Estrogen and testosterone cause really different pheromones. I know there’s a massive difference in the smell of my sweat and urine and genital stuff on testosterone vs off. I have not noticed a change in my saliva scent but it’s not infeasible.
I feel like it’s more a case of reminding us that she’s still the same Daisy we’ve always known and loved/hated after some strips in the last couple of storylines where she had some nuance, or at least some less one-note scripting. More of a two steps forward, one step Flanders.
Daisy’s thirst is rapidly spiraling into self parody. This is disappointing, but I suppose she had to redeem herself after accidentally displaying *gasp* functional, sentient non-horny thoughts in the last strip
I still have some faith. Admittedly the conceit of this joke is kind of ridiculous but I really doubt a lick on a shirt is really going to affect the decision here. It just helps even the playing field from what was essentially a guarantee Joyce would get the gig.
I get that. I’d even be fine if it was less of a logical leap — most of Daisy’s other punchlines have worked, because her horniness slots plausibly into the story around her. She was already talking about a female superhero, or Billie’s ex, or similar.
But this is just flat-out impossible. Why would she see Walky wearing a licked shirt and assume he didn’t lick it himself? It’s like she wandered into a Target, saw a toaster, thought “women buy toasters sometimes” and then accosted the nearest employee to introduce her to some toaster-purchasing women.
This is right up there with Ross saying “clever girl” when Dina attacked him. It’s a goofy moment, sure, but it completely breaks the scene. Which is a rare misstep, because I usually love this comic’s respect for its own world.
I’m assuming Daisy will catch herself in the next strip (and apologize) and that this is mostly a dumb gag rather than something that derails the entire scene, but we’ll see

You know, I suspected Lucy licking the sauce off of Walky’s shirt was going to drive something in the plot forward in a big way, but I’ve gotta admit I thought it was going to be some kind of sexual awakening in Walky, not summon every damn ounce of Daisy’s thirst.
Well there is a chance it did awaken something in walky. After all he was late getting to the newspaper office… Maybe he and lucy had… Stuff… To do together.
Julia Gray has way more story potential. If Willis let Joyce win, he’d have to show Joyce’s comics every once in a while. LAWsome is a one-note strip and Willis has already showed it, so he won’t have to show it again, and can do more with the real DoA story.
…Or maybe it’s just that I don’t enjoy brutality-for-comedy, and I’m missing something genuinely hilarious about LAWsome…
On the third hand, Willis is good enough to use Julia Gray as a real contribution to the storytelling – foreshadowing, Greek chorus, character development, the possibilities are many and various. So if he wants, he could certainly show Julia Gray strips without detracting from DoA.

I am a little confused Daisy has shown more interest in the potential aftermath of woman spit over say y’know the actual living breathing woman who totally put a bunch of gay subtext in her comic right in front of her. I guess imagination will always trump reality.
It’s more that it takes a reagent of about .05 drams of lasciviousness to kickstart Daisy’s thirst chain reaction. Joyce didn’t provide that reagent of lasciviousness. A licked-clean shirt did.
I can’t tell if this is better or worse than my original thought that Daisy would demand that Joyce increase Juliet Grays bust size dramatically if she wanted to be published.
I mean I guess if you take the comedy element out this does read like Daisy asking someone she’s supposed to interview for a job is she can bang their girlfriend which is pretty inappropriate.
I’m gonna go ahead and predict that this will not be the last we hear a discussion on this issue in general or as it relates specifically to Daisy. It would not be the first time a serious issue presented as a punchline in one strip only to be followed up with a more sober discussion and/or serious consequences. It would also not be the first time in this strip or media in general where comedy is used as a way to examine and discuss harsh or sensitive issues. If that’s not something that interests you or something that’s going to impact your ability to enjoy the comic I think its best not to continue reading it.

Daisy’s always been pretty bad about that, back in the early days when Ruth made a pass at Billie while they were still in the petty trying to kill eachother stage and not the sexy trying to kill eachother stage, Billie tells Daisy that Ruth, the RA, sexually harassed her and Daisy was turned on by Billie’s story instead of, you know, horrified.
Billie said the RA kissed her, Daisy got Interested and called it litigious, and then Billie started straight up reenacting the whole “shoving you into a wall and staring you in the eyes for a long minute” thing, leaned in even closer, and then Daisy thought she was gonna get smooched.
Billie never said, specifically, “Daisy, my RA just forced herself onto me.”
Seriously, I’m surprised Walky didn’t say “This counts as a third date, right? I didn’t really want the comic gig anyway, hey, did you know Booster’s gonna be gone for like 4 hours?”
How the fu-….Why would that be-….Daisy needs to take a week of Absence to get herself sorted out, go on Tinder, do blind speed date events, meets some people don’t care just someone get her some help.
So I like Daisy and don’t want her to get into to too much serious trouble BUT I feel like SOMEONE needs to report her for this type of nonsense at some point. Like it’s getting too ridiculous for it to say “haha parody” for too much longer.
If this keeps up I can see someone being like “ok we need more serious leadership because Daisy is just way to distracted.” Then they just take a vote like she’s being recalled.
I do wonder why Daisy is being portrayed as being so eager to date but unsuccessful at finding a partner.
She is drawn to be relatively attractive (well, as much as you can tell from a comic), and other than being overly eager, she doesn’t seem to have any personality traits that would be a deal-breaker. And given her eagerness, she probably isn’t too… picky, nor does it doesn’t seem like she would shy away from internet dating, etc. You would figure she would be able to find someone for either something casual or a steady girlfriend.
Does she have some sort of flaw which is not obvious from the comics? Or is she like Joe… actually does date, but is completely shallow and eager to find her next conquest?
Some people are just forever alone. I mean all those traits more or less describe me…I hope and I’m also forever alone :P. Not everybody finds somebody. Or has casual hookups. Turns out a lot of the good people are taken or not into you.

I quickly looked back and her date with Ruth literally involved her going “I’m so excited I’m gonna poop” and running off to stress poop at the prospect of getting laid. Now, that’d be enough for me to tap the brakes- it wouldn’t scare me off but I’d be like “okay, I’m not going to bed with you until I’m either more comfortable or more eager” ‘cause the other party being WAY more eager than you is generally off putting. Some people would absolutely be scared off by that.
Also some people (myself absolutely included) are really bad at knowing how to connect with people, either for relationships or relations. It definitely gets harder when you’re any sort of queer too.

ok but anyway, the article i linked to, and i admit i haven’t gone and read the sources, but while it says that a healthy sex life has various benefits it hardly goes as far as to suggest that sex is necessary to stay healthy. in fact it states outright that “there is no evidence that celibacy or asexuality is actually physically or psychologically unhealthy.”
so while i’m sure a deeper dive would push this conversation into more interesting and specific territory as far as sweeping statements go i think that’s a stronger takeaway than “sex may correlate with lower risks of various conditions”.
Well for various things like stress relief, lower blood pressure and especially decreased risk of prostate cancer, you don’t “need” sex or masturbation, the same way you don’t “need” a balanced diet.
Sure you could go without it, but it’s just REALLY difficult to find a viable substitute that can provide ALL of those health benefits simultaneously.

like, i enjoy a hypothetical tangent as much as the next nerd but are we at the very least talking about the same general topic here?
I have never liked this attempt at “role reversal is funny” in particular because it really obliterates the experience of a lot of men who already feel like societal norms dictate they can’t speak up about it.
Unless Walky and Joyce team up tomorrow to report her to the Title IX office. That’d be an interesting direction for the story to run off in.
Anyway glancing over the comments as I have, this didn’t read to me as sexual harassment, as in the actual crime as detailed, in that:
– It’s the last panel of a series of strips where Daisy displays an ounce of professionalism and then resets to status quo.
– She’s a cartoon, a caricature of an actual person, and thus has a wild cartoon reaction to sell how pathetically desperate she is to get laid, not just grabbing Walky’s shirt but being able to pinpoint that Girl Saliva has touched it and therefore Walky’s girlfriend is probably a freak.
– Knowing that Daisy has zero power in any scenario, and has so far only expressed (in one panel of a strip from like 9 years ago now) a willingness to be bribed with sexual favours as opposed to trying to extort them, I don’t feel threatened for Walky in this scenario or anyone who would be in Walky’s position.
(I avoided gendered language here but the reality is that this is something that’s a lot heavier to talk about with women as the specific context of “an authority figure exploiting power for sexual favours” is something that is more widely understood as something that happens to women)
But then the problem with that thinking, the way it is in a whole lot of crappy media and media that isn’t crappy and yet still indulges it nonetheless, is that some weirdo groping you and getting away with it actually happens to people in real life, less so the part where you punch someone out the window into the stratosphere.
That last part probably gets to the root of it, I think, in that some asshole humiliates and degrades someone and then not only does no one step in to help, the only consequence they receive is ultra cartoony and then they bounce back no worse for wear and go back to being some kind of intended to be funny character.
I don’t think it’s enough to just leave it at “Daisy’s a cartoon so it’s fine” if I want to approach it the way I have been, this is on the same level of how plenty of DoA strips play out and with the same level of expectation and consequence that is adjusted for the scenario (Dina aggressively hompfking Mary to death to chase her away, and then doing the same to Amber and tearing her pants off so now Dina has to apologize and go buy her a new pair, because we like Amber and therefore Dina can’t just hompfk in her direction without some acknowledgement from the plot), that does invite much stronger reactions in the specific context of desperately grabbing someone’s clothes in the hopes of getting laid.

I mean, this isn’t true? Daisy is a prospective… let’s go with employer. Walky and Joyce are applying to a paid position. Daisy gets to pick which one of them gets it. This isn’t “no power”.
Also, if you get a say in people’s income, “telling them you can be bribed with sexual favours” and “extorting sexual favours” is a distinction without a difference.

It’s not that Daisy isn’t in a position of authority where she can abuse her power, it’s that it’s Daisy and we’ve never gotten a hint that she’s willing to engage with such a thing the way Jason and Sal bonked and it was a Whole Thing where it wasn’t really morally unethical but it sure was professionally unethical, Jason struggled with it on top of struggling with being a shitty teacher, and then it ultimate got him fired when he decided it was more important to own up to his mistake.
I brought up the “man, no one ever thinks to bribe me with sexual favours” line, as in it was one line in one panel, to make the point that Daisy, hypothetically, as in it was a joke to go “haha Daisy is sexually frustrated”, would only violate her professional standards if she was asked to, and Walky and Joyce are definitely not going to ask on the grounds of, respectively, being a dude while Daisy is a lesbian and Joyce being straight while Daisy is not Dorothy.
That’s Jennifer’s motivation, as in she wants Daisy to get laid so she’ll be more receptive to her, but I don’t think that factored into Daisy wanting to meet Ruth and then they actually hit it off and Daisy showed the most character depth she has in the whole series.
As for Walky, well, yeah, you’re right, that’s a scenario where Daisy could bribe Walky with a job if he introduces her to his girlfriend, but by that point I’m digging like five layers in to find why Daisy is being Problematic in this one panel.
She’s asking him right now, when he’s come to her office to compete to a job, if “she’s bi and open to a third and can he stand in the corner”. While grabbing him.
Yeah, it’s all overblown and played up for laughs and the job in question is pathetically minor, but there’s really no hypothetical introduction to his girlfriend involved. This is straight up asking for sex.
Okay but there’s a difference between “Daisy wants to bang Lucy” and “that, so Walky can get a job.”
Even aside from it being an intentionally wacky last panel, that doesn’t actually have to matter to anyone who’s bothered by it, it’s something I have to dig for the most negative interpretation possible when it starts with Daisy sniffing out Girl Saliva, pathetically begging to be let into Walky’s non-existent polyamourous relationship that being a reader means I know doesn’t exist, and then after that, something the comic has not and will not touch on unless this was for drama purposes, now I can dig into something wildly inappropriate like Daisy trying to get Walky to pimp Lucy out to her in exchange for a job instead of merely normal levels of inappropriate like what we have here.
hm. it’s your prerogative to read it as harmless comedy, but i’m not convinced.
like, we know Daisy is thirsty, that’s her #1 character trait, and she has communicated that repeatedly and in a number of less problematic ways in the past, like that joke about getting bribed: no one was in the room, whatever. that didn’t feel quite as serious. What i mean is: this here? it wasn’t necessary from a writing perspective. it doesn’t bring anything new to the table in terms of Daisy being sexually frustrated in a cringe way. it’s over the top, and i think that’s on purpose.
Besides — we’re never led to believe that she’s willing to cross red lines, you say? i mean, she was totally about to kiss Jennifer that one time. So when a few months later that same editor she tried to kiss, and who she regularly gets into professional arguments with, and who knows (bc everyone knows) that she’s desperate for a shag, sets her up for a date?? yeah, i think Daisy has to be aware that she’s being sweetened.
I mean, that girl has a serious problem. The fact that her character was recently fleshed out quite a bit, and made very endearing, and that today’s outburst is especially outrageous makes me think it doesn’t serve to “reset the status quo” so much as build up to a more serious arc for her.
I mean yeah I think it’s harmless comedy in that I don’t think it reveals something dark about Daisy’s character, I think it’s only harmful in how an actual person can read it and react to it.
As for Daisy and Jennifer, well, Jennifer straight up reenacted Ruth slamming into her a wall and kissing her to the point of getting real up close and personal on Daisy, as in I think it’s safe to read that as Daisy getting caught up in getting bullied by a cheerleader. Jennifer’s definitely trying to put herself in Daisy’s good graces by hooking her up with Ruth, but we’ve never gotten any indication that Daisy herself knows of that intent, as far as Daisy conveyed it to us Jennifer just tried to hook her up with her ex-girlfriend she talked up a whole lot.
Daisy got an ounce of character focus when she was with Ruth, in that I think their date comprises a total quarter of Daisy’s screentime since the start of the comic, but she’s still Daisy. She’s still a constantly thirsty gag character, we just started to see other aspects of her character and if she continues to develop that one gag is going to get downplayed into non-existence. This is just the first time we’ve seen that gag since Daisy got some character writing.
Like how all Dina used to do was hide behind doors.

yeah, i understand that sort of obsession as people have often told me i have an enviable talent for learning languages. and they tend to frame it in terms of effort and sacrificing time i could’ve spent otherwise, and i tell them “i don’t know about talent or hard work, but i know foreign languages are mad interesting to me, so to me it doesn’t feel like an effort at all, actually i think i’m especially lazy when it comes to pushing myself to do things i have no interest in doing”
and maybe, that’s a big part of what talent really is?
I mean yeah I kinda think that’s where this is going if Daisy shows up again, which I’m not totally unconvinced about since she’s been in the comic since like 2011 and this year gave her more character focus than she’s ever had.
What’s Daisy like when she’s not a one note gag? When she is complaining about her thirst? Well:
– She’s neurotic about making a good impression in front of strangers, and is so bad at handling awkward social situations that she’ll run away, buy a coat as a disguise, go back, and then do it all over again when that awkward social situation happens again.
– Meets Ruth, makes a pretty good effort at first date small talk without any immediate “omg plow me already” reactions.
– She passively dances around Ruth’s issues until Ruth says she’s too functional to be with her, whereupon Daisy has enough self awareness to say she’s scared out of her mind but likes Ruth enough that she wants to try and then asks if Ruth likes her too, which is maybe the scariest thing to ask someone you are trying to impress.
– Actually gets Ruth to talk about how weird being in the US feels and, pointedly, when Ruth starts talking about her suicidal ideation, Daisy puts her hand on hers instinctively because she was worried about what Ruth was saying. That’s when she panics at the prospect of sex with Ruth, who goes home with Jason. Daisy just kind of feels bad about it until Ruth sends her a deepfake tiddy pic.
And now we got this scene with her and Joyce, where:
– She’s just actually being a calm professional with Joyce to the point of giving a really good piece of advice that Joyce is a freshman and all her plans for the comic might not work out because by the end of her time in college she’ll be a completely different person.
– Says she likes the romantic tension of the comic, and then clarifies she meant the one Joyce put in on accident, noting without any hidden intent how Absurdly Gay the Saga of Captain Julia Gray is with the relationship between its title character and President Doris. If there was any point in this time for Daisy to act like a horny gorilla it was when she had reason to believe Joyce was showing off her self-insert yuri fanfic, and all she really had to say was that her audience might read something into it that Joyce didn’t intend and have a bad reaction.
Joyce drawing a comic for the IU newspaper is the kind of thing that will involve at least one conversation with Daisy so it’s entirely possible we just needed her to show up and not be the insufferable one-note joke when an actual human conversation needed to take place instead, but the fact that we got this so soon after her date with Ruth showing more depth to her character than has ever been hinted at, let alone ever been interested in hinting at, I’ll call that intentional. In hindsight, Daisy responding to Ruth calling her functional by talking about how she was a weird mess herself and wanted to try anyway felt like Daisy taking an assessment test for supporting character status.
Joyce getting passed up for Walky based on something this cartoonishly stupid is hitting some surprisingly painful nerves for me.
Not that she’s ACTUALLY gotten passed up yet – Daisy could absolutely turn around tomorrow and say “no, regardless of whether LAWsome has potential as comedy, Julia Gray clearly is the better choice”. But even the idea, oof.
Daisy does, however, seem like the type to make bad decisions based on how horny she is, regardless of how effective those decisions will be at getting her laid.
Julia Gray actually ISN’T the better choice. It would be the better choice for, saaayyy, and I’m just spitballing here, right off the top of my head, don’t know why it occurred to me, an online webcomic where people can access any strip at any time.
For a college newspaper? Not so great. The people who start college in future years miss the start. The people who graduate in a year or 2 aren’t going to be interested because, well, imagine if there was this show that you were told was plotted for three seasons but were ALSO told it’d only run for one. Would you bother watching that one season, knowing that absolutely nothing would be resolved before you had stop watching?
On the other hand joyce can arrange the comic so that each school term tells a complete story. So those graduating earlier won’t be left on a cliff hanger and new readers can get caught up easily.
Plus, if you are trying to increase readership, you do not necessarily care if your readers leave early… You just care if they “tune in” while they are around. A well written plot-based comic might just do that.
She could in theory, but can she? This is the first thing she’s ever tried to write other than her smutLiterature. Her plans are grandiose, she seems far more concerned with the big picture than with making it work episodically.
A well written plot-based comic certainly could work. The introduction to a sprawling epic, with the payoff years down the line probably can’t. Everything we’ve heard about this makes it sound more like the latter to me.
Most comic strips are probably a gag-a-day (or may have short story arcs that run a few strips).
I think the problem with Walky’s LAWsome comic is… Walky himself. With his penchant to get easily distracted, he may leave the strip after a few months (assuming he doesn’t flunk out due to bad grades caused by untreated ADD). Plus, I’m not sure how much creativity Walky has. (His whole “laugh at someone/dropkick” maybe good as a 1-off, but does he have anything outside of that?)
This aspect of Daisy’s character is getting kinda tiresome. It was funny when it was stress pooping on a date with Ruth and like subconsciously miming scissoring, but it’s been too long it feels like it needs to either tone down or be deployed… better than this?
If Daisy’s going to start showing up more, if that date with Ruth was a glimpse into who she is and we’ll see more of it, doesn’t she gotta start at her worst?
‘Cause the phrase “man I can’t for Daisy to show up again” has never once before now crossed my mind in the seven years I’ve been reading.

Not only was Becky super fucked up by having her entire life upended and so ran away to Joyce because she was the only fixture of any kind of comfort and stability that still existed, like two days later she found out about Ryan and immediately associated her action with Joyce being attacked, as in Becky was utterly horrified to discover that she could have triggered Joyce’s trauma by kissing her.
That’s like the least okay reaction to “having committed sexual assault” that could possibly exist.

“Sexual assault”, much like assault in general, is an incredibly broad category.
Yes, technically Becky’s kiss was sexual assault. Mostly because it’s fiendishly difficult to write laws or definitions that cover the subtleties of human interactions thoroughly. Practically and realistically, due to the circumstances and reactions of both characters, no one would ever treat it as such.
A different unwanted kiss under different circumstances? Could well be treated that way.
This is basically a reprise of when Robin invaded Leslie’s house and refused to leave after being asked, being told, and being forcefully thrown out.
Half the comments were “aw, but this is sweet” but somehow I was the bad guy for pointing out that none of them would be saying “aw, but this is sweet” if Robin had been a dude.

Daisy’s thirst is rapidly spiraling into self parody. This is disappointing, but I suppose she had to redeem herself after accidentally displaying *gasp* functional, sentient non-horny thoughts in the last strip
I still have some faith. Admittedly the conceit of this joke is kind of ridiculous but I really doubt a lick on a shirt is really going to affect the decision here. It just helps even the playing field from what was essentially a guarantee Joyce would get the gig.
I get that. I’d even be fine if it was less of a logical leap — most of Daisy’s other punchlines have worked, because her horniness slots plausibly into the story around her. She was already talking about a female superhero, or Billie’s ex, or similar.
But this is just flat-out impossible. Why would she see Walky wearing a licked shirt and assume he didn’t lick it himself? It’s like she wandered into a Target, saw a toaster, thought “women buy toasters sometimes” and then accosted the nearest employee to introduce her to some toaster-purchasing women.
This is right up there with Ross saying “clever girl” when Dina attacked him. It’s a goofy moment, sure, but it completely breaks the scene. Which is a rare misstep, because I usually love this comic’s respect for its own world.
At least “Clever girl” was subtle and didn’t actually impact the plot in any way. This joke is asking way more from us.
There’s also the Rule of Funny.
I’m assuming Daisy will catch herself in the next strip (and apologize) and that this is mostly a dumb gag rather than something that derails the entire scene, but we’ll see
I’d say it’s possible the teasing of Joyce’s comic might have caused her to be more predisposed to let herself overcome by her thirstiness.

On the third hand, Willis is good enough to use Julia Gray as a real contribution to the storytelling – foreshadowing, Greek chorus, character development, the possibilities are many and various. So if he wants, he could certainly show Julia Gray strips without detracting from DoA.

It would also not be the first time in this strip or media in general where comedy is used as a way to examine and discuss harsh or sensitive issues. If that’s not something that interests you or something that’s going to impact your ability to enjoy the comic I think its best not to continue reading it.

So I like Daisy and don’t want her to get into to too much serious trouble BUT I feel like SOMEONE needs to report her for this type of nonsense at some point. Like it’s getting too ridiculous for it to say “haha parody” for too much longer.

I do wonder why Daisy is being portrayed as being so eager to date but unsuccessful at finding a partner.
She is drawn to be relatively attractive (well, as much as you can tell from a comic), and other than being overly eager, she doesn’t seem to have any personality traits that would be a deal-breaker. And given her eagerness, she probably isn’t too… picky, nor does it doesn’t seem like she would shy away from internet dating, etc. You would figure she would be able to find someone for either something casual or a steady girlfriend.
Does she have some sort of flaw which is not obvious from the comics? Or is she like Joe… actually does date, but is completely shallow and eager to find her next conquest?

so while i’m sure a deeper dive would push this conversation into more interesting and specific territory as far as sweeping statements go i think that’s a stronger takeaway than “sex may correlate with lower risks of various conditions”.
Well for various things like stress relief, lower blood pressure and especially decreased risk of prostate cancer, you don’t “need” sex or masturbation, the same way you don’t “need” a balanced diet.

Anyway glancing over the comments as I have, this didn’t read to me as sexual harassment, as in the actual crime as detailed, in that:
– It’s the last panel of a series of strips where Daisy displays an ounce of professionalism and then resets to status quo.
– She’s a cartoon, a caricature of an actual person, and thus has a wild cartoon reaction to sell how pathetically desperate she is to get laid, not just grabbing Walky’s shirt but being able to pinpoint that Girl Saliva has touched it and therefore Walky’s girlfriend is probably a freak.
– Knowing that Daisy has zero power in any scenario, and has so far only expressed (in one panel of a strip from like 9 years ago now) a willingness to be bribed with sexual favours as opposed to trying to extort them, I don’t feel threatened for Walky in this scenario or anyone who would be in Walky’s position.
(I avoided gendered language here but the reality is that this is something that’s a lot heavier to talk about with women as the specific context of “an authority figure exploiting power for sexual favours” is something that is more widely understood as something that happens to women)
But then the problem with that thinking, the way it is in a whole lot of crappy media and media that isn’t crappy and yet still indulges it nonetheless, is that some weirdo groping you and getting away with it actually happens to people in real life, less so the part where you punch someone out the window into the stratosphere.
That last part probably gets to the root of it, I think, in that some asshole humiliates and degrades someone and then not only does no one step in to help, the only consequence they receive is ultra cartoony and then they bounce back no worse for wear and go back to being some kind of intended to be funny character.
I don’t think it’s enough to just leave it at “Daisy’s a cartoon so it’s fine” if I want to approach it the way I have been, this is on the same level of how plenty of DoA strips play out and with the same level of expectation and consequence that is adjusted for the scenario (Dina aggressively hompfking Mary to death to chase her away, and then doing the same to Amber and tearing her pants off so now Dina has to apologize and go buy her a new pair, because we like Amber and therefore Dina can’t just hompfk in her direction without some acknowledgement from the plot), that does invite much stronger reactions in the specific context of desperately grabbing someone’s clothes in the hopes of getting laid.

I mean, this isn’t true? Daisy is a prospective… let’s go with employer. Walky and Joyce are applying to a paid position. Daisy gets to pick which one of them gets it. This isn’t “no power”.
Also, if you get a say in people’s income, “telling them you can be bribed with sexual favours” and “extorting sexual favours” is a distinction without a difference.

It’s not that Daisy isn’t in a position of authority where she can abuse her power, it’s that it’s Daisy and we’ve never gotten a hint that she’s willing to engage with such a thing the way Jason and Sal bonked and it was a Whole Thing where it wasn’t really morally unethical but it sure was professionally unethical, Jason struggled with it on top of struggling with being a shitty teacher, and then it ultimate got him fired when he decided it was more important to own up to his mistake.
I brought up the “man, no one ever thinks to bribe me with sexual favours” line, as in it was one line in one panel, to make the point that Daisy, hypothetically, as in it was a joke to go “haha Daisy is sexually frustrated”, would only violate her professional standards if she was asked to, and Walky and Joyce are definitely not going to ask on the grounds of, respectively, being a dude while Daisy is a lesbian and Joyce being straight while Daisy is not Dorothy.
Of course, she’s not asking for Walky, she’s asking for Walky to provide her with his girlfriend. Which shifts the tone a bit.
It’s also worth pointing out that, depending how you read it, Jennifer has already tried bribing her with a date with Ruth.
That’s Jennifer’s motivation, as in she wants Daisy to get laid so she’ll be more receptive to her, but I don’t think that factored into Daisy wanting to meet Ruth and then they actually hit it off and Daisy showed the most character depth she has in the whole series.
As for Walky, well, yeah, you’re right, that’s a scenario where Daisy could bribe Walky with a job if he introduces her to his girlfriend, but by that point I’m digging like five layers in to find why Daisy is being Problematic in this one panel.
She’s asking him right now, when he’s come to her office to compete to a job, if “she’s bi and open to a third and can he stand in the corner”. While grabbing him.
Yeah, it’s all overblown and played up for laughs and the job in question is pathetically minor, but there’s really no hypothetical introduction to his girlfriend involved. This is straight up asking for sex.
Okay but there’s a difference between “Daisy wants to bang Lucy” and “that, so Walky can get a job.”
Even aside from it being an intentionally wacky last panel, that doesn’t actually have to matter to anyone who’s bothered by it, it’s something I have to dig for the most negative interpretation possible when it starts with Daisy sniffing out Girl Saliva, pathetically begging to be let into Walky’s non-existent polyamourous relationship that being a reader means I know doesn’t exist, and then after that, something the comic has not and will not touch on unless this was for drama purposes, now I can dig into something wildly inappropriate like Daisy trying to get Walky to pimp Lucy out to her in exchange for a job instead of merely normal levels of inappropriate like what we have here.
Honestly I doubt Daisy is intentionally trying to do so. She doesn’t have to be consciously trying to make the deal for it to be wildly inappropriate.
And quite possibly legally actionable – if not, it’s only because she’s just a student editor and that stakes are so incredibly low.
Daisy is currently in a position of power here, actually? She’s the deciding force of if Walky gets the job or not.

like, we know Daisy is thirsty, that’s her #1 character trait, and she has communicated that repeatedly and in a number of less problematic ways in the past, like that joke about getting bribed: no one was in the room, whatever. that didn’t feel quite as serious. What i mean is: this here? it wasn’t necessary from a writing perspective. it doesn’t bring anything new to the table in terms of Daisy being sexually frustrated in a cringe way. it’s over the top, and i think that’s on purpose.
Besides — we’re never led to believe that she’s willing to cross red lines, you say? i mean, she was totally about to kiss Jennifer that one time. So when a few months later that same editor she tried to kiss, and who she regularly gets into professional arguments with, and who knows (bc everyone knows) that she’s desperate for a shag, sets her up for a date?? yeah, i think Daisy has to be aware that she’s being sweetened.
I mean, that girl has a serious problem. The fact that her character was recently fleshed out quite a bit, and made very endearing, and that today’s outburst is especially outrageous makes me think it doesn’t serve to “reset the status quo” so much as build up to a more serious arc for her.
I mean yeah I think it’s harmless comedy in that I don’t think it reveals something dark about Daisy’s character, I think it’s only harmful in how an actual person can read it and react to it.
As for Daisy and Jennifer, well, Jennifer straight up reenacted Ruth slamming into her a wall and kissing her to the point of getting real up close and personal on Daisy, as in I think it’s safe to read that as Daisy getting caught up in getting bullied by a cheerleader. Jennifer’s definitely trying to put herself in Daisy’s good graces by hooking her up with Ruth, but we’ve never gotten any indication that Daisy herself knows of that intent, as far as Daisy conveyed it to us Jennifer just tried to hook her up with her ex-girlfriend she talked up a whole lot.
Daisy got an ounce of character focus when she was with Ruth, in that I think their date comprises a total quarter of Daisy’s screentime since the start of the comic, but she’s still Daisy. She’s still a constantly thirsty gag character, we just started to see other aspects of her character and if she continues to develop that one gag is going to get downplayed into non-existence. This is just the first time we’ve seen that gag since Daisy got some character writing.
Like how all Dina used to do was hide behind doors.

I mean yeah I kinda think that’s where this is going if Daisy shows up again, which I’m not totally unconvinced about since she’s been in the comic since like 2011 and this year gave her more character focus than she’s ever had.
What’s Daisy like when she’s not a one note gag? When she is complaining about her thirst? Well:
– She’s neurotic about making a good impression in front of strangers, and is so bad at handling awkward social situations that she’ll run away, buy a coat as a disguise, go back, and then do it all over again when that awkward social situation happens again.
– Meets Ruth, makes a pretty good effort at first date small talk without any immediate “omg plow me already” reactions.
– She passively dances around Ruth’s issues until Ruth says she’s too functional to be with her, whereupon Daisy has enough self awareness to say she’s scared out of her mind but likes Ruth enough that she wants to try and then asks if Ruth likes her too, which is maybe the scariest thing to ask someone you are trying to impress.
– Actually gets Ruth to talk about how weird being in the US feels and, pointedly, when Ruth starts talking about her suicidal ideation, Daisy puts her hand on hers instinctively because she was worried about what Ruth was saying. That’s when she panics at the prospect of sex with Ruth, who goes home with Jason. Daisy just kind of feels bad about it until Ruth sends her a deepfake tiddy pic.
And now we got this scene with her and Joyce, where:
– She’s just actually being a calm professional with Joyce to the point of giving a really good piece of advice that Joyce is a freshman and all her plans for the comic might not work out because by the end of her time in college she’ll be a completely different person.
– Says she likes the romantic tension of the comic, and then clarifies she meant the one Joyce put in on accident, noting without any hidden intent how Absurdly Gay the Saga of Captain Julia Gray is with the relationship between its title character and President Doris. If there was any point in this time for Daisy to act like a horny gorilla it was when she had reason to believe Joyce was showing off her self-insert yuri fanfic, and all she really had to say was that her audience might read something into it that Joyce didn’t intend and have a bad reaction.
Joyce drawing a comic for the IU newspaper is the kind of thing that will involve at least one conversation with Daisy so it’s entirely possible we just needed her to show up and not be the insufferable one-note joke when an actual human conversation needed to take place instead, but the fact that we got this so soon after her date with Ruth showing more depth to her character than has ever been hinted at, let alone ever been interested in hinting at, I’ll call that intentional. In hindsight, Daisy responding to Ruth calling her functional by talking about how she was a weird mess herself and wanted to try anyway felt like Daisy taking an assessment test for supporting character status.
This is extreme even by the previously established standards.
Joyce getting passed up for Walky based on something this cartoonishly stupid is hitting some surprisingly painful nerves for me.
Not that she’s ACTUALLY gotten passed up yet – Daisy could absolutely turn around tomorrow and say “no, regardless of whether LAWsome has potential as comedy, Julia Gray clearly is the better choice”. But even the idea, oof.
Daisy doesn’t seem like the type to be impressed by LAWsome.
Daisy does, however, seem like the type to make bad decisions based on how horny she is, regardless of how effective those decisions will be at getting her laid.
Like I said, it’s not a foregone conclusion.
Julia Gray actually ISN’T the better choice. It would be the better choice for, saaayyy, and I’m just spitballing here, right off the top of my head, don’t know why it occurred to me, an online webcomic where people can access any strip at any time.
For a college newspaper? Not so great. The people who start college in future years miss the start. The people who graduate in a year or 2 aren’t going to be interested because, well, imagine if there was this show that you were told was plotted for three seasons but were ALSO told it’d only run for one. Would you bother watching that one season, knowing that absolutely nothing would be resolved before you had stop watching?
On the other hand joyce can arrange the comic so that each school term tells a complete story. So those graduating earlier won’t be left on a cliff hanger and new readers can get caught up easily.
Plus, if you are trying to increase readership, you do not necessarily care if your readers leave early… You just care if they “tune in” while they are around. A well written plot-based comic might just do that.
She could in theory, but can she? This is the first thing she’s ever tried to write other than her
smutLiterature. Her plans are grandiose, she seems far more concerned with the big picture than with making it work episodically.A well written plot-based comic certainly could work. The introduction to a sprawling epic, with the payoff years down the line probably can’t. Everything we’ve heard about this makes it sound more like the latter to me.
LAWsome might actually be the better choice for a newspaper. A gag-a-day strip is a more natural fit than a lore-heavy serial drama.
Most comic strips are probably a gag-a-day (or may have short story arcs that run a few strips).
I think the problem with Walky’s LAWsome comic is… Walky himself. With his penchant to get easily distracted, he may leave the strip after a few months (assuming he doesn’t flunk out due to bad grades caused by untreated ADD). Plus, I’m not sure how much creativity Walky has. (His whole “laugh at someone/dropkick” maybe good as a 1-off, but does he have anything outside of that?)
But LAWsome is more one gag per career than one gag per strip.
This aspect of Daisy’s character is getting kinda tiresome. It was funny when it was stress pooping on a date with Ruth and like subconsciously miming scissoring, but it’s been too long it feels like it needs to either tone down or be deployed… better than this?
Well, look at it this way:
If Daisy’s going to start showing up more, if that date with Ruth was a glimpse into who she is and we’ll see more of it, doesn’t she gotta start at her worst?
‘Cause the phrase “man I can’t for Daisy to show up again” has never once before now crossed my mind in the seven years I’ve been reading.

Yeah this seems an egregiously spiteful interpretation of her kissing Joyce when she first visited. I assume that’s what the previous commenter is talking about cuz I cannot think of anything else

Not only was Becky super fucked up by having her entire life upended and so ran away to Joyce because she was the only fixture of any kind of comfort and stability that still existed, like two days later she found out about Ryan and immediately associated her action with Joyce being attacked, as in Becky was utterly horrified to discover that she could have triggered Joyce’s trauma by kissing her.
That’s like the least okay reaction to “having committed sexual assault” that could possibly exist.
Yeah like I think there’s a stark difference between like kissing ur friend you’ve had a crush on for a thousand years cuz you’re misreading signals and a bit manic cuz ur life is completely sideways and sexual assault. Especially considering Becky’s behavior after the incident
I hate to break it to the both of you, but “kissing someone who doesn’t want you to kiss them” is textbook definition of sexual assault.
How the heckers do you process fiction like that
The actual motivations of the characters and emotional tribulations they’re going through shouldn’t be secondary!
“Sexual assault”, much like assault in general, is an incredibly broad category.
Yes, technically Becky’s kiss was sexual assault. Mostly because it’s fiendishly difficult to write laws or definitions that cover the subtleties of human interactions thoroughly. Practically and realistically, due to the circumstances and reactions of both characters, no one would ever treat it as such.
A different unwanted kiss under different circumstances? Could well be treated that way.
Also, Becky is not at all okay with committing sexual assault, even if we concede that she did it.
… dammit, Daisy.

This is basically a reprise of when Robin invaded Leslie’s house and refused to leave after being asked, being told, and being forcefully thrown out.
Half the comments were “aw, but this is sweet” but somehow I was the bad guy for pointing out that none of them would be saying “aw, but this is sweet” if Robin had been a dude.
Like, it’d be creepy even without the power dynamic here (she decides who gets the job and is presumably their boss afterwards)
