Naw, people adopt the alt-right side because they’re stupid and humanphobic. Mike is keenly intelligent and just hates all of you fuckers, including me. He doesn’t do awful things because he’s an awful person; he does awful things because he deliberately and with malice aforethought wants to fuck with you. Which, yeah, is pretty awful, but it’s a very different kind of awful from the people are just stupid phobic fucks.
“I hate everyone equally” is something I trotted out when I was 13 and at my most edgelord.
Mike’s a shithead who calls women sluts for kissing boys, shamed a gay dude back into the closet, and told an abuse victim she was doomed to become her abuser. He is an awful person through and through.

He’s, in this very strip, trying to casually seduce the unsuspecting Ethan to make Danny jealous mad, and cause relationship drama. All awful things to do! But not exactly “alt-right” (that’s the proper way to write those words, btw) – he’s not aligned with any ideology except maximum human suffering. If supporting abortion and gay-rights and being nice to people was what would hurt his target the most – he’d do those things with equal committment – the difference is simply in how those actions “look”

Panel Three: Uh huuuuuuh. There are different gender studies teachers. So apparently Leslie’s name isn’t out there yet. That’s good for her. But yes, media circus and Robin’s credibility is likely shot. And Ethan and Mike are connecting it to Joyce’s class, which shows Ethan’s capacity for friendship and Mike’s capacity for remembering things about people he can use against them. As for Ethan, he’s definitely not overtly concerned – can’t possibly be the same one. (Yes, it can, everything in this story ties to them eventually).
Panel Four: Oh dear. So it won’t be long until they get a name for Leslie. And yeah, this is going to be a huge news day all around. Hopefully they end up okay. And by they I mean Leslie and her students. And Mike, no, you get out of Ethan’s face. Ethan’s a cinnamon roll who doesn’t deserve your evil schemes.
Panel Five: *snorts* Oh Daisy. Your hormones are driving you up the wall, aren’t they? And yeah, this story must be like candy to her. It’s everything she’s wanted – and a chance to bring down DeSanto? Oh my. Women liking women and the chance to take shots at the asshole making LGBT+ people’s situation worse? Yeah, this will occupy the IDS for, like, ever.
….Are we sure Daisy’s a student? I thought since she was senior editor she was a faculty member. If she’s faculty, can they go out? If not….sorry, Daisy. Maybe if things with Malaya and Marcie don’t work out? Sierra, maybe? There’s gotta be plenty of ladies who like ladies on campus.
…I try to avoid reductive, simplistic comments on characters. Particularly female characters, particularly LGBT characters, and especially when column A and column B mixes together.
I posit that Leslie’s name may actually BE in the article (the press knows where she lives, getting her name wouldn’t be hard), but Ethan simply doesn’t know the name of Joyce’s Gender Studies teacher.
Why ? That’s how I remembered most of my teachers when I still was a student: by what they taught and not by name. I knew some of their names because something made the teachers really stand out in a way or another, but that was it.
Daisy will be probably disapointed in the fact that the best she can ever hope is some fanfic. The paparazis will probably find a way to spin it thought.
I’m more than a little skeeved out that the reaction to this has been so tepid. It’s gross as fuck that there’s so much “lol this is so cute you go Mike” going on when his plan is take Ethan’s virginity and humiliate him when he’s on the cusp of finally normalizing his attraction to men.
Then again I saw the same when people were squeeing over Ruth forcing herself onto Billie so IDK what I’m supposed to expect anymore.
I don’t recall Mike planning on humiliating him. Causing lots of drama, yes. Seducing him, yes. But you know, Ethan has known Mike a lot longer than you or I. I suspect he’s not going to have any illusions about who Mike is.
But Danny is the actual target of the drama.
Ethan’s just barely come to accept his sexuality and still has fears that he’s doomed to be alone, fears that Mike has already exploited and is probably going to exploit again.
I don’t see how using Ethan as a prop to make someone else miserable makes him less of a complete piece of shit.
I think there’s a lot of “Yeah, it’s Mike being an ass again.” There was a good deal of reaction when Mike first laid out the plan. Now we’re just waiting to see the fallout.

Out of curiosity, is Lesbians being desperate to comedic lengths a trope? No real fault to this comic, which itself features many others. It just seems kind of a familiar bit – but I can’t quite place where it’s come up.
Pretty much yeah. The joke is that they’re lesbians and obsessed with sex because wanting to bang someone of the same gender is gross and weird and therefore prime material for comedy.
Daisy is a cardboard cutout with the word ‘lesbian’ written in crayon, but she’s surrounded by complex and interesting queer women, so she becomes a lighthearted fun character rather than a dumb gag, the way she would if she were the only queer lady in the cast.
I’d imagine it also helps that she generally seems competent when not discussing wlw or pretty girls. She functions as Billie and Dorothy’s boss and so she has a role outside just ‘lolz lesbians are horny’. It’s just that because we rarely see her, her horniness sticks out more.
I too enjoy the story about a serial harasser preying on an unknowing victim that he drove back into the closet, grooming him for sex for the sole purpose of revealing he doesn’t actually care about him and was just out to make him and a friend miserable for shits and giggles.
You’ve said Tailgate is Dina, but I think he’s closer to Joyce. Being stuck underground for 5 million years IS kinda like being home schooled. And Ethan caught her up to speed on what she missed in pop culture, which is kind of like Ultra Magnus making you learn the longform of the Autobot Code.
You know, ultimately I feel sort of sorry for Mike.
Later, I’ll feel sorry for Ethan, if this works and has half the splash damage Mike seemed to want out of it. And certainly my feeling sorry for Mike right now is not because I somehow think he’s not a bastard.
But there’s just something about the way that Mike keeps attacking anyone who tries to be his friend. Like, there’s just no interpretation of his character in this situation that isn’t profoundly sad to me.
I’m not saying anyone needs to feel bad for Mike. I’m not saying that, even should it turn out that all of this is motivated by desperate loneliness, it will somehow be okay, or make him less of a terrible friend.

As for Ethan, he’s definitely not overtly concerned – can’t possibly be the same one. (Yes, it can, everything in this story ties to them eventually).

Why ? That’s how I remembered most of my teachers when I still was a student: by what they taught and not by name. I knew some of their names because something made the teachers really stand out in a way or another, but that was it.

I don’t recall Mike planning on humiliating him. Causing lots of drama, yes. Seducing him, yes. But you know, Ethan has known Mike a lot longer than you or I. I suspect he’s not going to have any illusions about who Mike is.
But Danny is the actual target of the drama.
Ethan’s just barely come to accept his sexuality and still has fears that he’s doomed to be alone, fears that Mike has already exploited and is probably going to exploit again.
I don’t see how using Ethan as a prop to make someone else miserable makes him less of a complete piece of shit.
I think there’s a lot of “Yeah, it’s Mike being an ass again.” There was a good deal of reaction when Mike first laid out the plan. Now we’re just waiting to see the fallout.

Out of curiosity, is Lesbians being desperate to comedic lengths a trope? No real fault to this comic, which itself features many others. It just seems kind of a familiar bit – but I can’t quite place where it’s come up.
Pretty much yeah. The joke is that they’re lesbians and obsessed with sex because wanting to bang someone of the same gender is gross and weird and therefore prime material for comedy.
Daisy is a cardboard cutout with the word ‘lesbian’ written in crayon, but she’s surrounded by complex and interesting queer women, so she becomes a lighthearted fun character rather than a dumb gag, the way she would if she were the only queer lady in the cast.
I’d imagine it also helps that she generally seems competent when not discussing wlw or pretty girls. She functions as Billie and Dorothy’s boss and so she has a role outside just ‘lolz lesbians are horny’. It’s just that because we rarely see her, her horniness sticks out more.
Daisy was pretty hardcore in It’s Walky! now that I think about. Unloaded a magazine into Beef and turned his face into hamburger meat.

You know, ultimately I feel sort of sorry for Mike.
Later, I’ll feel sorry for Ethan, if this works and has half the splash damage Mike seemed to want out of it. And certainly my feeling sorry for Mike right now is not because I somehow think he’s not a bastard.
But there’s just something about the way that Mike keeps attacking anyone who tries to be his friend. Like, there’s just no interpretation of his character in this situation that isn’t profoundly sad to me.
I’m not saying anyone needs to feel bad for Mike. I’m not saying that, even should it turn out that all of this is motivated by desperate loneliness, it will somehow be okay, or make him less of a terrible friend.
This is much more in the vein of, if you keep driving your friends away, you eventually end up miserable and alone. Which is sad, even if it’s also sadness you completely deserve.
This universe only has, like, 12 people in it. Everything they do is somehow inextricably intertwined with everybody else.
Once they start realizing that, they’ll all start to slowly go insane.
