The one where he watched like a few episodes of the show dubbed and decided her knew something about it? And calls the main character stupid and a slut because she *gasp* wears a short skirt? And talks about how lesbians give him the boner?

Yeah, I really don’t care about some white dude’s “informed opinions” on a story created by a Japanese woman and aimed for young girls, when he barely did any research.

He did. He does point out that the age of consent is lower in japan, and he is surprised about the censorship of lesbians but not the sexualization of minors

That doesn’t make “barely did any research” accurate. If I had started out with the viewpoint Nev is complaining about and had decided to do five minutes of halfassed research and call it good, that information is probably the sort of thing that would pop up in my Googling.

          1) Why don’t you make a point to specify what was so shoddy about his opinion and research? What could he have done better?

          2) He wasn’t commenting on the series as a whole, he was talking specifically about the cartoon’s impact in America when it first aired in the 90’s. So of course he only gonna talk about the English dub and how they made sailor moon quite ditzy, because thats what was aired. No one watched the Japanese version because it wasn’t available

          3) You have informed opinion in quotes. Who said that? It wasn’t Doug Walker nor anyone else here. Doug just said his opinion and talked his reasoning as to why he felt the way he did/

          4) Also most of the reactions were played up for comedic effect, notably the lesbians.

          5) Oh yeah he never called her a slut. He did mention how her clothes were revealing for American (and Japanese for that matter) standards, especially given that she supposed to be 14. He could’ve mentioned that it was a Japanese fad to pull up ones school uniform skirt to defy uniform regulations, but honestly he spent more than enough time talking about the whole sexualization thing

Speaking of her hips, it’s obvious that this isn’t being drawn by a mainstream artist since there are two women in the comic who are both legally adults, yet we barely see a slight bit of one boob on one of them, and neither’s ass is visible whatsoever!

If this were coming out of one of the main publishers, we’d definitely get at least one panel with T&A.

Now, now, Liefeld is only the most memorably terrible artist of the ’90s. There were still plenty turning out work with visible eyes and at least semi-plausible anatomy.

That said, you’re right, she is lacking the required gun twice her size…

(Though, to be fair to Liefeld, he HAS improved noticably. He’s still not good, but he’s not nearly as bad as he was. And he does seem to be a nice enough guy who actually loves and cares about comics even though he’s a bad writer AND artist.)

Ruth’s always been pretty self-aware. She realizes the irony in her relationship with alcohol and her attraction to Billie.

Just that her self-awareness doesn’t really help her in changing those things, so it just makes her more depressed.

      • John
        John
        November 5, 2013 at 7:29 pm | #

True. It’s not really her self-awareness that was unexpected, now that I think on it, but that she actually came out and told Billie. But I guess she’s been letting Billie in on everything lately. It’s just such a radical change from her behaviour before the fire alarm, which often seemed to be specifically designed to keep Billie confused and off-balance, though that was probably mostly just a result of Ruth herself being confused and off-balance.

I actually like Danny more than Joe. Danny-for his faults-at least tries to think of other people’s feelings and considers the people around him as he lives his life.

Joe is a jerk of a bed-hopper who’s deepest though was if he wanted mustard on a corn dog at one point.

So yea, I’d rather have a flawed but more human character like Danny than an ass like Joe.

        November 5, 2013 at 1:00 pm | #

Joe’s not that bad. He berated Danny for thinking Billie can’t make her own decisions. He straight-up told Walky that he’s insecure in his masculinity and tries to defend that by projecting arbitrary gender roles/rules on others. He was embarrassed by his dad’s inappropriate behaviour. Being promiscuous, if done honestly and openly, isn’t a flaw. His main flaw is he doesn’t understand Danny, but he’s been trying to stay good friends regardless. And yeah, he can be shallow, but he’s not the only one.

No, it just goes to show that everything she does is deliberate. The whiplash moodswings, and pre-kiss Billie-abuse, were probably things she did for fun or to instil that power and sense of control through the fear of others.

          Ruth has control issues….most def.
Ruth starts with the guard all the way up.
Part of that guard is her taking the offensive.
          Then she opens little windows.
But she doesn’t lie about what she’s doing.

Still can’t stand this version of her. But I will admit she was a breath of fresh air while everyone’s horrible families were visiting.

    MR. WILLIS:

I know the character has just recently been introduced and is no longer a student, but would you consider adding Joshua to future fav. character polls?

Any other support for this, guys?

Why would Jocelyne appear when the poll is for favourite undergrad? A bunch of actual undergrads didn’t even make it.

Jocelyn isn’t an undergrad and so she won’t be in the undergrad poll.

Ruth and Billie are the one of the weirdest love stories. I hope it has a happy ending :p .

For a second, I thought the marks on Billie’s back were claw marks. I didn’t think it was weird until I realized there was a very low chance she fought a tiger between her room and Ruth’s.

Was I the only one who saw the title and expected that we’d see Joyce saying something funny?

Do you think there’s enough hate at the moment? Not that I don’t want them to, I do.
