On the topic of exploding Fanatical Christians…
I learned awhile ago that the fastest way to defuse a fanatical Christian who is acting oppressive is to quote something biblical that contradicts their actions, then say, “Luke 6:44.. a tree is judged by the fruit it bares.” Immediately follow with “Matthew 16:23- Get Thee Behind me Satan” and turn around and walk away from them.
To a fanatical Christian, probably one of the harshest hitting insults you can do.
For added damage, follow with quoting Matthew 10:14-15 as you walk away, “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment.” And tap your toes against the ground to “knock the dust away” as you walk away.
Most that turns from angry revigilantious to being stunned speechless. Will cause some to reevaluate their lives.
I tend to like Matthew 5:11-12 and use an interpretation where the fundamentalists are the ones falsely attacking others on account of Christ, and thus the ones that they would persecute are blessed. Always throws them for a loop.
Don’t fret too much, meeting a compatible person is in a very large part a matter of chance and trial-and-error. Being alone in the interim isn’t being pathetic, it’s a perfectly natural state. People who claim someone needs to be a part of a relationship to be complete are simply mistaken.

Hey, anyone know of a comedy that is actually, you know, funny? Not gross or stupid (no “Dumb and Dumber”, thanks), no fart jokes, no cringe “humor”; just, you know, actually funny? Doesn’t have to be a new movie. But do they even make those anymore?
Running Scared. Yes, it’s a buddy cop movie, but it is the wise-sensei grandfather of all buddy cop movies, and is simultaneously adrenaline-pumping, tear-jerking, and drop-dead hilarious.
The 80s one, I hope. With Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal.
The jokes about police brutality get to me these days, but it’s still brilliant.

It’s not always that simple. The Venture Bros. has been running for 13 years, but that run only consists of 6 seasons (the latest of which started tonight) and 70+ episodes. Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer’s fight for the freedom to walk away from a show and then come back whenever they please (before Louis CK made it cool) is a rare proverbial middle finger to that idea.
Okay, I just read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for like the 17th time, so I am now totally picturing them in a red convertable dressed as Duke and Gonzo (Dina is duke because Hat).

I had that image Willis posted of Becky and Dina on a motorcycle fighting Soggies as my wallpaper for like a month.
If it ever became a shirt, my money would rip itself from my wallet, fly towards the screen, digitize itself to traverse the internet, and materialize directly in Willis’ house as a Transformer made out of origami folded bills named Cashimus Prime.
Aww, that cute part of NRE (new relationship energy) where you don’t want to leave each other’s sides. Magnified by this being Dina’s first relationship. It is healthy that she is learning boundaries and letting Becky go off for a weekend now, but it’s still going to ache for her. Moreso because her brain will probably come up with lots of inaccurate and impossible things to worry about over the fact that Becky is going with her one-sided crush.
She’ll be okay, but in the meantime she’ll pine and when Becky gets back they’ll have all the cuddles.
Dorothy’s the most drama averse person when she actually makes an effort. She’d probably just tell Walky to let her help.
Hence, Walky’s probably going to sneak around it, because Willis is a wrathful god whose hunger can only be sated by inflicting misery and woe upon us.
Which, given that we have seen that Dorothy wants him to tell her stuff and feels hurt when he doesn’t, may cause more drama than if he just ‘fessed up now.
I’m starting to think Dorothy might have accepted that Walky’s always going to put walls up in their relationship to prevent it from becoming more than “for fun.” Walky can’t talk about Billie’s depression, he can’t talk about the “L” word, he can’t talk about his grades, because that’s feelings and vulnerabilities and the last star will die before Walky acknowledges he has those. Dorothy wants the relationship to be taken more seriously, (because it is), but knowing her she’s either going to keep talking at Walky to get him to open up, or eventually accept that it’s Walky, Walky won’t stop being him, and that maybe “for fun” isn’t what she wants anymore.
Only because they stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the fact that this “for fun” relationship is quickly becoming much more serious than either of them intended. It’s not hard to have a drama free relationship if you both are in denial about any issues until you are literally forced to address them.
That’s because the friendship thing has burned her badly. You don’t just suddenly stop being introverted and afraid to reach out to people.
She’d been getting better at expressing things with Joyce and what happened? Sarah said something Joyce didn’t want to hear and Joyce attacked her, using her intimate knowledge of Sarah’s past pain to hurt her as deeply as she could.
Joyce lashed out because Sarah constantly criticizes her and instead of actually suggesting anything to help the situation just went “do something different you idiot.” If I can forgive Sarah for being an asshole I think I can forgive Joyce for the same when she was desperately trying to protect her oldest and dearest friend from the campus, her parents and Toedad.
It wasn’t okay to say that in the same way it wasn’t okay when Sal called Walky immature so he threw the robbery back in her face, but Sarah’s a big girl, if she wants to act like an asshole all the time, even here where she had to correct herself from showing any kind of concern for Joyce, then I’m not gonna feel to broken up when somebody tears into her, let alone when she decided the best course of action when she found out she was right about Becky still having feelings for Joyce was to act smug about her emotional pain.
Exactly. That’s what I like about Sarah as a character. She’s convinced herself that she shouldn’t care about anyone, that she shouldn’t need anyone (except Other Jacob), that she’s beyond all that.
But she can’t do it. She can’t stop liking people. She can’t stop caring.
Then think about the business with Dana from that perspective. We’ve only really heard Sarah’s version of that, which we’d normally expect to be slanted to make her look good, but given that it’s Sarah probably means it’s slanted to make her look cold and practical and uncaring.
And Dina has finally cracked the barrier, and been the first character in this comic to have a voice in my head. Unfortunately, I suck at describing them.
The best I can do is that it’s kinda like Raven from the original Teen Titans, but without the sarcastic tone, and maybe a tiny bit more babyish.
(this is all pre-heelface turn for Peridot) She comes from the same people as the protagonist (Fundametalists vs Gems) who don’t like anyone different from them, displays a form of bigotry and is willing to say and do horrible things because of her blind faith to a being she views as perfect.
So maybe ordinary people don’t crack, Maybe there isn’t any need to crawl under a rock with all the other slimly things when trouble hits…maybe it was just you, all the time.
fyi, i don’t really pity you for naivete. i just wanted to quote sarah. i genuinely do wish that more people thought the way you do instead of enjoying the fact that mary is a throw-away character that they’re allowed to pile hate on. i wish everyone hoped for the best for even those who they didn’t particularly like. and i wish that mary, amber, willis, sarah, ruth, and anyone else with a negative opinion of anyone (justified or unjustified) would think that just hating others wasn’t ok.
i also wish i were awake enough to think of a way to rephrase that to not sound like i’m insulting characters whom i like. i really didn’t intend for it to sound mean or patronizing toward anyone
Starfire? Sure. I can hear the resemblance, especially in the cadence. But I think the pitch is lower, even when she’s super happy.
Like I said, I’m horrible at describing my head voices. As soon as I try, I can’t hear them anymore, so I have to try to remember what they sounded like.

Dina’s still so cute…I never want to hug anyone but her I would hug.
She’s kind of a pessimistic asshole who buries all her genuine caring and good intentions under miles of pissy language, says awful shit to people but then gets angry if anyone snipes back, and just seems plain determined to be as miserable as possible.
Everything I just listed is also why she’s one of my favourites.
Mike being an asshole isn’t why I hate him, lots of the assholes in the cast are interesting, but more that he’s a walking mess of contradictions. He needs to know every detail of every cast member and be supernaturally good at sussing out their weaknesses, but fantastical and cartoony enough that he can say gross shit without causing any damage because otherwise we’d need to acknowledge that a serial harasser who repeatedly targets women by holding their sexual history over them might be kind of fucked up. If he’s supposed to just be a comedy character, which is pretty gross since his main joke is “you’re a giant slut”, then he’s a comedy character who isn’t funny.
Mike’s entire shtick is either harassing the disenfranchised or bluntly stating a plot point. I honestly can’t think of a reason he’s in the series beyond being a popular hold over from Willis’ other work.
Mike isn’t even a character in this setting he’s a plot device that gets pulled out whenever there isn’t an actual realistic source of conflict or impetus for character development which is why we haven’t seen much of him in a good long while.
Well, he’s also a walking “joke” but maybe we’ve finally reached the point where being an unrepentant awful human being isn’t actually viewed as funny it’s just gross.
i could say something about your mom and nickels, but i don’t necessarily disagree with anything that’s been said. even though i haven’t hated mike with much venom (i’m not sure why), i do think that this comment thread has brought up some excellent points. he certainly is a walking plot device and occasional random-content generator who is a popular carry-over from previous works. i think he’s most likable when he’s saying random mean stuff which can be ignored
Dina’s relationship with Becky may, in fact, be too adorable. I didn’t know that was physically possible, but it already seems to have surpassed a playful kitten and is well on its way to “sleepy puppy” levels.
I originally thought that Becky impulse-joined Joyce on her trip home out of a yearning to recapture some of those lost “happy days” of her past and feel like she’s part of a family again.
But now, after seeing Dina, I’m beginning to wonder if Becky might not have an ulterior motive for wanting to be alone with Joyce again, without any of her new friends around. Especially given her “internal screaming” panel a few days back.
And of course, to support Joyce and spend time with the Browns, who she has known her entire life and who she gambles on will be more like their daughter than her father.
Just because it hurts sometimes doesn’t mean she’s going to try anything that stupid.
Sure, she’s still a bit hung up on Joyce and she still has that jealousy of Dorothy thing going, but none of that means she’s not also crazy about her dinosaur girl.
And the jealousy of Dorothy thing is as much “best-friend stealing” as anything else. Still one of Becky’s major flaws, if a very realistic one.
It wasn’t quite clear. They talked about it, but we didn’t see any actual conclusion. I think Joyce was still in the “No, you don’t have to come. My parents are going to be awful and I don’t want to put you through it” phase.
Which is why she was making “No, no” gestures at Becky a couple days back. And then Hank exceeded expectations and off they went.
Becky of course planned to go all along, unless Hank turned out to be really awful when he saw her, in which case I suspect she’d have tried to keep Joyce from going.

It’s probably because Sarah isn’t the sort to actively seek her out and pester her with demands that she open up (Dorothy) but is unlikely to ignore her and hide behind her own social anxieties when something needs to be said (Amber).
I was thinking along similar lines, myself, Dina neither wants to be pressured or pressure someone else. Whereas Sarah just does what is right, albeit with poor grace, something Onfind very appealing in a character.
Also, Dina likes Sarah’s bluntness. Sarah always says exactly what she means, which is a real relief for a person who has difficulty with body language and invisible social cues.
Before Becky, I can’t remember any situation where Dina and Dorothy interacted in a significant way, being in separate social circles. (Perhaps in the bathroom at the pizza place, but Dina was a definite 3rd wheel there.) The 2 of them do interact a bit more now, but its often in association with other people.
So maybe Dina just doesn’t know Dorothy well enough to confide in Dorothy.
Dina has paid close attention to her social circle and sought out Sarah, rather than Dorothy to talk to. I think that is based as much on her liking Sarah as it is Becky not liking Dorothy.
Sarah has been an enigma for me as of late. Like she cares but she wants to look like she doesn’t care but then she does and says things that are just this side of meddling in the name of caring for people. I dunno.
It just occurred to me that Becky may have just unknowingly foiled Mary’s evil scheme to hold her presence over Ruth by not being there for the weekend.
It seems like too nice a way for things to work out in the Dumbiverse, though.
I do not understand these comments. I even went back and binged a bit after seeing some older comics. And I was right: the vast majority of the comics are happy or funny or heartwarming or empowering, with just the occasional drop into a horrible funk.
IOW, this is a fairly positive comic. So why does everyone act like all Willis does is make tears?
My guess is that those occasional drops are such strong, hard gut-punches*, especially when contrasted with the otherwise fairly upbeat comic.
It reminds me that sometimes, the rare thing is what stands out. Apparently, when creators get either mostly positive or mostly negative feedback about something, they sort of get used to that… And then there’s that one message that is the complete opposite, and it breaks (or makes) the day for them, filling up their internal world. Our brains are weird.
*Especially because quite often, Willis is drawing upon his own experiences to make it seem much more real.

Running Scared. Yes, it’s a buddy cop movie, but it is the wise-sensei grandfather of all buddy cop movies, and is simultaneously adrenaline-pumping, tear-jerking, and drop-dead hilarious.

The jokes about police brutality get to me these days, but it’s still brilliant.
Of course, all my recommendations come from the 80s and tend to be that kind of semi-action comedies. Full of wit rather than cringe.

Aww, that cute part of NRE (new relationship energy) where you don’t want to leave each other’s sides. Magnified by this being Dina’s first relationship. It is healthy that she is learning boundaries and letting Becky go off for a weekend now, but it’s still going to ache for her. Moreso because her brain will probably come up with lots of inaccurate and impossible things to worry about over the fact that Becky is going with her one-sided crush.
She’ll be okay, but in the meantime she’ll pine and when Becky gets back they’ll have all the cuddles.

Dorothy’s the most drama averse person when she actually makes an effort. She’d probably just tell Walky to let her help.
Hence, Walky’s probably going to sneak around it, because Willis is a wrathful god whose hunger can only be sated by inflicting misery and woe upon us.
Which, given that we have seen that Dorothy wants him to tell her stuff and feels hurt when he doesn’t, may cause more drama than if he just ‘fessed up now.
I’m starting to think Dorothy might have accepted that Walky’s always going to put walls up in their relationship to prevent it from becoming more than “for fun.” Walky can’t talk about Billie’s depression, he can’t talk about the “L” word, he can’t talk about his grades, because that’s feelings and vulnerabilities and the last star will die before Walky acknowledges he has those. Dorothy wants the relationship to be taken more seriously, (because it is), but knowing her she’s either going to keep talking at Walky to get him to open up, or eventually accept that it’s Walky, Walky won’t stop being him, and that maybe “for fun” isn’t what she wants anymore.
Only because they stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the fact that this “for fun” relationship is quickly becoming much more serious than either of them intended. It’s not hard to have a drama free relationship if you both are in denial about any issues until you are literally forced to address them.
Dorothy’s acknowledged it and is trying to deal with that. Walky not so much.
Walky is bad at dealing with anything that requires effort on his part.

She took a bat to a rapist’s skull for Joyce and she’s still semi-convinced that Sarah hates her. Sarah does not make the friendship thing easy!
That’s because the friendship thing has burned her badly. You don’t just suddenly stop being introverted and afraid to reach out to people.
She’d been getting better at expressing things with Joyce and what happened? Sarah said something Joyce didn’t want to hear and Joyce attacked her, using her intimate knowledge of Sarah’s past pain to hurt her as deeply as she could.
Joyce lashed out because Sarah constantly criticizes her and instead of actually suggesting anything to help the situation just went “do something different you idiot.” If I can forgive Sarah for being an asshole I think I can forgive Joyce for the same when she was desperately trying to protect her oldest and dearest friend from the campus, her parents and Toedad.
It wasn’t okay to say that in the same way it wasn’t okay when Sal called Walky immature so he threw the robbery back in her face, but Sarah’s a big girl, if she wants to act like an asshole all the time, even here where she had to correct herself from showing any kind of concern for Joyce, then I’m not gonna feel to broken up when somebody tears into her, let alone when she decided the best course of action when she found out she was right about Becky still having feelings for Joyce was to act smug about her emotional pain.
The last few times she’s done that, it hurt her.
She’s trying to convince herself to stop.

Exactly. That’s what I like about Sarah as a character. She’s convinced herself that she shouldn’t care about anyone, that she shouldn’t need anyone (except Other Jacob), that she’s beyond all that.
But she can’t do it. She can’t stop liking people. She can’t stop caring.
Then think about the business with Dana from that perspective. We’ve only really heard Sarah’s version of that, which we’d normally expect to be slanted to make her look good, but given that it’s Sarah probably means it’s slanted to make her look cold and practical and uncaring.

Mike being an asshole isn’t why I hate him, lots of the assholes in the cast are interesting, but more that he’s a walking mess of contradictions. He needs to know every detail of every cast member and be supernaturally good at sussing out their weaknesses, but fantastical and cartoony enough that he can say gross shit without causing any damage because otherwise we’d need to acknowledge that a serial harasser who repeatedly targets women by holding their sexual history over them might be kind of fucked up. If he’s supposed to just be a comedy character, which is pretty gross since his main joke is “you’re a giant slut”, then he’s a comedy character who isn’t funny.
Mike’s entire shtick is either harassing the disenfranchised or bluntly stating a plot point. I honestly can’t think of a reason he’s in the series beyond being a popular hold over from Willis’ other work.
Mike isn’t even a character in this setting he’s a plot device that gets pulled out whenever there isn’t an actual realistic source of conflict or impetus for character development which is why we haven’t seen much of him in a good long while.
Well, he’s also a walking “joke” but maybe we’ve finally reached the point where being an unrepentant awful human being isn’t actually viewed as funny it’s just gross.
i could say something about your mom and nickels, but i don’t necessarily disagree with anything that’s been said. even though i haven’t hated mike with much venom (i’m not sure why), i do think that this comment thread has brought up some excellent points. he certainly is a walking plot device and occasional random-content generator who is a popular carry-over from previous works. i think he’s most likable when he’s saying random mean stuff which can be ignored

Dina’s relationship with Becky may, in fact, be too adorable. I didn’t know that was physically possible, but it already seems to have surpassed a playful kitten and is well on its way to “sleepy puppy” levels.

I originally thought that Becky impulse-joined Joyce on her trip home out of a yearning to recapture some of those lost “happy days” of her past and feel like she’s part of a family again.
But now, after seeing Dina, I’m beginning to wonder if Becky might not have an ulterior motive for wanting to be alone with Joyce again, without any of her new friends around. Especially given her “internal screaming” panel a few days back.
Becky is probably also planning to recapture her personal documentation and any of her property that’s still at her dad’s house.
And of course, to support Joyce and spend time with the Browns, who she has known her entire life and who she gambles on will be more like their daughter than her father.
Just because it hurts sometimes doesn’t mean she’s going to try anything that stupid.
Sure, she’s still a bit hung up on Joyce and she still has that jealousy of Dorothy thing going, but none of that means she’s not also crazy about her dinosaur girl.
And the jealousy of Dorothy thing is as much “best-friend stealing” as anything else. Still one of Becky’s major flaws, if a very realistic one.

It wasn’t quite clear. They talked about it, but we didn’t see any actual conclusion. I think Joyce was still in the “No, you don’t have to come. My parents are going to be awful and I don’t want to put you through it” phase.
Which is why she was making “No, no” gestures at Becky a couple days back. And then Hank exceeded expectations and off they went.
Becky of course planned to go all along, unless Hank turned out to be really awful when he saw her, in which case I suspect she’d have tried to keep Joyce from going.

I like that Dina is that perceptive
It’s probably because Sarah isn’t the sort to actively seek her out and pester her with demands that she open up (Dorothy) but is unlikely to ignore her and hide behind her own social anxieties when something needs to be said (Amber).
I was thinking along similar lines, myself, Dina neither wants to be pressured or pressure someone else. Whereas Sarah just does what is right, albeit with poor grace, something Onfind very appealing in a character.
Also, Dina likes Sarah’s bluntness. Sarah always says exactly what she means, which is a real relief for a person who has difficulty with body language and invisible social cues.
The last significant interaction she had with Dorothy had her, Joyce and Sarah telling Becky how weird it is for Dina to be hit on.
Is Dina even good friends with Dorothy?
Before Becky, I can’t remember any situation where Dina and Dorothy interacted in a significant way, being in separate social circles. (Perhaps in the bathroom at the pizza place, but Dina was a definite 3rd wheel there.) The 2 of them do interact a bit more now, but its often in association with other people.
So maybe Dina just doesn’t know Dorothy well enough to confide in Dorothy.
Dina has paid close attention to her social circle and sought out Sarah, rather than Dorothy to talk to. I think that is based as much on her liking Sarah as it is Becky not liking Dorothy.
Sarah’s head: Oh Sh*t! Did I just care? Did anyone notice? Hm… Just Dina… Better cover it up quick before she does notice, just in case.

I misread the first word(s) of the first panel, and for an instant, I thought that this was a guest strip written by Frank Miller.
It just occurred to me that Becky may have just unknowingly foiled Mary’s evil scheme to hold her presence over Ruth by not being there for the weekend.
It seems like too nice a way for things to work out in the Dumbiverse, though.

I do not understand these comments. I even went back and binged a bit after seeing some older comics. And I was right: the vast majority of the comics are happy or funny or heartwarming or empowering, with just the occasional drop into a horrible funk.
IOW, this is a fairly positive comic. So why does everyone act like all Willis does is make tears?
My guess is that those occasional drops are such strong, hard gut-punches*, especially when contrasted with the otherwise fairly upbeat comic.
It reminds me that sometimes, the rare thing is what stands out. Apparently, when creators get either mostly positive or mostly negative feedback about something, they sort of get used to that… And then there’s that one message that is the complete opposite, and it breaks (or makes) the day for them, filling up their internal world. Our brains are weird.
*Especially because quite often, Willis is drawing upon his own experiences to make it seem much more real.
