    Becky: I want a Winnebago.
    Robin: What?!
Becky: Fully equipped. Big kitchen, water bed, AM/FM CD, microwave.
Robin: It’s not a car dealership, pal!
    Dina: She wants a Winnebago.
    Robin: All right. A Winnebago.
    Becky: Thank you. Burgundy interior.

Galasso: Ah, I have never taken my wife to Europe.
Robin: I’m sorry to hear it. Give me the Tweets.
Galasso: You will buy me two round-trip, first-class tickets to Athens, Lisbon, Madrid, and Scotland.
    Pamela: Don’t forget Tahiti.
    Galasso: And Tahiti.
Robin: Tahiti is not in Europe!
Conquest: Excuse me. When you get re-elected, you give us geography lessons. Until then, this man goes to Tahiti.
    Robin: Fine! Tahiti!

Joe: The young lady with the Uzi… She single?
Danny: Y’know, Joe, excuse us. This is the brass ring. Now you’ve got to think bigger thoughts.
Joe: I just want her telephone number.
Becky: How about a lunch? You can chaperone.
Robin: No. I will not do this.
Becky: Hey, Robs, Robs. Come on, the FBI would give him twins.
    Robin: NO!!
Malaya: Wait a second. You can have anything you want, and you’re asking for my phone number?
    Joe: Yes.
Malaya: [smiles] 273-9164, area code 415.
    Joe: I’m Joe.
    Malaya: I’m Malaya.
Robin: I’m going to be sick.

Jacob: I want peace on Earth and good will toward men.
    Robin: Oh, this is ridiculous.
    Dina: No, he’s serious.
Jacob: I want peace on Earth and good will toward men.
Robin: We are the United States government! We don’t do that sort of thing.
Dina: You’ll just have to try.
Robin: All right. I’ll see what we can do.
Jacob: Thank you. It’s all I ask.

    Robin: What about you?
    Joyce: Oh, I’m fine. =D

In this universe Robin legislates world peace not through the use of cereal, but simply to get Becky in her employ.

Interesting tidbit: The technical consultant for ‘Sneakers’ was the same one who did Wargames. He was the real deal and helped BUILD a lot of NORAD’S security and is the reason those two movies got so much of the hacking stuff right.

        And that’s a real concern

And frankly, I suspect, something of a sneaky plan of Robin’s.

By having Becky work as her campaign manager, and Becky still hanging out with Leslie, Robin will have a kinda legitime reason to “Bump in to” Leslie again.

        It will be painful

Hear me out, I know it seems superficially wrong, but I feel as though she should not choose campaign honesty. If she gets elected with the young liberal vote and betrays them, she’d be shooting herself on the foot and basically guaranteeing being disgraced on the eyes of both parties afterwards. On the other hand, her being elected would also prove that the young liberal vote is worth seeking, meaning true liberal candidates will benefit afterwards.

And all that without mentioning that Robin may end doing the right, smart thing, anyway (if only out of self-gain, but who knows, she may actually learn and grow) and thus, Becky would have cheated herself of either tuition or a place to live.

        April 14, 2019 at 12:48 pm | #

No. Robin shooting herself in the foot isn’t worth the harm she’s going to cause to immigrants, afab people, or LGBT+ people.

That’s just not true. Politicians have a tendency to go back to the party line when they’re elected to a specific party – and it’s too late for Robin to drop the letter beside her name just because the party cancelled its endorsement. Robin betraying what she campaigned on would ensure she’s not elected with the liberal crowd again but a) That doesn’t ensure she won’t get her old Evil Bastard crowd back and b) Her losing that kind of support isn’t worth the damage said betrayal would do to LGBT+ people, immigrants, and AFAB people.

Probably won’t apply then. I believe the reason is that some 18 year old kids have no idea at all how to live independently, how to cook, how to budget, etc. So the school requires them to live in a dorm with a meal plan for the first year to avoid problems with clueless kids starving, etc.

The catch-all term for later-in-life learners is “non-traditional students”.  Most universities realize that most people over 25 (the general cut-off point at which you become a “non-trad”) already have a life, possibly a spouse, and a place to live and are not that heartless that they would force someone to uproot all that just to satisfy some chicken-shit rule about how “all first-year students must live in on-campus housing and sign up for the meal plan”.

There’s a waiver you can fill out

Usually it just says “I’m living with my parents/aunt/grandparents” but if you’re already an established adult you can get an override, too

Partly it’s as Slartibeast said, that kids don’t know what they’re doing. I was in a mixed year dorm one time and my roommate didn’t turn 18 until the end of her first year of college.

However, living on campus also helps to strengthen your bond with classmates and makes certain mishaps less likely. Many students don’t have a car, so being able to walk to class helps remove a barrier to attendance, as well as using the library or attending tutoring. This also gives students the opportunity to be independent in a way that their parents might not let them (mine still gave me a bed time at 18- not curfew, BEDTIME) while still providing a degree of supervision not found in regular apartment living. Also, I would rather live with an annoying classmate than the asshole I found on Craigslist

I worked a summer cleaning dorms for a Southern Baptist College. The first day I ate lunch with some of the other workers. One of the girls was complaining about needing to try to convert 10 people (or some other random number) but her parents forbid her from leaving the campus so she couldn’t do it. She was 18. (And I wisely kept my mouth shut, ‘cuz I’m not a Southern Baptist.)

Actually, I don’t think I’ve seen Robin actually lie or break a promise yet. Yeah, she is self-interested and has crappy policies, but she does seem to be pretty honest. This might be a moral point with her, though I might lean more toward her just being naive (she really does act like a child) and keeps her word because she never actually considers the idea that she could just break her promise.

I never said Robin for sure would betray Becky (though if it got her more votes – and it likely would with the GOP, I could see it. I don’t trust this Robin). I said if Robin WERE to betray Robin, I’m not sure what Becky could actually do about it. Which is why it’s a very good thing Robin’s so incompetent.

In theory, it’s the best two to pick.

In practice, Robin can’t be trusted. So only the “place to live” item has any sure value. Of the other two, “don’t betray us” is the more likely to get tossed aside, so Becky should go with the home and tuition.

How does Becky expect Robin to pull off being a RINO in Indiana of all places? Even if the magic R can save her this time around, her record from this past term is set in stone, liberals won’t trust her this time around, and she’ll almost certainly get primaried when the next election cycle comes around.

There is a small chance that Robin will win or even if she does not win this election how Becky chooses now might will effect whose side she is on going forward when she recovers and still has influence.
But lets look at it from another angle, right now Becky is getting a place to live from Leslie. She is also dependent on Leslie for food and basic hygeane supplies, and Becky is dependent on her friends for luxuries like cloaths, phones and going out. Right now the cash value of there good graces which choosing to sell out good people would risk might be greater than a couple months of housing. And feeling like a bum is not a good feeling but neither is knowingly working to make the world worse.

Robin can’t make too much of an about-face; remember when she pointed out that what will appeal to the liberal university crowd won’t necessary play further downstate in redneckland.  Anybody think that if Robin gets re-elected, all deals — especially the one about “walking the walk” — are probably off the table?

If re-elected, Robin will have to toe the party line, at least the majority of the time, or it will be the *PARTY* that throws *HER* under the bus.  And what would Becky be able to do about it then?  Sure she could go public, but I predict the masses would believe a seated congresscritter before they’d believe some 18- or 19-year-old kid.

If Robin can only win by campaigning on Becky’s social and economic platform, then that’s likely to continue to hold true after the election. The party’s already thrown her under the bus. The whole premise here is the about face is supposedly the only thing that can save her political career.
I’m not sure I actually buy that. It doesn’t match my understanding of politics. It may be that Robin’s just delusional about her chances.

Maybe if her opponent is the kind of very conservative Republican-lite Democrat that often runs in red districts, then she could actually peel of votes to his left while the Republican base voters sit this one out?

I’m so incredibly in love with Panel 3 so much I want to gush about it. Like, the sheer push, the emotion, the way the theoretical camera pushes in from Panel 2, so she dominates the frame?

It’s such a beautiful composition, especially building on Panel 2, her face set and determined, her eyes almost seeming to bore through, as if ready to inflict a moral damage on their perceiver.

It is the queer rage of the betrayed. Those who have trusted and been broken. Who have seen the promises of the love of community and family disappear in an instance when their reality threatens the ideology. Those who have seen the pain before and will not be subjected to it again and as we see in Panels 4-6, Robin is caught almost completely unaware and unprepared for it.

Like, sure, she got a small taste of the filtered, controlled, and watered-down version from Leslie. The version with the benefit of years of recovery, which can be sanitized for a presuming straight audience, which seeks to edify and invite.

But Becky’s version is fresh, almost venomous, it is raw with fresh wounds and almost invites a different visual response. The response of seeing the blood still running from the harm caused and an unsettling impression carried by that rawness.

It’s a power derived from pain, very rarely harnessed so effectively and yet, she employs it, not out of any means of deception but out of pure honesty and raw emotion and that can cut through the usual dance people are used to. Especially bigots and you see how well it lands in those two panels of silence.

It’s a capturing of something real and powerful in a powerful artistic way and that’s just amazing enough to gush over. At least for my nerdy ass.

Hmm, I don’t know, though. I don’t see either as being very Goofus-like. Mary complained about not being paid and agreed to perform work that she personally enjoys for a low fee (a couple pretzels) because she doesn’t actually need money, and just doesn’t want to be taken advantage of. Becky is being offered a position that she has more of a strong bargaining position for and has a much greater need for financial support, so is haggling. Both of these are pretty valid compensation strategies for their individual situations.

So… Becky… You are going to make damned sure you have this in writing, multiple copies signed, witnessed and notarized, before actually acting on it, right? The clause about her voting record going forward will be absolutely unenforceable in any legal sense (and may even be enough to get her removed from office should she actually win) but forcing her to pull the strings to get you into school or getting an equivalent monetary compensation (plus yer legal fees for pursuing it) if she fails to bother trying should be.

At the same time, there would be a fair argument for the fact that she is employing Becky to post these specific messages and could be seen as lying in her campaign to get elected. More than most politicians do, at any rate. It’s one thing to make promises that you can’t keep or exaggerating what you intend to accomplish, it’s quire another to say that you support a more liberal agenda while always voting on the conservative side.

I like DeSanto’s response. It shows that she can provide Becky with a place to stay and trust with her voting policies, but to do so she would have to not take any money from corporate lobbyists and financial backing from the private sector. She could be corrupt and pay for Becky’s school and a lot of whatever else including board , or she can become an ally and likely have a place for Becky to stay but not enough money to send her to school (college be expensive yo!).

So, uh, yeah, rah rah go Becky, but let’s look at the “Pick One To Abandon” conundrum:

She picks College to give up? That’s the dream she’s wanted, and it’d disappoint Dina.

She picks a place to live to give up? She’d continue to impose on Leslie.

She lets Robin screw over LGBTQ? She’d be hurting Dina, Leslie and herself.

No matter which she chooses, someone that she cares about isn’t going to like it.

…I’d say pick “a place to live” and “no fucking over LBGTQ” as the thing to keep, btw. College is EXPENSIVE and not a guarantee of a successful career, and this might be Becky’s wheelhouse.

Apologies if this is in the alt-text, which I can’t see on my tablet, but I need to point out that Robin is totally doing the UK version of flipping the bird (flicking a V) in the final panel. I don’t think either of them realise this, but still.

We had a homeless student hanging out in our building fall semester. I don’t think the administrators knew, and I sure AF wasn’t going to tell them. He was active in a student group that focused on homelessness issues.

So, I have to get this off my chest.

I’m pretty much dead-set on emigrating from the United States as soon as I can, now. I’m at a point where I don’t feel like I can catch up on the things I haven’t accomplished by now, and it’s mostly because of my environment. Everyone who knows me just sees my past behavior and lack of accomplishments, and the only reputation I seem to be able to get around here is That Goofy Slacker Guy, which isn’t what I want for myself.

I can’t keep being the guy who used to have temper issues when he was a kid because everyone kept telling him how “bright” he was just because he was autistic, so now he’s crumbled under the weight of those expectations and just reverted to being the sorta weird but harmless funny guy in every friend group. It’s just another set of expectations I have to live up to, and I can’t see a way out if I live anywhere my past can find me by just driving a few hours.

The only way I can see all of that that changing is for me to move as far away from everyone who knows me as possible, even if it means I might not see people I love again for a very long time, if at all. I’ve got a lot of existential angst, lately (thank you Twitter), and I can’t stop thinking that when the planet is on fire and I’m dying alone in radioactive mud, my last thoughts will be that I’d never given myself an opportunity to really prove I could be something, even if I’m the only one I’m proving anything to.

New Zealand is looking like a decent choice, if I can find work there in a relatively affordable place and establish a career of some sort. I’ve always been interested in filmmaking, and some of my favorite TV has been produced there. I’m sure it’ll have its own set of weird, arbitrary problems, but if I can get there, I’ll learn to adapt. It won’t be the same problems for all the same reasons, with all the same people constantly hammering in the consequences of me not succeeding immediately, and that’s all the change I really need.

Sorry for dumping this (and my other meltdowns) on all of you folks. It’s probably disjointed and might not make much sense, but I had to at least type it out, y’know?

Hey Taffy! Whatever you decide to do, I hope it works out for you.

Also, stop hogging that radioactive mud – if the planet’s on fire we’re ALL dying, and I hear radioactive mud REALLY opens those corpse pores.

I left the UK four years ago (for moderately similar reasons) for a country where I couldn’t speak a word of the language, doing a job (teaching English) which I knew fine I was unsuited for, and have no regrets what so ever. Go for it!

Honestly, teaching English someplace where I don’t understand the language also sounds good. I still wouldn’t fit in, but it would be because I’m the Foreign Guy, instead of all these things I’ve had no say in. You’ve given me another option to consider, so thank you.

Forgo asking for housing. Becky can continue to stay over at Leslie’s place and absorb her wisdom in everything.

Well everything except romance – Leslie’s been messy in that area.

I love the complete lack of self-preservation instinct it takes to say to a potential employer that she’ll legit just stay homeless rather than help her get elected just to stay evil. Like oof been there kid and I love you.
