Someone get Outrider a copy of Heinlein’s “Stranger in a Strange Land” STAT!
(or just click that wiki entry for the book and scroll down to “Literary significance and criticism”)
Everyone should read this book- it is one of the most unintentionally hilarious stories you will ever comprehend with absolute completeness of understanding.
There need to be more college courses based on analyzing deliberately transgressive literary works of a bygone era; it is a fascinating field of anthropological study to dissect the things that sent people of the past into screaming shit-fits.
Unintentionally hilarious? Personally, I think it’s *still* transgressive – though not necessarily about the stuff that people would’ve made a big of when it was published. (And still awesome.)
Sorry. I just realized when I posted my own link that hyperlinks are not immediately apparent on this site. (Gravatar’s fault?) I only see a link if I happen to move my mouse over the text.
Probably WordPress, not Gravatar…which I think just provides the avatar service.
And, no need to apologize, I wasn’t criticizing you, just pointing out the miss-able link, for the ‘Grok’s a big deal and not an obscure reference’ point. Sorry if I came across as critical.
Y’know, having only come into the so-called “Walkyverse” via Shortpacked! and having read nothing else by Willis (other than some TFWiki stuff), I’m haiving a hard time caring about DoA right now. There’s just no story or humor. Nothing is happening. I get that all the long term fans are being entertained by how Elseworlds-y this is, but I’d say there’s a significant portion of us latecomers who aren’t willing to archive binge Roomies! or It’s Walky! for whom DoA is currently really, really dull. And as it’s indirectly affected the Shortpacked! schedule (Joyce and Walky! getting finished so Doa can achieve it’s full glory has cost two SP! strips this week.)
I know I get a glazed look when commenter talk about SEMME, Resurrections and super strength under Shortpacked! strips, but at least I don’t NEED to get those references to enjoy the comic.
Well, lets be fair, Willis still introducing characters for those who are new to the Walkyverse. It’s not gonna be angsty and dramatic until the key characters are in play. thats how all the dramas have gone from the ancient Greek to the modern Geek.
Dude, you don’t need to know the old strips to get these. Yes, that’s why people are flipping out in tbe comments, but it’s not the point of the strips. The jokes so far have been about alcoholism, clueless sheltered mentalities of kids raised by religious zealots, senseless philandering, and college life in general. If jokes that aren’t about toys, comic books, and alternative lifestyles don’t do it for you that’s okay, but it doesn’t mean there’s no humor.
DoA really has nothing to do with the Shortpacked! schedule, as far as I understand it. He’s already implied that DoA would have had a lessened schedule as well, if it didn’t already have a strip backlog.
So it’s really not fair to apply dislike on that grounds.
Is Joyce Catholic? (Don’t answer that, I’ll check the wiki in a second) In my experience, Catholics are slightly less insanely religious hardcore than Southern Baptists, but I do differentiate between regular Catholics, grocery-store Catholics, and Catholic Fanatics. The latter scare the Church, much less me.
I agree. Catholics tend to be rather more laid back (and prone to apostasy) than Protestants…My family is Catholic, with some Pentecostals who married in. My great aunt was a nun. Even she was less churchy than my Pentecostal relatives. Hell, those of us raised Catholic are apostates to the last. My grandfather was devout, but not a scary-type. Only mark of his Catholicism is how many aunts and uncles I have. >_>
I would think the Post or Fox News would be the last thing in the world to create hippies! They’re all about bootstraps, and the pulling of oneself upwards by them.
Intriguingly, the local FOX news station in my area is pretty… not conservative. I wager they’re not terribly politically liberal, but they’re far from the party line as far as the parent company is concerned.
I thought Fox News was a cable network. Do they have short local segments between the Far Right national programs, or are you thinking of your local Fox station’s news programming. If the former, I’ve never managed to catch it.
And so it continues, Joyce really isn’t all that well adjusted even compared to what we find out in the last strip, where it was mostly an iffy moment and it wasn’t for sure how. This more or less sells that in the end she is VERY naive and does have some issues and a spark of the old Joyce. (What little I read of the old comics, I didn’t read them all.)
Hey David,
So at the risk of being a total creeper, I started reading Shortpacked a week ago (found by the GWS & S*P crossover), went to the very beginning and read all the way through (it’s been awesome) and then found DOA and can’t help but notice the IU references and then the Hi-Times reference, as in the Slicers from La Porte? I was a Cougar from New Prairie, please tell me the world isn’t this small.
ah sarah, i know your pain. my stoner brother has kept me up every night for years, its cost me sooo much and he does fuck all about it. ho humm ill just sleep on the sofa

Where did Hollywood go so wrong? I thought movies were supposed to be an escape from reality, a chance to put your worries aside and not have to think about any underlying ideas or concepts. Well, not anymore.

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908.
"You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action

The concept of a hifter intrigues me in a way I can’t explain. What the hell is it & why does Joyce fear it?
A drippie on the other hand…fairly self-explanatory.
A swimmer who never dries off?
You never heard of Adlol Hifter?
Ah classic Joyce, how we’ve missed you.
Whooo! Hi-Times reference! Go Slicers or something.
Wooooo!
Nos Paces!*
*If you do not remember this incredibly weird in-joke then you are probably cooler than I. But for some reason it has stuck with me still all these many moons later.
Haha, I’m liking Joyce.
Just watch this mysterious stoner girl be someone we’ll least expect. (It’s Dina isn’t it? Or maybe Leslie….)
Intriguing.
There is nothing wrong with being a drifter it just means you’re unfocused or lazy
Grok?
You grok not ‘grok‘?

No need to go to the SIaSL entry – Grok has its own wikipedia entry. (Which I linked to in my reply.) It’s that big a deal.
Sorry. I just realized when I posted my own link that hyperlinks are not immediately apparent on this site. (Gravatar’s fault?) I only see a link if I happen to move my mouse over the text.

I wanna be a hifter! Not so much a Drippie though, cause they smell funny…er.
That Grok makes you my new favorite person Willis.
I love that Willis used that verb.
I love that *Sarah* used it!
I thought Joyce was a drippy
You mean because she’s “wet behind the ears”, right? Right?
Well, that answers my question. Yes, Joyce is still a complete looney tune.
Dem dere drippies don’ gots a place hur in MAH Amurrrca.

I feel like somebody just set us up the Drama Bomb.
Pulled the Drama Tag? Shortpacked humor!
teehee. Catholics make me laugh. something about Catholic school my whole life makes religious hardcores funny.

To be more specific Joyce is protestant. It was a semantic mistake on my part. I always get “Catholic” and “Christian” confused.
Wow Joyce has some issues. you only become a hippie or a drifter isf you reas The Washington post or Fox news.
I would think the Post or Fox News would be the last thing in the world to create hippies! They’re all about bootstraps, and the pulling of oneself upwards by them.
Are you guys confusing the Washington Post with the Washington Times?
Bootstraps is the Washington TIMES’s ballpark.
Intriguingly, the local FOX news station in my area is pretty… not conservative. I wager they’re not terribly politically liberal, but they’re far from the party line as far as the parent company is concerned.

I was raised in La Porte, Indiana! It is indeed a small world.
the color of her hair vs her eyes makes my brain implode
I love the Stranger in a Strange land reference.
Drippie: A hippie with a cocaine habit who doesn’t even bother to stop their nosebleeds.
I don’t remember this one. I guess I blocked out the stupidity of the third panel.
ah sarah, i know your pain. my stoner brother has kept me up every night for years, its cost me sooo much and he does fuck all about it. ho humm ill just sleep on the sofa
Went back to look at the URL for page 1 and whoops I guess I’m rereading DoA again.
This comic is just going to make me faceplam every time Joyce talks, isn’t it?
