I’m not sure, but I think he’s saying that geekiness isn’t able to be separated into degrees of coolness via interest, in this case ukulele vs dinobot.
No brand of geek is marginalized though. Nobody outside of high school has time to give a damn about your nerd hobbies one way or the other unless they share them.
Still, given that they’re only a couple months out of high school, it’s not surprising some of the attitude carries over.
And while the attitude towards nerd hobbies has certainly changed, it’s not because of lack of time, it’s because a lot of them have gone mainstream. If it was “nobody has time to give a damn”, it would always have been true, but it wasn’t that long ago – certainly when I was in my twenties, that most of the nerd hobbies were looked down on as kid stuff at best.
Thank you both. I was thinking that Joe marginalizes Danny – at least re the ukelele – and that Joe is pretty much the definition of mainstream. Now trying to respect women, of course, which puts him ahead of the ruling U.S. party, which I reluctantly acknowledge must by considered mainstream (except trump lost the poular vote . . . It’s all so messed up).
Ethan is saying that Danny thinks that the way he is treated for being a geek counts as being marginalised, whereas in fact nothing much happens to Danny compared with the way that he, Ethan, is treated for being gay.
Yeah, no, especially since Danny’s bi and Ethan knows it. Comes with its own shitty challenges, which maybe Ethan doesn’t know about yet but then he’d probably put Danny on the same ‘tier’. (There is the religious axis to take into consideration as well, but see previous: No one wins the Marginalization Olympics.)
I think Ethan is saying that liking transformers is more dorky and has more of a stigma than playing the ukelele (which is somewhat questionable in a world with like 8 transformers movies) and isn’t using it in a social justice sense. Toy collecting is still slightly below gunpla and Warhammer on the nerd hobby coolness scale, I think.
I feel like the more toy collector-y types (at least the more dedicated like Ethan is anyway) do have more judgment aimed at them than other focuses do, but it’s still not nearly what it used to be.

It’s good to be a geek but if you’re trying to be a geek it isn’t cool and if you’re a generic geek like a video game or movie geek that’s not cool anymore unless you’re into the obscure elements of that geekdom but if you’re too condescending about your geek expertise it’s not cool or if another geek shows you up then you need to find a new sub genre of geekiness

Due entirely to the Shortpacked reviews triggering a wave of nostalgia and happening upon the toy shelf at Walmart, I now have four out of five PotP Dinobots. The missing one is Sludge, who was the only one I owned back in the 80s.

So, on good news front – I told my mom last night I was questioning whether or not I was ace and she took it pretty well. Asked a few questions about my history and my boyfriend and then just told me she just wanted me to be happy and have love in my life (not necessarily romantic love – she’s said before she doesn’t care what kind).

I worded this badly, but it is hard to express it, especially since I didn’t know him very well. He was transitioning to a male legal identity, as the majority of his personalities were masculine, but at least one personality was feminine and resisting transition. Since he was already on T when I met him, and was scheduled for a mastectomy, this was not a harmonious thing.
I wish the Beast Wars toys never went out of production – I’d like to have my old Dinobot and Manterror back, without having to pay for what is now a collectors item.
Beast Wars was awesome, but the producers decided to make the canonically contradictory Beast Machines, which looked awful with their biomechanical components and no real transformations. May Dinobot’s soul rest in peace. Yes, they have souls. I don’t know how that works.
Beast Machines would have been better if they’d been allowed to actually be aproper sequel or just been it’s own thing. Doing what they did, trying to make it a sequel while disregarding past continuity, just made things a mess.

D2 are rare but do exist, I have seen one or two in the wild. Usually people use a d4 odds or evens if they don’t have a coin to flip.
I’ve always wanted a 24-sided die, maybe a deltoidal hexahedron or one of the 24-sided Catalan icositetrahedra.
I have a D7 and a D5. A D2 seems boring.

And while the attitude towards nerd hobbies has certainly changed, it’s not because of lack of time, it’s because a lot of them have gone mainstream. If it was “nobody has time to give a damn”, it would always have been true, but it wasn’t that long ago – certainly when I was in my twenties, that most of the nerd hobbies were looked down on as kid stuff at best.

Now trying to respect women, of course, which puts him ahead of the ruling U.S. party, which I reluctantly acknowledge must by considered mainstream (except trump lost the poular vote . . . Ethan is saying that Danny thinks that the way he is treated for being a geek counts as being marginalised, whereas in fact nothing much happens to Danny compared with the way that he, Ethan, is treated for being gay.

Yeah, no, especially since Danny’s bi and Ethan knows it. Comes with its own shitty challenges, which maybe Ethan doesn’t know about yet but then he’d probably put Danny on the same ‘tier’. I think Ethan is saying that liking transformers is more dorky and has more of a stigma than playing the ukelele (which is somewhat questionable in a world with like 8 transformers movies) and isn’t using it in a social justice sense. Toy collecting is still slightly below gunpla and Warhammer on the nerd hobby coolness scale, I think.

Due entirely to the Shortpacked reviews triggering a wave of nostalgia and happening upon the toy shelf at Walmart, I now have four out of five PotP Dinobots. The missing one is Sludge, who was the only one I owned back in the 80s.

Though if were due to the Amazi-Girl personality being transgender, that would be awkward (I have known at least one person with Dissociative Identity Disorder whose primary identity was FTM, but some of his other identities were female. It got messy.)
I worded this badly, but it is hard to express it, especially since I didn’t know him very well. He was transitioning to a male legal identity, as the majority of his personalities were masculine, but at least one personality was feminine and resisting transition. Since he was already on T when I met him, and was scheduled for a mastectomy, this was not a harmonious thing.
Surely it would be unethical to perform non-reversible surgery in the case of a conflicted patient?

Beast Wars was awesome, but the producers decided to make the canonically contradictory Beast Machines, which looked awful with their biomechanical components and no real transformations. May Dinobot’s soul rest in peace. Yes, they have souls. I don’t know how that works.
Beast Machines would have been better if they’d been allowed to actually be aproper sequel or just been it’s own thing. Doing what they did, trying to make it a sequel while disregarding past continuity, just made things a mess.
