I’d love it if it was actually stocked for once so I could actually try it and form a proper opinion of it.. but heck, our local stores didn’t even carry it to begin with [during the promotions] nevermind having the chance to all-too-readily run out of stock of it. Alas.
Walky is also parroting back the words of someone who Joyce does NOT consider a friend who was giving out unsolicited (psycho)analysis and Walky SAW those words were a pain point and he KEEPS USING THEM. Walky needs to learn the signs that differentiate between ‘my playful ribbing is being perhaps just-barely tolerated’ and ‘in trying to be friendly, I am stabbing my friend with word-shivs”.
Well, you’re in luck- apparently change is easier to swallow than admitting who we’ve been all along, so Walky should be changing from being an immature nuisance aaaaany moment now. Just keep an eye out for the signs which would differentiate it. ^.^
Teasing aside, keep in mind that Walky is someone who has thrown toys at girls as a sign of affection within the past few months and, Joyce isn’t really Walky’s friend, just someone he has a proximity-derived interest in [eg, due to their shared relations with Dorothy, for example]. In other words, if we’re assuming affection of any sort, then it’s natural he’s teasing her “because. he. likes. her.”. It’d be less natural, given his established personality, for him to NOT be behaving like a pain as a way of showing his affections.
Rather, if we want to be more straightforward about it.. For Walky, I get the feeling that he’s an annoyance to everyone he has interest [not necessarily romantic] in, including his sister, comitted love interests, etc. So it wouldn’t matter if he viewed her as a friend, to begin with. :S
I doubt if Walky saw that those words had any real effect on Joyce. Walky has no real way of knowing about her struggles with her religion. We don’t even know if he could see her facial expression. He was standing against the wall behind where she was seated. Most likely Walky believes those words didn’t have any more effect than the other little jabs Booster tossed around the room.

Dude contacts are waaaaaaay easier than that nightmare air puff. The air puff is unexpected, and out of your control. Your finger with a contact lens on it moves entirely predictably, because it is your finger, attached to your body, moving under your own control. Plus it’s way slower, so there’s less reason to flinch.

I don’t give a single flying feather off a winged rat soring through the sky with a JATO unit tied to its tail about how okay any given poster is with it: The CONCEPT of poking one’s self in the eye is offputting to some. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Joyce has decided that while she HATE HATEHATES that she is going to be wearing glasses, she would LOATHELOATHELOATE LOATHE LOATHELOATHE poking herself in the eye.
This is me speaking from semi-personal experience. I LIKED my glasses at age 6, and couldn’t understand why anyone would WANT to poke themselves in the eye and risk ending up with one stuck under their eyelid like what happened to Mommy that day dad picked me up from kindergarten instead. (she’s fine now. it just floated for reasons I can’t recall because it was nearly three decades ago.)
It’d be insanely offputting to someone like Joyce, no doubt.
That said, as an add-on note, many of us can’t wear contacts to begin with, due to overly sensitive eyes or similar. Nevermind that modern glasses (with even the few remaining glass lenses being fairly resistant to shattering) are incredibly safe even with unexpected physical encounters, while contacts have a slew of potential issues associated with them.
I mean, health risks aside, there’s the simple risk of simply just LOSING them. Hollywood tropes aside, I had a solid handful of classmates who actually did pull the “Wait! Everyone wait! I lost a contact!” routine over my years of schooling. To continue the troping references, you’re most likely to lose your glasses on your own head than anywhere else.

I’m fully aware of that [ugh, unfortunately], I’m just noting that’s a seperate consideration relative to glasses vs contacts, with the latter being far easier to misplace (due to size, lack of non-transparent aspects [unless you’re going colored lenses], and general tendency to run off on you) .
How bad is Joyce’s near-sightedness? I wear glasses while driving, watching TV, and certainly I would if I needed to see the front of the classroom, but usually they stay in my purse. I also can’t stand wearing them if I’m eating, but that may just be me.
Close proximity vision is about an arm-length away from your body. After that point you start getting a more substantial effect from astigmatisms or basic poor vision. Thus, the addition of reading glasses or the removal of standard glasses generally kicks in at that range.
In other words, those who wear glasses generally only take them off when doing something like reading (unless they’re the sort to hold a book a fair bit away, on their lap or similar) [as an opposite consideration to those who are far-sighted and only wear glasses FOR reading], as they’ll have better vision with glasses for any other purpose.
In summary, I think it’s just your own personal disinclination towards wearing glasses that accounts for your habits in that regard.
As far as Joyce’s vision goes.. wow, that’s a tough one. Even with a severe astigmatism and severe near-sightendness, you can still differentiate colors just fine, as that’s another issue altogether. Meaning her not seeing the fountain earlier- if taken as a serious comment- is.. worrisome. I’d be more worried about a severe impairment like glaucoma at that point.
Beyond that, we don’t have much to work with, other than the fact that she struggles to read the board or see people at a distance. Going off that, she’s probably in “the usual range”, where she can function without them but everything is somewhat blurry outside of close proximity.
In your case, since your needs aren’t overriding your disinclination, I’d actually assume you’ve only a fairly mild issue, relative to most eyeglass wearers [that I’ve known]. Personally, I’ll make sure to wear glasses just for things like playing video games (always sit a proper distance from the screen, folks!) or taking my fluffball for a walk, just so I can clearly distinguish any details that may be relevant (or dangerous). Conversely, I don’t feel any real need to wear them when going on a walk by myself, since I can still clearly distinguish everything other than fine details. It’s still better that I do wear them, since my astigmatisms kinda ruin the aesthetics of things and my vision is bad enough that I can’t, say, clearly read smaller, badly fonted price tags at a store from across a wide aisle, but it’s not like I really need them. It’s just a clear advantage if I do wear them, minor as it may be in some cases.

Which probably means four days of back and forth with the lab using the USPS, plus an hour for the lab to make your lenses, and a few more days of buffer so that they’re not “late” due to things outside their control, like USPS.
I’m looking forward to the day I get out of the shower, and my bathroom informs me that my new glasses are printing and will be ready by the time I’m done with my breakfast, having tested my vision through the vanity mirror while I was brushing my teeth.
She was at least semifunctional without glasses, so her prescription probably isn’t all that extreme. If she didn’t go for any fancy extras, it’s entirely possible they made them on-site, same day. There’s a Lenscrafters store (Glasses in about an hour!) in Bloomington; I looked it up. I’m also assuming Joyce is just nearsighted, so her lenses would be much simpler and easier to grind than yours.
Legally blind people are “at least semifunctional without glasses”. If she’s managed to dodge the eye exam for a few years, she may have just developed coping mechanisms that hid her growing need for glasses from everyone, including herself. Clearly, one of those coping mechanisms has been to NOT sit on the back row in classes.
Compare the number of older people who suddenly can’t hear well because most everyone (responsible) is suddenly covering their mouth with a piece of cloth or 3-ply tissue paper when they speak.
Yes, I have been compensating for my deteriorating hearing by apparently getting good at lip reading, according to my audiologist. So with all the mask use, my crutch is gone, and now my hearing loss is becoming very noticeable.
I’ve severe astigmatisms and I can get glasses made at my optomitrist within like a half hour. It’s nothing I haven’t been able to just sit in the office for, anyway.
Rather, even as a child, I noticed the trend (as far as speed went relative to other places) was more based in the approach of the optomitrist specifically.
By my experiences it’s the [better] ones who see few patients are fast, as are lower end ones (eg, Lenscrafters) which are designed to quickly process things. It’s just the ones in-beteween that are the issue, since they try to maximize quantity of patients while not also streamlining the glass preperation.
But yeah- even the less efficient ones seem to be able to make glasses within a day now, unless you like, come in right at closing. I think that may just be more on your circumstances than anything. :S
*Oh, and you do still have to spend more time if you’ve the thick “bottle” glasses, since those require special lenses. I think the thing with astigmatisms is, they’ve gotten a lot better with streamlining those into standard lenses over recent years, so they don’t really meaningfully impact the construction delay anymore. Maybe your provider is using an outdated machine or something? o.O
Yeah, I’m one of those people who need high index lenses. That are made of plastic, because my eyesight is SO bad that, if I used conventional glass, my glasses would probably weigh close to 250g. I declined getting LASIK surgery because, aside from the fact that I’m VERY squeamish about the idea of letting lasers near my eyes, my eyesight is bad enough that I’d STILL need glasses even after the surgery. I figured I might as well skip the surgery in that case.

Honestly I don’t think that’s what she needs right now at all. Everyone saying she looks great with the glasses and that they don’t see her any differently and there’s nothing to worry about would just further confirm her fears that she really is a glasses person and can’t go back, and it would just seem like everyone is ignoring all of her concerns that are totally rational and serious to her. Maybe it’s just me, but I would want someone to acknowledge my concerns and say that yes, it does kinda suck that you have to wear glasses now even though you don’t want to wear glasses. It would make it feel less like something’s changed about me and more like I’ve just been hit with some sucky uncontrollable circumstances that I’m gonna have to push through. I think that would make it a lot easier to get used to them in the end. But maybe I’m dumb and this doesn’t actually make any sense idk.

I’m still a little peeved by this Booster line Walky’s been quoting. Maybe I don’t understand it. If change was so easy for Joyce to accept shouldn’t she be more open to wearing glasses? That’s a change in her life right? How do we know she’s always been a person who needed glasses? This is a very recent development.
This is really confusing to me. Is she changing into a person who needs glasses or was she always aware she was a person who needed glasses and doesn’t want to admit it?

Oh totally. Booster hasn’t made the best impression on me. They’ve been a bit douchey with the “reading” of people, and being a bit too blunt about it for polite company.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a short storyline about having trouble connecting with other people somewhere down the line.

I think it’s a little of both. She is very resistant to this because of al the changes that have happened. Parent divorce, best friend is gay, church is probably evil, religion might not matter to me…ect. All in just one semester.
But also when she was talking to Dorothy she did seem to really detest the idea of wearing glasses. I do think part of that is genuine disdain for the eyewear or the idea of being seen wearing it.
Glasses are forcing her to accept, openly, that she is not exactly the same as she was a year ago.
She doesn’t want to be a different person. She doesn’t want to wear this scarlet le obvious sign of her change for all to see and know.
She wants to be her old self. To herself and everyone around her.
Suddenly wearing glasses is forcing her to face the reality that she has changed, and in ways that are visible to others.

Normally what you say would be true, but the responsible person in the Witness Protection Program had to actually deal with Mike for awhile and made other choices.
If it’s Walky’s current ambition to be banned from the girls dorms because he’s been harassing Joyce, then he’s well on track to achieving it.
The more I read Joyce’s reaction, the more I’m sure that there’s a deeper problem here. Has she been told that she is less attractive with glasses or something?
I think attractiveness is definitely not one of the possible concerns it could be for Joyce personally, that’s more a Billie issue than a Joyce one. I listed a few reasons why she could be reacting so hard a while back and other people have also commented them such as:
1) Don’t want more similarities to family members she is less fond of now because you know, the trauma (even if good ones she still likes and people she likes also wear them, that’s not the point, there’s still that internal cringe at being more like someone you don’t want to be like at all).
2) Another change to her life and concept of her sense of self, not enough adjustment time and emotional resources to handle all of them. Her emotions were already up at 59 before this because of the other things she isn’t willing to fully accept yet such as being an atheist and other things out of her control like her parents divorcing.
3) Decreases feelings of uniqueness in her own personal family. This can seem silly from the outside, but within your own personal family it feels like everyone HAS to have their own niche to a degree. Even if there is overlap, there have to be identifiers, you know? And Joyce’s within her family have been ‘being the only daughter and not having glasses or eye correction at all’. And we know she is going to lose that first one too and just doesn’t know it yet. And even if it changes relatively nothing, it would still feel like losing a piece of yourself rather than replacing it with something else.
And a reason I know I’ve brought up but not seen anyone else bring up yet:
4) Joyce may currently feel the glasses impose new limitations and hassles on her and she didn’t want new limitations (this factors into feelings of loss of control as well). Now this might be a small cost for the freedom they give you to SEE THINGS WELL, but when say your emotions were already at 59, it certainly might not feel small that you now have to look after this THING on top of all the other PREEXISTING THINGS.
Like, this very much doesn’t feel like it is coming from rational logic, but emotional logic, and there are several areas of emotional logic that could be overlapping here. Glasses themselves as a concept aren’t that bad, but the emotional knots you can tie yourself into over them can be massive and tend not to stem from just not wanting to have glasses.
Also I like people that wear glasses, I think it’s cute?? I think Joyce is lashing out here more because it’s another change in her life that she probably didn’t need right now
I seriously think they’re two peas in a pod, and thus why I hate them both equally. Becky got a little better when she supported getting Joyce glasses in her Becky way. Walky just keeps getting worse.
I like the way Joyce’s glasses are rendered in profile today. Yesterday they kind of looked like just the outline of her eye traced in teal, but adding that gap sells the effect that they’re a separate object.
One time we ate BBQ at a really cheap roadside place, and we smelled like BBQ sauce the whole evening. That night, we woke up because hundreds of biting ants were crawling into our tent right through the screens. We drove half an hour to the nearest motel at 1AM and came back the next day to get our tent.
Walky in this strip might be as annoying as those ants.
They’re another stitch in Joyce’s overarching “I miss the predictable security of the way things were before even though everything else about it was terrible in retrospect” plot thread.

Which is not always a bad thing, one could argue that some of the comments about the storyline changes (mine especially) aren’t all that different to Joyce freaking out about changes
While tthink it’s Very Good that Sarah is talking to Joyce about her reactions (or trying to, fuck off walky) and hope that it gets Joyce to face her tendencies to project her big issues onto every other thing (seriously fuck off walky), I also think she could benefit from it being pointed out that the glasses aren’t stapled to re face and she can start by only wearing them when she really needs to see clearly, like in class or when driving.
She’s gotten around okay so far and easing into it could be easier for her to cope with the change.
My sister has been nearsighted and used glasses since she was 8 or so and still prefers to only wear them when she needs to because she’s used to her vision the way it is and finds it more comfortable. And her vision is POOR. But that’s what works for her and it’s her choice.
He’s also still verbally pulling on Joyce’s hair to get her to pay attention to him and it’s rapidly sliding from ‘endearing’ to ‘harassment’. I wouldn’t be surprising if Joyce complains in Ruth’s hearing and she bans him from the corridor.
Walky really needs to shut up and chill. He’s clearly hungry for attention but is being a huge pain in the ass about it. This isn’t endearing, it’s annoying and creeping into unintentional bullying at this point. I get his friend circle is unstable right now (roommate died, new roommate, old “friend” avoiding him, other changes) but this is just going to make things worse for himself down the line, or sooner if Joyce decides “You know what? I don’t need to sit next to Walky during classes. He’s a distracting annoyance that doesn’t do his work anyways.”
Walky is being such a dick at the moment that I wouldn’t mind seeing him run into the wrong guy at some point, hes that clueless a smack in the head might wake him up
I know it’s to make it look better, but the disconnect of Joyce’s glasses when her eyes are there on a side view looks really weird. Willis has probably always done it like that, but I never noticed cause they weren’t colored.
Every time I read a Joyce arc, I wonder why she looks like me (at that age), and acts like me, and has the same “I have to learn not to be a religious zealot, and admit what I’ve always felt” story as me. Like, Dave Willis, I know Joyce is you but… are you me?

And Joyce, yes, you have always been a “glasses person”. The hardest part is explaining to your non-glasses friends that you have always been a glasses person, and watching them just not get it, because they don’t respect people with glasses. The best part is finding love and acceptance from other glasses people. I mean, you know… “glasses”.

Teasing aside, keep in mind that Walky is someone who has thrown toys at girls as a sign of affection within the past few months and, Joyce isn’t really Walky’s friend, just someone he has a proximity-derived interest in [eg, due to their shared relations with Dorothy, for example]. In other words, if we’re assuming affection of any sort, then it’s natural he’s teasing her “because. he. likes. her.”. It’d be less natural, given his established personality, for him to NOT be behaving like a pain as a way of showing his affections.
Rather, if we want to be more straightforward about it.. For Walky, I get the feeling that he’s an annoyance to everyone he has interest [not necessarily romantic] in, including his sister, comitted love interests, etc. So it wouldn’t matter if he viewed her as a friend, to begin with. :S

Dude contacts are waaaaaaay easier than that nightmare air puff. The air puff is unexpected, and out of your control. Your finger with a contact lens on it moves entirely predictably, because it is your finger, attached to your body, moving under your own control. Plus it’s way slower, so there’s less reason to flinch.

(she’s fine now. it just floated for reasons I can’t recall because it was nearly three decades ago.)
It’d be insanely offputting to someone like Joyce, no doubt.
That said, as an add-on note, many of us can’t wear contacts to begin with, due to overly sensitive eyes or similar. Nevermind that modern glasses (with even the few remaining glass lenses being fairly resistant to shattering) are incredibly safe even with unexpected physical encounters, while contacts have a slew of potential issues associated with them.
I mean, health risks aside, there’s the simple risk of simply just LOSING them. Hollywood tropes aside, I had a solid handful of classmates who actually did pull the “Wait! Everyone wait! I lost a contact!” routine over my years of schooling. To continue the troping references, you’re most likely to lose your glasses on your own head than anywhere else.

How bad is Joyce’s near-sightedness? I wear glasses while driving, watching TV, and certainly I would if I needed to see the front of the classroom, but usually they stay in my purse. I also can’t stand wearing them if I’m eating, but that may just be me.
Close proximity vision is about an arm-length away from your body. After that point you start getting a more substantial effect from astigmatisms or basic poor vision. Thus, the addition of reading glasses or the removal of standard glasses generally kicks in at that range.
In other words, those who wear glasses generally only take them off when doing something like reading (unless they’re the sort to hold a book a fair bit away, on their lap or similar) [as an opposite consideration to those who are far-sighted and only wear glasses FOR reading], as they’ll have better vision with glasses for any other purpose.
In summary, I think it’s just your own personal disinclination towards wearing glasses that accounts for your habits in that regard.
As far as Joyce’s vision goes.. wow, that’s a tough one. Even with a severe astigmatism and severe near-sightendness, you can still differentiate colors just fine, as that’s another issue altogether. Meaning her not seeing the fountain earlier- if taken as a serious comment- is.. worrisome. I’d be more worried about a severe impairment like glaucoma at that point.
Beyond that, we don’t have much to work with, other than the fact that she struggles to read the board or see people at a distance. Going off that, she’s probably in “the usual range”, where she can function without them but everything is somewhat blurry outside of close proximity.
In your case, since your needs aren’t overriding your disinclination, I’d actually assume you’ve only a fairly mild issue, relative to most eyeglass wearers [that I’ve known]. Personally, I’ll make sure to wear glasses just for things like playing video games (always sit a proper distance from the screen, folks!) or taking my fluffball for a walk, just so I can clearly distinguish any details that may be relevant (or dangerous). Conversely, I don’t feel any real need to wear them when going on a walk by myself, since I can still clearly distinguish everything other than fine details. It’s still better that I do wear them, since my astigmatisms kinda ruin the aesthetics of things and my vision is bad enough that I can’t, say, clearly read smaller, badly fonted price tags at a store from across a wide aisle, but it’s not like I really need them. It’s just a clear advantage if I do wear them, minor as it may be in some cases.

I’m looking forward to the day I get out of the shower, and my bathroom informs me that my new glasses are printing and will be ready by the time I’m done with my breakfast, having tested my vision through the vanity mirror while I was brushing my teeth.
She was at least semifunctional without glasses, so her prescription probably isn’t all that extreme. If she didn’t go for any fancy extras, it’s entirely possible they made them on-site, same day. There’s a Lenscrafters store (Glasses in about an hour!) in Bloomington; I looked it up. I’m also assuming Joyce is just nearsighted, so her lenses would be much simpler and easier to grind than yours.
Legally blind people are “at least semifunctional without glasses”. If she’s managed to dodge the eye exam for a few years, she may have just developed coping mechanisms that hid her growing need for glasses from everyone, including herself. Clearly, one of those coping mechanisms has been to NOT sit on the back row in classes.
Compare the number of older people who suddenly can’t hear well because most everyone (responsible) is suddenly covering their mouth with a piece of cloth or 3-ply tissue paper when they speak.
Yes, I have been compensating for my deteriorating hearing by apparently getting good at lip reading, according to my audiologist. So with all the mask use, my crutch is gone, and now my hearing loss is becoming very noticeable.

There are places that can do glasses in an hour. Have been for several years actually.
I’ve severe astigmatisms and I can get glasses made at my optomitrist within like a half hour. It’s nothing I haven’t been able to just sit in the office for, anyway.
Rather, even as a child, I noticed the trend (as far as speed went relative to other places) was more based in the approach of the optomitrist specifically.
By my experiences it’s the [better] ones who see few patients are fast, as are lower end ones (eg, Lenscrafters) which are designed to quickly process things. It’s just the ones in-beteween that are the issue, since they try to maximize quantity of patients while not also streamlining the glass preperation.
But yeah- even the less efficient ones seem to be able to make glasses within a day now, unless you like, come in right at closing. I think that may just be more on your circumstances than anything. :S
*Oh, and you do still have to spend more time if you’ve the thick “bottle” glasses, since those require special lenses. I think the thing with astigmatisms is, they’ve gotten a lot better with streamlining those into standard lenses over recent years, so they don’t really meaningfully impact the construction delay anymore. Maybe your provider is using an outdated machine or something? o.O
Yeah, I’m one of those people who need high index lenses. That are made of plastic, because my eyesight is SO bad that, if I used conventional glass, my glasses would probably weigh close to 250g. I declined getting LASIK surgery because, aside from the fact that I’m VERY squeamish about the idea of letting lasers near my eyes, my eyesight is bad enough that I’d STILL need glasses even after the surgery. I figured I might as well skip the surgery in that case.
Just look forward to getting a new pair of cybernetic eyes in the future, I guess? :S

Honestly I don’t think that’s what she needs right now at all. Everyone saying she looks great with the glasses and that they don’t see her any differently and there’s nothing to worry about would just further confirm her fears that she really is a glasses person and can’t go back, and it would just seem like everyone is ignoring all of her concerns that are totally rational and serious to her. Maybe it’s just me, but I would want someone to acknowledge my concerns and say that yes, it does kinda suck that you have to wear glasses now even though you don’t want to wear glasses. It would make it feel less like something’s changed about me and more like I’ve just been hit with some sucky uncontrollable circumstances that I’m gonna have to push through. I think that would make it a lot easier to get used to them in the end. But maybe I’m dumb and this doesn’t actually make any sense idk.

I think it’s a little of both. She is very resistant to this because of al the changes that have happened. Parent divorce, best friend is gay, church is probably evil, religion might not matter to me…ect. All in just one semester.
But also when she was talking to Dorothy she did seem to really detest the idea of wearing glasses. I do think part of that is genuine disdain for the eyewear or the idea of being seen wearing it.

Honestly, now Walky’s pushing it. And I assure all Salt-N-Pepa fans he is not pushing it real good; he’s pushing it real bad.
If it’s Walky’s current ambition to be banned from the girls dorms because he’s been harassing Joyce, then he’s well on track to achieving it.
The more I read Joyce’s reaction, the more I’m sure that there’s a deeper problem here. Has she been told that she is less attractive with glasses or something?
I think attractiveness is definitely not one of the possible concerns it could be for Joyce personally, that’s more a Billie issue than a Joyce one. I listed a few reasons why she could be reacting so hard a while back and other people have also commented them such as:
1) Don’t want more similarities to family members she is less fond of now because you know, the trauma (even if good ones she still likes and people she likes also wear them, that’s not the point, there’s still that internal cringe at being more like someone you don’t want to be like at all).
2) Another change to her life and concept of her sense of self, not enough adjustment time and emotional resources to handle all of them. Her emotions were already up at 59 before this because of the other things she isn’t willing to fully accept yet such as being an atheist and other things out of her control like her parents divorcing.
3) Decreases feelings of uniqueness in her own personal family. This can seem silly from the outside, but within your own personal family it feels like everyone HAS to have their own niche to a degree. Even if there is overlap, there have to be identifiers, you know? And Joyce’s within her family have been ‘being the only daughter and not having glasses or eye correction at all’. And we know she is going to lose that first one too and just doesn’t know it yet. And even if it changes relatively nothing, it would still feel like losing a piece of yourself rather than replacing it with something else.
And a reason I know I’ve brought up but not seen anyone else bring up yet:
4) Joyce may currently feel the glasses impose new limitations and hassles on her and she didn’t want new limitations (this factors into feelings of loss of control as well). Now this might be a small cost for the freedom they give you to SEE THINGS WELL, but when say your emotions were already at 59, it certainly might not feel small that you now have to look after this THING on top of all the other PREEXISTING THINGS.
Like, this very much doesn’t feel like it is coming from rational logic, but emotional logic, and there are several areas of emotional logic that could be overlapping here. Glasses themselves as a concept aren’t that bad, but the emotional knots you can tie yourself into over them can be massive and tend not to stem from just not wanting to have glasses.
This analysis makes some sense.
I was leaning more into it being a loss of control issue, but I think you are onto something.

It’s a close race between Walky and Becky this book, really.
I seriously think they’re two peas in a pod, and thus why I hate them both equally. Becky got a little better when she supported getting Joyce glasses in her Becky way. Walky just keeps getting worse.
I like the way Joyce’s glasses are rendered in profile today. Yesterday they kind of looked like just the outline of her eye traced in teal, but adding that gap sells the effect that they’re a separate object.
There’s nothing wrong with being a glasses person. Especially since Joyce looks cute wearing glasses.
One time we ate BBQ at a really cheap roadside place, and we smelled like BBQ sauce the whole evening. That night, we woke up because hundreds of biting ants were crawling into our tent right through the screens. We drove half an hour to the nearest motel at 1AM and came back the next day to get our tent.
Walky in this strip might be as annoying as those ants.
Got to say the overall…I don’t know, tone maybe of the strip since the time jump has, to me, changed a fair bit
Becky and Walky have ramped up the annoying side of their personalities and Booster seems to be like Mike but without the charm
Joyce has been triggered by glasses (I’ve worn them since i was 14…should have had them earlier)
Hope this glasses storyline goes somewhere
They’re another stitch in Joyce’s overarching “I miss the predictable security of the way things were before even though everything else about it was terrible in retrospect” plot thread.
I dunno but it seems to me that the author is maybe trying something different this time around

Joyce needs to be hashing this out with Jocelyn, it would give her some perspective.
While tthink it’s Very Good that Sarah is talking to Joyce about her reactions (or trying to, fuck off walky) and hope that it gets Joyce to face her tendencies to project her big issues onto every other thing (seriously fuck off walky), I also think she could benefit from it being pointed out that the glasses aren’t stapled to re face and she can start by only wearing them when she really needs to see clearly, like in class or when driving.
She’s gotten around okay so far and easing into it could be easier for her to cope with the change.
My sister has been nearsighted and used glasses since she was 8 or so and still prefers to only wear them when she needs to because she’s used to her vision the way it is and finds it more comfortable. And her vision is POOR. But that’s what works for her and it’s her choice.

He’s also still verbally pulling on Joyce’s hair to get her to pay attention to him and it’s rapidly sliding from ‘endearing’ to ‘harassment’. I wouldn’t be surprising if Joyce complains in Ruth’s hearing and she bans him from the corridor.

Walky really needs to shut up and chill. He’s clearly hungry for attention but is being a huge pain in the ass about it. This isn’t endearing, it’s annoying and creeping into unintentional bullying at this point. I get his friend circle is unstable right now (roommate died, new roommate, old “friend” avoiding him, other changes) but this is just going to make things worse for himself down the line, or sooner if Joyce decides “You know what? I don’t need to sit next to Walky during classes. He’s a distracting annoyance that doesn’t do his work anyways.”

Every time I read a Joyce arc, I wonder why she looks like me (at that age), and acts like me, and has the same “I have to learn not to be a religious zealot, and admit what I’ve always felt” story as me. Like, Dave Willis, I know Joyce is you but… are you me?
Then again, I was always a (literal) glasses person. But I can still relate to the DON’T CHANGE ME DON’T CHANGE THINGS bit.
And Joyce, yes, you have always been a “glasses person”. The hardest part is explaining to your non-glasses friends that you have always been a glasses person, and watching them just not get it, because they don’t respect people with glasses. The best part is finding love and acceptance from other glasses people. I mean, you know… “glasses”.
