Beyond the lust and love, a loophole to find out now could avoid incompatability leading to divorce, which is its own “sin” with less opportunity for loophole.

Becky is a pretty standard American Christian in that regard, it’s just that when she inevitably said “Oh no, this part of the immutable word is really harmful to my worldview. Time to mute it!” the part she muted was actually harmful and she’s not muting something like “Feed and clothe the hungry and cold,” like most American Christians do.
Yeah like, I kinda feel that a lot of modern cultural Christianity is about turning off and on the parts you want to follow.
Becky in a vacuum feels contradictory, where she was able to throw everything she didn’t want into the garbage, but “Good Christian Girl having a sexual guilt complex” doesn’t feel like that much of a stretch.

Fundamentalist beliefs is often literalist. In that sense, loopholes might be amenable to a believer. Alternate interpretations don’t focus on the action more so than the intention itself, which is assigned greater significance.

there’s not ROOLS against her undressing herself, it’s just that she’s been raised with shame around it- that’s what she meant about the Fundie Shame last strip. it’s not against the rules, she just can’t shake bad feels about it.
This gets around the shame, which is not a choice, but continues to toe the Actual lines Becky wants to toe.
It’s not a creed, it’s internalized “sex is bad” and “don’t be naked” messages that she grew up with causing a post-traumatic physical reaction.

Apparently, recent interpretations suggest that Leviticus passages might actually only refer to brothers, not even just random male-on-male banging.

But then the Rambam said that all same sex relations are one of “the practices of the Egyptians” which we’re forbidden from doing. Then The Shulchan Aruch upheld this. And so while it’s not explicitly mentioned in Torah, the Orthodox position has been that such things are forbidden.
Now, that is not to say there haven’t been recent writings by Orthodox rabbis suggesting that there are other halachic principles that trump this. And in addition what occurs in the bedroom cannot and need not be known to the community. So, while people can’t be out, there surely have been relationships.

Both the NIV and KJV seem to indicate that he did bed her, but the passage is vague in that it sounds more like he had sexual congress but withdrew before orgasm and ‘spilled his seed upon the ground’ — for which he paid with his life. I increasingly feel like the two of them need to have an entirely unsexy talk about what will and will not be okay for them to do.
This may have more to do with the bamptism shenanigans Willis tweeted about yesterday than with today’s strip but it’s not unrelated. I’ve been thinking about the weird way both the Catholic church and Becky’s church conflates the will of God with church doctrine.
Like when the priest says the wrong words and you die before the mistake is corrected so you go to Hell for all eternity, according to certain strict interpretations of scripture. Except it doesn’t matter because the holy man has declared you’re still saved as long as you accept God’s love. It turns out following the letter of the law is irrelevant.
But then you look into what this “accepting God’s love” stuff means specifically, and there are highly specific, quantifiable, exclusionary definitions in scripture – if you look at the world around you and happen to see Mother Earth or anything worth worshiping, in fact if you fail to see the God of Abraham and His love for you personally, you’re fucked. The letter of the law doesn’t just lay out the details of rituals and incantations you have to follow to receive salvation; it lays out exactly what you need to think and feel to fulfill its spirit to escape damnation.
So Becky has to look for loopholes in scripture to be allowed to feel certain things and touch her SO in certain ways because the church has taught her God judges her according to the rules as written by the church. Which is sad. I had a lot of hope that recognizing the church was full of crap had allowed her to divorce God from dogma and keep just the one she needs.
Though she seems to still work towards it at least.
