The worst thing i learned in the world of comics last year was that Mallard Fillmorehad enough brand recognition that when the hack who created it (Tinsley? I’m trying to forget) stopped drawing it, or was forced out, a new person was hired to take over the strip.
Usually, although some end because they’re a personal project of the author. The only one I can think of which was work-for-hire and actually ended was Apartment 3-G, and that had turned into such a mess that the syndicate just wanted to burn it.
(Disclaimer: Everything I know about American newspaper comic strips was learned from The Comics Curmugeon.)
or too specialized and the content becomes repetitive.
One syndicate runs on a five-year contract, so a lot are built around that timeframe if the cartoonist is smart enough to see that his/her work is borderline
I think he was arrested or got one too many DUIs or something. Unfortunately, Incredulous Anthropomorphic Republican Talking Duck will be with us forever. At least they got a competent artist who can kind-of ape Tinsley’s style and not somebody like the Dilbert guy.
(Now there’s a story of somebody getting high off their own supply. I used to read that strip before learning about the creator, now I just can’t. In retrospect, it shows in his work so we should’ve seen it coming…)
His DUIs were over a decade ago. It’s more likely that it’s him being told to back away because of the election and what how nasty it was going to turn out to be. He’s back doing them, and likely was doing storyboarding and oversight but not actually working on it. Either that or he was sick and couldn’t do the work.
I had a feeling this would happen, but like an idiot I didn’t make that prediction public, and now I’m robbed of gloating about having ‘told you so’ because I never actually told anyone so
Someone called it less than a week(ish) ago. Something about Joyce making a comic in twenty years. I did a fake math check (comic timeline of a couple of semesters => 2 decades). It turns out they were right(ish) in that it’s happening within 20 years. Ha!/Oi vey.
DoA is ten years old as a comic, so we seem to be one decade per (half- with a timeskip) semester.
Joyce’s inevitable descent into webcomics and eventually internet pornlordom has been a running gag since… well, at latest, sometime after Willis started describing himself as an Internet Pornlord because it’s a funny phrase and Joyce is incredibly repressed. I just don’t think any of us thought it might come true.
She’s autobiographical, but she isn’t a self-insert. Other characters are allowed to embody the author’s real-life thoughts and experiences. Someone was probably gonna do a comic in-universe, but it didn’t necessarily have to be Joyce. (That said, having it be Joyce is a fun idea, especially after the Whiteboard Ding-Dong incident.)
So is Walky … and Danny and Ethan and Dina and probably most of the other characters to a degree.
And if Joyce, Walky, Ethan and Dina team up to draw the newspaper comic, the end result is Beast Wars fanfic with anatomical correct dinosaurs.
we know Walky can draw stuff (Dinosaurs at least) – but we’ve never seen him write anything (besides parts of the Dexter&Monkeymaster-Wiki)
we know Joyce can write stuff (Julia Gray por.. eh.. stories) – but we’ve never seen her draw anything (besides increasingly accurate dingdongs)
Okay, but neither one of them needs the whole stack if they are being conscientious about the environment. Joyce can still let him have a few pages lol
Also at five dollars a strip the supplies for drawing on paper cuts dangerously into your profit margins. Your cheap college student income ass is already outsourcing for supplies. You’ll propably be submitting this digitally anyway so just download a free art app (I recommend Krita) and draw the thing on your laptop with your mouse, or hell even your smartphone. I don’t think you’re actually ready for the independent comic business Walks.
He should’ve just swiped paper out of a printer or Xerox machine in the library. (You gotta do what you gotta do when a ream of copy paper costs an entire day’s pay.)
Well Walky you’ve learnt a valuble lesson, if you take it on board that it. If you stumble on an opportunity you really want then keep it to yourself.
Interestingly I learnt this lesson at around the same time. I heard of a job down at the wool store on the wharf and I told a mate who came along, long story short one of us got the job and quit less than two weeks later
Destiny is a funny thing. I’m wondering if we’re about to see the birth of a strip comic that will last far beyond their college years into an unexpected adult career?
The Adventures of Julia Grey – Space Ace Art by David Walkerton. Scripts by Joyce Brown
So does everyone when they try something new. It’s part of the artistic process.
I deeply admire my 3rd Grade students, who are willing to throw themselves headfirst into new skills, getting things wrong over and over, brushing off their mistakes, and trying yet again…
If grownups would face failure that bravely, the whole world might be different.
Plot twist: he can’t write, she can’t draw, but together they’re unstoppable.
At least until Walky realizes splitting the check means he can only afford half as many vending machine Nachitos. (Joyce just goes to the grocery store instead.)
Ooh, Joyce should write a comic strip for the school newspaper about college students! It could have a pair of roommates where one of them is a sex-obsessed womanizer who also invents hoverboards, and the other one has a girlfriend in high school who is a year younger. And also they know another girl who’s always over-the-top happy and likes The Sound of Music and thinks she’s going to marry a guy who isn’t actually interested in her. Oh, and of course this over-the-top hyper happy girl has a roommate who is always bitter and miserable. And maybe throw a car crash in there somewhere?
Not sure what to call a comic like that. Maybe something like Roommates?
Maybe it will be about a bunch of college students who find themselves in an actual “Dexter and Monkey Master.” But with dinosaurs so Dina doesn’t feel left out.

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908.
"You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action

Nah.
It’d probably be Mary.
Oh god, I can just see it, Mallard Fillmore but everyone’s an anime character.
The worst thing i learned in the world of comics last year was that Mallard Fillmorehad enough brand recognition that when the hack who created it (Tinsley? I’m trying to forget) stopped drawing it, or was forced out, a new person was hired to take over the strip.
Isn’t that somewhat standard operative procedure?
Usually, although some end because they’re a personal project of the author. The only one I can think of which was work-for-hire and actually ended was Apartment 3-G, and that had turned into such a mess that the syndicate just wanted to burn it.
(Disclaimer: Everything I know about American newspaper comic strips was learned from The Comics Curmugeon.)
(And, thinking about it, I guess “personal project of the author” is something you’d expect to apply to Right-Wing Duck Comics.)
Some also likely end because they’re not profitable enough to go through the hassle.
or too specialized and the content becomes repetitive.
One syndicate runs on a five-year contract, so a lot are built around that timeframe if the cartoonist is smart enough to see that his/her work is borderline
Yes, for popular strips which people love, or enjoy, or at least don’t actively hate*. Ergo, Mallard Fecking Fillmore?
*That “don’t actively hate” drives newsprint comics is pretty sad, actually.
I think he was arrested or got one too many DUIs or something. Unfortunately, Incredulous Anthropomorphic Republican Talking Duck will be with us forever. At least they got a competent artist who can kind-of ape Tinsley’s style and not somebody like the Dilbert guy.

He’s back doing them, and likely was doing storyboarding and oversight but not actually working on it. Either that or he was sick and couldn’t do the work.
But it had nothing to do with the DUIs
Mallard Fillmore owes its entire existence to being the best right-wing cartoon out there. That’s a sad title to claim.
What happened to Bo?
oh god you reminded us of Ninja Rick xD

Of course you do, sweetie. Of course you do.
I had a feeling this would happen, but like an idiot I didn’t make that prediction public, and now I’m robbed of gloating about having ‘told you so’ because I never actually told anyone so
It’s fine, we believe you.
Someone called it less than a week(ish) ago. Something about Joyce making a comic in twenty years. I did a fake math check (comic timeline of a couple of semesters => 2 decades). It turns out they were right(ish) in that it’s happening within 20 years. Ha!/Oi vey.

I just don’t think any of us thought it might come true.
Phallady. Joyce identifies as female.
One of the hovertexts during the Whiteboard Ding-Dong Bandit arc described Joyce as a “future pornlord”, so the title seems to be gender-neutral.
Yup, this one https://www.dumbingofage.com/2014/comic/book-4/04-the-whiteboard-dong-bandit/cleaning/
Isn’t Joyce also based on Willis to a degree?
Guess a comic arc was inevitable due to that
She’s autobiographical, but she isn’t a self-insert.

This. Means. WARRRRR
Or, yanno, make Walky the artist and Joyce the writer, whatever works.
Something like that. At least the making out part.
sounds reasonable:
we know Walky can draw stuff (Dinosaurs at least) – but we’ve never seen him write anything (besides parts of the Dexter&Monkeymaster-Wiki)
we know Joyce can write stuff (Julia Gray por.. eh.. stories) – but we’ve never seen her draw anything (besides increasingly accurate dingdongs)
If you wanna beat the competition, don’t tell about the competition
I thought that was the second rule of Comix-Klub?
Aw, yay, the smile’s back!
Oh no, Sara’s joy!
As long as Sarah is elsewhere, she can be blissfully ignorant of Joyce’s happiness
Sara’s joy is safe, Joyce is draining it from Walky instead.
Yes, I’m happy with this turn of events.
I suspect the winner will be more determined by whoever appeals to Daisy’s particular editorial biases more.
“This Julia Gray character…can she have a chest window?”
Yes.
“What, no? That would be silly.
President Kleener on the other hand…”
“Is the Leather Jacket, Aviators, and unintentional homoerotic subtext between her and Doris Kenner not enough?”
Okay, but neither one of them needs the whole stack if they are being conscientious about the environment. Joyce can still let him have a few pages lol
Carla’s #1 Fan is Carla herself, right?
Yes! I’m glad someone caught that
Julia Gray – the comic
Ace pilot Julia Gray takes off on another excellent adventure!
No paper for you, nachito boy!
Daisy will demand that Julia’s romantic interest is a woman.
And then demand that Joyce draws their honeymoon.
In every. Single. Detail.
*plays ABBA’s “The Name of the Game” on the hacked Muzak*
What a twist!
Meanwhile in Dina’s room:
Sarah: I want to kick a puppy now.
I hope this ends up with them working together, getting to know each other even better and accidentally ending up together.
Okay, so Dinosaurs with Bow ties (maybe two can be a Lady Dinosaur with Bow ties, just for Daisy) vs Julia Gray.
Unfortunately for Joyce it will be rejected because of its name, Croomies.
Rookie mistake Walkman. You never reveal your insider knowledge before you’ve secured the deal.
Take a page from dinosaur comics. Draw it /once/ in MS Paint and then it’s only text bubbles forever more.
Yea, but that requires Ryan North to write a lot of text, which Walky might view as too much work.
Getting Ryan North to write a lot of text is probably still easier than doing it himself, though!
He should’ve just swiped paper out of a printer or Xerox machine in the library. (You gotta do what you gotta do when a ream of copy paper costs an entire day’s pay.)
First rule of exploiting an advantage: don’t blab!
Our chances of success are 100% as long as we don’t have to compete in the free marketplace!
And with that, Joyce has well and truly taken the autobiographical character title from Walky, once and for all.
(Plot twist: She mentions it to both Ethan and Danny, who ALSO decide to throw their hats into the ring.)
Was going to say the same thing, it’s all come full circle!
Though I guess she’s had the anti-fundamentalist epiphany BEFORE the comic strip gig, so a little bit cart-before-the-horse but whatever.
Just watch the two of them end up collaborating on a comic about everyday freshman college life. They could call the strip…
…Walky & Joyce?
Calloborate? And split the already insulting wage of 5 bucks a strip in half?!
Walky’s gonna have to settle on store brand Nachitos.
I guess the collaboration will go more in the direction of “Nightguy vs. Julia Gray: Dawn of Something or Other”
Now I wonder, is this event auto-biographical? And if so, who is Willis? Joyce or Walky?
Chances are probably just two different aspects of Willis battling for Supremacy.
Roomies was done while Willis was in school, I think, so sorta?
A CHALLENGER APPEARS
PLAYER 2 HAS ENTERED THE GAME
Walky vs. Joyce: Who Will Be The Most Autobiographical Today?
Real Gs move in silence like lasagna.
So, G(arfield)s?
Well Walky you’ve learnt a valuble lesson, if you take it on board that it. If you stumble on an opportunity you really want then keep it to yourself.
Interestingly I learnt this lesson at around the same time. I heard of a job down at the wool store on the wharf and I told a mate who came along, long story short one of us got the job and quit less than two weeks later
Surprise surprise it wasn’t me…
Sarah just tripped on a brick.
The energies are shifting and she doesn’t know why
Joyce becomes more and more auto-biographical.
I’m just glad its Joyce and not Walky
Destiny is a funny thing. I’m wondering if we’re about to see the birth of a strip comic that will last far beyond their college years into an unexpected adult career?
The Adventures of Julia Grey – Space Ace
Art by David Walkerton. Scripts by Joyce Brown
I bet they both suck at this lmao
So did Willis, at first
So does everyone when they try something new. It’s part of the artistic process.
I deeply admire my 3rd Grade students, who are willing to throw themselves headfirst into new skills, getting things wrong over and over, brushing off their mistakes, and trying yet again…
If grownups would face failure that bravely, the whole world might be different.
I’m rooting for you to win the gig, Joyce!
“and now I can see what I draw”
This made me laugh!
Fine, I’m calling it.
Mary will do the comic
That’s the most evil thing I’ve heard since Jan. 20th.
“Mary, we have to drop you. We’re getting complaints that all the characters look the same to the point they’re completely indistinguishable.”
“And why are all your characters generic anime guys weeping before the anime crucifixion?”
“The New Adventures of the Dingdong Bandit. Episode 1: One night in Bangkok.”
One night in Bangdingdong.
“Episode 2: I don’t know him so well.”
(Any other members of the Chess cult here?)
Ep3: Creme De La Creme Of The Chess World In A Show With Everything But Some Old Actor I Don’t Know
The London version or the Broadway version? Choose wisely. There is only one correct answer.
London, of course.
Though I do like Someone Else’s Story from the Broadway version.
Both author inserts* are competing to draw a comic strip? Wonder which side will win!
*Don’t mean this in a negative connotation-y way, just a little too sleepy to figure out if that’s the proper phrase
He tucked up not going to Amber first. The other two would have also most likely try to steal his job in addition to an unpleasant conversation.
They could team up to draw ‘Joyce & Walky’.
Plot twist: he can’t write, she can’t draw, but together they’re unstoppable.
At least until Walky realizes splitting the check means he can only afford half as many vending machine Nachitos. (Joyce just goes to the grocery store instead.)
I am not sure if I want a rivalry more or them deciding to team up.
Maybe some pairings are inevitably? In this universe, Walky and Joyce being a husband-and-wife team with Joyce doing the scrips and Walky the art?
Willis ain’t treading over husband and wife Walky and Joyce again
Walky channelling hedge funders in that last panel there.
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far down to find someone saying this
And so it begins.
(Is this a DoA origin story?)
It’s a heavily-fictionalised version of Willis’s life-story, yes.
Interesting contest.
Walky, to ensure your success, you need do only one thing – NOT TELL ANYONE!!
Yeah, it was doomed to failure.
*autobiographing intensifies*
I hope they’re both terrible at it.
Joyce is going to make 9 chickweed lane, isn’t she?
But instead of legs, it’s chests everywhere.
They should team up, and work on it together.
Ooh, Joyce should write a comic strip for the school newspaper about college students! It could have a pair of roommates where one of them is a sex-obsessed womanizer who also invents hoverboards, and the other one has a girlfriend in high school who is a year younger. Oh, and of course this over-the-top hyper happy girl has a roommate who is always bitter and miserable. And maybe throw a car crash in there somewhere?
Not sure what to call a comic like that. Maybe something like Roommates?
And it could morph over time into a more science-fiction-y, superhero-y series. Or would that be too much of a stretch?
Maybe it will be about a bunch of college students who find themselves in an actual “Dexter and Monkey Master.” But with dinosaurs so Dina doesn’t feel left out.
Joyce writes a comic that gets spun off in a comic so you have a comic that’s a comic in another comic
(I don’t know why but it’s funny to me)
I’m loving everybody’s new hair but especially Walky’s, Sarah’s, and Becky’s. Oh and Bil- whatever, everybody’s new hair.
Walky doesn’t stand a chance. If there’s any force more powerful than Sweatervest Joyce, it’s Denimvest Joyce.
Yep, that would be me. I’d need zero competition too.
I wish the university newspapers I used to read had comic strips…
Newspaper is probably dying for filler, so tecnically both could
