Superpowers or no, Robin apparently still has the metabolism of a coked up hummingbird.

Hopefully this is a paying gig. Like, at least on a “Can take girlfriend to Taco Bell” level.

last time i checked, republican congresspeople don’t generally pay like AOC

It depends. If she is going to run the social media platform for her campaign, that’s likely a paying gig funded by the campaign itself. It’s the congressional staffers who might not get paid, which still doesn’t make sense since those funds would come from their congressional budget paid by the taxpayer, so refusing to pay is an ideological choice rather than a practical one. It also ensures that most staffers be from rich families as those are the only people who can afford to live in DC without a real salary.

Actually, there is a practical reason as well. In theory, if they aren’t getting paid, the only people who will do the job are the ones who want you to get elected (for whatever reason). If pay comes with it, people will take the job who just view it as a job and will may just go through the motions. Of course, that won’t guarantee they will be competent, but nothing is perfect.

that argument doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny when congresspeople get six-figure salaries and a generous pension

This is why no one should ever be in a position to decide how much they get paid to do their job.

That’s really flawed logic. If there’s no pay, then nobody CAN take the job if they’re not already wealthy

I’d much rather have politicians who treat it like a job than rich assholes who’ve never worked a day in their lives

It’s also just wrong. Staffers get paid, though often not much – at least for the lower level peons.

Campaign staff also gets paid, but a lot of the grunt work is done by volunteers.

Correction: only people who are wealthy or corrupt will take the job. If they’re interested in getting all their income through bribes, it’s a great job.

You have it the other way around. Congressional staffers are paid through the feds, it’s one of the perks of the job. Campaign staffers are paid by the campaign and MIGHT NOT actually get paid, especially if they work for cash-strapped candidates.

She could be one or the other, but if she’s smart she’d be a Congressional staffer. That way she’d be able to work from Indiana doing tweets and Facebook posts and Instagram posts, and if she did have to travel to DC she’d have it picked-up as a write-off as part of the job.

Some misconceptions floating around here: Congressional staffers are paid – Congresscritters get a budget to staff their offices. However junior level staffers are paid relatively poorly, especially for an expensive town like DC. AOC made the decision to bump her staff’s minimum salary to what she considered a living wage for the area. This still came out of her staffing budget, I believe at the expense of the normally better paid top level staff.

Official campaign staff are also normally paid, though a lot of the low level work is done by volunteers – Robin commented at the start of the rally arc about the bros being unpaid interns.

Either way, low paid by Congressional staff standards is still almost certainly more than Becky’s making at Galasso’s unless she’s really cleaning up on the tips.

Have you ever used tamarind paste? It has a very similar combination of sweet and acidic to maple and lime. In fact, I have often seen people recommend lime juice and molasses to replace tamarind in recipes if you can’t find it locally.

Cadbury cereal is the same as Smarties cereal.

        1) Take out bowl (preferably clean)
        2) Put in Smarties/Cadbury eggs
        3) Put in milk
        4) ???
        5) Enjoy?

That reminds me of this one experiment our teacher showed us in high school. You put in salt or sugar into some liquid and stir it until you can no longer dissolve any more into the liquid and then you heat up the liquid so you can dissolve in more salt or sugar so you got a super saturated solution. Then add a grain of salt or sugar once its cooled down and the whole thing just precipitates out of the liquid into a tower. Have Robin do something similar.

              Thanks!
I’ve done similar experiments, so the appearance and effects of the crystallization process wasn’t anything new to me, but it’s still cool to learn that you can just leave supersaturated fluids sitting for a year and still activate them much like you would an instant ice pack, via a simple chemical contact trigger. Much appreciate you digging that up for me. 🙂

I have heard tell of eldritch comestibles known as “dessert pizzas.” Is it possible that Galasso’s Pizza (and Subs!) has such on its menu?

If so, perhaps Robin could order one that was half Feats-O-Meats and half Cadbury Creme Egg.

Dessert pizzas are served cold, though, in large part ’cause dessert ingredients tend to taste a lot less tasty after they’re melted [seriously, try melting gummi bears at some point, and see if you can manage to keep them down].

So maybe a bit hard to half-and-half-it, unless Galasso serves a cold cuts version of the meats pizza. 😛

I’ve been to a bakery that sold it by slice, room temperature. I was like 12 but I remember liking it a lot. Chocolate cookie crust, chocolate spread of some kind (this was maybe pre-nutella, definitely pre- nutella being a trend and acceptable for decent bakeries to replace their own chocolate with), and I think like, nuts and m&ms on top?

Well, I mean, there are the kind of desserts you get at pizza joints, typically cinammon, apple, or a combination of both, but those usually aren’t- to my experiences- listed as “dessert pizzas”, even in those instances when they do use the same kind of dough. I’ve typically seen the label applied to [cookie or pastry crust] offerings with assorted toppings (to a resulting visual effect similar to that of a pizza with assorted pizza toppings).

But yeah, hot pizza-esque desserts definitely do exist, and that may certainly have been the intent of the comment I replied to. Even still, it’d be pretty hard to match the cooking temperature if you were to half-and-half those, since they cook a lot quicker than normal pizza.

Well, I guess they can always just cut two pizzas into halves and append the halves together like frankenstein’s monster parts. 😛

But.. but gummi bears instantly turn into a fluid when they melt, so how do you even manage that? Or by “just melt”, do you mean “warm and soft”? ’cause yeah, that’s not bad. It’s the chemical reaction that happens with the gelatin [remember, that’s crushed bone powder] at high temperatures that’s the issue that results in the disgusting flavor I mentioned. So long as you don’t get to that point, it’s fine. 😛

Robin’s politics in DoA were, at the start, indicated to be a sort of parody of real world, extreme rightwing politicians [with Trump and Palin seeming to be the two primarily referenced], but with her intentions being based less in maliciousness and more casual thoughtlessness.
She panders very much to expectations [as her real world counterparts do], without consideration of the consequences [again, as per real world politics], but without any ill intentions [to her distinct credit].
A clearer example of that is in Robin’s reactions to Roz’s sex video [link], where she shows absolutely no hostility to her sister, despite having a clear focus on meeting voter expectations; On the other hand, she also showed little awareness or consideration for her sister’s motivations, treating the whole matter as a publicity affair, thus further showing how thoroughly Robin’s perspectives lay only on surface considerations.

Of course, the encounters with Leslie seem to have given Robin a more thoughtful perspective on things, and Becky’s political considerations should be in line with Leslie’s, so Robin may actually be giving the matter a touch deeper consideration than her norm. ..on the other hand, with her line about her popularity, it’s easier to just assume that she’s adapting by switching her superficially held political views to ones that are giving her improved popularity.
Hence, while she does cater to tropes and memes for the sake of being ‘hip’ or otherwise catering to voter expectations, the real basis for what dictates her actions is just her desire to stay in office by utilizing whatever rhetoric keeps her there.

In short, despite her extreme character, she’s actually just a pretty average politican, I think. 😛

Not sure if it’s to her credit or not, since Robin tends to be rather myopic. Since her focus was on the positive feedback she was getting from the twitter changes, it probably simply never occurred to her to respond negatively, which is the more fundamental reason she was so surprised at Becky’s expectations.
That said, Robin isn’t really the grudgey, take-it-to-heart sort to begin with, so it may be fine to credit her on the matter regardless.

“never occurred to her to respond negatively”

I’m not sure joke-threatening someone with a GULAG [we’ll assume that just means ‘labor camp’ in modern application, since the soviet union no longer exists] is really a negative response, or at least not to the serious, harsh sense I was referring to.

Well, it’s not like the United States doesn’t currently have active labor camps.. and, to a pervasiveness the typical American likely isn’t aware of. There are ones you can sign up for voluntarily, ones you can get forced into by being homeless, the judicial concept of forced community service, and even states or private prison chains where forced penal labor is still a thing.

Still, probably wouldn’t refer to any of those things by ‘gulag’ if you were being remotely serious about the intent to punish. 😛

Robin often has the instincts of a decent person; recall how her immediate, no-questions-asked, no-need-to-think-about-it reaction to finding out one of her interns was a rapist was that she’d get him thrown in a cell.

It’s a justification used for politics that give rich people more money and not anybody else.

Trickle down economics is simply the way Reagan’s critics tried to brand a completely non-controversial economic theory, believed by a large percentage of economists, as being crazy because Reagan liked it.

I don’t think I called it publicly, but this is the outcome I’ve been expecting since Becky took over Robin’s Twitter and I know several people were predicting something like this whenever that topic has come up since. It’s hard not to predict, mind, when one considers Robin’s clear “whatever does the trick for me to keep this gig” approach to public office.

Well, a reasonable mistake, considering your “pessimism” is also realism. Politicians of Robin’s sort (who campaign actively against their own personal interests/the interests of those like them with the goal of reelection) follow the money. The young people on twitter making her popular are doing just and only that: making her popular. That’s not going to stop the NRA/churches/big oil from funding her campaign, and that’s really what it’s all about y’all.

Robin’s absurdly high sugar intake in the original universe related to the fact that her powers were fueled by sugar [much like Rikido’s Sugar Rush quirk in My Hero Academia]. I don’t think we’ve yet seen signs in DoA that she’s quite as extreme sans powers?
As I see it, in either universe her general tendency is just toward junk food in general, and that’s reflected just fine with her current meat-heavy, sugar-heavy, high-quantity order. Just, in the original universe, her eating habits were weighted towards sweeter junk foods due to the improved benefits of consuming such.

Well, let me know if I overlooked something that contradicts those impressions. ^.^

I have to assume that Ms. De Santo is a Republican, or at least has Republican leanings.  So follow one of the last pieces of advice that a Republican gave us that actually was good for us as and “Just say no”, Becky.

Of course, we all know that Becky needs money even more than a fish needs water, and poverty and the desire for financial security can cloud a person’s mind far better than the Shadow ever could (and of course, the name of this comic is *NOT* “Making Good Decisions”), so we can all see where this is going to go.

And yeah…eek. Robin being the kind of person who would ‘deport Marcie’s parents if it would get her more votes’ is a LOT more worrisome in the age of Trump.

Any odds on whether Becky’s updated her views on immigration yet? I know she’s heading more and more to the left but she’s probably still got some cobwebs running around and the sooner Robin gets away from that the better.

I worked for an election, just a small, special election for state representative (not national congress). Started out as a volunteer, later got hired and was payed 20 bucks an hour. The work was a cathall of everything, like stuffing envelopes, building campaign yard signs, going door-to-door, cold calling people. Had my fill of campaigning, but yeah. (This was also in my younger, naive days when I was a Republican.)

The main question is whether Robin is making a pivot to the left, with a party change, or if she wants memes that supports the GOP.

    • BBCC
      BBCC
      April 12, 2019 at 5:12 am | #

GOP’s already dropped Robin’s endorsement. The election’s only a few weeks away (it’s oct. 16thish) and so she’s probably still going to have the letter beside her name, but I don’t think she’d be an actual member? Is crossing the floor to the Dems allowed in the States? I do know the Dems are running a candidate already so she’s not going to be able to run for them afaik.

      • BenRG
        BenRG
        April 12, 2019 at 5:20 am | #

If I understand correctly, who Robin would sit with is mostly determined by the House organisation chaired by the house leader and the whips, rather than the national party. If the GOP in the House is happy to have her then she sits with them, no matter how much that would annoy the state- and national-level RNC.

      • thejeff
        thejeff
        April 12, 2019 at 7:37 am | #

She’d still be a member – not that it’s really that official most of the time. There are definitely cases where someone wasn’t endorsed, won anyway and remained in the party. Lisa Murkowski (Sen-Alaska) lost the primary to a Tea Partier, won the general election as an Independent and was seated as a Republican Senator.

She could cross the floor to the Democrats. Or declare herself an Independent. Or some other party, but that’s essentially the same thing since she’d be the only Representative in the House from it. If she did, she’d most likely choose to caucus with one of the two parties in order to have a chance at committee assignments and the like. What kind of deal she could strike depends on how critical her vote was – if it determined which party held a majority, the stakes would be high.

I don’t where Willis is going to take this, but in reality, this shouldn’t work. She should lose. If she had years of incumbency and was well-known and popular, she might be able to survive it. If she’d switched much earlier and was able to run as a Democrat she’d have a chance, depending on the swing of her district. But there’s a real Democrat in the race and anyone who might support her change is likely to already be behind him. Even if she’s getting popular feedback on social media, that doesn’t translate into votes.
And she should really be getting hatestorms from trolls on the right.

In all universes, Robin has magical hijinks powers that make the improbable probable, as long as the end result can be punctuated with a slide whistle.

It was a dark pact she made to get these powers however, as she gave up the ability to be interesting or relatable in a comic about exploring relationships, insecurity, and one’s religious faith.

Here's an entertaining cite at the bottom of the first page
The problems with this prosecution are legion, but most immediately, the
government cannot prosecute Judge Dugan because she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts. Immunity is not a defense to the prosecution to be determined later by a jury or court; it is an absolute bar to the prosecution at the outset. See Trump v. United States,
603 U.S. 593, 630 (2024).

Where did Hollywood go so wrong? I thought movies were supposed to be an escape from reality, a chance to put your worries aside and not have to think about any underlying ideas or concepts. Well, not anymore. theonion.com/you-can...

You Can’t Even Watch A Movie Anymore Without Seeing Some Theme Explored
I’ve loved movies ever since I was a little kid. Just stepping into that dark theater, with the smell of fresh popcorn, was like being transported to a whole other world. It used to be so magical. But now I’m thinking about boycotting movies altogether. Why? Because I can’t seem to watch one anymore without […]

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908. "You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.
AI generated ad by a company called Travello showing the 10 most visited cities in Europe, except the cities are hilariously poorly placed. London is in Wales, Paris is in Ireland, Rome is in France, Rom (yes like Rome but without an E) is in Spain, Barcelona is in Morocco, Prague is in Germany, Vienna is in Italy, Istanbul is in Austria, Milan is in Libya, and Antalya is correctly shown as in Turkey but is in the wrong place. Also a few of the borders like Switzerland and Austria or Hungary and Slovenia are missing.
