Kind of like how Mom says “I don’t want you doing that”, but Dad says “don’t let me catch you doing that again”. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt you.

That, and my school had a “Don’t drink” policy, with the Dean phrasing it as: “Don’t drink on campus. Now, we can’t govern you off-campus, but we all know you’ll be responsible.”

Because it’s not as clear-cut as the Dean makes it seem. Whether or not he can object depends on the contract Roz has with the school and the dorm, as well as what’s in the student handbook. There is probably a line about “damaging the reputation of the school”, but how it’s worded will make a LOT of difference.

      • iSaidCandleja-
        iSaidCandleja-

A simple line about photography or the use of images and likenesses might be enough.

        Jetstream
        September 5, 2011 at 12:27 am | #

If the school has been in operation long enough, the contract will almost certainly have a line specifically pertaining to pornographic/erotic video/picture shoots while on campus. Some might even have rules against sexual congress taking place at ALL in a dormitory room.

School rules can get damn specific. I had a friend who’s High School handbook specifically called out the sexual molestation of waterfoul as being a violation.

That sounds unprofessionally done. Poorly phrased.

I mean we gotta set up a specific law for waterfowls? They couldn’t just take care of all fowls at once? Perhaps just a general rule against sexual congress with non-human entities?

I mean if we’re doing things like that then we’ve gotta set a rule for waterfowl and then set up a new rule entirely when someone goes and molests a peregrine falcon.

Makes me wonder what the guys in charge were up to behind the scenes that they needed the law to be that specific.

Law is kind of like that in general. Consider for a moment that some poor politician at some point must have been faced with some manner of crisis to which his response was the illegalization of necrophilia.

For every law that exists there was a point when a council gathered and said “Ok guys. This has to stop.”

Necrophilia? That’s only a 500 gold fine in Cyrodil.

Seriously, some of those laws get hilarious when you think about why they had to be created. For instance, why is it illegal to throw a stone at a bird unless it’s retaliatory in Indianapolis? No stone-throwing at birds I can understand, but do the birds start it often enough you need the second part?

Also keep in mind that the technical definition of the word “molest” is to physically disturb. Maybe the campus is located in a place where waterfowl are a protected species similar to bald eagles and in some places, seagulls. Basically, in old lingo, they could just be asking you not to disturb the ducks.

Old lingo or not, I believe the key word aside from the ‘victim’ in “sexual molestation of waterfoul” would be sexual…. Which causes me to wonder, what IF it was just about disturbing the ducks & the school just happened to have a problem with students mushroom slapping the poor things.

Considering how ducks tend to react to things pretty aggressively, it’s also pretty likely that they did it to try and protect the students. Like saying “Okay, I know this is going to sound weird, but please, keep them trouser-snakes caged when it comes to the ducks, huh? Everyone heard about what happened to Billy Thudpuckett last week, and the doctors are telling me he can never play with the magic fireman properly again. So I don’t care how drunk you get, no tea-bagging them waterfowl!” [/all said in a Kennedy accent]

My county is kinda terrible at being specific on headphones in school. By terrible, I mean there are so many loopholes, it’s swiss cheese to me. I think every student who has used headphones in my high school (including me) has said “It doesn’t say anything about using headphones in the hallway” at least once. Yes, I actually read through the technology section of the Student Code of Conduct; I don’t think it makes me a nerd…. I just like looking for loopholes.

But still, headphone usage in the cafeteria, outside, the gym (although it might count as a classroom), and the halls aren’t explicitly pointed out in the SCoC. Crap, it’s not really forbidden in classrooms! Just have to ask the teacher and even I think you don’t need to if you have proof of the completion of your work.

Reading through the technology section doesn’t make you a nerd. Looking for loopholes with no other purpose does though. It’s ok, you are not alone. I can’t say that you’re in good company, but company none the less.

I temped for a law firm when I was younger and unless memory fails me, it actually doesn’t matter what contract she signed. It’s a zoning thing. Educational housing is on state land which isn’t zoned for private business or private enterprise or advertisement without a license or such in any state I know of. In fact, from what I remember, even shooting off campus would still leave her in the same position, with the Dean that is, unless she registered a business name, license, and address off campus.

It was 2001-2004 because those were the years I was living in Ashton and the photo shoot happened in Teeter (tee-hee-hee) which was next door. That was a commercial interest producing porn on the campus. This scenario is a privately created sex tape with no commercial value to the people who are under the uni’s thumb, so I don’t see anything they could do to Roz that wouldn’t get them sued and her her tuition back.

Probably not. She might get talked to about the situation (mostly so the school can cover it’s bases), but I don’t think she’d get in trouble, because of the fact that the school isn’t going to expect her to be able to monitor the students’ sexual activities and the hallways 24/7. After all, she has to sleep as well and she has her own classes to attend. The RA’s primarily work as The only way she’d get in trouble was if she was aware that the porn was being made and either didn’t stop it or was involved in it somehow.

Unfortunately, this sort of issue can go even further. I don’t recall the details myself since it’s been a long time since then and I didn’t much care about the story, but back in college for me some students got in trouble for going to an off-campus Halloween party, dressing up in stereotypical African tribalwear and putting on blackface, then subsequently putting the pictures up on Facebook.

Clearly, they were not the brightest bulbs, but if I recall correctly the students got into A LOT of trouble with the college administration over it, despite it taking place off-campus.

Very true Linkara. If the school feels that the actions of their students could paint the school in a negative life, the’re not gong to be very happy with it. I remember at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 2008, two college guys who were on the wrestling team did a video for gay porn site. Despite the fact the video was not done on college grounds, and the guys used “stage names”, and didn’t make any mention of their school in the video or site, they got in big trouble with the school for appearing in the video. I’m not sure if they got expelled, but they were the school did bust them.

Quick recap. The shirt is in no way associated with the school. It has never been worn anywhere near schoolgrounds. The party which the shirt was made for is not a school sanctioned event, nor was it ever likely to adhere to the rules of the school in the first place. The students themselves are mere days away from not being associated with the school anymore.

      And yet…

I see your point about the shirts. But at the same time, it was a Catholic school, not a public school. Catholic schools are expected to promote conservative values and renounce what their church deems sinful behavior. Parents pay a lot of money for private school tuition, and they expect a certain amount of discipline, regardless of whether the students have reached 18 or not.

“Parents pay a lot of money for private school tuition”

Is that how it works in other places. Free over here. Comes out of our taxes the same as public schools. Not everyone’s happy about it but it’s one of those stupid things that was worked out back when it made sense and would be more trouble than it’s worth for the government to abolish.

And I’m aware they answer to the Catholic School Board instead of the Public School Board. They have their own policies that do not match the public schools.

And yet this was a news item. Right in there on the 6 O’clock. It’s not that this is typical for them because they’re a catholic school. They go a bit further than the public schools in enforcing their code of conduct but this is still pretty far beyond anything that would normally be expected.

Hell, if we’re getting technical it’s a highschool rather than a college, which also puts it on a separate set of policies, and it’s a school in Ontario rather than Indiana, which once again would be another manner in which it could be expected to operate under separate policies.

I do maintain that it’s a relevant news item to what’s being discussed. Depending on your school it can indeed go farther than what happens on Campus. It all depends on who’s in charge.

It’s a catholic school, not a private school.

Private schools still cost money. Catholic schools aren’t those. At least not over here.

You could have both I’m pretty sure. If the Catholic school didn’t want to be on the Catholic School board then they’d have to privatize.

And yeah, private schools anything goes really. They basically make their own rules and decide how they’re enforced.

The school in question is on the Catholic School board. Anyone can go. It’s just a Catholic School with catholic classes and mass that will work to instill catholic values into its’ students. Generally not a whole lot of motivation to go to a Catholic school if you’re not catholic, but some people do.

Sometimes parents just want their children to be somewhere wholesome without all the drugs and sexuality that a normal school would have (truly misguided. It’s all still there). Some parents might want to make use of some of the school’s facilities. Etc etc. People have their reasons.

You get the drift. They’re not privatized. Tax dollars the same as our public schools.

I thought Crimson Magic was just saying that rent is what really matters. I always come out in support of the importance of paying one’s rent.

Since the dean pretty effectively just threatened to evict Roz if she doesn’t adhere to the rules of her living space it seemed like an applicable concept.

It’s not a quote, as far as I know. I was just shipping in my two cents about rent being the only thing that matters. A fair bit of hyperbole, but as a college student it’s pretty high up there for me.

His doctoral thesis was entitled “All these words should be used more”

It gave a long list of words, detailed their virtues, quantified the ways in which and the degree to which one could benefit through the use of these words, extrapolated from this the frequency of use that would be optimal, and finally through the use of mass wiretappings displayed irrefutably that the frequency of use was far below the optimum previously put forth.

Dean McHenry has a major grudge with the Ethics Committee to this day. He really would have loved to be Professor McHenry.

I think David Willis took that class, too, as he has been using uncommon english words lately in DoA. I had to look up ‘Apropos’, and ‘Obfuscate’ is a word you will -never- hear in a regular conversation. Unless of course it’s used in one of the following:
        1. An intellectually superior level
        2. A political argument meant to prove the other’s inferiority, by using words that might be over the other’s head.
        3. The same as 2 among peers in school (usually among the nerdier/dorkier groups *raises his hand* which I am apart of)
        4. In a thesis.
        5. In a dictionary.
        6. In the best game of Scrabble ever.

I find them to be a bit uncommong in today’s regular conversations. Then again, three syllables tend to be too much for alot of people, so it’s more than likely the community’s fault rather than the person.

“You were holding the camera! Expulsion!”

The final story would read “One Danny ‘Danno’ Wilcox was found to be making these sex tapes as an entrepreneurial venture without the knowledge or consent of his sexually active roommate or the sexual partners that his roommate would bring in. He has been dealt with and we maintain that both Joe Rosenthal and Roz Desanto are only victims in all this. They’ve both been advised to exercise more caution in the future had the rules regarding on campus sexual conduct explained to them. First week of school. Hadn’t gotten around to reading that planner yet. It’s an understandable mistake”

Roz gets a story that doesn’t paint her sexual activity as sinful. Just against the rules. Joe gets sympathy bangs in addition to what the video was already getting him. Danny ends up being quite successful in the industry after some talent scouts liked his work and gave him a gig. Later cedes to Joe that this was the best act of Wingmanship ever. Robin greatly impresses the voters with her reaction to her victimized sister and secures her position for many years to come.

All in all it actually works out quite well for everyone. Scapegoats ftw.

I love that the dean cut through EVERYONE’S bullshit all at once, including Robin’s. Obfuscate implies a deliberate attempt to confuse the issue, not an unintentional one, and the Congresswoman has clearly made this about pleasing her voters more than anything else (as if her voters don’t watch porn). Way to go, Dean!

The Dean, on the other hand, has clearly made this about pleasing the Board of Trustees, the College President, the parents of students and prospective students…

Which isn’t to dismiss his point as invalid; of everyone here, he’s the one with the authority on campus, so he can make statements like this. I’m merely pointing out that Roz’s is pretty much the only uncynical voice in the argument.

And the politician needs someone else to say the intelligent argument. I’m really not surprised. I don’t know if it would make a difference if Joe points out whose dorm the video was taped in; although we all know that he as the proven inability to keep his mouth shut.

Why are so many comments arguing morality still? Pretty sure the Dean character made the point that morals don’t have anything to do with the University’s policies. Also pretty sure that the whole matter falls under the category of “Crap We Do Not Care to Deal With” as far as he and his mountains of daily paperwork are concerned.

My experience with university staff members are that they generally do not care what the students do so long as 1) The acts are not illegal, 2) The acts do not facilitate harm, and 3) The acts do not tarnish the reputation of the school itself. Essentially, the moment that you start wasting their time by causing people to call them up/go into their offices and chew them out over something YOU did, that’s when they care, are very grumpy, and very much likely to screw you over. Pun intended.
