So I understand (after reading the “about” page) that this is brand new and no actions that took place in previous comics effect things in this comic. My question is, does that include people and their abductee status?
I must say, I do like your planning on the colors. Joyce’s world has been pretty much orange and red, and as we switched over to a new circle of characters, the dominant colors are blue and green. It’s a handy visual.
Not that I wouldn’t have read and loved this regardless, but I admit I was hoping Joe would show up and Joe the place (and ladies) up, and Danny too. Cause I have a soft spot for Danny.
Now: Question Time!
I get that this is a continuity reboot, but does this stem out of some timey-wimey shennanigans that went on in J&W? Did Head Alien/The Cheese/Walky do something to the timeline that erased all the Abductin’ goin’ on?
Nah. There are already an established number of alternate universes adjacent to the Walkyverse. There’s the one Jason’s family comes from, there’s the one the new Head Alien comes from (in Joyce & Walky!), and there’s the one the Fans! folks come from. This is just another one of them floating out there.
Isn’t the universe where Jason’s family comes from dead? Or was that just a universe they visited on their way to the one they currently resided (The older Walkyverse) in that they sentenced to a slow energy death? I always thought that it was pretty hardcore (in a bad way) of Jason’s father to kill his own home universe just to get revenge on the Cheese.
Nah, “Heat Death of the Universe”-flavored dooms tend to take millennia to complete, so either way, Universe Chesterfield will probably keep chugging for a good while longer no matter what.
I can’t wait to see where this comic takes us in this crazy world full of adventures and such. The best of luck to you with this new comic, Mr. Willis. *bows*
None of this interests me except for Dina being in the background. I demand more Dina!
(While I can’t literally demand anything of you, I can and will state my wishes as to which character/s I would like to see more of).
Eh he’s a little overstrung, but as long as he isn’t sneaking into her room to watch her sleep without her knowledge, sabotaging her modes of transport and engaging in mass glitter use I think he’ll eventually do okay. Eventually.
Not before some drama and laughs though at his expense.
1. I absolutely love this comment system! Why in the world do more comics not do this? Much better than thread-a-day in the forums, and a number of comics don’t even do that!
2. Greatly looking forward to where this comic is heading, absolutely love J&W so have high hopes! Though gotta say Shortpacked! never really grabbed my interest personally.
Just putting in my $.02 that I don’t really like the diminishing font size for comment replies. Seems okay on my mobile, but it was unreadable on my desktop.
This new direction seems so reflective and inverted of Roomies! Coming into the whole stream late, I have to say it’s a nice, fresh way to avoid reading through an archive to learn about all these awesome characters. Must be refreshing for the artist too One comment: I know no one likes IE. I know I should get firefox. Just thought I’d share that for some reason the very cool background disappears to be replaced by this funky, ugly, no-interest blue color background.
I agree, major shame. Old Awesome Background is great, ESPECIALLY with the transparent panels. “Funky, ugly, no-interest blue color” sums this up pretty nicely (sorry Maggie!!)
The blue is good, it mirrors the ‘black’ comment background on the Shortpacked! site. It could be a bit thinner, but I can read the comments much more easily now.
Happy Nonbinary People's Day, you gemstones. A year or two back we introduced FLASH GORDON's first enby, the outlaw lawman Bones Malock. Having known and loved a lot of nonbinary people, I knew the truest way to represent you was as a unsettling desert pirate with a lightning sword
Happy International Non-Binary People's Day to all those who work, create, parent, protest, love and live without ever fitting into someone else's category.
Okay, everyone's jumping to conclusions, but Joyce was hit with a mysterious pink gas in Thursday's strip.
Now, in recent years, the police are known to increasingly use military grade weapons.
Which reminded me of this bit of proposed technology from the 1990s:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bomb
hey, kid, what do you want to play with from the cool superhero movie? is it a nude, melting senator who feels like a stretch armstrong doll that has been left out in the son and maybe mildly chewed by a neighborhood dog? WELL, SON, YOU'RE IN LUCK!
Joyce is absolutely totally straight and just wants to hang out with her best friend, who happens to be another lady. This is normal behavior and a normal biblical quote to use that has no other context.
GAL PALS
OK, I said I was going to a thread of receipts together on the guy who runs Kapow, in odder to explain why I personally would recommend not giving him your business at TFN.
Starting with the original post, revealing the guy loves sharing right wing fascist stuff on LinkedIn.
Alex Maw@xjmaw.bsky.social ⋅ 6m
Since you might think it's weird you got a like on this over a year after the fact, the director of Kapow just shared this on LinkedIn; i.imgur.com/hqQYWgO.png
Danny is very emotional.
Good to see that Joe still hasn’t changed at all in 13 years and a continuity shift
Poor Danny. So is he going to be the Joyce this time?
What goes around comes around, bizznitch.
I shall take that as a yes, since I figure you know what your husband is planning.
Naw, I’ve read ahead a little, but I don’t know that much more than you. He’s very cagey.
Joyce is still Joyce.
Of course Joyce is Joyce.
But is she the Joyce?
Holy crap, is that Dina in the third panel?
Just noticed you are tagging even the background characters. So now I can confirm any people who might be a major character
I don’t always tag the background characters. If it’s their first appearance, I let people notice or guess at them for a while first.
In that case, I’m guessing blue shirt guy in the last panel is Jason.
So I understand (after reading the “about” page) that this is brand new and no actions that took place in previous comics effect things in this comic. My question is, does that include people and their abductee status?
There are no abductees in Dumbing of Age.
Yet.
Wait then, no The Cheese either? =(
Curveball: Joyce looks shocked in panel one because she’s spotted Alf and Doug Funny… and sees what they’re doing…
Not Patty Mayonnaise and Willy?
That’s what makes it a Curveball. She was EXPECTING Patty and Willy.
I must say, I do like your planning on the colors. Joyce’s world has been pretty much orange and red, and as we switched over to a new circle of characters, the dominant colors are blue and green. It’s a handy visual.
I don’t know why but when I’m reading Joe’s dialogue in my head its in Patrick Warburton’s voice. I think I like that.
Same here! It was automatic. Somehow the pacing of his lines in these first strips here are a really good match.
Dunno why, but to me joe sounds kinda like a cross between George Clooney and Isaiah Mustafa (The Old Spice guy), but Patrick Warburton works also.
Not that I wouldn’t have read and loved this regardless, but I admit I was hoping Joe would show up and Joe the place (and ladies) up, and Danny too. Cause I have a soft spot for Danny.

I miss the comment button in the navigational controls :'(
Thanks to that first panel, I can’t stop imagining Joe as played by Bruce Campbell.
… damn it, now that thought will never, ever leave my head.
I’m so glad Danny still has a mullet, even if it is even more out of place nowadays. He just isn’t Danny without that horrible hair!
I can’t wait to see where this comic takes us in this crazy world full of adventures and such. The best of luck to you with this new comic, Mr. Willis. *bows*

Danny seems kinda crazy……
Eh he’s a little overstrung, but as long as he isn’t sneaking into her room to watch her sleep without her knowledge, sabotaging her modes of transport and engaging in mass glitter use I think he’ll eventually do okay. Eventually.
Not before some drama and laughs though at his expense.
Just gotta say 2 things:
Ever see the comments on YouTube videos? Many webcomics don’t have comments sections because they can (or did) easily devolve into… that.
Is it me or does Dina’s hat appear to have an eye and teeth in that one panel?
I think it’s a frowning frog hat.
Angry frog on the head
Dinosaur!
Dinosaur! Dinosaur!
verrah nice… it’s been many many moons, but i lived in beck wing for a couple of years. you’ve got the lobby down pat.

One comment: I know no one likes IE. I know I should get firefox. Just thought I’d share that for some reason the very cool background disappears to be replaced by this funky, ugly, no-interest blue color background.
People said the awesome background made things hard to read and they hated it, so there’s a blue there now.
Well that’s a shame. I seriously prefer the old awesome background myself. Thought it went with the transparent panels beautifully.
I agree, major shame. Old Awesome Background is great, ESPECIALLY with the transparent panels. “Funky, ugly, no-interest blue color” sums this up pretty nicely (sorry Maggie!!)
I’m with Falcon on this.
The blue is good, it mirrors the ‘black’ comment background on the Shortpacked! site. It could be a bit thinner, but I can read the comments much more easily now.
So…wait, what about Sal? I didn’t think it was THAT big of a continuity shift…
Sal and Danny have never met.
:O
So do Jason and his family exist in this universe?
Jason is a math professor.
Okay, am I seeing things, or in the last panel do I see a possible Jason in the background?
Wishful thinking I think. The hair isn’t quite right.
Agreed.
First chance, still failing the Reverse Bechamel Test…
Exhibit A in Joe’s descent into absolute dickery.
I can’t muster the energy to feel anything for Danny’s “struggle” besides complete amusement.
