There is a concept that the King has two bodies: the actual physical body, and the body of the state. One is transitory, and the other is eternal. Hence “the king is dead, long live the king.”
“Y’all” can be associative plural, e.g. you’re talking to one person but you mean “you and your family,” “you and your friends,” you and your schoolmates,” etc.
True singular “y’all” is mostly a product of non-Southern writers not understanding the concept of “associative plural,” but my Jackson-born linguist friend tells me it occasionally makes an appearance in border states.
Wikipedia credits both Yinz and Y’all as having Scots-Irish roots. What never shows up in a web search for a western Pennsylvania speech curiosity is “Yull” (rhymes with lull)
I keep hearing “yinz” as being Western Pennsylvania, but my former boss occasionally says “yinz” or maybe “yiz” and he’s from the Philadelphia area (I believe he grew up in rural New Jersey but was close to Philly.) Is that a thing, or is he just an outlier?
Speech, no matter where it’s spoken, is more likely to have a traceable origin, than it is to have emerged spontaneously where spoken. To keep it comics connected, one prominent character in the history of Texas, as documented by Jack Jackson, was definitely of Scots origin, and the state does have a Robertson County.

As best I understand it, the appropriate thing to say here would be “Bless your heart,” but it’s not my dialect and I don’t really know.
Y’all should never ever be singular, since it’s pretty much a reaction to you taking on the meaning of the now-defunct thou, the second person singular. Language is already confusing and frustrating for my brain, please don’t make the parts that make sense not make sense.
I think singular y’all is a Texas dialectal thing, with all y’all being plural. In most other dialects of American English with y’all (or you-all), it’s plural. Something I’ve noticed, but haven’t seen anything academic on, is they-all as plural they.
I’m reaching way out of my depth here, but in a way Texas is to dialects what California is to geology. There are just so many overlays from so many different directions.

Microclimates would probably be a little more appropriate an analogy, given the geological analogy implies geological timescales are a factor in the mixing of dialects. Which, in general, they are not.
But as long as we’re mincing words (which is after all the source of dialects), the source of “y’all” is slurred speech. It’s a contraction. It doesn’t need a singular origin, because anyone can easily invent it independently of awareness of its common use.

No, Amazi-Girl sees herself as one person and Amber as another. They share a distant history and a body. And apparently a whole lot of fighting skills and reflexes so it’s not like their brain’s capacity is overtaxed.
Well, the fighting skills make sense. The muscle memory and reflexes would certainly carry over, even if they hadn’t been sharing memories when they learned those skills.

In fact, at work, a bunch of us who were born and raised here had to educate someone from up north about how “y’all” is not singular, because they’d only ever heard it used on TV and in movies.
You do hear that said. But it doesn’t seem to be true in most places that use “y’all”, according to most people who’ve looked into it. Instead “all y’all” is usually, and very simply, “all of y’all”.
“All y’all” has a reliance on nonverbal cues, in the way that this entire family of noncount pronouns (including “y’all” and “you”) also does.
You (and by extension, any observers) must be aware of your audience’s composition in order to determine whether any of these terms is singular, plural, or includes all present parties besides the speaker.
The reason there is variance in the use and therefore implied plurality of these terms is because the context in which one’s dialogue is composed dictates the level of specificity these terms are assigned. Otherwise there would be no variance, as with “me”, “him”, “her”, and “it”.
Similar case with the TES phrase “this one”, that is used by Khajit. If you were lacking context, you could easily miss the fact that it refers to the speaker, and might assume they were indicating an item or another person.
Contextual relevance is why people gesture when they speak. It’s because their language lacks a certain degree of specificity.
See, this is why I love this forum. It starts as an interesting discussion about dialect in the American south, and ends up talking about how cat people from an old computer game (which I just happen to have started playing recently) talk about themselves in the third person.

Evansville, at least in terms of accent, is much closer to “Midwest City” than “Southern”. Think Louisville, Cincinnati, Lexington more than, say, Paducah KY.

Historically speaking, southern Indiana was settled by southerners moving north, while northern Indiana was settled by non-southerners moving west. While no part of Indiana is “southern” by Southern standards, in terms of culture and language, there is kind of a North-South gradient in the state, with the dividing line right around Bloomington.
Evansville, the largest city in southern Indiana, is not in the south but it is kinda sorta is southern-ish. The border of the border.
Considering how it was mentioned in the comments yesterday that Split is an absolutely terrible depiction of DID, I’d say the answer to that last question is an emphatic “yes”.
Evansville is the border of the border. I’ve only visited Louisville twice, and both times only briefly, and only once did I cross the bridge to Evansville…but even though I can’t quantify the difference, Louisville is southern, while Evansville is more south-ish.

I’ve known people with multiple personalities who navigated dating and its basically like a weird polyamory. You have to do a lot of communicating to make sure everyone’s on the same page and people don’t get hurt.
It’ll depend a little on how separate the personalities are.
Now the FUN question is “if a personality the partner isn’t dating pretends to be another to trick them into sex is it rape?”

It might help Amber feel better in the short-term, it might be what she needs, but he’s never gonna push her to feel better.
Though this whole, “I’m gonna just barrel through and ignore your intense mental health issues” might be an act, I kinda….. doubt it.
Maybe that’s what he’s doing, it is Walky after all. In his shoes though I’d be holding off discussing mental issues until I could talk to Amber and get her read on how or if to talk to Amazegirl about that subject.
But Amber’s the one he knows better and is sort of dating, so maybe still talk to her first.
And “saner and more mature” is debatable at best. Amazi-Girl is the one who dresses up in the funny costume and goes out to fight crime. Or, not too long ago, to stalk and harass Sal.
Yeah this looks like progress! Also somehow his acknowledgement of her two identities seems to have helped her be slightly less split – she said “us”! As in ‘coming from us.’
Amazi-Girl would find it considerably less “garbage fire” of Amber if Walky clarified that it’s NOT actually cheating on Dorothy like AG thinks it is, because Dorothy dumped him. And by extension, that Amber is partitioning AG’s shared memory access harder. Which Walky actually noticed but got imbalanced from thinking about by the rapidly shifting and intense conversation. Maybe they’ll double back around.
But if they do, AG will learn by extension, Amber seems to be resisting AG more.
I do find it kind of amusing that, while both Amber and Amazi-Girl were/are?? attracted to Danny, Amazi-Girl doesn’t seem terribly impressed with Walky.
They’ve been in 22 strips together as of today, including several where they don’t interact at all. Pretty much all their interaction so far has been the time he and Dorothy chased her, and the time he shared his care package cookies on Garbage Roof.
Amber’s relationship with Walky is based less on physicality and more on the open sharing policy of Garbage Roof, an experience which AG hasn’t had (and maybe doesn’t need the way Amber did).
Word of god may prove me wrong but it really seems, to me, that amber and amazigirl have been getting more and more separate.
When she and Danny were together Amazigirl was just a mask she put on. She felt she could speak for Amazigirl because she WAS Amazigirl. So when they went on their fake date it was basically him and his girlfriend without realizing it.
Now they’re so distinct that they don’t even share memories.
Yeah, and it makes me like AG less. Like, it’s not healthy or attractive to be as hard on yourself as Amber is, but it’s even less so doing it from outside.
Walky is so *close* to getting it and then he’s not quite actually *there*– like, he’s now aware of what’s going on with Amber but he doesn’t see it as a problem.
He does though. He explicitly recognizes the role of self loathing in defining the partition boundaries. But Walky is also ok with being filled with self loathing, because thats his life too. He sees she’s got problems, but he knows he isn’t in a position to pass judgement. He’s just being open and honest with her, although perhaps too open. It might be the healthiest interaction yet for Amber.
I think it’s good for them. Amber has a thing where she thinks she is the Absolute Worst More than Anyone Else, which is actually fairly egotistical. On Garbage Roof, Wally sharing his issues helped her see she’s not alone and not the only one who feels that way. Now the AG identity is also getting the same treatment – getting the ‘I am the Absolute Worst’ (or amber is) narrative taken down a peg and put into perspective. It seems to be having a fast effect too!
Honestly, I’m kinda…into this? Walky’s engaging with the situation head-on and not getting caught up in the…everything. It’s something like acceptance. It feels like this will end in growth for all of them.
It’s hypothetically possible. After all, right now, Amazi-Girl and Amber are non-communicative. So there is no reason why Walky could not have distinct interactions with both psyches without reference to the other and which he keeps secret for his own reasons.
FWIW, though, I don’t think he’s that sort of guy.

My own habit when checking out the comic is to ctrl+F the comments for Cerb’s name, read comment and any surrounding comments for context if applicable, ctrl+F for Willis’s name, read comment and any surrounding comments for context if applicable, then if there’s something I want to comment, ctrl+F for if someone’s already said something similar and read comment and any surrounding comments if applicable. If I am still hanging about I may then skim/read the rest of comments, depending. Also if I’ve made a comment on a particular day, I try to go back and check for replies after the following day’s strip goes up.

Maybe it’s because those masks do the same thing for her? She has dot eyes like Walky. The Amazi-Mask adds sclera, and Amber’s glasses are translucent white so they add pseudo-sclera.

Also, even if Amber and Amazi-Girl are two different people, Amber must learn that she and Amazi-Girl can be both equally good or bad and none of them are inherently worse, just two different sides of the same coin.

Walky is deceptively smart. He coasted through high school without studying, just picking stuff up in class. I bet calculus is the one thing he’s run into where that’s not working for him.
Which kind of annoys me since it plays into the “math is hard” thing and makes it appear that the obvious solution is to drop calc and just not worry about it.
Plus, at least in my math class experience, studying for math is easier than studying most other subjects. You do the homework problems and do more of those as necessary. If you can do them, you’ve basically got it. None of this rereading and outlining chapters or whatever it is you’re supposed to do in most subjects. You learn math by doing it. The subject might not be easy, but the path to learning it is more straightforward.
Having been in Walky’s position regarding Calc during the opening few weeks of my own collage experience, I can definitely say that for me it doesn’t feed into the notion that math is hard. It wasn’t until someone helped me by explaining the logic behind the processes encapsulated in the formulas rather then insisting I merely memorize the formulas that I was able to wrap my head around the subject and progress.
I soared through math in high school — I didn’t so much study it as absorb it. My SAT for math was in the 97th percentile.
Then in college I ran headlong into calculus. Calculus was never intuitive for me, and I never figured out a good way to study it. In my fourth semester Calc class, I wound up with a C — not a good grade for a supposed math major.
My experience is kind of the opposite. I have a great deal of trouble remembering things, but very little trouble understanding things. And in mathematics, unlike almost everything else, once you’ve understood something you’ve got it. If you don’t recall something , you can easily work it back out again. From having tutored tons of people in calculus back in the day, I think the main problem most people have with it is getting confused.
Amazi-Girl is quite interestingly self-aware, isn’t she? As I and others have pointed out, it does seem that she shares most of Amber’s qualities in the end; it’s only their self-image that’s really different and even then only at the time the two of them partitioned.
With regard to Walky? Yeah, I think he’s more aware of his own problems than he lets on. I also think that Amazi-Girl isn’t sure exactly what she thinks of what he just said except that it was awkward!

It is sweet that Walky is attracted both to what Amber and Amazi-Girl think is best in themselves and what they think is worst in themselves, but it’s likely to be rather tragic. Walky is someone they both think poorly of. Besides, they are not coping well with their traumas, and need expert treatment, not to sack with someone who looks a lot like Sal.

“Y’all” is plural. “All y’all” means “All of you here.” I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL, FIGHT ME.
“Y’all” can be associative plural, e.g. you’re talking to one person but you mean “you and your family,” “you and your friends,” you and your schoolmates,” etc.
True singular “y’all” is mostly a product of non-Southern writers not understanding the concept of “associative plural,” but my Jackson-born linguist friend tells me it occasionally makes an appearance in border states.

Y’all should never ever be singular, since it’s pretty much a reaction to you taking on the meaning of the now-defunct thou, the second person singular. Language is already confusing and frustrating for my brain, please don’t make the parts that make sense not make sense.
I think singular y’all is a Texas dialectal thing, with all y’all being plural. In most other dialects of American English with y’all (or you-all), it’s plural. Something I’ve noticed, but haven’t seen anything academic on, is they-all as plural they.
I’m reaching way out of my depth here, but in a way Texas is to dialects what California is to geology. There are just so many overlays from so many different directions.

Microclimates would probably be a little more appropriate an analogy, given the geological analogy implies geological timescales are a factor in the mixing of dialects. Which, in general, they are not.
But as long as we’re mincing words (which is after all the source of dialects), the source of “y’all” is slurred speech. It’s a contraction. It doesn’t need a singular origin, because anyone can easily invent it independently of awareness of its common use.
I did that as a kid on the West Coast.

Well, the fighting skills make sense. The muscle memory and reflexes would certainly carry over, even if they hadn’t been sharing memories when they learned those skills.

The reason there is variance in the use and therefore implied plurality of these terms is because the context in which one’s dialogue is composed dictates the level of specificity these terms are assigned. Otherwise there would be no variance, as with “me”, “him”, “her”, and “it”.
Similar case with the TES phrase “this one”, that is used by Khajit. If you were lacking context, you could easily miss the fact that it refers to the speaker, and might assume they were indicating an item or another person.
Contextual relevance is why people gesture when they speak. It’s because their language lacks a certain degree of specificity.
See, this is why I love this forum. It starts as an interesting discussion about dialect in the American south, and ends up talking about how cat people from an old computer game (which I just happen to have started playing recently) talk about themselves in the third person.

He grew up in Evansville, right across the Ohio from Kentucky.
Depending on which map you consult, the dialect may be shared.
Evansville, at least in terms of accent, is much closer to “Midwest City” than “Southern”. Think Louisville, Cincinnati, Lexington more than, say, Paducah KY.

Historically speaking, southern Indiana was settled by southerners moving north, while northern Indiana was settled by non-southerners moving west. While no part of Indiana is “southern” by Southern standards, in terms of culture and language, there is kind of a North-South gradient in the state, with the dividing line right around Bloomington.
Evansville, the largest city in southern Indiana, is not in the south but it is kinda sorta is southern-ish. The border of the border.
Considering how it was mentioned in the comments yesterday that Split is an absolutely terrible depiction of DID, I’d say the answer to that last question is an emphatic “yes”.

Amber’s relationship with Walky is based less on physicality and more on the open sharing policy of Garbage Roof, an experience which AG hasn’t had (and maybe doesn’t need the way Amber did).
Word of god may prove me wrong but it really seems, to me, that amber and amazigirl have been getting more and more separate.

Walky is so *close* to getting it and then he’s not quite actually *there*– like, he’s now aware of what’s going on with Amber but he doesn’t see it as a problem.
He does though. He explicitly recognizes the role of self loathing in defining the partition boundaries. But Walky is also ok with being filled with self loathing, because thats his life too. He sees she’s got problems, but he knows he isn’t in a position to pass judgement. He’s just being open and honest with her, although perhaps too open. It might be the healthiest interaction yet for Amber.
I think it’s good for them. Amber has a thing where she thinks she is the Absolute Worst More than Anyone Else, which is actually fairly egotistical. On Garbage Roof, Wally sharing his issues helped her see she’s not alone and not the only one who feels that way. Now the AG identity is also getting the same treatment – getting the ‘I am the Absolute Worst’ (or amber is) narrative taken down a peg and put into perspective. It seems to be having a fast effect too!
Honestly, I’m kinda…into this? Walky’s engaging with the situation head-on and not getting caught up in the…everything. It’s something like acceptance. It feels like this will end in growth for all of them.

My own habit when checking out the comic is to ctrl+F the comments for Cerb’s name, read comment and any surrounding comments for context if applicable, ctrl+F for Willis’s name, read comment and any surrounding comments for context if applicable, then if there’s something I want to comment, ctrl+F for if someone’s already said something similar and read comment and any surrounding comments if applicable. If I am still hanging about I may then skim/read the rest of comments, depending. Also if I’ve made a comment on a particular day, I try to go back and check for replies after the following day’s strip goes up.

Walky is deceptively smart. He coasted through high school without studying, just picking stuff up in class. I bet calculus is the one thing he’s run into where that’s not working for him.
Which kind of annoys me since it plays into the “math is hard” thing and makes it appear that the obvious solution is to drop calc and just not worry about it.
Plus, at least in my math class experience, studying for math is easier than studying most other subjects. You do the homework problems and do more of those as necessary. If you can do them, you’ve basically got it. None of this rereading and outlining chapters or whatever it is you’re supposed to do in most subjects. You learn math by doing it. The subject might not be easy, but the path to learning it is more straightforward.
Having been in Walky’s position regarding Calc during the opening few weeks of my own collage experience, I can definitely say that for me it doesn’t feed into the notion that math is hard. It wasn’t until someone helped me by explaining the logic behind the processes encapsulated in the formulas rather then insisting I merely memorize the formulas that I was able to wrap my head around the subject and progress.
I soared through math in high school — I didn’t so much study it as absorb it. My SAT for math was in the 97th percentile.
Then in college I ran headlong into calculus. Calculus was never intuitive for me, and I never figured out a good way to study it. In my fourth semester Calc class, I wound up with a C — not a good grade for a supposed math major.
My experience is kind of the opposite. I have a great deal of trouble remembering things, but very little trouble understanding things. And in mathematics, unlike almost everything else, once you’ve understood something you’ve got it. If you don’t recall something , you can easily work it back out again. From having tutored tons of people in calculus back in the day, I think the main problem most people have with it is getting confused.
Amazi-Girl is quite interestingly self-aware, isn’t she? As I and others have pointed out, it does seem that she shares most of Amber’s qualities in the end; it’s only their self-image that’s really different and even then only at the time the two of them partitioned.
With regard to Walky? Yeah, I think he’s more aware of his own problems than he lets on. I also think that Amazi-Girl isn’t sure exactly what she thinks of what he just said except that it was awkward!

not gonna lie, this is actually really selling me on the walky/amber-AG ship.
It is sweet that Walky is attracted both to what Amber and Amazi-Girl think is best in themselves and what they think is worst in themselves, but it’s likely to be rather tragic. Walky is someone they both think poorly of. Besides, they are not coping well with their traumas, and need expert treatment, not to sack with someone who looks a lot like Sal.
I wonder if it will make an impact at all on AG that Walky envies her ability to partition her mind.
