Anyway, I do wonder what you guys see in it compared to rugby. I am hardly a fan of rugby, but your football just seem like the same thing, except slower and more boring.
Why is basketball called basketball? You run with your feet and make the positions of the basket and the ball coincide!

Why is football called football? You run with your feet and make the positions of feet and ball coincide! Except for America, which follows the trend of having a baseball ‘World Series’ which doesn’t let Japan take part.
Football is called football because you can only move the ball with your feet. That’s the entire premise. If making use of a ball and using your feet to move from point to point were enough to qualify a game to be called ‘football’, then /EVERY SINGLE BALLGAME NOT PLAYED IN A BOAT/ would be just as qualified to be called ‘football’.
Wrong. Football is called football because its played ON FOOT, as opposed to on horseback like other games at the time the sport was invented.
See also — Gaelic Football, the national sport of Ireland. You can carry the ball, but it’s still football (incidentally, Ireland seems to be the only other country besides the USA to call football “Soccer”, probably because football here refers to Gaelic)
There’s also Australian Rules Football, an offshoot of Gaelic, where you can carry the ball but its still football.
And on another note, who’s wrong with enjoying all or most sports? Why does one have to enjoy football to the exclusion of American Football? They’re both fun.

Most sport are dumb, dull, pointless. Or at least the majority of “huge stadiums, and millions watching on TV” type sports. Doing some of those sports (as opposed to watching), can be better. But most of the best sports are things like cycling, skiing, rock climbing. Doing instead of watching, and none of this “win/lose” crap, none of this “team” crap.
For me personally, it’s about 50% community/family being into it. 20% fantasizing I could do better than the coach. 10% having something to talk about besides work. 10% nostalgia for playing it as a kid. 10% the unscripted highs and lows of following a team creating a natural narrative arc. I am pretty sure most sports aren’t enjoyed for the sports themselves.
The synthetic self esteem is the big one for a lot of fans. I think the entertainment value takes second position behind it. It’s why people act like they’ve been wronged when the team does poorly.
Association football (sometimes known by the British slang term, ‘soccer’) seems exactly as boring to me as American football, which is very. Also, while I’m not an expert I believe rugby union has way more players than American football, although the general rules are very similar.
Uh, that’s sort of the point, isn’t it? They are slow enough for a drunk to follow. In contrast, things like table tennis or Judo don’t make good spectator sports.
Everything that’s important happens way too fast to be seen in a haze.
I don’t get the point of spectator sports in general. Why would I want to watch someone else play a game where I have no investment in the outcome?
Football I find especially pointless. Other sports I can enjoy playing, if not watching; football has way too many stupid and obscure rules about what you are and aren’t allowed to do for a game largely centered around violence.
Oh, you know, big get together, chance to get out of doors, hopefully meet new people, probably occupies at least one night of their life with something other than drugs, alcohol, immolation, or whatever is supposed to fall under the blanket heading of “troubled”.
More like, “that kid has two jobs, a full course load and doesn’t go to ANY of the parties we publicly tell the freshman not to go to but then invite them to anyway…s/he MUST be troubled! Better pick a partying junior to bug the Hell out of them and be his/her friend!”
RAs do other things besides live in the dorms. If she’s not on duty, and there’s no problem exploding in front of her, she probably wants to get out of the Family Weekend #&%$-fest just as much as everyone else.

If I were RA, I’d be terrified of exposing myself if he came back, or if she did something rash, because you can bet it’d be the RA’s head on the block.
The whole parents’ weekend story line has been full of jerky transitions honestly. Though this one is definitely the most noticeable. It highlights all of the chaos that is going on I suppose.

I don’t go to a big ten school, but I know ours doesn’t let us get in for free . . . we get a heft discount and special seating, but we never get in for free.
I went to a MAC school, and we got into everything for free, as long as we had a school ID. (even non-students who were with us only paid like, $10)
As far as I know, no, Big Ten schools don’t give out free tickets. Or if they do, it’s a scramble to get them. Like, I do know that Ohio State allows students to get a certain number of home game tickets in the student section for a significantly reduced price, and you have to be SUPER flexible about what tickets you want. (like, good luck getting one for the Michigan game. There are actual wounds sustained)
So no, it’s not a jab at the schools being bad (not that I could say otherwise, being from a Buckeyes-fans family and risking losing my inheritance), it was more of an “oooooooohhhhhh riiiiiiiiiiight” comment.

well, like football, WOW is almost impossible to follow except if you know what’s going on already or have someone there willing to patiently explain, and there are 2 teams fighting over the same thing that are, at the end of the day, not so different.

I typed out a long rant about how much I hated the “troubled teen” status, but then realized that thinking about how annoying the dorm staff was didn’t put me in such a great mood, so I stopped.

Anyway, I do wonder what you guys see in it compared to rugby. I am hardly a fan of rugby, but your football just seem like the same thing, except slower and more boring.

If making use of a ball and using your feet to move from point to point were enough to qualify a game to be called ‘football’, then /EVERY SINGLE BALLGAME NOT PLAYED IN A BOAT/ would be just as qualified to be called ‘football’.
Wrong. Football is called football because its played ON FOOT, as opposed to on horseback like other games at the time the sport was invented.
See also — Gaelic Football, the national sport of Ireland. You can carry the ball, but it’s still football (incidentally, Ireland seems to be the only other country besides the USA to call football “Soccer”, probably because football here refers to Gaelic)
There’s also Australian Rules Football, an offshoot of Gaelic, where you can carry the ball but its still football.
And on another note, who’s wrong with enjoying all or most sports? Why does one have to enjoy football to the exclusion of American Football? They’re both fun.

Most sport are dumb, dull, pointless. Or at least the majority of “huge stadiums, and millions watching on TV” type sports. Doing some of those sports (as opposed to watching), can be better. But most of the best sports are things like cycling, skiing, rock climbing. Doing instead of watching, and none of this “win/lose” crap, none of this “team” crap.

Also, um… you can’t use your hands in soccer, but I’m pretty sure it’s not true that you can only use your feet.
For me personally, it’s about 50% community/family being into it. 20% fantasizing I could do better than the coach. 10% having something to talk about besides work. 10% nostalgia for playing it as a kid. 10% the unscripted highs and lows of following a team creating a natural narrative arc. I am pretty sure most sports aren’t enjoyed for the sports themselves.
The synthetic self esteem is the big one for a lot of fans. I think the entertainment value takes second position behind it. It’s why people act like they’ve been wronged when the team does poorly.
Think Rugby League with one forward pass per ‘down’ (you get 4 downs instead of 6 ‘tackles’), lots of tea breaks, plus

Football I find especially pointless. Other sports I can enjoy playing, if not watching; football has way too many stupid and obscure rules about what you are and aren’t allowed to do for a game largely centered around violence.

The whole parents’ weekend story line has been full of jerky transitions honestly. Though this one is definitely the most noticeable. It highlights all of the chaos that is going on I suppose.

Help me out, I’m a chump who doesn’t follow non-East Coast conferences and the whole “no free tickets” thing kind of confused me too.
I don’t go to a big ten school, but I know ours doesn’t let us get in for free . . . we get a heft discount and special seating, but we never get in for free.
I went to a MAC school, and we got into everything for free, as long as we had a school ID. (even non-students who were with us only paid like, $10)
As far as I know, no, Big Ten schools don’t give out free tickets. Or if they do, it’s a scramble to get them. Like, I do know that Ohio State allows students to get a certain number of home game tickets in the student section for a significantly reduced price, and you have to be SUPER flexible about what tickets you want. (like, good luck getting one for the Michigan game. There are actual wounds sustained)
So no, it’s not a jab at the schools being bad (not that I could say otherwise, being from a Buckeyes-fans family and risking losing my inheritance), it was more of an “oooooooohhhhhh riiiiiiiiiiight” comment.

I typed out a long rant about how much I hated the “troubled teen” status, but then realized that thinking about how annoying the dorm staff was didn’t put me in such a great mood, so I stopped.

It’s funny, I have often said that College football is the real U.S. national religion. In Canada, they would have to pay us to go to a football game, the games were free, and still hardly anybody went to watch the games. Hockey, on the other hand . . .
