Sal, and Walky, are not white.

I do not personally know or care what their actual ethnicity is, but they aren’t caucasian.

I think they were mixed race in the old continuity, but who knows if that applies to DOA.

If they are Turkish, maybe we could rename all the Walky or Sal ships as the Turkish Delight.

I think of examples like Vin Desiel and The Rock. To a lesser extent, Jessica Alba. You could mistake them for a lot of different ethnic backgrounds. One of my favorite actors is Erick Avari, who’s ethnicity changes from movie to movie.

You can get surprisingly brown while still being “white.” Mediterranean types especially.

That being said, Sal has a DRASTICALLY different skin tone than Amazi-Girl.

Come on now, Billie. You can’t be an intrepid reporter like that. Next thing you’ll be falling for the Kent glasses.

Strictly speaking it would be more accurate to say “SAl is too brown”

Walky & Sal: 1/4 Black. Their mother was a crazy white lady (maybe still crazy in DoA?) and their father half black, half white (not so crazy)

Simple: their bodies are largely the same (save perhaps for Martian tampering). This includes ancestry/ethnicity. The unfolding of their lives is all that is different.

I always figured Hispanic, like Robin; perhaps specifically Mexican, as most Mexicans I’ve met have darker skin.

Robin’s skin is a lighter shade, so I actually had her figured for Caucasian for a very long time. Hispanic ancestry is much more defined by facial structure than skin color, and Willis does many things very well, but distinguishing Robin as Hispanic by her facial structure isn’t one of them… or at least I was able to miss it.

When drawing facial structures you have to be careful not to be overly characteristic less you offend someone of that background, besides when you break it down, there is not a whole lot of difference between
a lot of our so called races or nationalities when it comes to facial structures

The problem with her statement isn’t in her logical reasoning. After all IF Amazi-Girl is Sal then Joyce would be mistaken. The fallacy is that she uses the conclusion that Amazi-Girl is Sal to dispute evidence contrary to that same conclusion.
So in other words it follows logic, just bad logic.
Sorry, that was a bit unnecessary, but as one of those Philosophy Majors/Logicians I don’t get to use my skillz very often.

Of course not. Amazi-Girl wears a cape, so you can’t see her back, and Amber (who, I admit, is only my way out there guess – personally I think it’s more likely to be that completely nonthreatening man a few strips back) spends all her time inside playing WoW or a similar MMOG.
And nobody really reads the school paper. It’s just cheaper than traditional toilet paper.

I don’t get it (so far) because Joyce was drugged out of her mind when she saw Amazi-girl while Billie was just kinda drunk. How did Joyce see the whiteness but not Billie?

Well, there’s always the possibility that Billie is just kind of dumb. Which the evidence seems to support. Was she drunk enough to not be able to remember? Certainly doesn’t seem likely. But that doesn’t mean she had the sense to pay attention to silly little details like a superhero in front of her.

I don’t think that’s what she’s saying. I think she means that Joyce was brought up surrounded by white people and therefore assumes people are white by default. She’s accusing Joyce of making a mistake based on her upbringing rather than being racist. Wouldn’t a racist person be MORE likely to notice colour differences?

Honestly, I know Joyce doesn’t mean anything racial abut it (after all, Amazi-Girl does appear to be white), her past remarks regarding… ANYTHING would probably provoke that response easy enough.

New question though… How did Joyce get into Billie’s room? Does she and Sal just leave the main door or bathroom door unlocked, or is their no lock on the bathroom door, or is Joyce just a secret Christian Ninja-Master? I can’t recall if the door situation was explained in that regard.

And while sane people would probably lock the bathroom door to keep out the horror that is Morning!Joyce, the occupants of Billie’s room tend to be drunk or absent, and are possibly slower to react or respond to dangers in their environment.

They’d better hope they don’t end up in a tiger cage. Well, okay, Sal would kill the tiger and wear it’s skin, because she’s Amazi-Girl, but Billie would just blunder into it and completely fail to take basic steps to protect herself.

      • LiC
        LiC
        January 18, 2012 at 8:08 pm | #

yes… I’m aware that they share a bathroom. However, most rooms that share bathrooms, have locks on the both of the doors so that way privacy is maintained between rooms. Which leads to my question of how Joyce gets in. Are there no locks on the doors in these particularly dorms or do Billie and Sal just not lock them.

        • Michelle J Caboose
          Michelle J Caboose
          January 18, 2012 at 8:29 pm | #

But do the doors lock on both sides? Would that be practical? I mean, if the doors can be locked from the outside, then they’d have to be able to be unlocked from the inside, otherwise it would be possible to lock someone in the bathroom. If they only lock from the inside, it would be possible to accidentally lock everyone out of the bathroom. If they can be locked/unlocked from both sides, then Joyce could simply have walked into the bathroom, then unlocked the door to let herself out, into Billie’s room.

It would also be very easy to forget to unlock the other bathroom door when you left, locking the other dorm out of their bathroom without even noticing you’d done so.

Is there anybody who has actually *been* in this sort of dorm to clarify how all this works in reality?

I don’t think there’s any reason to think Joyce racially insensitive. Billie’s comments says more about her own tendency to base her opinion of people on their apearance than it does about Joyce. She assumes because Joyce is white and sheltered she must be racist, which is frequently not the case.

    • begbert2
      begbert2
      January 18, 2012 at 10:53 am | #

As pointed out above, Joyce thought Billie was white. This would seem to cast doubt on her ability to reliably detect race. And although the Waltertons are a fair bit darker than Billie, that doubt in Joyce’s race-dar is still sufficient as a counterargument because Billie has a pet theory to protect.

Honestly, I never ever even came close to noticing. Until Walky or Sal say/do something that makes their ethnicity relevant it doesn’t really exist. Just like Billy’s mixed race ethnicity is irrelevant because she has yet to behave in such a way that requires the knowledge, ‘one of my parents is asian’ to understand.

They look how they look. They act how they act. If I invite them to dinner and they can`t eat what I cooked even though I asked/they failed to inform me about any dietary restrictions then I’ll do my best to find some sort of compromise. Why we think our friends should know more about us than we tell them is beyond me.

I think that Amazi-Girl’s skin is just a little bit less white than Joyce’s (and Billie’s, for that matter). Although that could just be different levels of sun exposure due to Amazi-Girl being out superhero-ing on Sundays instead of attending church or sleeping in.

Amazi-Girl’s skin tone matches Amber’s exactly, though, by some weird coincidence.

By the way, there’s something going on with the comic links. When I was looking at a comic in the archive and I navigated to ‘latest’ it took me to the comic before this one, although the links within the ‘choosing my religion’ storyline are working fine.
