Haha. I wonder what it will be… Is Joe secretly an excellent artist and draftsperson? Is Joyce drawing lovingly detailed crotches or skipping that part? Is she just doing cartoons?
Especially if they don’t turn the heat up for the male models. Female models tend to display more in a cold room, but for male models “some shrinkage may occur”. I have some experience as a nude model, but for photography not drawing. And never mixed gender.
unless it’s specifically a sexually charged one on one flirty kinda ‘let me model for you ;P’ kinda deal, i imagine a classroom asking a model to make it more sexual would be considered harassment/charge a lot more lol.
I figure there’s at least a 50/50 chance she’s not hiding her drawings because they’re of a naked person, but because they’re all absolutely terrible augh how am I so bad at this (etc).
Maybe it’s just me, but I remember as someone who wasn’t even remotely good at art, when starting out I drew everything bigger so that it was easier to try to do ‘finer’ details.
I went back to check and he didn’t have a notepad with him when he turned up. Joyce has one cause she was bought one, and the other students showing up had their own, so the doofus is possibly too shy to ask for some paper and drawing on the easel!
No, we saw the date with Sarah’s sister whose name escapes me who eventually got to David Letterman’s alma mater Ball State, and Malaya in the Slipshine.
Joyce and Joe explaining their courtship to their their kids in twenty years like, oh, it was SO romantic. The Kids: what did you do on your first date? Did you kiss? Joe: no, your mom hired this kid we knew to punch me in the face repeatedly. The Kids: what? Joe: you know what happened to him? He DIED. I didn’t do it though. Totally unrelated. The Kids: oh good I guess. Joyce: on our second date six months later your dad followed me to life drawing class and we drew pictures of naked people together. The Kids: …what? Joyce: it was a female model so I absolutely did not draw any ding-dongs. The Kids: that seems like an awfully specific detail
You don’t even know, Yoto! Those chairs are terrible. We had to sit on those for whole courses and after like 2 weeks students started to bring in their own stools and pillows cause those drawing seats are trash to sit on for 10 minutes let alone over a hour.
They ARE extremely uncomfortable but the logic behind them is somewhat sound for when you’re drawing on a very large thing–usually a giant pad of newsprint paper–so you need to be able to lean it against something stable, have it within comfortable arms reach, and not be so directly in front of your face as to block your view of the thing you’re drawing. You can also have all of your various materials right in front of you spread out nicely.
Could at least fucking put a cushion on them or something though.
Life drawing classes are partly about teaching you to see the body you’re drawing as just shapes you need to try to get down on paper. Light and shadow, negative and positive space. And you DO start seeing that body that way, extremely quickly. I wound up doing a charcoal drawing that was centered and zoomed on the model’s dong once by accident, just because of where I started drawing and the viewing angle I was working from, and I swear to god it did not even register that I was drawing genitalia until after the picture was finished because I was entirely focused in on getting the shading right.
And I did! The shading on that dong was IMMACULATE.
Yeah I have to imagine life drawing teachers are not gonna be fazed by a drawing or two centered on a dong. Maybe if your whole sheet was nothing but dong-centered drawings they might encourage you to take some time to study other parts of the body, but even then, heck, dongs are a valid area of study in their own right
I’m into it. Joyce goes full-on Weird with it and starts drawing people she doesn’t like, except they all have massive, veiny cocks that defy all human logic.
Joyce is a natural cartoonist. Yes, the model was going to get naked anyway, and yes, a lot of renderings were going to be drawn of her, but only Joyce is able to make this into a comic strip.
i mean i know she had religious parents growing up but with 4-5(?) brothers in the house you’d think she’d end up seeing at least one of them naked at some point lol
I have four siblings and have never once seen any of them naked over the age of two. (And as the youngest Joyce wouldn’t have had even that opportunity.) It’s not that hard to avoid, honestly. Locks and knocks pretty much do it.
Ditto, two sisters, and I don’t think I saw either of them even partially unclothed once we were old enough to bathe ourselves, until well into adulthood when we’d gotten over any lingering adolescent body awkwardness enough to share changing rooms while clothes shopping.
My MOM though, lol. She’s the kind of person why doesn’t close the bathroom door when she pees, and sleeps in the nude. When I was growing up, due to the way the living arrangements were set up, she had to pass through the top of an open staircase to get to her bathroom, and if she was getting up at 2am to pee, she did *not* throw on a robe.
Now that I’M an adult who prefers to sleep in the buff, I get it. I don’t have kids myself, but if I did, there is a very high chance that same scenario would have played itself out many, many times by now.
Wonder if she wants to hide her drawings because she thinks they’re bad, or because she thinks they’re still too naked-y? Instructor’s gonna look at them.
Spouse and I loved the anime series “Blue Period” where a young man wants to get into art school. There’s a scene with his first life drawing and he only has about ten seconds of apprehension until he gets buried by how hard it is. Later when he starts to succeed it’s so triumphant
Last panel Joyce… so precious ♡. At this point I think this is not the same drawing class Mary and Malaya are attending. Too bad, I was hoping Joyce would join them as a weird trio of troublemakers. I hope that Joe will continue to go with her to the next classes as well. Maybe he could end up helping Joyce draw the comic.
Coming up in the next Slipshine: Just a series of live figure drawing, both Joyce’s and Joe’s. Starting at stick figure level and progressing seamlessly to Sarah Deibele level.
Ofc she struggles to separate artistic nudity from sexual nudity… Shes been an intense fundie her whole life up until like, a couple weeks ago and isn’t suddenly un-repressed and instilled with all knowledge.
Honestly she’s doing really well all things considered.
Well, sexless sure! But I do at least try to put a little bit of sensuality into some of my poses. Although I mainly pose for adults who are having a fun evening with a bit of wine so I suppose the vibe is different in a university setting
today in #9chickweedlane i learned we have to be shown children learning and relearning what sex is, for Reasons, even though they already clearly know and have prepared nuanced questions about it!
also that Gran must hate, if she's still alive, how Old Juliette is the same but with gray hair
one of my favorite things is when a commenter explodes WHEN DO THESE CHARACTERS GET THERAPY but directed towards a character who canonically has a regular therapist

btw if you're one of those rando bluesky weirdos who doesn't know me but sees me in the wild being sarcastic and don't know i'm being sarcastic because you haven't taken like 30 seconds to, like, maybe look at my user profile or something, keep walking, you're not going to score internet points here

Where did Hollywood go so wrong? I thought movies were supposed to be an escape from reality, a chance to put your worries aside and not have to think about any underlying ideas or concepts. Well, not anymore.

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908.
"You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action
Joe (glancing over): “Um, your sketch pad is just covered in ding-dongs. I’ve been looking closely, the model doesn’t-”
Joyce: “It’s the only naughty bit I have experience drawing, okay?!“
Thank you for being the first comment actually relevant to the comic instead of some shilling for the next social media company.
Personal theory: Her sketchpad is full of Dorothy’s face on the model’s body. XD
Nah, she’s drawing boobs. Big boobs.
I’m sure Sal’s rich flowing chocolate hair is in there.
Haha. I wonder what it will be… Is Joe secretly an excellent artist and draftsperson? Is Joyce drawing lovingly detailed crotches or skipping that part? Is she just doing cartoons?
“it’s weird that I can acclimate to something after being exposed to it for longer than the time it takes to kneejerk”
(alt joke that I’m second guessing posting but oh well):
“I thought a naked person in the presence of others resulted in INSTANT ORGIES”
“I would say my dad as a doctor would attest otherwise, but I’m not ENTIRELY sure…?”
Yeah, Joyce gets it. It’s pretty unerotic all things considered.
Ayup. Commented on that a few days back. Life drawing is rarely sexy.
“Draw me like one of your Fre–oh dang it’s cold in here don’t you have a space heater?”
Oh, well, yes. But that’s generally one on one with a lover, usually in a warm and private place, like a bedroom. Totally different vibe.
I love that Joe sticks his tongue out when he concentrates. I do the same thing. So does my granny.
blep!
My wife and daughter refer to it as the Tongue of Concentration. It’s their shared superpower.
Also I drew Robin.
https://imgur.com/a/A2JeAdU
this is super cute!! nice drawing!
The Genki is strong in this one. Its like a frame before the Roadrunner zooms away.
We do appreciate a Robin from time to time.
Ah, she is an artist!
I figure there’s at least a 50/50 chance she’s not hiding her drawings because they’re of a naked person, but because they’re all absolutely terrible augh how am I so bad at this (etc).
Bashir: Even though they’re actually okay, and she already has her comic in the paper?
Garak: Especially because they’re actually okay.
Who can blame her? There’s nothing worse than just being okay.
Having taken life drawing classes, yeah. It is possibly the most sexless atmosphere to involve nudity ever.
I will see and raise you “autopsy”.
Ideally.
one would hope
Excuse me, I remain fully clothed while performing autopsies. That’s a mistake you only make once.
Oh dear let’s hope so!
It’s not like it’s warm.
…. so, once again, we arrive at zombies.
As long as zombies don’t arrive at us.
Hey, what have the undead ever done to you? We’re people too. And I have never had any desire to consume humans.
Wait, has Joe not flipped even one page of his sketch… easel?
Well if they’re doing quick sketches he might not be drawing them particularly big.
Maybe it’s just me, but I remember as someone who wasn’t even remotely good at art, when starting out I drew everything bigger so that it was easier to try to do ‘finer’ details.
yes, but quick sketches (15/30 seconds) you don’t really have a lotta time to draw big.
Yeah you also wouldn’t have time for finer details either so tiny sketches make sense.
I doesn’t even look like he has any paper. That may be an error on Willis’s part or maybe Joe’s drawing on the easel itself (or a sticky note?).
Maybe it’s like an etch-a-sketch.
I went back to check and he didn’t have a notepad with him when he turned up. Joyce has one cause she was bought one, and the other students showing up had their own, so the doofus is possibly too shy to ask for some paper and drawing on the easel!
Yep, he got dragged along for moral support and doesn’t have his own pad. He was definitely drawing a couple of strips ago, though.
I assumed he was poaching individual pages from Joyce’s sketchpad
I think Joyce just gave him a couple sheets out of the sketchpad Dorothy got for her.
Joe isn’t an aspiring artist, he’s just enjoying the view.
So Joyce drew a sterile, sexless person, then?
The pencil lines just kind of stop around the chest and crotch.
One page has an eraser hole in it.
Dumbing of Age Book 13: Sure, There’s a Naked Person, But There’s a Very Sterile, Sexless Vibe
…I second this motion. All in favor?
Aye!
Precisely what I came here to post.
Were gonna end up with a lot of titles
Joyce has lost all interest in art class as a result.
In my head Joyce sounded like Gollum (Andy Serkis’s interpretation) in the last panel.
I’m thinking Ep III Vader.
I didn’t say it earlier but I love how Joe has just accepted he’s taking the sit in with Joyce
Eh, he’s had worse dates.
Also with Joyce.
Funny thing is we’ve only seen Joe’s dates when they’re with Joyce.
No, we saw the date with Sarah’s sister whose name escapes me who eventually got to David Letterman’s alma mater Ball State, and Malaya in the Slipshine.
I don’t think that’s a date.
Oh my god this is a date isn’t it
Especially if they get that pizza afterwards
Joyce and Joe explaining their courtship to their their kids in twenty years like, oh, it was SO romantic. The Kids: what did you do on your first date? Did you kiss? I mean, he’s already here, may as well, right?
I’m so glad I’ve never had a class that made me sit in these chairs. This looks terrible.
Oh god I hadn’t noticed it until you pointed it out thanks I hate it.
You don’t even know, Yoto! Those chairs are terrible. We had to sit on those for whole courses and after like 2 weeks students started to bring in their own stools and pillows cause those drawing seats are trash to sit on for 10 minutes let alone over a hour.
They look extremely uncomfortable.
Not just to sit on, but also to draw on. Not everyone is that farsighted!
When those first appeared in the comic, I was like “wtf are those, how are you supposed to sit on … wait, seriously?”
More like… shadong.
The ding-dong bandit strikes again
At least she’s starting to get it.
Also: Joe: Come on, you’re already seeing a naked person in front of you.
Joyce: No! This is my drawing!
Joe: I’ll show you mine if you show me yours?
Joyce: STOP TALKING!
Model: I am both flattered and annoyed.
Joe: “Uh… she hasn’t got a…”
Joyce: “Artistic license!”
“Also probably-autistic license!”
(…sorry, as soon as I’d typed the first post, my dad joke vibes went into overdrive.)
Autistic license is when you put way too much detail into one part of your art, while almost ignoring the parts that don’t interest you.
THIS FOREARM IS BEAUTIFUL IT DOESNT NEED ELBOWS
Joyce discovers futanari.
This marks a significant stage in the evolution of the Ding Dong Bandit.
*flees for dear punning life*
Boooooo!
Wendy Weiss approves this message.
I like that Joe seems like he’s actually having a good time sketching. Wonder if he’ll get into art, too.
What is Joe drawing on anyway? Joyce clearly has a sketchbook. Is Joe just sketching on the drawing board itself?
loose pages from Joyce or the professor maybe
Ah, Joyce figured it out.
i mean i know she had religious parents growing up but with 4-5(?) brothers in the house you’d think she’d end up seeing at least one of them naked at some point lol

This is getting dangerously close to a Slipshine.
Joyce already done 3 pages and you’re still drawing on the wood, get a grip Joe~
Well spotted
If she gave him loose sheets from her sketchpad, they wouldn’t be curled over the top of the easel thing.
Oh at the very least he’s gonna end up IN the comic…
not if she can get some white-out
It’s a shame, but I don’t think we’ve seen them there since last semester, so not surprising.
i adore joe’s face in the first panel
He bleps when he concentrates.
I mean, they still straddling their benches
Joyce, eventually teacher will call everybody to pass in all tables to see and talk about each work. And they will want to see yours, too.
[Shocked Joyce face dot png] intensifies
Coming up in the next Slipshine: Just a series of live figure drawing, both Joyce’s and Joe’s. Starting at stick figure level and progressing seamlessly to Sarah Deibele level.
I, too, wanna see Joyce’s drawings
It’s almost like it’s not sexual at all
At most there’s like, sexual subtext, but like, seriously, what is this, a porno? Grow up
Also i wanna see her drawing lol, that has to be good
Ofc she struggles to separate artistic nudity from sexual nudity… Shes been an intense fundie her whole life up until like, a couple weeks ago and isn’t suddenly un-repressed and instilled with all knowledge.
