With the last strip’s punchline, I interpret Lucy’s rejection of this plan not being because she wouldn’t, but because her legs being asleep mean she probably can’t jump very well atm.

Maybe Lucy should try crawling over to Dorothy’s room, since her legs are probably still asleep right now. Though that might be pretty uncomfortable if she does that naked.

Yeah, I think the point Socks is making is that Lucy’s relationship with Walky isn’t hanging by anything, she’s just hanging on and hoping at this point.

I’ve been there, it sucks, and tbh for her sake it’d be better if all chances (in her eyes) were obliterated sooner rather than later.

That’s actually a topic of high debate. Some people think he’s so dense he hasn’t noticed, personally I don’t think he’s ever been shown to be that oblivious. I think he’s actually just not in the right mood to actually pursue a relationship right now so he’s not.

          May 12, 2021 at 12:16 am | #

I think it’s possible he hasn’t noticed but not a slam dunk, although I don’t think it’s because he’s super oblivious, there’ always a layer of masking on seeing other people’s feelings for you.

But it’s also possible he’s just not interested in a relationship or just not interested in her, although in that case it’s kind of lousy of him to know and not say anything. Definitely in the scope of his level of desire to deal with emotional conversations, but still pretty lousy.

Get comfortable with that “making it up as you go” feeling. I’m in my 40s now, and it is still with me often.

“Being a grownup” appears to be largely a thing that exists only in the minds of children – I think we all just keep faking it until we die.

Oh, I’ve absolutely accepted it. Hell, I’ve been telling the high school students that I mentor that while having even a general idea/plan thought out can be useful, you always need to be flexible enough to change that plan and just roll with the punches depending on how things outside of your control unfold.

I think that since Lucy hasn’t made a move yet there’s just enough ambiguity in her intentions to justify him not rejecting her if he recognizes her feelings. Unless one of them decides to actually intentionally pursue anything beyond friendship they’re kind of in this stalemate. This is the framework for basically every teenage romcom ever.

Yeah, since she’s not pushing the issue, it would be kind of awkward to force it himself just to shut it down. Also, even if he’s noticed, he’s likely not sure, so it would be even weirder to reject her when he could still be wrong.

I’m pretty sure we saw those posters already up when we first saw this room (when Jennifer was just moving in), or if not in that specific scene than definitely during some of the other Jennifer-Lucy interactions prior to the former’s attempt at self-sabotage by admitting her closet nerdiness among other things. (Would search to find an example, but on phone atm.)

Dotty did reveal a mystery third partner. Who knows exactly where that dude fits in on her timeline? It could’ve happened, although I think we’d have a least seen the guy once if it did and if she found someone else to bone I’m not sure why she’d be so thirsty for Walky unless that guy wasn’t so great for more than a one night thing.

I still think her third partner was prior to Danny. There’s something about her eyeroll back when she promised herself that one day, she’d date a guy who’s not a virgin that feels like Walky wasn’t just the second occurence of that sort of behavior, if only because she recognizes it as a pattern, and Danny and Walky alone wouldn’t be enoguh to establish it.

I don’t think it’s at all in character. She’s never done anything to indicate she’s interested in one-night stands. Or, specifically, given her established patterns, even if she decide that was the logical solution, she’d want to find someone she was attracted to, then she’d keep on going back to them until it was a de facto relationship.

Yeah, that’s bad advice! Clearly what Jennifer should do is tell Lucy the following — and she should know, since she was a cheerleader:

    OH WALKY YOU’RE SO FINE
YOU’RE SO FINE YOU BLOW MY MIND
    HEY WALKY! HEY WALKY!

    OH WALKY YOU’RE SO FINE
YOU’RE SO FINE YOU BLOW MY MIND
    HEY WALKY! HEY WALKY!

    Hey Walky!
You’ve been around all night and that’s a little long
You think you’ve got the right but I think you’ve got it wrong
Why can’t you say goodnight so you can take me home, Walky?

‘Cause when you say you will, it always means you won’t
You’re givin’ me the chills, baby, please baby don’t
Every night you still leave me all alone, Walky!

Oh Walky, what a pity you don’t understand
You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand
Oh Walky, you’re so pretty, can’t you understand??
    It’s guys like you Walky
Oh, what you do Walky, do Walky
    Don’t break my heart, Walky

So come on and give it to me any way you can
Any way you wanna do it, I’ll take it like a man
Oh please, baby, please, don’t leave me in a jam, Walky!

    OH WALKY YOU’RE SO FINE
YOU’RE SO FINE YOU BLOW MY MIND
    HEY WALKY! HEY WALKY!

God, I hate that song so much. When I was in elementary school, they’d play it in the cafeteria on the speakers during lunch hour every. Goddamn. Day. Since I was there for three years (it was the first school I went to for more than one year consecutively at that point–keep in mind that this was grades 4-6), I very quickly grew tired of it.

Between Nala and Lola Bunny from Space Jam, that one girl from Chip n’ Dale (I think her name was Gadget? 36. Spencer

I’m going with the idea now that Lucy’s self esteem is so shot that she thinks Walky’s outward persona is the best she can hope to achieve in terms of a relationship, that the person Walky presents himself as (but isn’t necessarily that person where it matters) is the highest standard of person who will like her back.

Given that Jennifer’s popularity in her dorm seemed to cause Lucy some dismay, it’s pretty clear at this point she is desperate for affection. If Walky actually were the person he presents himself as, an unhinged moron who constantly mocks everyone around him and puts no effort into even the slightest aspect of his life, then she’d be nuts, but that’s really the only Walky she knows, isn’t it? Dorothy and Amber got Walky at his best, as someone who meant and achieved genuine good for the both of them, but what has Walky imparted to Lucy where she’s got it this bad for him?

Yeah, that’s about where I’m settling as well. He’s cute and nerdy, so it’s not like he has ZERO good properties, but she’s been stuck on him long enough I have to assume she DOESN’T think she can do better.

Yeah like despite all my griping Walky isn’t a bad person. He’s not a walking miasma who ruins everyone’s lives for no reason, he’s a pretty clear example of a well defined and familiar character; the immature goofball who will throw himself into the lives of his loved ones without understanding how it contradicts all his stated beliefs about the Dreaded Feelings.

The people Walky has his deepest relationships with, Dorothy, Amber, Billie and Sal, I fully understand why they find their way back to him because for all the immaturity and talks of his bowel movements Walky will go to the ends of the earth for them. They know Walky, they know how good he can be, they know how much he cares and he will try to show it as best as he can (his entire relationship with Dorothy, establishing Garbage Roof for Amber when Danny and Ethan didn’t understand that Amber needs to have time to feel bad without a pep talk, Billie when she went missing and Walky lead a search party, and Sal reforging her bond with Walky after he made legitimate efforts into understanding what drove them apart and how he can fix it).

Lucy, at least as far as her interactions with Walky have been shown to us, really doesn’t have that yet. She only knows Walky as the immature doofus and while that could be enough for a crush I don’t think that’s all that’s waiting in the wing if Lucy and Walky’s relationship is going to have story focus going forward after all the focus it’s had since the timeskip. Walky’s never shown his true self to her, so I kind of put her interactions with him on the same level as Sarah and Joyce, who both hate him because Walky doesn’t let himself be genuine around them and consequently all they know is his worst, most obnoxious persona.

Walky’s never been genuine with Lucy but he’s getting fawned over by a cute nerdy girl who shares all his interests and devotes a lot of time trying to get into his good graces, and in a series predicated on making all the wrong choices all the time, that’s just going to work out as intended?

Hell, if this is correct it does contextualize why Lucy is just completely incapable of vocalizing her thoughts to him: he’s supposed to want her, because Walky’s immature dorkus persona he’s presented to her should be as desperate for affection as Lucy seems to be, but he’s not biting. Lucy thinks there’s something wrong with her when even someone like Walky won’t want her (remember how absolutely elated she was when he became Nightguy and escorted her to her dorm? she was squeeing and cheering because it meant Walky had found a secret, roundabout way of showing he cared.

I think that people who assume that Lucy could do better are missing she wants Walky because he’s funny and approachable. “Better” is not what she wants.

          That’s boring.

I need angst. Sweet, fulfilling angst.

Though I don’t that when Dorothy first fell for him, he’d shown her much if any of that yet – I’d have to go back and read their early interactions. Was there much beyond stammering, throwing a toy and watching cartoons?

Was Dorothy as invested into Walky when they started dating, the way Lucy seems all over him now?

Like, Dorothy had a surface attraction to him because caramel abs, then she had a rough night and unwound herself at Walky’s with some cartoons, then they had another night where she asked him if he liked her, and there ya go.

Has Walky done anything for Lucy as simple as how he acted with Dorothy? Because at least with Dorothy Walky seemed cognizant of her existence.

Plot twist: Lucy follows through with Jen’s advice, only to find herself in a surprise three-way because Dorothy and Walky were already going at it right in the middle of the hallway.

The pod people stand at the edge of the panel in wide-eyed bewilderment, for a dorm legend has been born.

If Lucy isn’t careful that Starfire poster is going to start ragging on her for being ineffectual like Ethan’s Roadblock used to.

Really hope she runs into Ken. I know this is a different universe, but he seems like there would still be a mutual attraction with the two of them.

Since Ken and Lucy both work at Galasso’s, I suspect Ken was referring to Lucy in this comic: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-7/01-glower-vacuum/dangit/
