I call that bad writing from the korra team. Korra x Mako was going to be the main ship because there was no certainty of a second season, and when it happened it was considered the leats liked season of korra.
Bolin and Ron Stoppable show that maybe they’re not the perfect boyfriend but they will crawl through broken glass for you and that’s a point in their favor.
Afaik with Korra that was also executive meddling though, not just the writing team being bad. They weren’t initially planning on Korra x Mako to be a thing, that was only changed/added later because traditional pairings made the show more likely to get greenlit for additional seasons.

Beetroot isn’t bad, but it kind of tastes like sweet dirt, but I mean that in the best way. Do Australians use roasted beets on their burgers? That feels a bit reminiscent of putting pineapple on a burger, which I think is pretty good for what it’s worth.

Yeah, I’m inclined to agree. I’m not going to say that Dorothy is worth X points and Walky is worth X-50 points or something like that, because I believe that trying to assign a concrete, numeric value to how someone lives their life is wrong, but it’s very clear that the kind of life that would make each of them happy is very, VERY different. Walky does not have Dorothy’s drive and ambition; she’s the type of person who would spend her weekends networking and attending charity balls, while Walky would much prefer to just sleep in and then watch cartoons/engage in hanky panky till dinnertime. Ultimately, I think the kind of person who will make Dorothy most happy is someone equally as driven as her, somebody who will inspire both of them to ever-greater heights of accomplishment through friendly and mutual competition. Walky, meanwhile, would be happiest with somebody who’s kind, understanding and laid-back, who will be happy regardless of what the future holds, as long as she’ll be with him. (In this, ironically, he’s not that much different from Danny.)
I mean, Walky’s bitter about rejection, which definitely isn’t great in the moment. I’d say in *general*, neither of them are healthy people- Walky doesn’t make choices with concern for long-term repercussions and Dorothy’s a legit workaholic who’s concept of self-care is basically nonexistent in a way that’s, like gauraunteed to make her crash and burn. Meanwhile, Walky tends to see success as unattainable and give up instantly while Dorothy is *very* confident she can achieve her dreams but is irationally willing to destroy herself to get there.
Um, romantically she’s more reasonable tho. Walky’s not being a monster but he is coming off as pushy; altho she doesn’t seem to be upset by it. That… was a bit longer than it likely had to be
I like the analysis! I was more or less thinking about how right now he’s using the fact that they were both in a life threatening situation as an excuse to get back with his ex the day after grinding on another girl, while Dorothy who would probably very much enjoy boning a Walky, still rejected him because she doesn’t want to lead him on as she knows she’s not capable of investing in Walky the same way he would her right now. All while saying something positive and life affirming. Like I don’t believe in “leagues” but Dorothy is definitely out of Walky’s. Be better Walky!
But who knows what will happen tomorrow right? Maybe this chapter was all about Walky and Dorothy getting back together and all the crazy dad kidnapping stuff was just filler.
Oh yeah what walky’s doing now is hella sketchy- like I’ve never been in this exact situation but it doesn’t seem like a great time for flirting; esp. not when you’re sort-of-dating the woman who saved both of your lives.
Basically: Walky needs to learn to move on! Or dorothy could become receptive to a relationship when *not* freshly retrieved from a murder-house. Or some combination!
I think he’s in an emotionally vulnerable place and doesn’t know how to express that. This seems to be the best he can do at the moment. Which isn’t great to be sure.
Also I disagree that Walky tends to see success as unattainable and give up instantly. What happened to him is not unlike what happened to me in college. He was a kid who never had to try to excel in school until he got to college, so he never had to learn any of the tools to get himself to where he needed to be, and college is very much not set up to have the same kind of automatic support system of lower grades, which means his denial is leading him on a path for failure that will have no external intervention until it’s forced on him (fails the class and his parents find out, say). I don’t think that means he thinks success is unattainable, I think he just had absolutely no roadmap on how to get there, and the directions he’s been given from others make no sense to him, because he doesn’t know how to drive a car, he’s always just teleported to his destination before.
I think it’s better to say Dorothy is more mature than Walky in many ways. Or even that they’re not suited to each other because of their personality types.i don’t like using “out of someone’s league” because it can be misused to mean physical attractiveness or social status.
Doesn’t it just mean that they are standing about 3.3 miles apart? I mean in Land Leagues, not Nautical Leagues. Oh, you’re right! This social standing around will soon lead to engaging in social intercourse. Not what either of them needs ATM.
I see it as something that’s really problematic for the future, but what they both need at the moment. Dorothy is better at living partially in the future while Walky lives more in the present. Time binding, and living partially in the future is a valuable skill, but the thing about the future is that you have to make it through the present to get there.
She’s more mature than him to be sure, but I don’t think that they’re unsuited to each other. I actually think that were Walky more mature they’d be almost perfectly suited to each other. They have some very complementary strengths and weaknesses.
Oh Dorothy, eventually you’ll learn to develop a work-life balance that allows you to have someone in your life. Anyone want to place bets on how long it takes her though?
I would bet she can meet love one day, but her personal happiness and that of every women and men shouldn’t depend on finding a lover. It’s a big mistake to think that everyone will find their “soul mate”. Some people are happy just doing what they like.
The problem is that Dorothy *isn’t* happy. A lot of her compromises she’s made have already shown themselves to be bad for her, like how she burns her candle at both ends.
Even if Walky weren’t part of the juggling act, I don’t think she could have gotten through this year without hitting a wall. Walky just kinda helped expose the cracks earlier, in a sentence that sounds way dirtier than intended.
Yeaaaah, Dorothy burning out is pretty much inevitable, Walky or no – the way she cuts leisure time as superfluous and unimportant if her academic work is suffering, and how she’ll neglect everything for crunch? Both of those are VERY BAD for her in the long run. (Not just in the ‘this will eventually cause health problems’ level, your brain just can’t sustain that.) Honestly I think having dated Walky actually put off her burnout for a bit.
Dorothy doesn’t NEED a relationship to be happy, no. She DOES need breaks from her work, academic or volunteering, and those lowkey cartoon dates with Walky were a good thing in that respect. (Granted, I had a depressive burn out and not just a straight overwork one, but even in a good mental health state my energy’s still not back to where it was before the successive depressive episodes since 2013.)
Dorothy needs to develop a work-life balance, period. She doesn’t necessarily need to have a partner unless she wants to and finds the right one. But she does need to eat and sleep somewhat regularly, and she’s not doing that now. She needs some down time occasionally, and to spend time with friends. If, in doing that, she finds a boyfriend, that’s great. But she doesn’t *need* a boyfriend.
I find it really gross how much open contempt y’all have for the idea that someone choosing to put off romantic relationships to focus on other long term goals might have ACTUALLY MADE A HEALTHY, MATURE DECISION FOR THEMSELF

Like, sure. Dorothy was overdoing it. Then she dumped Walky and a few of her extracurricular things like the newspaper and has been doing much better. Making enough time for hygiene and fun is absolutely important. Making time for a boyfriend is only important if that’s something she wants right now. Which it isn’t. Boyfriends will still exist a few years from now.

Except it’s been pretty clear that she did want a boyfriend or at least she enjoyed having one. She’s been shown struggling with herself from the start – torn between her emotional needs and her calculated plans. Her initial comments about not needing the “distraction” and various attempts to limit the nature of the relationship – limits she kept breaking.
Potential boyfriends may still exist in a few years, but relationships don’t get any easier or less time consuming after college, nor does a workaholic building an ambitious career likely have more free time for such distractions.
I’m not fond of the trope that ambitious women have to avoid relationships to be successful and it seems that’s what’s being established here. I don’t think that’s the intent, but her apparent quick recovery after breaking up with Walky points that way. I do suspect we’ll circle back around to that at some point, whether with Walky or someone else. Enough’s been set up as a conflict for her that I think it will be explored eventually.
So here’s a plot twist, you do not, in fact require a boyfriend for the activties Dorothy is/was interested in when she had Walky filling the spot. Y’all need to get off her back about this.
If i may be so bold as to pretend absolutely right choices do exist, she made one when she dumped Walky. They weren’t good for each other, she noticed this, ended it.
I don’t know where you’re getting the trope from. I do not deny it’s existence and the troubles it poses, but as far as Dorothy is concerned, claiming a 19 years old college student is filling up a woman-in-power quota is… a stretch. Plus, you’re assuming she is never again in her life going to try a relationship. She doesn’t/didn’t have time for a boyfriend now, and while it doesn’t get any easier, her priorites can and will change over the course of her life. Not wanting a relationship now, for reasons of keeping a better mental health is a good and valid choice, and this past (in-comic) week has proven it did wonders for her. And lest we forget, while the trope is damaging, not having a relationship is not, in fact, a scar on womanhood. Some women simply don’t want them.
I also do not appreciate this extreme aversion y’all seem to be having about her schedule. Us ADHD people benefit a lot from schedules and having a minute-by-minute one did me absolute wonders in high school. Her current schedule seems to actually be helping her get a healthier lifestyle.
Dorothy never hinted that she thought Walky wasn’t good for her, though she did say she wasn’t being fair to him. Nor is there any reason to think her only interest in him was sex.
She broke up with him because she thought she didn’t have time for a boyfriend – rightly or wrongly. Not because she didn’t love him, not because she replaced him with “other Walky” because she only cared about the sex. The explicit reason for the breakup was her lack of time. With a side of her not treating him fairly because she kept trying to put limits on the relationship and then not being able to stick to them herself.
As for the trope: she’s the ambitious woman in this comic – pretty much the only main character with big goals. Part of her character conflict has been from the start the work/life balance thing. Especially her need for a relationship conflicting with her goals. Currently that seems to have been resolved with “Forget the relationships, stick to the plan”. If she didn’t want a relationship, that wouldn’t be a conflict. She could simply be uninterested. She’s not. Since it’s been made a conflict and apparently resolved by giving up the relationship, it’s a clear example of the trope.
I do think it’s not actually resolved and she’ll get involved again, either with Walky or someone else and she will have to grow and find a better solution. Which will not, to be clear, be giving up on her ambitions.
Not quite the only character with big goals. Sarah wants to be a lawyer, and got raked over the coals pretty thoroughly by the comments section for not sacrificing her scholarship to play personal therapist to Dana.
Nobody, including Dorothy, is saying she doesn’t feel romantic or sexual attraction. Being horny does not mean she wants a boyfriend RIGHT NOW, anymore than my being sleepy means I want to go back to bed. Sure, on one level I do, but I have other shit that I want to get done which I’m willing to resist my immediate bodily urges to accomplish
She has repeatedly emphasized how much her long term goals matter to her and her people keep acting like shit like this means she’s wrong about her own wants and it’s CREEPY. Especially since sexual urges can be alleviated in a much more time efficient way by a little thing called masturbation. It’s even easier than casual sex and a vibrator’s feelings won’t be hurt when she doesn’t have time for it
It honestly seems to me that the situation is basically understood pretty well by most of us- Dorothy doesn’t want to date Walky (she’s got other priorities) and Walky should probably move on; but breaking up with Walky might or might not actually make those goals achievable- we don’t know Dorothy’s upper limits, and honestly neither does she, so there’s a chance she might need to dial back an extracurricular or two as well.
I think the cognitive wiggle-wobble that effects a lot of readers comes from a mixture of liking/disliking a certain ship, character loyalty (Walky!stans don’t want his worries about being a liability to be basically confirmed by narrative; Dorothy!peeps don’t want dorothy to be “punished” for the narrative for breaking up with him) and the fact that some *audiences members* think of romantic pursuits as more valuable than career pursuits in their own lives (I’m one of those!), and kind of project the anxieties surrounding that onto this relationship (I try not to do that tho). It’s an ending that makes a lot of logical sense, but because of the tropes we’ve been saturated with IRL and the emotions we might sympathize with more- I.E, Dorothy’s or Walkys, depending on our goals- it only makes emotional sense for like half the fandom, and therefore takes more work to accept.
Oh for fucks sake. Literally every time she slipped up during their “pause” it was sexual. The entire original basis for their relationship WAS “CASUAL SEX”.
What she didn’t have time for was the commitment required for a romantic relationship. That’s why she ended it
Yes, she likes Walky. Yes she wants to have a long term relationship eventually. She does not however want a relationship with Walky badly enough to make time to give him the attention and care he deserves from a girlfriend.
Playing the long, loooong game here, but maybe what Dorothy needs is someone like Jacob? Conscientious, appropriately but not hyper ambitious, with a mellow side that might offset the manic stuff. The only two downsides I see at the moment are a) while Dorothy would likely respect Jacob’s thoughts on sex, she has a more pragmatic approach and they might be incompatible as a result; and b) two of her friends have/had crushes on him, making him generally off-limits by the college friend code until both are at least dating other people. But still, long game.

Frankly I don’t really think Dorky’s going to resail, at least not any time soon. Which, eh, fine. I think Walky needs to pull a Danny and NOT date for a little bit if/when the thing with Amber fizzles, and my concerns with Dorothy are settled so long as she has SOME regular social interactions. I do worry that after midterm results come out she’s going to throw herself into another crunch streak – pretty sure the reason she’s doing better now is because she finished that set of extra credit assignments she was working on. If her grades slip again, I don’t feel confident she WON’T fall back in that habit.
Dropping the “I love you” and “I’m well aware I’m in love with an idiot” bombs on a guy who, at the time, thought he was in a low-pressure relationship, and then as much as telling him “I can’t give you my whole heart” when he’s later responding on that level is kind of a shitty thing to do.
Dotty doesn’t strike me as deliberately manipulative, but that’s still emotionally manipulative behavior.
It. Is not. Dorothy staightforwardly told him the truth. Dorothy told her current feelings at the time and is now telling him her current feelings at the time. It isn’t manipulative to be honest. Dorothy can both have fallen in love with him AND decided ‘we are not suitable for each other even if it is tempting and fun’.
These aren’t mutually exclusive and it isn’t manipulative to admit your feelings or thoughts on something changed. It would be manipulative if she planned it or only said these things to get something/hurt someone but it’s not manipulation if these are your honest thoughts and feelings and you’re not saying them in a way to be purposefully spiteful/petty (a lot of guilt-trippy things said aren’t necessarily planned like you’d plan say a vacation but there is still a moment where they choose to do it in a spiteful way to make you feel guilty/regretful).
It wasn’t deliberately manipulative, but it’s not that straightforward either. It was showing a conflict in Dorothy between what she felt and what she thought she should do. Set up originally as far back as before their first kiss, when she tried to convince herself it would be a distraction that she didn’t have time for, then she went and kissed him anyway. Or the limits she put on the relationship, but then couldn’t stick to herself. Or eventually the pause, which was a lie. She acknowledges it when they break up.
Thinking a little more, I think the manipulation was more in the limits – using them to try to keep some distance, then ignoring them herself while Walky does a better job of sticking to them.
Now that I’ve thought about it some more, Amber and Walky’s relationship HAS been about living each day like their last. Dorothy and Walky may not work out, but this logic is reason enough that Amber and Walky will surely crash. I hope they realize this and honestly re-evaluate if their relationship is good, if they need to change themselves, or both.
I definitely had an Amber and Walky relationship once. Do not recommend. Things can get ugly fast.
Ever since I graduated university, got a job and my own place to live, I had nothing left to strive for. Sure, I could make my own projects, but I’m like Walky—I get bored easily. Everything I’ve worked for has been part of something external, never purely for my own sake. Getting a degree and a job were things I felt I had to do. So even with 40 mg of Prozac, it’s hard for me to stay happy and see a future for myself unless it’s been decided for me. Everything else feels vapid, so I’m inclined to do vapid things anyway.
But Dorothy says it’s pointless (though tempting) to live every day like it’s our last, because doing so means we think we can’t make our own future. That struck a chord with me because it reaffirms what I already know but need to practice: no one else can decide how the rest of my life will play out. I gotta have faith in myself, plan ahead, hold myself to my own goals, etc. I hate it because I feel I often lack willpower or motivation, but I know it’s necessary for a fulfilling life, you know?
This is exactly me but without the prozac. Except, I get to the last bit about lacking motivation and willpower, feel the whole thing is too much hard work and go back to my games.
Dorothy, that wasn’t nigh death, that was barely death adjacent. Now what Amber and Joyce just went through was very close to Nigh Death, especially for Amber and her fathersperm donor. Ruth and the truck, that’s Nigh Death but she ruined it by not resurrecting and walking away from the wreck.
I would say being kidnapped by a man who threatened to kill you and actually DID kill someone in front of you more than qualifies as a brush with death?
Like sure others came closer but literally any of them could’ve ended up like Ross if things had gone even slightly more sideways
Opus, just because you and I have both gone sailing through the air after coming into contact with motor vehicles and survived to tell the tale doesn’t mean that this is the ONLY type of near-death experience out there, or that our experiences were more ‘legitimate’ than others. Since Dorothy and Amber were approached by an attacker with malice in his heart, a deadly weapon in hand, and a stated intent to use it (before Amber got Dorothy out of harm’s way by pushing her into the entryway and then jamming the doors with a book), I would call that a near-death experience. Just because she wasn’t stabbed/gashed and in danger of bleeding out or bear physical scars from the incident doesn’t mean that she still didn’t beat the Reaper – this time.
Also why is this comment addressed at Dorothy when it is Wally asserting that this was a near death experience in an effort to get Dorothy to give him another chance. Of course she’s going to carry on with it, she’s specifically saying it isn’t her first time in a situation like this, not “omg I went through so much trauma just now” – she’s saying she knows what her priorities are and isn’t going to obsess over what happened to the detriment of her life and future.
How much time presumably elapsed since the cops and EMTs arrived at the Lincoln house, and now?
Seems to me that it should be late afternoon at the earliest — assuming debriefing and medical & mental health attention for those involved, to say nothing of police interviews at the precinct and potential FBI involvement (assuming Blaine may be a known baddie in FBI files, and of course the DeSanto connection). How does one calmly walk away from a kidnapping and a murder?
Campus security should have been more on the ball too. They’re going to have a lot to answer for.
Oh, and where the hell is the Fox 59 news vehicle? Local reporters should have been en route even as Becky’s tweets were on the move, or at least monitoring police frequencies. Fire the assignment editor for incompetence.
Good thing this is a webcomic and not the genuine article. Everyone of these students would have pulled out and applied to other schools before dinner; as well as filed suit against the college, Blaine, Amber, the agency that manages rental of the Lincoln house and whatever shards remain of Ross’ estate.
Seriously though, how he managed to end up between two people devoting extreme levels of effort and discomfort to make themselves better people while he has traditionally and continuously put zero effort into himself on any level…
In both cases, he provided an outlet to the sides of those women that wanted to relax and stop working for a bit — for Dorothy, as a way of goofing off, and for Amber, as a way to accept her less-than-perfect aspects. The contrast was valuable to both of them.
if some dude pulled “are you sure you don’t regret dumping me” on me after we got out of a life-threatening hostage situation, i don’t think i’d be capable of dorothy’s nice, level-headed response, frankly.

Yeah, I’m inclined to agree. I’m not going to say that Dorothy is worth X points and Walky is worth X-50 points or something like that, because I believe that trying to assign a concrete, numeric value to how someone lives their life is wrong, but it’s very clear that the kind of life that would make each of them happy is very, VERY different. Walky does not have Dorothy’s drive and ambition; she’s the type of person who would spend her weekends networking and attending charity balls, while Walky would much prefer to just sleep in and then watch cartoons/engage in hanky panky till dinnertime. Ultimately, I think the kind of person who will make Dorothy most happy is someone equally as driven as her, somebody who will inspire both of them to ever-greater heights of accomplishment through friendly and mutual competition. Walky, meanwhile, would be happiest with somebody who’s kind, understanding and laid-back, who will be happy regardless of what the future holds, as long as she’ll be with him. (In this, ironically, he’s not that much different from Danny.)

I mean, Walky’s bitter about rejection, which definitely isn’t great in the moment. I’d say in *general*, neither of them are healthy people- Walky doesn’t make choices with concern for long-term repercussions and Dorothy’s a legit workaholic who’s concept of self-care is basically nonexistent in a way that’s, like gauraunteed to make her crash and burn. Meanwhile, Walky tends to see success as unattainable and give up instantly while Dorothy is *very* confident she can achieve her dreams but is irationally willing to destroy herself to get there.
Um, romantically she’s more reasonable tho. Walky’s not being a monster but he is coming off as pushy; altho she doesn’t seem to be upset by it. That… was a bit longer than it likely had to be

I like the analysis! I was more or less thinking about how right now he’s using the fact that they were both in a life threatening situation as an excuse to get back with his ex the day after grinding on another girl, while Dorothy who would probably very much enjoy boning a Walky, still rejected him because she doesn’t want to lead him on as she knows she’s not capable of investing in Walky the same way he would her right now. All while saying something positive and life affirming. Like I don’t believe in “leagues” but Dorothy is definitely out of Walky’s. Be better Walky!

Also I disagree that Walky tends to see success as unattainable and give up instantly. What happened to him is not unlike what happened to me in college. He was a kid who never had to try to excel in school until he got to college, so he never had to learn any of the tools to get himself to where he needed to be, and college is very much not set up to have the same kind of automatic support system of lower grades, which means his denial is leading him on a path for failure that will have no external intervention until it’s forced on him (fails the class and his parents find out, say). I don’t think that means he thinks success is unattainable, I think he just had absolutely no roadmap on how to get there, and the directions he’s been given from others make no sense to him, because he doesn’t know how to drive a car, he’s always just teleported to his destination before.
Relationships are not DBZ, and there aren’t power levels or something. It’d be a lot easier if it even remotely worked like that.

I think it’s better to say Dorothy is more mature than Walky in many ways. Or even that they’re not suited to each other because of their personality types.i don’t like using “out of someone’s league” because it can be misused to mean physical attractiveness or social status.
Doesn’t it just mean that they are standing about 3.3 miles apart? I mean in Land Leagues, not Nautical Leagues. Oh, you’re right! This social standing around will soon lead to engaging in social intercourse. Not what either of them needs ATM.
I see it as something that’s really problematic for the future, but what they both need at the moment. Dorothy is better at living partially in the future while Walky lives more in the present. Time binding, and living partially in the future is a valuable skill, but the thing about the future is that you have to make it through the present to get there.
She’s more mature than him to be sure, but I don’t think that they’re unsuited to each other. I actually think that were Walky more mature they’d be almost perfectly suited to each other. They have some very complementary strengths and weaknesses.

I would bet she can meet love one day, but her personal happiness and that of every women and men shouldn’t depend on finding a lover. It’s a big mistake to think that everyone will find their “soul mate”. Some people are happy just doing what they like.
The problem is that Dorothy *isn’t* happy. A lot of her compromises she’s made have already shown themselves to be bad for her, like how she burns her candle at both ends.
Even if Walky weren’t part of the juggling act, I don’t think she could have gotten through this year without hitting a wall. Walky just kinda helped expose the cracks earlier, in a sentence that sounds way dirtier than intended.
Yeaaaah, Dorothy burning out is pretty much inevitable, Walky or no – the way she cuts leisure time as superfluous and unimportant if her academic work is suffering, and how she’ll neglect everything for crunch? Both of those are VERY BAD for her in the long run. (Not just in the ‘this will eventually cause health problems’ level, your brain just can’t sustain that.) Honestly I think having dated Walky actually put off her burnout for a bit.
Dorothy doesn’t NEED a relationship to be happy, no. She DOES need breaks from her work, academic or volunteering, and those lowkey cartoon dates with Walky were a good thing in that respect. (Granted, I had a depressive burn out and not just a straight overwork one, but even in a good mental health state my energy’s still not back to where it was before the successive depressive episodes since 2013.)

Except it’s been pretty clear that she did want a boyfriend or at least she enjoyed having one. She’s been shown struggling with herself from the start – torn between her emotional needs and her calculated plans. Her initial comments about not needing the “distraction” and various attempts to limit the nature of the relationship – limits she kept breaking.
Potential boyfriends may still exist in a few years, but relationships don’t get any easier or less time consuming after college, nor does a workaholic building an ambitious career likely have more free time for such distractions.
I’m not fond of the trope that ambitious women have to avoid relationships to be successful and it seems that’s what’s being established here. I don’t think that’s the intent, but her apparent quick recovery after breaking up with Walky points that way. I do suspect we’ll circle back around to that at some point, whether with Walky or someone else. Enough’s been set up as a conflict for her that I think it will be explored eventually.

I don’t know where you’re getting the trope from. I do not deny it’s existence and the troubles it poses, but as far as Dorothy is concerned, claiming a 19 years old college student is filling up a woman-in-power quota is… a stretch. Plus, you’re assuming she is never again in her life going to try a relationship. She doesn’t/didn’t have time for a boyfriend now, and while it doesn’t get any easier, her priorites can and will change over the course of her life. Not wanting a relationship now, for reasons of keeping a better mental health is a good and valid choice, and this past (in-comic) week has proven it did wonders for her. And lest we forget, while the trope is damaging, not having a relationship is not, in fact, a scar on womanhood. Some women simply don’t want them.
I also do not appreciate this extreme aversion y’all seem to be having about her schedule. Us ADHD people benefit a lot from schedules and having a minute-by-minute one did me absolute wonders in high school. Her current schedule seems to actually be helping her get a healthier lifestyle.

With a side of her not treating him fairly because she kept trying to put limits on the relationship and then not being able to stick to them herself.
As for the trope: she’s the ambitious woman in this comic – pretty much the only main character with big goals. Part of her character conflict has been from the start the work/life balance thing. Especially her need for a relationship conflicting with her goals. Currently that seems to have been resolved with “Forget the relationships, stick to the plan”. If she didn’t want a relationship, that wouldn’t be a conflict. She could simply be uninterested. She’s not. Since it’s been made a conflict and apparently resolved by giving up the relationship, it’s a clear example of the trope.
I do think it’s not actually resolved and she’ll get involved again, either with Walky or someone else and she will have to grow and find a better solution. Which will not, to be clear, be giving up on her ambitions.
Not quite the only character with big goals. Sarah wants to be a lawyer, and got raked over the coals pretty thoroughly by the comments section for not sacrificing her scholarship to play personal therapist to Dana.
Nobody, including Dorothy, is saying she doesn’t feel romantic or sexual attraction. Being horny does not mean she wants a boyfriend RIGHT NOW, anymore than my being sleepy means I want to go back to bed. Sure, on one level I do, but I have other shit that I want to get done which I’m willing to resist my immediate bodily urges to accomplish
She has repeatedly emphasized how much her long term goals matter to her and her people keep acting like shit like this means she’s wrong about her own wants and it’s CREEPY. Especially since sexual urges can be alleviated in a much more time efficient way by a little thing called masturbation. It’s even easier than casual sex and a vibrator’s feelings won’t be hurt when she doesn’t have time for it
It honestly seems to me that the situation is basically understood pretty well by most of us- Dorothy doesn’t want to date Walky (she’s got other priorities) and Walky should probably move on; but breaking up with Walky might or might not actually make those goals achievable- we don’t know Dorothy’s upper limits, and honestly neither does she, so there’s a chance she might need to dial back an extracurricular or two as well.
I think the cognitive wiggle-wobble that effects a lot of readers comes from a mixture of liking/disliking a certain ship, character loyalty (Walky!stans don’t want his worries about being a liability to be basically confirmed by narrative; Dorothy!peeps don’t want dorothy to be “punished” for the narrative for breaking up with him) and the fact that some *audiences members* think of romantic pursuits as more valuable than career pursuits in their own lives (I’m one of those!), and kind of project the anxieties surrounding that onto this relationship (I try not to do that tho). It’s an ending that makes a lot of logical sense, but because of the tropes we’ve been saturated with IRL and the emotions we might sympathize with more- I.E, Dorothy’s or Walkys, depending on our goals- it only makes emotional sense for like half the fandom, and therefore takes more work to accept.
I think it’s kind of lousy to reduce their relationship to just her being horny and Walky to just an inconvenient vibrator.

Playing the long, loooong game here, but maybe what Dorothy needs is someone like Jacob? Conscientious, appropriately but not hyper ambitious, with a mellow side that might offset the manic stuff. The only two downsides I see at the moment are a) while Dorothy would likely respect Jacob’s thoughts on sex, she has a more pragmatic approach and they might be incompatible as a result; and b) two of her friends have/had crushes on him, making him generally off-limits by the college friend code until both are at least dating other people. But still, long game.

Frankly I don’t really think Dorky’s going to resail, at least not any time soon. Which, eh, fine. I think Walky needs to pull a Danny and NOT date for a little bit if/when the thing with Amber fizzles, and my concerns with Dorothy are settled so long as she has SOME regular social interactions. I do worry that after midterm results come out she’s going to throw herself into another crunch streak – pretty sure the reason she’s doing better now is because she finished that set of extra credit assignments she was working on. It. Is not. Dorothy staightforwardly told him the truth. Dorothy told her current feelings at the time and is now telling him her current feelings at the time. It isn’t manipulative to be honest. Dorothy can both have fallen in love with him AND decided ‘we are not suitable for each other even if it is tempting and fun’.
These aren’t mutually exclusive and it isn’t manipulative to admit your feelings or thoughts on something changed. It would be manipulative if she planned it or only said these things to get something/hurt someone but it’s not manipulation if these are your honest thoughts and feelings and you’re not saying them in a way to be purposefully spiteful/petty (a lot of guilt-trippy things said aren’t necessarily planned like you’d plan say a vacation but there is still a moment where they choose to do it in a spiteful way to make you feel guilty/regretful).
It wasn’t deliberately manipulative, but it’s not that straightforward either. It was showing a conflict in Dorothy between what she felt and what she thought she should do. Set up originally as far back as before their first kiss, when she tried to convince herself it would be a distraction that she didn’t have time for, then she went and kissed him anyway. Or the limits she put on the relationship, but then couldn’t stick to herself. Or eventually the pause, which was a lie.
She acknowledges it when they break up.
Thinking a little more, I think the manipulation was more in the limits – using them to try to keep some distance, then ignoring them herself while Walky does a better job of sticking to them.

Real talk: Dorothy’s words are a big help.
Ever since I graduated university, got a job and my own place to live, I had nothing left to strive for. Sure, I could make my own projects, but I’m like Walky—I get bored easily. Everything I’ve worked for has been part of something external, never purely for my own sake. Getting a degree and a job were things I felt I had to do. So even with 40 mg of Prozac, it’s hard for me to stay happy and see a future for myself unless it’s been decided for me. Everything else feels vapid, so I’m inclined to do vapid things anyway.
But Dorothy says it’s pointless (though tempting) to live every day like it’s our last, because doing so means we think we can’t make our own future. That struck a chord with me because it reaffirms what I already know but need to practice: no one else can decide how the rest of my life will play out. I gotta have faith in myself, plan ahead, hold myself to my own goals, etc. I hate it because I feel I often lack willpower or motivation, but I know it’s necessary for a fulfilling life, you know?
This is exactly me but without the prozac. Except, I get to the last bit about lacking motivation and willpower, feel the whole thing is too much hard work and go back to my games.

Since Dorothy and Amber were approached by an attacker with malice in his heart, a deadly weapon in hand, and a stated intent to use it (before Amber got Dorothy out of harm’s way by pushing her into the entryway and then jamming the doors with a book), I would call that a near-death experience. Just because she wasn’t stabbed/gashed and in danger of bleeding out or bear physical scars from the incident doesn’t mean that she still didn’t beat the Reaper – this time.
Also why is this comment addressed at Dorothy when it is Wally asserting that this was a near death experience in an effort to get Dorothy to give him another chance. Of course she’s going to carry on with it, she’s specifically saying it isn’t her first time in a situation like this, not “omg I went through so much trauma just now” – she’s saying she knows what her priorities are and isn’t going to obsess over what happened to the detriment of her life and future.

How much time presumably elapsed since the cops and EMTs arrived at the Lincoln house, and now?
Seems to me that it should be late afternoon at the earliest — assuming debriefing and medical & mental health attention for those involved, to say nothing of police interviews at the precinct and potential FBI involvement (assuming Blaine may be a known baddie in FBI files, and of course the DeSanto connection). How does one calmly walk away from a kidnapping and a murder?
Campus security should have been more on the ball too. They’re going to have a lot to answer for.

Good thing this is a webcomic and not the genuine article. Everyone of these students would have pulled out and applied to other schools before dinner; as well as filed suit against the college, Blaine, Amber, the agency that manages rental of the Lincoln house and whatever shards remain of Ross’ estate.

I think you fail to take into account that his butt is very round.
In both cases, he provided an outlet to the sides of those women that wanted to relax and stop working for a bit — for Dorothy, as a way of goofing off, and for Amber, as a way to accept her less-than-perfect aspects. The contrast was valuable to both of them.
… though, yes, it is aggravating to watch.
if some dude pulled “are you sure you don’t regret dumping me” on me after we got out of a life-threatening hostage situation, i don’t think i’d be capable of dorothy’s nice, level-headed response, frankly.
