I think the more egregious assumption is that all of them would be fine with a male partner, given that thus far, two of them have only shown interest in women. Sarah doesn’t have the other-universe info that would back up her plan.
Asking a group to incorporate somebody else is a big ask. Asking a group to incorporate a third party is a huge ask. Asking them to just seduce some guy you acknowledge you don’t like, in order to ruin a 4th parties relationship with the third party, reducing the respect of the entire relationship to nothing more than lustbait, that’s stopped being something measurable in offhand size categories.

“Hey Roz fuck Joe” might work. The novelty of the request an the fact Joe’s good in the sack might get her inclined to grab the boy for another go.
“Hey Roz fuck Joe to ruin a relationship.” is gonna flip that right around. And Sarah’s actual manipulative ability is being shown here in that she has none. So she’d basically just say “Hey Roz fuck Joe to ruin a relationship.”
I don’t even understand what Sarah thinks this will prove. Sarah just offered herself to Joe, Joe accepted, and Joyce immediately forgave him. Why does Sarah think Joyce wouldn’t forgive Joe if Joe accepted a proposition from three girls instead of one? By standard macho calculus, three girls at the same time is a greater temptation. Plus, Joe in particular has already shown a specific interest in having sex with multiple partners because he once lied about having done it already and then came clean and said he hasn’t. If anything that’s MORE forgivable under the “sex = temptation” paradigm Joyce seems to be applying to Joe here anyway.
Sarah offered herself to Joe and he accepted, but they never actually went through with anything. That could lead to some doubt… maybe Joe would have backed out at the last minute, maybe Joe was really “just kidding” when he accepted, etc.. It makes it a little easier to forgive someone if their mistakes are all theoretical.
Its only if he goes through with some sexual encounter will it be completely solid evidence that “Joe really can’t be trusted to stay faithful”. Sarah might think that that is enough to change the Joe/Joyce relationship.
Looking back at it, I’m pretty sure she changed her hair to blue when Becky started hanging out in the dorm (there can be only one orange-head-lander?), and changed it back after Robin called her “safely ethnic” for being “white with dyed hair” during the Birthday party for Dina that Becky threw (which she tried to cover up with a “Re-elect Desanto Party” banner when Robin came home early).
Either way, Mandy’s only appearance since that was as a background character in the mandatory floor meeting at the start of second semester (where she had her original orange hair), so that barely counts.
I guess that could have been the motivation, but since we didn’t see her between then and the timeskip, it’s hard to say. It could have been right away. It could have been months later over the Christmas holidays.
The thing about a polycule is that it doesn’t necessarily mean all the people in it are romantically or sexually involved with each other. You could have, say, Bob and Jane dating, and Jane also dating Jack, while Bob and Jack are only friendly with each other.
For example, you can have a polycule in which everyone is straight. Alice sleeps with Bob and Carl; Bob also sleeps with Denise; hopefully, Bob and Carl like each other, but they might have zero interest in each other’s body, and likewise for Alice and Denise. Or in some poly arrangements, Bob and Carl might not even know each other.
Poly covers quite a range. The important thing is honesty, not who’s sleeping with whom.
Why not just use the broader terms of ‘prejudice’ and ‘bigotry’?
That having been said, yes, Sarah’s behavior here is a form of that. She’s making potentially hurtful assumptions based on outward appearances and stereotypes.
I can’t recall if there’s a term for the prejudice that poly ppl experience, made worse by the fact its not a protected class. I literally got fired over it, ironically I was actually monogamous, but happened to be dating a poly person.
How the fuck does that work? Not you dating a poly person, you being fired for dating, well anyone honestly poly or nit. Feels illegal. Although I guess laws in the US are slowly changing in certain states to allow any discrimination if it make you feel better with god, so maybe that’s the answer?
Just because there’s a law doesn’t mean it’s useful in a practical way. Suing your employer to get your job back is kinda like setting fire to the bridge you want to be standing on.
Unless they were also working at the same company; then not so strange. Some companies don’t want to deal with work fallout of relationships breaking up or superiors/subordinates emotionally attached or coworkers or subordinates being pressured to date. But if that’s their policy, they have to say so in advance.
Does she even have the necessary “social currency” to do that? She is not exactly a friendly person and I don’t think she is anywhere near close to the three girls to even suggest such a thing.
Oh, you mean Sierra and Dorothy! It took me a while because Becky didn’t have any former roommates at this college, and she’s the very loudly proclaimed Joyce’s Best Friend.
Would Joe be a ‘tough sell’ (as opposed to any other man)?
Joe is considered to be the traditional “classic” masculine/attractive man, so if any of them are bisexual they might consider him hansom enough.
There is the issue of Joe’s personality and his obsession with sex. This would have been an issue with someone like Sarah or Rachael, but not all women will react the same way. I don’t recall any sort of negative interactions between Joe and any of the other characters to suggest it would be a problem. And Joe did sort of “hit on” Sierra once… while we don’t have any evidence that it went anywhere, its not like Sierra was repulsed by him.
Remember that Joe had that “hotness rating” list of all the local gals. Base Joe’s decent looking and Roz has said he’s good in the sack but the known objectification has the perception of many down as “ew.” Even if they are all sexually attracted to conventionally attractive males, Joe specifically would not appeal.
It’s academic though, since this inappropriate ask is so egregious nobody even waited to hear it was Joe before rejection was obvious.
That works in Sarah’s favor though. It would prove Joe’s still the kind of misogynist creep that thinks a very sapphic relationship still craves a man. Something I’d easily believe he would think at the start of his character.
She’s not asking them to actually do it. Just to participate in her weird scheme to break up someone’s relationship by getting the guy to agree to cheat. Presumably, in her mind, Joe says yes, Joyce dumps him, they say haha gotcha nevermind, Joe now has zero threesomes and zero girlfriends.
This is definitely something a reasonable person would expect someone polyamorous to agree to be a party to.
It’s also exactly what Sarah already did, as just a single person, in earshot of Joyce. And Joe happily agreed, it was just slamming the door in his face that shut it down. Point being even if it works they wouldn’t super likely seal the deal (poly people and monogamous bs are like oil and water, for a whole polycule to agree to get tangled in some new monog dumpster fire between a recently reformed christian and a jewish guy just seems extremely unlikely), so it wouldn’t hold any greater weight compared to him wanting to dick down with her roommate at a moment’s notice.
I need to stress that I am actually very much a joe/joyce shipper, and don’t think him heeding sarah’s call is egregious and wrong, likewise I also don’t think sarah attempting to break them up is so egregious and wrong either – they’re both operating within the limits of their characters and personalities, joyce knows and understands them both, and I think this will end up being educational for everyone. I don’t know if it will make them less dumb, but it certainly theoretically could!
Exactly how is that cheating? Joe and Joyce have tacitly agreed that they like each other and are mutually attracted. That’s pretty much their entire deal at this point.
They’ve explicitly agreed they like each other. They’ve said they’re dating. Joyce introduced him to her mom as “my boyfriend”.
They even brought up cheating (in a weird conversation about laundry and emotional cheating, but still).
They may not have explicitly said “We are in an exclusive relationship and shouldn’t have sex with other people”, but short of being legalistic about it, it’s pretty damn clear.
Since the plan is for THEM to proposition HIM, how would it work to prove anything about his false assumptions? He wouldn’t be the one assuming they want him, they’d be telling him (falsely) that they want him.
I mean, in the hypothetical situation where the three-woman polycule approaches a man and says “hi, do you want to have a foursome with us”, it would be safe for that man to assume they want to have sex with him.
They’re all bi/pan/some flavour of into multiple genders. They were into guys in Walkyverse so that’d still be true here. But they seem pretty happy with their triad here.
None of these kids is enough of a webcomics nerd to develop an interest in something that ended before they were even born. (Give or take a few years.) The biggest comics nerds amongst them are mostly into robots and/or superheroes. Dorothy is aware of Persepolis but maybe she only saw the movie. Joyce might start a webcomic in the future but I don’t think she’s there yet.
Given that Sarah has to commit this offer to *three women* all of whom don’t seem to have much of an interest in men, I imagine it’s going to be one of those little plot arcs where they go “Good bye, Sarah” and gently close the door on her while she fumes about how she’s still right.

I’m hearing a lot about who Mandy loves and who Sierra loves, but noticing a distinct lack of who Grace loves. Is Grace only in this mutual multi-directional relationship for the high of having two wonderful ladies love her without having to give anything back!? There’s a story to be told here!

Bad Sarah! Asking three other women to coerce Joe into boffing them so he doesn’t pay attention to Joyce? Shame on ya, girl – or are you anticipating that Joyce would be turned off to him just because he shows what a horndog he is?
Not to mention that just because he gets involved in a throuple/foursome doesn’t mean that he ignores Joyce completely. I’m too far removed from the dating/relationship picture these days to know how things go now, but back when I was getting the chance to make it with someone else would have just been considered a bonus.
And, of course, there’s always the possibility that Joe HAS changed and would turn the offer down in favor of maintaining his budding relationship with Joyce.
Some women will react badly to the ‘do’ list (e.g. Rachael), some might not like the list but would accept his apology (mmmm… donuts), some might not care or have even heard about it (after all there is a certain amount of gossipiness about it), and some might even LIKE the idea. (Remember, Malaya used it as part of her “come on” to Joe)
I mean it already short circuited when she learned about polyamory when she caught Sierra *not-cheating* and kissing either Mandy or grace, who she thought had been dating each other.
Also I have no doubts that Joyce could pull off a polyamory v style relationship where she’s also dating Dorothy, and Dorothy very much so is NOT dating Joe, but I think Joyce needs another few months of introspection regarding sexuality, so this might be a 2026 prediction.
* Dorothy has learned that Joe really is trying to be a better man for Joyce and while she’s forgiven him his past, she still immensely dislikes him.
Honestly hoping Joe actually actively resists it and doesnt buy into it. Seeing how fast he jumped at Sarah makes me skeptical.
But if he manages the JoJo ship will be stronger for it. It’s a good conflict to strengthen them together.
However I hate that its Sarah doing this. She used to be one of my favorite characters. Now I only like her when a character I like less is being compared to her. Which sucks.
I know, I feel the same way rabbit. Pre time skip Sarah was a perfect example of a lovable grouch who showed care in their own way. Now we’re just informed of her goodness while she exhibits nothing but super toxic behavior.
At least this isn’t a particularly subtle plot. If it works this easily – if Joe cheats just because he gets propositioned, then it was always going to happen anyway.
Sarah believes he’s not serious about Joyce. That he hasn’t changed and isn’t trying to. His reaction to her offer didn’t change that. This is just an escalation of that.
The plan is just to show Joyce that Joe’s not serious
The problem with this is the plan still involves hurting Joyce intentionally. It’s one thing to not like a friends SO. It’s reasonable from that standpoint to expose wrongdoing on the SO’s part, even if for obviously reasons that hurts your friends feelings. That’s being a good friend. Intentionally creating the wrongdoings, however, makes you a terrible friend.
Whatever happens, it prolly wouldn’t ‘blow up’ as much as it could’ve as long she doesn’t like, drag her mom back into the picture and letting her know and the mom cockblocking them
Apropos of nothing in this discussion, the video ads that keeps popping up and totally covering the lower right quadrant of the screen are getting really fucking annoying. Willis, this is your website … I know you’re making/saving a small amount by allowing ads, but can’t you do something about them when they start obstructing the site itself?
It’s pretty impressive Sarah somehow managed to top Dorothy’s “let’s masturbate!” plan to get rid of Joe. Really pushing the limit on bad ideas, these ladies. I respect it.
One can hope. Her attitude is a bit terrible these days. It’d be good for her to learn that there’s more to being a good friend than just being an overprotective asshole.
I’m still waiting for that shoe to drop. Walky clearly has unresolved feelings regarding Amber imo, and he also is so laid back in his relationship with Lucy. That whole situation is a powder keg waiting to kaboom imo.

1. I don’t remember if Sarah has had previous interactions with Mandy, but it kinda looks (also by Mandy’s comment) that Sarah is only now showing up here to ask a favor
2. Sarah assuming the three would even be remotely interested in doing anything with Joe
3. “My dumb roommate”. I understand that Sarah feels she needs to protect Joyce from herself. But this makes it look like she does it nor for Joyce’s sake but because she (Sarah) does not want to deal with the (in her eyes inevitable) fallout.

Checking the archives, one of Mandy’s appearances was when Joe’s list became public knowledge and not being amused by that. So chances she would go anywhere near him are even slimmer.
Maybe I misread Mandy’s opening statement. I could also mean that Sarah *does* occasionally knock to just say hello, just that Mandy never expects it given Sarah’s antisocial tendencies
they’ve prolly briefly interacted off screen, or maybe everyone talking among themselves during the ‘ding dong bandit’ mini arc, if they’re within walking distance to knock on they at least know each others names, or joyce being friendly with everyone enough for sarah to remember her name from osmosis
This is another one of those strips where you absolutely don’t NEED to know the Walkyverse existed but dang it is nice to see how far Willis has come as a writer since then, and we all know that he acknowledged it when that arc ran on the rerun site, but like, it’s nice.

I thought names were super-important to fae, and were relevant to who they truly are (as opposed to the mask they show other people). Having them just inherit family names feels so…mundane.
I feel like this could backfire in a couple different ways
– what if Joyce has polyamory explained to her and decides to have an open relationship?
– what if Joyce thinks one of them is hot?
I don’t think Sarah is proposing an ACTUAL foursome, just the idea of it to prove that Joe is no good. And yes, that’s an awful thing for Sarah to do, but it’s also the setup to a very good punchline.

Jacob’s been AWOL since the Joyce Enacts a Sitcom Plot business concluded. The last we saw of him was him telling Joe about the cross universe cross-time mind meld with her Roomies! self in its immediate aftermath.
His absence probably means he’s doing well for himself, though I do wonder if he isn’t worried for his roommate’s well-being.
(Speaking as a person in a polycule) On one hand, I’m miffed at Sarah for suggesting the polycule to just invite a stranger into their sex lives. It’s no different than if she would ask any couple randomly to have a threesome with a random person, the polycule participants are established and known to each other.
On the other, Mandy, you can’t deny that threesomes happen in a throuple. Always having one-on-on gets time-consuming! Two birds, one stone!
It’s possible that she would do that, and simply doesn’t know any couples consisting of two girls who are both bisexual (and does have some, established off panel, reason beyond assumptions to believe that all three of them are bisexual)

If it’s the same as asking a couple, then the throuple has a distinct numerical advantage for sabotaging someone, and therefore it makes more sense to ask them first. She wants a large quantity of women on Joe, so it follows.

Sarah is very interesting to me. She is nearly the polar opposite of Mike privilege-wise, and we get to see her in-depth arc from comical sourpuss misanthrope to Mike 2.0.
The stuff she is doing here is on a SURFACE level almost identical to Mike’s last ploy of messing with Danny. “Have a dude be seduced to break him off from someone else”.
This is pretty great in my opinion. My favourite part is that we also get to see the effect that this gradual decline has had on us readers; it does make sense that a lot more people will defend a person whose inner workings they’ve been privy to for a longer time. It’s cool how the human mind works.

I don’t even understand what Sarah thinks this will prove. Sarah just offered herself to Joe, Joe accepted, and Joyce immediately forgave him. Why does Sarah think Joyce wouldn’t forgive Joe if Joe accepted a proposition from three girls instead of one? By standard macho calculus, three girls at the same time is a greater temptation. Plus, Joe in particular has already shown a specific interest in having sex with multiple partners because he once lied about having done it already and then came clean and said he hasn’t. If anything that’s MORE forgivable under the “sex = temptation” paradigm Joyce seems to be applying to Joe here anyway.
Sarah offered herself to Joe and he accepted, but they never actually went through with anything. That could lead to some doubt… maybe Joe would have backed out at the last minute, maybe Joe was really “just kidding” when he accepted, etc.. It makes it a little easier to forgive someone if their mistakes are all theoretical.
Its only if he goes through with some sexual encounter will it be completely solid evidence that “Joe really can’t be trusted to stay faithful”. Sarah might think that that is enough to change the Joe/Joyce relationship.

Looking back at it, I’m pretty sure she changed her hair to blue when Becky started hanging out in the dorm (there can be only one orange-head-lander?), and changed it back after Robin called her “safely ethnic” for being “white with dyed hair” during the Birthday party for Dina that Becky threw (which she tried to cover up with a “Re-elect Desanto Party” banner when Robin came home early).
Either way, Mandy’s only appearance since that was as a background character in the mandatory floor meeting at the start of second semester (where she had her original orange hair), so that barely counts.
I guess that could have been the motivation, but since we didn’t see her between then and the timeskip, it’s hard to say. It could have been right away. It could have been months later over the Christmas holidays.

The thing about a polycule is that it doesn’t necessarily mean all the people in it are romantically or sexually involved with each other. You could have, say, Bob and Jane dating, and Jane also dating Jack, while Bob and Jack are only friendly with each other.
Yep, there are such things as Vees and triangles and chains, but chains usually involve 4 or more people.
For example, you can have a polycule in which everyone is straight. Alice sleeps with Bob and Carl; Bob also sleeps with Denise; hopefully, Bob and Carl like each other, but they might have zero interest in each other’s body, and likewise for Alice and Denise. Or in some poly arrangements, Bob and Carl might not even know each other.
Poly covers quite a range. The important thing is honesty, not who’s sleeping with whom.

There is the issue of Joe’s personality and his obsession with sex. This would have been an issue with someone like Sarah or Rachael, but not all women will react the same way. I don’t recall any sort of negative interactions between Joe and any of the other characters to suggest it would be a problem. And Joe did sort of “hit on” Sierra once… while we don’t have any evidence that it went anywhere, its not like Sierra was repulsed by him.

Remember that Joe had that “hotness rating” list of all the local gals. At least this isn’t a particularly subtle plot. If it works this easily – if Joe cheats just because he gets propositioned, then it was always going to happen anyway.
Sarah believes he’s not serious about Joyce. That he hasn’t changed and isn’t trying to. His reaction to her offer didn’t change that. This is just an escalation of that.

The problem with this is the plan still involves hurting Joyce intentionally. It’s one thing to not like a friends SO. It’s reasonable from that standpoint to expose wrongdoing on the SO’s part, even if for obviously reasons that hurts your friends feelings. That’s being a good friend. Intentionally creating the wrongdoings, however, makes you a terrible friend.
And here she is, back again trying to desperately wrestle my least favorite character status away from Jennifer. Can Sarah do no good?

I thought names were super-important to fae, and were relevant to who they truly are (as opposed to the mask they show other people). Having them just inherit family names feels so…mundane.

Sarah is very interesting to me. She is nearly the polar opposite of Mike privilege-wise, and we get to see her in-depth arc from comical sourpuss misanthrope to Mike 2.0.
The stuff she is doing here is on a SURFACE level almost identical to Mike’s last ploy of messing with Danny. “Have a dude be seduced to break him off from someone else”.
This is pretty great in my opinion. My favourite part is that we also get to see the effect that this gradual decline has had on us readers; it does make sense that a lot more people will defend a person whose inner workings they’ve been privy to for a longer time. It’s cool how the human mind works.
It is to Willis’ awesome credit that Mike BELIEVED he was a Warrior Therapist but in the Dumbing of Age world, had the horrifying realization that just made him like Blaine.
