And the Dean makes all points moot… but Roz can sitll shoot as many videos as she wants from off-campus locations.
So how long before she and Joe bang in Galssso’s?
Aw! Can’t unthink that now! >_<
“What is this thing you are doing? Galssso does not understand!”
Kind of like how Mom says “I don’t want you doing that”, but Dad says “don’t let me catch you doing that again”. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt you.
Sort of, except this sounds a lot more like “Don’t let me catch you doing it again. By the way, I won’t look behind the woodshed.”
That, and my school had a “Don’t drink” policy, with the Dean phrasing it as: “Don’t drink on campus. Now, we can’t govern you off-campus, but we all know you’ll be responsible.”
“Know whadimean, say no more, say no more.”
A nod’s as good as a wink to a blind bloke.
Ours is a bit like that. They’re all like “It’s a dry campus, but we know what happens anyway. Just don’t be too blatant about it.”
Gotta love Indiana.
Well, he does have a point.
Basically no filming of PREMARTIAL HANKY PANKY.
Britney Spears-style wedding time?
PREMARTIAL HANKY PANKY sounds like what the Spartans do before they dine in hell.
Or any hanky-panky, really. Porn is porn D:
None of the 600 comments thought of the legal issues the school could raise.
Well played Mister Willis, well played.
Yeah, I have no idea how I managed that.
Clearly, we’re all just really, really dumb.
Because it’s not as clear-cut as the Dean makes it seem. Whether or not he can object depends on the contract Roz has with the school and the dorm, as well as what’s in the student handbook. There is probably a line about “damaging the reputation of the school”, but how it’s worded will make a LOT of difference.
A simple line about photography or the use of images and likenesses might be enough.
If the school has been in operation long enough, the contract will almost certainly have a line specifically pertaining to pornographic/erotic video/picture shoots while on campus. Some might even have rules against sexual congress taking place at ALL in a dormitory room.
School rules can get damn specific. I had a friend who’s High School handbook specifically called out the sexual molestation of waterfoul as being a violation.
Those poor ducks.
That sounds unprofessionally done. Poorly phrased.
I mean we gotta set up a specific law for waterfowls? They couldn’t just take care of all fowls at once? Perhaps just a general rule against sexual congress with non-human entities?
I mean if we’re doing things like that then we’ve gotta set a rule for waterfowl and then set up a new rule entirely when someone goes and molests a peregrine falcon.
Makes me wonder what the guys in charge were up to behind the scenes that they needed the law to be that specific.
No, they obviously were alright with all other forms animal molestation.
I see what you did there. Bravo sir or miss.
I would pay money to see someone try to molest a Peregrine falcon. Man, have you seen the claws and beak on those things? Appendiges would be seriously damaged, amputated even.
……I really want to know what could have made them put that in specifically, but at the same time, I don’t want to know.
Law is kind of like that in general. Consider for a moment that some poor politician at some point must have been faced with some manner of crisis to which his response was the illegalization of necrophilia.
For every law that exists there was a point when a council gathered and said “Ok guys. This has to stop.”
Necrophilia? That’s only a 500 gold fine in Cyrodil.
Seriously, some of those laws get hilarious when you think about why they had to be created. For instance, why is it illegal to throw a stone at a bird unless it’s retaliatory in Indianapolis? No stone-throwing at birds I can understand, but do the birds start it often enough you need the second part?
I can just imagine the poor guy who got arrested for throwing a rock at the eagle that ate his son.
Only if it’s a first offense, right?
Note that the fine is higher in Morrowind; learn the rules before you travel!
Also keep in mind that the technical definition of the word “molest” is to physically disturb. Maybe the campus is located in a place where waterfowl are a protected species similar to bald eagles and in some places, seagulls. Basically, in old lingo, they could just be asking you not to disturb the ducks.
Old lingo or not, I believe the key word aside from the ‘victim’ in “sexual molestation of waterfoul” would be sexual…. Which causes me to wonder, what IF it was just about disturbing the ducks & the school just happened to have a problem with students mushroom slapping the poor things.
Cock-fighting a duck?
Considering how ducks tend to react to things pretty aggressively, it’s also pretty likely that they did it to try and protect the students. Like saying “Okay, I know this is going to sound weird, but please, keep them trouser-snakes caged when it comes to the ducks, huh? Everyone heard about what happened to Billy Thudpuckett last week, and the doctors are telling me he can never play with the magic fireman properly again. So I don’t care how drunk you get, no tea-bagging them waterfowl!” [/all said in a Kennedy accent]
I can’t fucking breath, my sides ache, and my face is probably turning red or blue by now. Bravo good sirs and madams.
My county is kinda terrible at being specific on headphones in school. By terrible, I mean there are so many loopholes, it’s swiss cheese to me. I think every student who has used headphones in my high school (including me) has said “It doesn’t say anything about using headphones in the hallway” at least once. Yes, I actually read through the technology section of the Student Code of Conduct; I don’t think it makes me a nerd…. I just like looking for loopholes.
But still, headphone usage in the cafeteria, outside, the gym (although it might count as a classroom), and the halls aren’t explicitly pointed out in the SCoC. Crap, it’s not really forbidden in classrooms! Just have to ask the teacher and even I think you don’t need to if you have proof of the completion of your work.
Bad news for you.
Reading through the technology section doesn’t make you a nerd. Looking for loopholes with no other purpose does though. It’s ok, you are not alone. I can’t say that you’re in good company, but company none the less.
I am majoring in wildlife biology. I have had to molest ducks for class credit. I can understand completely why most places would have a specific rule against this.
Light a match and see what happens, fuck a duck and see what hatches!
I temped for a law firm when I was younger and unless memory fails me, it actually doesn’t matter what contract she signed. It’s a zoning thing. Educational housing is on state land which isn’t zoned for private business or private enterprise or advertisement without a license or such in any state I know of. In fact, from what I remember, even shooting off campus would still leave her in the same position, with the Dean that is, unless she registered a business name, license, and address off campus.
None of the 600+ commenst thought that there were any rules pertaining to local of the deed.
Rules or not the Dean has a valid reason to be displeased by this and none of us thought of it.
Personally I didn’t even stop to consider it WAS filmed on campus. I dunno why I’d think otherwise but there you go.
It was hiding in plain sight, like Snake-Eyes with novelty fake-nose-and-tache glasses!
Next comic: pr0n LIVE FROM BEHIND THE INGLES
(Ingles still exists, doesn’t it?)
Dean just becaome my favorite character.
with his penis?
No, but it could cost Roz her femurs.
Holy crap, is that…no, no, can’t say it. Don’t want to confuse anyone.
In any case, yeah. He makes a very good point. Never mind the money that renting out dorm rooms as sets might bring in…
I kid, I kid.
Dean Big Boss… Is that you? I think that’s you…. mmmmhmmm….
Super effective, etc.
DEAN USES CAMPUS BILAWS!
“Bilaws”? Sounds like what you’d get if your in-laws were bisexual.
I assume you meant “bylaws”. ;-P
Yes. Thank you.
But it took place in JOE’s room, not hers! (with Danny as unwitting accomplice since the camera was taped to his foot)
She was still the one behind it. Wouldn’t have gotten filmed if she hadn’t suggested it. Therefore, her responsibility. Not Joe’s.
I’m sure Joe will get a talking to as well.
So everyone understands the ONLY reason she has not been thrown out of school was due to the fact she is the senator’s sister.
Odd sort of Catch 22, but Catch 22 none the less.
Robin is a Congresswoman, in the House of Representatives, not a Senator.
I’m reminded that there was something like this at IU in the past several years, minus the political connections. Playboy did a “Girls of the Big Ten” shoot or some such, administration got upset, I don’t remember any more details.
It was 2001-2004 because those were the years I was living in Ashton and the photo shoot happened in Teeter (tee-hee-hee) which was next door. That was a commercial interest producing porn on the campus. This scenario is a privately created sex tape with no commercial value to the people who are under the uni’s thumb, so I don’t see anything they could do to Roz that wouldn’t get them sued and her her tuition back.
I’ve always loved a good dose of reality upside the head. (Except when I’m the one being hit with it.)
I wonder if this will get the Ruth in trouble (somehow) since she is (?) the resident assistant for that floor.
Also: yay for Leslie being non-biased.
Ruth is the RA for the girl’s half of the floor. Joe has his own RA.
Do we get to meet him?
Probably eventually. I don’t currently have any plans.
I suggest Howard.
My bet’s on Unnamed Trekkie RA from Roomies.
It’s totally gonna be Omnios.
haha, cue storyline of Ethan banging the RA
You know, my avatar for this comic has changed a lot, yet every time there’s a reshuffle, and even when I get a new IP, I’m still Hot Shot on the Shortpacked comments. Weird.
Faz as RA would fit, really.
Seconded. (Or does this make it “thirded”?)
That sounds about right.
To many sexual harrassment lawsuits.
The old dude or the silent youngster? OR BOTH!
Preferably the, uh, old dude.
(Fifty isn’t really old, though.)
Buckets of Blood Guy!
i don’t think leslie has anything to by biased towards
What about the vetos she wishes to enact onto Robin’s legislation?
With her penis?
…I don’t think she has one of those.
Everybody is biased. The question is which way they lean.
Probably not. She might get talked to about the situation (mostly so the school can cover it’s bases), but I don’t think she’d get in trouble, because of the fact that the school isn’t going to expect her to be able to monitor the students’ sexual activities and the hallways 24/7. After all, she has to sleep as well and she has her own classes to attend. The RA’s primarily work as The only way she’d get in trouble was if she was aware that the porn was being made and either didn’t stop it or was involved in it somehow.
It seems so obvious yet in 500+ comments wasn’t mentioned by anyone including myself, probably the only point that really can’t be argued by anyone, including Roz! Well played Willis.
Of course we didn’t raise this. We were all debating whether this was right or wrong, not what could go wrong. Also, someone did talk about the issues inherent in making porn. Not sure if they mentioned the locale.
Missed that one, and it’s true the right/wrong debate can still go on and on, but no matter what there are still consequences.
I think someone mentioned damage to the school’s image, but nobody mentioned the school having actual legal ways of making Roz stay in line.
Dean: “I have authority. Your argument is invalid”
Dean uses AUTHORITY. It’s super effective! Roz fainted!
Well played, Big Bo- I mean Dean McHenry.
And then the Dean makes a rude gesture while screaming: “AWWW, YEAH! IN YO’ FACE!”
See my school had a behind closed doors policy. If it got out past the doors you could be suspended no questions.
The Dean is officially my new favorite character.
At this point, let us all sing the anthem of all good college comedies, “Louie, Louie.”
Does this mean that this is only the first or second time someone has ever used the campus as a webcam porn site?
If it’s a campus that’s been around for a while, it probably isn’t the first time.
It only needs to be the first time since the internet became an effective distribution channel. The age of the campus doesn’t really matter in that case, since most previous videos certainly had a limited audience.
The only reason the school might be worried IS because it is Roz, if it was just two other students unrelated to anyone important, I doubt the dean would care anywhere near as much.
On the other hand, Roz being related to the congresswoman probably contributed to the popularity of the video.
Billie is kinda well-known :\ ….. Other than that, what he is trying to do is just save face….. so actually, you bring up a good point: does the dean care more about the well-being of his students or the moral-uprightedness of his school’s reputation?
School’s rep. Any smart dean would know not to give a damn about student morals (since trying to define morals leads to a 600-comment discussion) and focus on the school as a whole. As long as it ain’t illegal or damaging to the school, why should he care?
I wish I could cut through other people’s nonsense that effortlessly.
It helps a great deal that he has some power over Roz in that regards.
I’m sure the Dean still wouldn’t want to hear about it and would find himself addressing issue if it did work its’ way over to him.
But yeah. There’s a congressional representative at his school. Of course he’s not pleased. Not like that’s a sex thing specifically. If there’s bullying at the school that’s one thing. If congresswoman desanto comes to speak on the issue of the highly publicized bullying event that occurred at his school recently well now he’s got some shit to take care of. Gonna take care of that one personally. Make sure it gets done right.
Balding suit-man powers go!!!!!!!
Unfortunately, this sort of issue can go even further. I don’t recall the details myself since it’s been a long time since then and I didn’t much care about the story, but back in college for me some students got in trouble for going to an off-campus Halloween party, dressing up in stereotypical African tribalwear and putting on blackface, then subsequently putting the pictures up on Facebook.
Clearly, they were not the brightest bulbs, but if I recall correctly the students got into A LOT of trouble with the college administration over it, despite it taking place off-campus.
Very true Linkara. If the school feels that the actions of their students could paint the school in a negative life, the’re not gong to be very happy with it. I remember at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 2008, two college guys who were on the wrestling team did a video for gay porn site. Despite the fact the video was not done on college grounds, and the guys used “stage names”, and didn’t make any mention of their school in the video or site, they got in big trouble with the school for appearing in the video. I’m not sure if they got expelled, but they were the school did bust them.
Quick recap. The shirt is in no way associated with the school. It has never been worn anywhere near schoolgrounds. The party which the shirt was made for is not a school sanctioned event, nor was it ever likely to adhere to the rules of the school in the first place. The students themselves are mere days away from not being associated with the school anymore.
I see your point about the shirts. But at the same time, it was a Catholic school, not a public school. Catholic schools are expected to promote conservative values and renounce what their church deems sinful behavior. Parents pay a lot of money for private school tuition, and they expect a certain amount of discipline, regardless of whether the students have reached 18 or not.
“Parents pay a lot of money for private school tuition”
Is that how it works in other places. Free over here. Comes out of our taxes the same as public schools. Not everyone’s happy about it but it’s one of those stupid things that was worked out back when it made sense and would be more trouble than it’s worth for the government to abolish.
And I’m aware they answer to the Catholic School Board instead of the Public School Board. They have their own policies that do not match the public schools.
And yet this was a news item. Right in there on the 6 O’clock. It’s not that this is typical for them because they’re a catholic school. They go a bit further than the public schools in enforcing their code of conduct but this is still pretty far beyond anything that would normally be expected.
Hell, if we’re getting technical it’s a highschool rather than a college, which also puts it on a separate set of policies, and it’s a school in Ontario rather than Indiana, which once again would be another manner in which it could be expected to operate under separate policies.
I do maintain that it’s a relevant news item to what’s being discussed. Depending on your school it can indeed go farther than what happens on Campus. It all depends on who’s in charge.
Where is “over here”? If it’s the US, I’m surprised. I was under the impression that no private school received federal funding, as many/most have a religious background.
Canada, though evidently this isn’t actually true in every province. Never knew that. Then again I never knew they were privatized at all elsewhere before now so I suppose that makes sense.
Gangler, I don’t know about Ontario, but in B.C. our private schools are private schools BECAUSE they cost money to go to. I think they may receive some federal funding, but not enough for them not to want way more by charging familys huge prices (Given, the familys usually are loaded)
It’s a catholic school, not a private school.
Private schools still cost money. Catholic schools aren’t those. At least not over here.
You could have both I’m pretty sure. If the Catholic school didn’t want to be on the Catholic School board then they’d have to privatize.
And yeah, private schools anything goes really. They basically make their own rules and decide how they’re enforced.
The school in question is on the Catholic School board. Anyone can go. It’s just a Catholic School with catholic classes and mass that will work to instill catholic values into its’ students. Generally not a whole lot of motivation to go to a Catholic school if you’re not catholic, but some people do.
Sometimes parents just want their children to be somewhere wholesome without all the drugs and sexuality that a normal school would have (truly misguided. It’s all still there). Some parents might want to make use of some of the school’s facilities. Etc etc. People have their reasons.
You get the drift. They’re not privatized. Tax dollars the same as our public schools.
A wikipedia article detailing the situation a little better than I can.
There is nothing to stop them AFTER the prom.
So the school DOES have an administration! I was really starting to wonder about this place!
A sign of a good administration is that you never see them. A sign of a bad administration is also that you never see them.
so which is this?
Probly not a good one.
man is there a universe where he is not in charge of some organisation XD
Yes. This one.
Are you so sure about that?
Agreed, I’ve seen several men in authoritative positions who match his description.
he runs our local cop shop
I can’t believe I didn’t really think about this beforehand either. But yeah, schools have cracked down hard on sex stuff, like that cheerleader who posed for playboy last year.
To be honest, I’m surprised she’s just getting off with a warning.
Dean’s pretty lenient. Every dorm I’ve ever lived in would just be like, “You’re outta here, nice knowin’ ya.”
yes but this student happens to be the younger sister of the congressional representative for the district that the school is in. There in lies the difference.
WOO! Big Boss!
Aaaaaand Big Boss steps in and explains the situation in a way that eve Roz can’t circumvent.
Thank you, Big Boss. Way to cut through the bullshit to what really matters.
Wait, what? Was that a quote or something?
Oh goodness yes.
If it was a quote, I had no idea. Somebody suggested that it was from Rent? If so, that was not my intent. I have never seen Rent and kinda hate musicals in general. Just my opinion; you can like them if you want.
I rather like musicals in general, but give Rent a pass. I liked it at first, but now I only see/hear “We have AIDS! Yay!”
I thought Crimson Magic was just saying that rent is what really matters. I always come out in support of the importance of paying one’s rent.
Since the dean pretty effectively just threatened to evict Roz if she doesn’t adhere to the rules of her living space it seemed like an applicable concept.
It’s not a quote, as far as I know. I was just shipping in my two cents about rent being the only thing that matters. A fair bit of hyperbole, but as a college student it’s pretty high up there for me.
Oh good, I guess…
So does this end this little storyline?
We will just have to wait and see.
Note that he didn’t say that the porn itself was a problem. ONLY that the school didn’t want to be ADVERTISED as a site for porn…
What that says to me is “If only a handful of people see it, fine. If millions see it, get out.”
of course, if one of those handful happened to be in the administration or one of the big bankrollers……lol
Nice use of obfuscate, Dean McHenry. Way to earn your deanship.
His doctoral thesis was entitled “All these words should be used more”
It gave a long list of words, detailed their virtues, quantified the ways in which and the degree to which one could benefit through the use of these words, extrapolated from this the frequency of use that would be optimal, and finally through the use of mass wiretappings displayed irrefutably that the frequency of use was far below the optimum previously put forth.
Dean McHenry has a major grudge with the Ethics Committee to this day. He really would have loved to be Professor McHenry.
I think I love what you just said.
I think David Willis took that class, too, as he has been using uncommon english words lately in DoA. I had to look up ‘Apropos’, and ‘Obfuscate’ is a word you will -never- hear in a regular conversation. Unless of course it’s used in one of the following:
1. An intellectually superior level
2. A political argument meant to prove the other’s inferiority, by using words that might be over the other’s head.
3. The same as 2 among peers in school (usually among the nerdier/dorkier groups *raises his hand* which I am apart of)
4. In a thesis.
5. In a dictionary.
6. In the best game of Scrabble ever.
Really? Apropos and obfuscate don’t strike me as odd in any way, aside from length.
I find them to be a bit uncommong in today’s regular conversations. Then again, three syllables tend to be too much for alot of people, so it’s more than likely the community’s fault rather than the person.
PREDICTION: Joe will speak up that it was his room, not hers.
OR: Roz will tell the dean that it was Joe’s room. Somehow, Danny will be blamed
“You were holding the camera! Expulsion!”
The final story would read “One Danny ‘Danno’ Wilcox was found to be making these sex tapes as an entrepreneurial venture without the knowledge or consent of his sexually active roommate or the sexual partners that his roommate would bring in. He has been dealt with and we maintain that both Joe Rosenthal and Roz Desanto are only victims in all this. They’ve both been advised to exercise more caution in the future had the rules regarding on campus sexual conduct explained to them. First week of school. Hadn’t gotten around to reading that planner yet. It’s an understandable mistake”
Roz gets a story that doesn’t paint her sexual activity as sinful. Just against the rules. Joe gets sympathy bangs in addition to what the video was already getting him. Danny ends up being quite successful in the industry after some talent scouts liked his work and gave him a gig. Later cedes to Joe that this was the best act of Wingmanship ever. Robin greatly impresses the voters with her reaction to her victimized sister and secures her position for many years to come.
All in all it actually works out quite well for everyone. Scapegoats ftw.
I doubt that will make any difference, it was the fact that it was filmed ON CAMPASS that is the issue with the Dean.
I love that the dean cut through EVERYONE’S bullshit all at once, including Robin’s. Obfuscate implies a deliberate attempt to confuse the issue, not an unintentional one, and the Congresswoman has clearly made this about pleasing her voters more than anything else (as if her voters don’t watch porn). Way to go, Dean!
The Dean, on the other hand, has clearly made this about pleasing the Board of Trustees, the College President, the parents of students and prospective students…
Which isn’t to dismiss his point as invalid; of everyone here, he’s the one with the authority on campus, so he can make statements like this. I’m merely pointing out that Roz’s is pretty much the only uncynical voice in the argument.
And the politician needs someone else to say the intelligent argument. I’m really not surprised. I don’t know if it would make a difference if Joe points out whose dorm the video was taped in; although we all know that he as the proven inability to keep his mouth shut.
Why are so many comments arguing morality still? Pretty sure the Dean character made the point that morals don’t have anything to do with the University’s policies. Also pretty sure that the whole matter falls under the category of “Crap We Do Not Care to Deal With” as far as he and his mountains of daily paperwork are concerned.
My experience with university staff members are that they generally do not care what the students do so long as 1) The acts are not illegal, 2) The acts do not facilitate harm, and 3) The acts do not tarnish the reputation of the school itself. Essentially, the moment that you start wasting their time by causing people to call them up/go into their offices and chew them out over something YOU did, that’s when they care, are very grumpy, and very much likely to screw you over. Pun intended.
The new poll should add the Dean as a third option. Roz got Deaned, Joe-style.
I agree. What has Robin said that she could even be more or less wrong about? She isn’t making an argument, she’s doing political damage control.
Wow, that was pretty boss.
I love how objectively you handle your issues.
Is he looking at her boobs?Y’know maybe I don’t feel bad about Walky accidentally killing him in It’s Walky
