it’s an exageration for the sake of the joke.
Danny is plenty unpopular and plenty unlikeable.
He is an unlikeable person that thinks they are perfectly normal and likeable which is one of his biggest problems.
He pretty much never reflects on anything ever, which means you could create a step by step plan on what will happen when he talks to someone and likely be right, because he never changes.
He thinks too much about what other people will think of him if he takes a particular action but fails to consider what will happen if he takes a different action.
He lashes out at people (he threatened to murder Joe and Dorothy, his lashing out includes pretty serious threats and he even hurt Joe with an insult, he needs to get that under control).
He considers actions in terms of how they will affect him, not others, in many cases.
If he actually reflected on why things seem to go wrong, and actually learned and changed as a result, then he’d be a character many more of us would be able to sympathise with. He would be a flawed character, yes, but he wouldn’t be just be “that one idiot that always screws things up in the exact same kind of manner” any more.
I have no idea what you’re talking about for most of this post; maybe my memory is just bad, though. However, for the actually specific examples you provided rather than vague wrongdoings I have no recollection of, he certainly did not threaten Joe and Dorothy. A genuine threat implies an actual chance of violence or other wrongdoing (see: Blaine in general, and in return Amber threatening him to leave), not just expressing frustration. Also, as I recall he hurt Joe with the truth after Joe ruined something for him. By definition you are the worst wingman ever if instead of helping somebody with something like that, you scare off the person instead.
Went back and read some older Danny strips to refresh my memory, and jeez, worst wingman ever is an understatement. He was talking about banging Dorothy before she broke up with Danny, and even after that’s still a ridiculously inconsiderate thing to say to your supposed best friend. And he apparently hired a prostitute for Danny…
Oh Danny did not seriously friggin’ threaten to murder anyone, don’t be ridiculous.
“I will murder you” is a creepy thing to say to a stranger. Why? Because you don’t have a relationship with established groundrules for what you feel is comfortable to say to each other. But Danny and Joe are friends. They are male teenager friends. They’ve known each other all their lives, and male teenager friends will say horrible shit to each other constantly with the implicit shared understanding that they don’t mean any of it, that it is merely a quick gauge for how upset they are within a certain range. Taking Danny’s stupid homicide remark literally is absurd. Amazingly, horribly absurd.
I’m honestly a bit surprised that Danny get that much flak from the fandom. Sure, he’s kinda naive und sometimes a bit stupid, but he means well and is all in all a nice guy.
So… he’s a kid that doesn’t have a grasp on the world around him yet. Sounds like a college freshman to me.
I’d argue that we have yet to get a chance to see his self-reflection period, partially because the story, until recently, had been focused on other characters, and partially because the plot has only covered the first few months of the first semester of college over the course of 4ish years. People like him need more time and experience with dealing with others and the consequences of his own actions before any self-reflection can be done, and even then, it would take something pretty hard-hitting in his own life to trigger that self-reflection. I don’t doubt that we’ll get to that in a year or two, as each character is just beginning to get their assigned character arcs, and I have a feeling that Danny’s will be one of the more satisfying ones to see play out. For me, at least.
Actually, I don’t think it’s even been a full month yet (if each year is about a week, it’s only been a few weeks and some change). So, even less time for him to have reflection.
At this point, I’m not really mad at Danny anymore. Sure, he was an idiot for not connecting the dots re: Amazi-Girl, but now that the truth is out, there’s not much left to take issue with. People who think otherwise either have a hard time letting go of the Danny-hate that gripped much of the readership not too long ago, part of which was pre-conditioned by everyone’s (including Willis) own contempt for Roomies! era Danny, or hold him to a fantastically unrealistic standard (such as Sam above) for… reasons, I guess?
cuteness ? some sh*t is going to hit the fan real soon…
In reference to the alt text, Dina already met Faz.
The snappiest possible retort to the alt text.
Wait, Danny’s the least popular*? Dang. Poor Danny. I knew he was disliked, but not that much.
Then again, I have often felt I am the only person to sympathies with him instead of calling him a wimp or a coward, so it shouldn’t come as THAT much of surprise.
*Not including Blaine. No one like Blaine, nor does he deserve to be liked by anyone.
Danny: Wow, that’s—kind of adorable. Can I punch your cheek?
I really hope you meant “pinch”… <..>
Danny’s face in that last panel–priceless.
I didn’t think Dina could get any more adorable. I was clearly wrong.
I don’t care. Dina is adorkable.
Waitaminnut! Where was the Raptor when Amber’s father was around? I guess she didn’t know…
She has learned from that experience.
Dina did know, but she let Blaine in anyway because her parents insisted. That kind of mistake will apparently never be made again. Good for her.
Dina is the cutest raptor ever.
Truth. You could remove the word “raptor” and it’d still be true.
Danny’s less popular than Mary, Faz, and Blaine?!
The least popular “likeable character”, at the least.
My first thought at the alt text.
The hat makes this strip every bit more throw-money-at-screenable.
Is Dina in a hoodie dress? Remember, hoodie dresses for all!
Is Danny in a hoodie dress?
Sorry, Danny, you shall not pass.
D’aww… Amber has a cute little guard do…I mean raptor.
Why are a couple of stick figures running away at mach speed? (shot for xkcd reference)
Yes, officer, I WAS a raptor.
…no, sir, not a velociraptor, a utahraptor.
Ha,ha! I was thinking the same thing.
Dina is hands down the most adorable character in any strip I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a bunch.
I’m not the sort to use ‘adorable’ for anything alive let alone in a comic….
but danm, she’s cute.
Best raptor noise evar!
“Who’s that pokemon!?”
Sorry for the delay, I didn’t have time to respond to your comment in the thread about racism on Friday’s strip over the weekend. I posted my response this morning.
Scary, but perhaps not for the reason Dina thinks.
Huh…I did not realize that people hated Dina!
Who hates Dina? I didn’t see it :-/
I think this was a joke, deliberately misinterpreting the alt-text.
And now it is dead. Because I killed it via explanation.
It’s in a better place now.
Release your inner raptor. SNNRRGGLLL!!!
Punt the ancient chicken.
Hmm… I just thought that although Sal may be the coolest person in the campus now (at least according to some people), but imagine these stories that two elderly women tell the youngsters in years later:
- “When I was in college, I was a ferocious beast and a friend of a superhero.”
- “When I was in college, I was a superhero, and I had a raptor guarding me.”
Who will be cool then?
I don’t think anyone has noted that this makes Dina the best roommate ever in the history of college. My roommate in college wasn’t even able to keep a stoner out of our room, as she was prone to leaving the door unlocked. I would have traded for an adorably socially awkward roommate that makes raptor noises in a heart beat.
Danny will always be my favorite character. That’s right. I went there.
Slow loading this morning, so at first all I could see was a green dome with angry eyes and pointy teeth saying Amber DOES NOT want to be disturbed. And I thought, *This* is something new. Then it became Dina.
Dina is such a good friend. ^_^
its the raptor. RUUUUUN!
That is precious.
YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
“The raptor is a metaphor for beating you to death.”
Go Dina, go. You scare away that Danny, we don’t want him near sad Amber.
You’re absolutely right, we don’t want the one person who could help and comfort Amber to be able to see her. Because we HATE Amber and want her to commit SUICIDE, and Danny would stand in the way of that.
Fare thee well, eyebrows!
Oh my God, Dina. <3
DINA IS THE ADORABELESTEST
The subtext points to Danny being the least popular character, but I wonder how much of Danny being unpopular ties into him in the other comics rather than what he has done and is doing in this strip.
Danny is only unpopular because of what people THINK he’s done in other strips. It’s gone far behind the initial poor impression people had of him (because he didn’t get Dorothy’s unspoken messages) into outright lies and delusions about the vicious and callous angrifests and casual attempts to murder people that people imagine him to have perpetrated.
Dorothy may have sent some unspoken messages but he completely ignored the one she sent in giant flashing neon letters: that her education and career were important to her. He was all, ‘meh, even if I fail I can cling to you, and maybe you’ll give up on your dreams and cling back, yay!’ THAT is where Danny lost most people. The constant state of obliviousness is irritating, even if understandable so that gains him no points. Plus it became a running joke that many find very amusing and others take far too seriously.
And here’s an example! AT NO POINT did Danny say anything like “even if I fail I can cling to you, and maybe you’ll give up on your dreams and cling back, yay”. It was actually more like, “I’m getting a CS degree which is great; I can use it anywhere! While you’re president, I can be doing CS stuff that helps you be president! And also, this school that you’re trying to dump on (by implying that my CS degree I’m getting here is no good)? Maybe you’ll come to like it and decide it’s not a craphole stepping stone after all!”
Note, of course, that he SPECIFICALLY REFERS TO being on board with her becoming president. Note also that he doesn’t become clingy at all until she freaking dumps him, and that she herself mentions that the bad timing of it all was her fault, not his.
Note also that nobody gives a shit about what actually happened; it must be Danny’s fault because reasons. Imaginary, made-up reasons.
He’s passive aggressively suggesting she give up her dream and stay there with him.
Begbert’s a lost cause when it comes to Dorothy. He only hears what he wants to hear.
Am I now? That’s interesting. I don’t even dislike the girl. I just note that she completely dropped the ball on dumping Danny before leading him to college, and when it comes to getting the things she wants (presidency, caramel abs, shoes) she thinks mostly about what she wants and not how her decisions will impact anyone else. Especially Danny. She is like the prototype for the fandom’s disrespect for Danny. But that aside, she’s still only like 19 (unlike a lot of the commenters here), and I expect a certain amount of immature selfishness and don’t hold it against her – I just don’t think that people should hold it against Danny.
This is amazing.
Prediction based on previous patterns
Dan is unable to see Amber.
*IF* Amber mopes/falls deeper into depression/wishes someone were there to talk with her/something bad happens because Dan was unable to talk with her. (Not necessarily Amber’s fault.)
Some people then proceed to complain about it being Dan’s fault and how he ‘Danned it up!” (‘HE SHOULDA PUNCHED DINA IN THE FACE AND FORCED HIS WAY IN’), and how Danny is a horrible person.
(This is only slightly tongue in cheek)
It’s not a big room. If Amber’s in, she’s not more than ten feet away. If she wants to see Danny, she can call off the raptor.
I am glad that Dina is listening to Amber’s requests and guarding her space, but I’m also glad that Danny is attempting to be there for Amber. Hopefully a middle ground can be established, such as Dina conveying a message of support.
Dina is the least popular character? But she’s so adorable!
I’d have thought it would be Robin’s awful sister. The one in college, not the youngest. R…Roz? Is that her name? I think that’s her name.
Danny’s the least popular.
Everyone LOVES Dina
But is she a Velociraptor, Utahraptor, Oviraptor, Gigantoraptor or one of the more obscure dromeosaurids? Or is she a peregrine falcon or another one of the true “raptors”?
No matter what, I still think that shouldn’t be “SNRRRRGLLLLLL!”, it should be “CHIIIIRRPPP!”. Accuracy matters.
she’s a Dina-raptor and true, but shes humoring the plebeian with a common misconception and noise while at the same time being threatening and adorable
“Open the door, get on the floor
Everyone walk the dinosaur”
I actually kinda like Danny.
Any relationship between theraptors and therapists?
Yup, this is pretty much how I flirt with people.
Doth my eyes deceive me, or is Dina in a hoodie dress as well?
Does this mean Dina is one of those dino-human hybrids from that terrible Jurassic Park sequels they thankfully decided not to make?
Wait a minute. According to Jurassic Park a raptor’s hunting patterns have one attracting the prey’s attention from the front and another attacking from the blind spot.
DANNY, LOOK OUT! RILEY’S ABOUT TO SNEAK UP BEHIND YOU WITH A SHIV!
Wow, he’s so shocked, his eyebrows flew off of his head.
