I really love this storyline so far. I’d actually love to see Becky *not* be homeless anymore and somehow turn into a genuine boundaries-crossing, highly-paid political prodigy.
It has at times been used to describe unrealized natural prodigious talent realized later in development than usual prodigy age. Becky’s situation of picking up an entirely new field with no prior training or experience would qualify given she has the talent. She’s essentially the equivalent of a child in the field.
It can also refer to young adults like Becky, especially I’ve noticed in politics. Ralph Reed, a former higher-up in the Christian Coalition, and Bobby Jindal, former governor of Louisiana were both described as wunderkinds/wunderkinder because they were relatively young (especially Reed when compared to Pat Robertson) but viewed as highly successful.
Yep. And he’s still on the air because when his original station was sold to the station that bought it out, there was a contract provision that the 700 Club would have to remain, in perpetuity, on the air. That provision has carried over through multiple buyouts, so now Disney has to keep him on the air on ABC, or, now, Freeform. Nothing but death (and possibly not even that, since his son hosts sometimes) can take Robertson’s 700 Club off the air. It’s been running since 1966.
Really, Becky, you need to embrace your role as a Sith Lord. You’ve sold your soul for the power of the Dark Side so there’s no use fretting about it now. Get your red lightsaber, black robes, and tats.
The Sith path involves backstabbing Robin to ascend, and then get an apprentice (Faz?) that Becky could try to backstab and avoid being backstabbed by.
To be honest the side philosohphy isn’t as toxic as conservatism.
Given that the Sith philosophy is ethically opposed to charity and altruism, is based on doing whatever *feels* right to you personally, and in general can be summed up as “fuck you, got mine, if you want yours come and fite me for it”…
…like, the venn diagram overlap is non-negligible, is what I’m saying.
I was not sure who Meredith was, so I clicked on her tag, and then started reading from one of the strips she was in, and it led me to the below strip, which shows Mike offering an ignored throwaway comment that reveals he has a well-developed analysis of power imbalances. I’m still curious about him, what makes him tick and how he got to be the way he is. That arc gave us some info, but it felt like just a peak into what he’s all about to me, not the full story.
For those who didn’t read Shortpacked, Meredith was living with Amber’s online friend (would-be boyfriend) Nate, and Amber saw her as a romantic rival…even though it appeared Meredith really had no interest in Nate herself.
Meredith was the one that was smoking weed on Garbage Roof. Later on she asked someone how to get to some restaurant, and the person she asked (possibly Joe?) told her it was near Blowjob Cat. That may have been the first appearance of Blowjob Cat in the strip.
It would be weird – presumably, if your opponent’s close relative is working on your campaign, you’d make it a talking point. “They’re so bad even their family wants ME to win.”
I’m just so happy for Becky. Sure she can totally go to jail for it but how many people have EVER found a gift that made its recipient anywhere near as happy as Dina is right now?
Y’know, as a campaign manager, Becky should have hiring authority *and* access to a buncha cash. She ain’t going to be able to pretend to do this job all by herself, I don’t think, so…
If Dorothy was into power (vs into saving the world) she might agree to work behind the scenes and try to sabotage Robin, but that’s not how she plays things.
Lucy *pops in from the left*: “I respect your choice, but my vote goes to Starfire. However, I feel you should be able to make an informed choice. Want to watch Teen Titans with me?”
Agatha: “OK”
I wanna say she was, too, but I’m not sure I can fully internally disconnect her Batgirl run from Barbara’s Oracle phase. The latter tends to colour my feelings on everything positively.
Agatha, you’re a bit… suggestable.
Which makes it all the more suprising you resisted the siren call of the Y and the attendant MRS degree from the first RM that laid eyes upon you.
And for that, I’m actually glad.
Question: wouldn’t first years be required to stay on-campus? So Becky just needed to be able to afford tuition and then board on campus?
I mean, on-campus housing costs an arm and a leg, anyway, so it might be cheaper for Becky to live elsewhere, but I don’t know if IU has strict regulations on that.
Becky was negotiating the best possible deal for her long-term future; an apartment so she has somewhere she can crash (with Dina) from sophomore year on would be good foresight.
The whole Dumbiverse is set at Indiana University, which is absolutely a real university. Students are required to live on campus in their first year, but there are always waiver applications for that and “My homophobic father kidnapped me from your campus and I don’t want him to know where I live” would probably fly.
Due to the floating timeline and/or the needs of a continuous narrative arc, there is not always an exact correspondence between DoA world and the locations and/or rules of real-world IU-Bloomington. Locations get remodeled, courses get added and dropped, offered majors get added and dropped in the real world faster than the single-semester timeline of DoA can adapt.
But bureaucracy is timeless. There will always be onerous rules, and there will always be waivers to those rules, those waivers presenting an alternative set of onerous rules.
Anyway, it’s a comic. The very laws of physics are occasionally subservient to the whims of its creator, let alone any pettifogging rules of authority figures.
To be fair, the About page only refers to “Indiana University,” a statewide institution with nine campuses. The “Bloomington” part is inferred by its being far and away the largest campus, also by its being the place that pops up when you google “Read Hall.”
But it is still good advice to read the “About/Read Before Posting” page before posting.
You know those grotesque images on the Web of Bart Simpson, Homer Simpson, Popeye, Charlie Brown, Spongebob et al re-imagined with human features?
Has anyone done this with DoA characters?
I shall buy TWO pretzels for anyone who could create a Becky face — just to see how big her full toothy smile would be, as well as that one eyeball that floats on top of her hair.
Optimus Prime broke down and cried on the set of "Transformers" (2007) due to the extensive use of green screen filming. He reportedly said, "This is not why I became an actor."
“I’m just going to say it, shame on any of us who throws a trans child under the bus for thinking they’re going to get elected. That child deserves our support. Don’t worry about the pollsters calling it distractions, because we need to be the party of human dignity.”
Minnesota Star Tribune@startribune.com ⋅ 1d
Gov. Tim Walz is doubling down on trans rights — and criticizing members of his party who are retreating — at a time when the issue has become a political lightning rod nationally and back home in Minnesota.
they managed to get the arms and thighs to be different grays, which I wasn't sure they'd be able to do, the way the mold's set up
though maybe they're just producing a lot of extra thighs and/or arms in the wrong colors and throwing those away, i dunno
Agatha Enchanted.
ha!
That movie creepy me the fuck out, ngl.
*creeped
The book made a lot more sense (although: still creepy!)
Becky: Walking Easy Button
also, Dina may want to include at least the bathroom in her definition of “this room”
I really love this storyline so far. I’d actually love to see Becky *not* be homeless anymore and somehow turn into a genuine boundaries-crossing, highly-paid political prodigy.
She deserves it!
Agatha, some dying kid in the hospital will get better, but only if you hit a home run for him.
“Okay!”
Agatha, invent faster than light travel.
“Okay!”
Carla: “No way! That’s MY job!”
Agatha, break the laws of thermodynamics.
“Okay!”
Agatha, in Reed Hall, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!
“Okay!” (goes to the fountain, defies thermodynamics there)
“Okay!”
“Agatha, invent time tr-wait.”
I will have about to seen what you have be doing there.
Me: “Agatha, create a better ending for Game of Thrones.”
Agatha: “Okay!”
Agatha starts typing a script and calling producers.
Oh god, please!
Oh stop yo bongoin’
They are dropping it for the new star wars movie.
That only helps if one likes Starwars better than Game of Thrones. Which many do not.
“Agatha, don’t agree to this request.”
“….”
“Okay, I won’t”
“But you just did.”
“No, I did”
*Agatha’s face grows tense*
“…Nokay!”
Agatha, get me a Thunder T-shirt.
“Okie”
Wunderkind? Will someone explain this to me?
It’s a German word that can basically be translated as child prodigy (literal translation would be wonder child, I guess).
Becky still sees herself as a child. She mentioned “adults being conditional.”
It has at times been used to describe unrealized natural prodigious talent realized later in development than usual prodigy age. Becky’s situation of picking up an entirely new field with no prior training or experience would qualify given she has the talent. She’s essentially the equivalent of a child in the field.

Ralph Reed, a former higher-up in the Christian Coalition, and Bobby Jindal, former governor of Louisiana were both described as wunderkinds/wunderkinder because they were relatively young (especially Reed when compared to Pat Robertson) but viewed as highly successful.
*Everyone* is young compared to Pat Robertson. He’s 89 years old. He was born in 1930.
The world’s been stuck with that reptile for that long? UGH.
Sure now, but when Ralph Reed took over the Christian Coalition he was almost 30 and Robertson was almost 60.
I can’t believe no one else has pointed this out, but…
It’s what Asuka sarcastically calls Shinji in Evangelion.
Come on guys! Evangelion reference!
*plays Mick Jagger’s “Let’s Work” on the hacked Muzak*
Agatha is the TUTORIAL of easy mode.
I wonder if Agatha is registered to vote in that district or if she was too busy agreeing to consider that.
Agatha, go update your voter registration.
“Okay!”
Actually, don’t do that if you’re gonna vote for Robin.
“Okay!”
Hey, Agatha!
How you doin’?
“Okay!”
Also Dina is absolutely precious in the first panel, I want to give her a big hug.
Quick Becky, tell people to vote for Amazigirl beating up your respective dads!
Coincidentally it’s Sunday morning.
Or maybe not since Agatha isn’t at church.
Agatha goes to the 11:00am service.
Looks like church going clothes, not toilet fixing ones.
Agatha’s doing her best.

The sith have better clothing style, though.

For those who didn’t read Shortpacked, Meredith was living with Amber’s online friend (would-be boyfriend) Nate, and Amber saw her as a romantic rival…even though it appeared Meredith really had no interest in Nate herself.
Until it appeared she did.
Yeah, about that — where is Meredith in this strip? Am I just too blind to see her?
Ah, just now I get it — she’s supposed to be the one speaking outside the panel!
Meredith must be the one who wants her toilet plunged.
Meredith was the one that was smoking weed on Garbage Roof. Later on she asked someone how to get to some restaurant, and the person she asked (possibly Joe?) told her it was near Blowjob Cat. That may have been the first appearance of Blowjob Cat in the strip.
Oops. Actually the Blowjob Cat strip was almost a year after the Garbage Roof one.
Tagging Meredith (and other off panel speakers) is one of those weird little things I love.
I fully expect Becky to try some zanny hijinks that will prevent Robin from being elected that will guarantee her election.
Either that or Robin’s opponent will be revealed to be the psycho rapist kid’s brother.
We’ve never found out what his last name is. Since Robin’s opponent is Jake Manley, I’m hoping that’s not Ryan’s last name as well.
It would be weird – presumably, if your opponent’s close relative is working on your campaign, you’d make it a talking point. “They’re so bad even their family wants ME to win.”
Becky, that is the path of conservatives and moderate democrats!
I’m just so happy for Becky. Sure she can totally go to jail for it but how many people have EVER found a gift that made its recipient anywhere near as happy as Dina is right now?
It’s not a ‘gift’ or ‘bribe’ in politics, it’s ‘lobbying’!
The Dinosaur Lobby’s approval is HIGHLY sought after
Heck in Irregular Webcomic, an Allosaurus is President. It’s funny, it’s from 2004 and it had predicted a brutish beast would win Presidency with the slogan “Let’s make America prehistoric again.“
Pfft, they’re a bunch of fossils.
Okay’s pretty much the answer to everything. Get your galoshes, Agatha.
Y’know, as a campaign manager, Becky should have hiring authority *and* access to a buncha cash. She ain’t going to be able to pretend to do this job all by herself, I don’t think, so…
Who’s she gonna employ?
Dorothy. She’s already recruited her.
Dorothy’s volunteering for Robin’s opponent, Manley, already, and certainly didn’t say ‘yes’ when Becky asked for advice.
That might change if it was an actual ‘I’m hiring you’, but Dorothy strikes me as more straightforward about these things than Becky is?
If Dorothy was into power (vs into saving the world) she might agree to work behind the scenes and try to sabotage Robin, but that’s not how she plays things.
Agatha: Follow up question. Which Robin for what?
Lucy *pops in from the left*: “I respect your choice, but my vote goes to Starfire. However, I feel you should be able to make an informed choice. Want to watch Teen Titans with me?”
Agatha: “OK”
I’m voting for Captain Marvel best Young Justice character.
Mostly because I didn’t know his stick before watching the series.
AGATHA FOR RA!
Okay.
Wait, do we know if Becky’s kept her Galasso job as a just-in-case sideline?
Also, I predict that the opponent’s campaign manager is going to turn out to be Sydney Yus.
That’s a good guess for Sydney. If she’s not a student at IU, it keeps her relevant to the story.
She is a student at IU.
It’s a bit sad that we won’t see Dina again outside of her room.
At least we know she is happy.
Which Robin, Dick Grayson or Jason Todd?
Damien Wayne wants it known that he and he alone is the true Robin. Tim Drake is rolling his eyes in response.
And no DC Comics fan likes remembering Stephanie Brown.
Oy! Stephanie Brown is awesome… as Spoiler.
She was fun as Batgirl too.
I wanna say she was, too, but I’m not sure I can fully internally disconnect her Batgirl run from Barbara’s Oracle phase. The latter tends to colour my feelings on everything positively.
Excuse you, Stephanie Brown was a pretty good Robin for he like 5 issues DC let her be.
Also, Damien’s eyes are much bluer than his.
As far as I know, Jason is the only one we’ve ever had the opportunity to vote for. It didn’t go well for him.
Agatha, you’re a bit… suggestable.
Which makes it all the more suprising you resisted the siren call of the Y and the attendant MRS degree from the first RM that laid eyes upon you.
And for that, I’m actually glad.
I wonder if Becky will ever realise just how alike in their attitudes towards work they really are?
Wait, is Becky manifesting reality distortion powers, like Haruhi Suzumiya?
DoA Book 9: I Will Never Leave This Room Again
You are a Wunderkind, Becky. You truly are.
Better than being wonderbread! (I guess)
Being wonderbread gets you a dapper hat, though.
Is Dumbiverse University a real university? Or was it otherwise confirmed DU has such a policy?
I know some universities don’t require first years to llve in on campus housing.
The whole Dumbiverse is set at Indiana University, which is absolutely a real university. Students are required to live on campus in their first year, but there are always waiver applications for that and “My homophobic father kidnapped me from your campus and I don’t want him to know where I live” would probably fly.

Anyway, it’s a comic. The very laws of physics are occasionally subservient to the whims of its creator, let alone any pettifogging rules of authority figures.
The school depicted is the canon, in-real-life, Indiana University at Bloomington.
Also, try reading the About page!
It’s just a temporary home. It’s not like she’s starting school right now.
Yup. I’d expect her enrollment deal with Robin included room & board, but she needed a place until next semester started.
Besides, that’ll never actually happen. It’s going to be a long time before second semester starts.
Agatha mains Ness in Smash.
Don’t start monologing Becky. Next you’ll be cackling.
Okay, I’m saving panel 2 as a reaction gif.
Then there’s that spade-point chin …
Did we ever learn if Agatha and Meredith are roomies?
I don’t believe Agatha’s roommate has been identified. I suspect it’s Bloodrose. It was a running gag in It’s Walky! that she never quite appeared.
That’s quite a possibilty too.
Everyone else’s roomies on that floor I think has been confirmed (excepting of course Ruth, a solo, and Carla, a solo).
Becky’s jacket pockets have disappeared.
David, please correct this. Women’s clothes need to have pockets too.
