Sierra’s dad seems to be a pretty standup guy. Joyce’s father is no saint, but he’s probably better than her mother. Carla’s father, I’m guessing he did a thing or two he shouldn’t be proud of to get where he is, but at least he’s supportive (possibly to the point of enabling).
I mean I don’t agree with you but kinda get it? The sourness can be overpowering for a some people, but it’s also got spiciness and a kind of savoriness like butter that I and others like?
Mustard is part of the local culture where I grew up, but also the tang of mustard combined with sweetness of ketchup just taste good honey mustard good for most cold sandwiches. Brown mustard goes good on hot dog if you want a bit of kick but not so much on a cold cut or burger also I won’t eat ketchup with brown mustard.
I suspect something ‘way back in prehistory selected for the gene that causes (many of) us to deliberately ingest chemicals that plants evolved to repel or kill animals that would eat them, and enjoy spiting said plants. In you face, mustard! I’m looking at you, horseradish! Take that, much of the genus capsicum!
But that’s the thing, ketchup is so sweet that when you mix the two together (as in Joyce’s burger) you get more than halfway to honey mustard’s sweetness, plus you get the nice tomato flavour from ketchup. It’s like less-candylike honey mustard plus tomato.
Personally I like more than just those two on a hamburger but I get the attraction of the simpler flavour profile.
i’m not rly into many condiments but i’d tolerate/wipe off mustard and wouldn’t mind a lingering taste versus a remake compared to like mayo (ironically i love eggs, i guess it’s the vinegar)

Plastic recycling is basically a scam. (Tho’ before 45’s trade war we used to sell recycled and pelletised type 1 to China by the literal boatload. Yes, sell. It was part of our trade surplus with them. Maybe they were just dumping it but if so I can’t tell you why.) The rest not so much.

IIRC, a lot of it was electronics – remote controls, old phones, TVs, tablets, computers, etc. – that China was processing for the Rare-Earth Metals used because it was cheaper than mining it themselves. But since sanctions made importing US electronics more expensive, China had to set up its own domestic industry and now it doesn’t need to rummage through the west’s rubbish even if we wanted them to.
No, no, type 1 plastic. The stuff most pop bottles are made of. We processed it into pellets and shipped it off (for money!) to China for them to make new plastic things.
They don’t buy it anymore, but for several years they were. Changeover happened at the same time as trade war started so I assumed it was cause-and-effect, but maybe it wasn’t, idk.
I was puzzling: so this was around the end of WWII? Did we even have Type 1s in quantity then? It took me about a minute to click that “45” was probably a presidency ordinal, not a year.
Please don’t take this as a defense of Portokali, but I feel like people like to blame him for problems much older – plastic recycling has always been a farce. (I remember the tribe where I was living at the time started a missive with “the Trump administration…” regarding an issue that had been going on for decades. I told my mother that I’d heard of it in the Obama years, and she said “why did they mention Trump, then?” “You donated!”)
I mean plastic recycling definitely is and paper is not nearly as good as advertised, but burning chemical washed paper and plastic inside a closed space is how you get cancer not stars.
It wouldn’t be a lie if he and Joyce do eventually bang. But not in a creepy stalkerish sort of plan, but in a “My intentions are pure sir and or madaam, I love your daught….roommate.” sort of way.
I think they’re both overestimating how much Sarah will care and underestimating how obvious they’ve both been about their mutual attraction before dating. Maybe Sarah doesn’t know but this will be far from a surprise.
When you put it like that, there’s a small chance that Sarah will be lightly pleased by the perception that Liz has lost a beau to someone else, given Liz’s history with Sarah’s boyfriends. I don’t think it’ll be, like, active glee, but we do know Sarah enjoys people getting their comeuppance and though that is not really the case here, the appearance of such may soften Sarah’s disposition enough that Joe won’t feel the wrath of her baseball bat.
I don’t know that Sarah’s been present for most of the Joy(Joe/Joyce) moments. She also might think Joe and Liz hooked up, but I don’t really remember how Liz framed it other than expressing her obvious interest.
In any case, I do think Sarah might be critical of the whole thing, obviously, but it might also be complicated by her dealing with the Raidah/Lucy shit making her either more careful or less.
I’m in the minority here, I guess. If Sarah knew I think there’s a decent chance that Joe would still be alive, and I think it is overly optimistic to just assume that she’d grant him the mercy of a quick death.
I’m really interested in how this is going to play out. I doubt Sarah’s going to give her blessing, exactly, but how critical she is will be interesting to see, especially if Liz or the Raidah and Lucy stuff has any impact on her handling of it.
Part of me is expecting Sarah to subvert their expectations and be wholly supportive in a “it’s better if her first time is with someone experienced” kind of way
That’s literally the joke I was making. It’s the standard Dick’s Drive-In joke around here, along with Eating Dick’s By the Bagful, Everybody Loves Dick’s, and so on.
Ketchup, lettuce, and cheese are my go-to’s. Tomatoes, onions, and/or pickles might be added if I’m feeling adventurous. I also happen to prefer turkey and veggie burgers over beef, but if I don’t have either of those options, I’m not too picky (at least, not anymore. I used to be a lot more staunchly anti-beef in my tastes).
Preferably? Mushroom swiss with grilled onions, avocado/guacamole, and maybe brown mustard. Unless it’s thick sharp cheddar, tomato, mayo, mustard, and mixed greens. I’m also partial to a good black’n’bleu.
I just go for the classic lettuce-tomato-onion-mustard-relish-mayo combo, heavy on the onion and mustard. Ideally, the patty should be grilled over charcoal.
prefer breakfast sandwiches but plain is my go to, otherwise a bit of a ‘lighter’ cheese like swiss, and egg, and occasionally bacon. tho shame some ‘gourmet’ places charge you more per topping versus charging you less if you leave off stuff like lettuce/onions
Y’know what a Dagwood sandwich is? That’s essentially what I likely burgers to be like. I frequently stack up enough toppings (and variety of toppings) to make my burgers 4″ tall, uncrushed. I am also not very picky, but I do love Tex-Mex inspired toppings; jalapenos, salsa, guacamole, avocado… A standard California Burger (LTO, mayo, pickles, cheese) is also good.
I’ll put just about any of your usual toppings on it, minus relish, but my absolute favorite combo is slightly runny fried egg, pepperjack cheese and salsa.
Depends on the place and my mood. My usual Five Guys order is lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, ketchup, sautéed mushrooms, and jalapenos. But I love a bacon-bleu, a mushroom swiss, and chili burgers too.
The main place I’m going to get a burger (well, veggie patty) is Red Robin, and the main one I’m going to get is the Banzai– teriyaki glaze, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and grilled pineapple.
AT home I’m more likely to go with pretty standard toppings– ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, tomatoes, onions.
The two are way cuter together than they have any right to be.

And i’m not necessarily one for British-isms(?) but surprised we also wouldn’t call them ‘gherkins’, which might be a specific type, and a little weird unless you grow up using that word, but technically you can ‘pickle’ anything like in korea ‘mu’ is pickled radish and kimchi being pickled cabbage as a common thing so i imagine if some places were more into ‘pickling’ you could have your choice of ‘pickled cucumbers’ versus carrots etc
The twist is that Joe is not still alive, or at least not for long. Everything with Joe and Joyce dating has only happened in Joe’s mind as Sarah’s baseball bat descends towards his skill after she found out what almost happened to her sister, ala Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
I think my favourite part is that he isn’t telling her she can let go of her anxieties coz he’s there, but that she can relax them by a small amount – I like that he’s realistic about what he can do to help!
Also, I think Sarah will tolerate him dating Joyce if it makes her happy, on the understanding that if he hurts her the baseball bat will be knocking his balls out of the field.

IIRC, a lot of it was electronics – remote controls, old phones, TVs, tablets, computers, etc. – that China was processing for the Rare-Earth Metals used because it was cheaper than mining it themselves. But since sanctions made importing US electronics more expensive, China had to set up its own domestic industry and now it doesn’t need to rummage through the west’s rubbish even if we wanted them to.

When you put it like that, there’s a small chance that Sarah will be lightly pleased by the perception that Liz has lost a beau to someone else, given Liz’s history with Sarah’s boyfriends. I don’t think it’ll be, like, active glee, but we do know Sarah enjoys people getting their comeuppance and though that is not really the case here, the appearance of such may soften Sarah’s disposition enough that Joe won’t feel the wrath of her baseball bat.
I don’t know that Sarah’s been present for most of the Joy(Joe/Joyce) moments. She also might think Joe and Liz hooked up, but I don’t really remember how Liz framed it other than expressing her obvious interest.
In any case, I do think Sarah might be critical of the whole thing, obviously, but it might also be complicated by her dealing with the Raidah/Lucy shit making her either more careful or less.

I’m in the minority here, I guess. If Sarah knew I think there’s a decent chance that Joe would still be alive, and I think it is overly optimistic to just assume that she’d grant him the mercy of a quick death.

I’m really interested in how this is going to play out. I doubt Sarah’s going to give her blessing, exactly, but how critical she is will be interesting to see, especially if Liz or the Raidah and Lucy stuff has any impact on her handling of it.

I’m partial to plain with cheese, myself. Though if I do get some condiments I’ll get some tomato/lettuce and mayo/Ketchupon it.
My go-to burger is a turkey curry burger with mustard and caramelized onions.
Otherwise if it’s from like Wendy’s or McDonalds, a bacon burger with ketchup and mustard

Ketchup, lettuce, and cheese are my go-to’s. Tomatoes, onions, and/or pickles might be added if I’m feeling adventurous. I also happen to prefer turkey and veggie burgers over beef, but if I don’t have either of those options, I’m not too picky (at least, not anymore. I used to be a lot more staunchly anti-beef in my tastes).
Cheeseburger with ketchup, mustard, pickles, tomato, a bit of lettuce (pref romaine), grilled mushrooms if they’re on offer. No onions.

I just go for the classic lettuce-tomato-onion-mustard-relish-mayo combo, heavy on the onion and mustard. Ideally, the patty should be grilled over charcoal.
Also ideally while you’ve got the charcoal grill out, wrap some corn-on-the-cob in aluminium foil and grill that, too. Christ it’s good.
prefer breakfast sandwiches but plain is my go to, otherwise a bit of a ‘lighter’ cheese like swiss, and egg, and occasionally bacon. tho shame some ‘gourmet’ places charge you more per topping versus charging you less if you leave off stuff like lettuce/onions

Y’know what a Dagwood sandwich is? That’s essentially what I likely burgers to be like. I frequently stack up enough toppings (and variety of toppings) to make my burgers 4″ tall, uncrushed. I am also not very picky, but I do love Tex-Mex inspired toppings; jalapenos, salsa, guacamole, avocado… A standard California Burger (LTO, mayo, pickles, cheese) is also good.
Swiss cheese is nice, but no American cheese, ever. No onions. Lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Pickle slices are good; jalapeño slices are better.
I’ll put just about any of your usual toppings on it, minus relish, but my absolute favorite combo is slightly runny fried egg, pepperjack cheese and salsa.
Cheese (or not), lettuce, pickle, onion. No sauces.
Pickles: sweet, bread-and-butter, or dill if that’s all that’s available.
Depends on the place and my mood. My usual Five Guys order is lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, ketchup, sautéed mushrooms, and jalapenos. But I love a bacon-bleu, a mushroom swiss, and chili burgers too.
The main place I’m going to get a burger (well, veggie patty) is Red Robin, and the main one I’m going to get is the Banzai– teriyaki glaze, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and grilled pineapple.
AT home I’m more likely to go with pretty standard toppings– ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, tomatoes, onions.

And i’m not necessarily one for British-isms(?) but surprised we also wouldn’t call them ‘gherkins’, which might be a specific type, and a little weird unless you grow up using that word, but technically you can ‘pickle’ anything like in korea ‘mu’ is pickled radish and kimchi being pickled cabbage as a common thing so i imagine if some places were more into ‘pickling’ you could have your choice of ‘pickled cucumbers’ versus carrots etc

Never. But I did watch “Fantastic Voyage” with Raquel Welch when I was a kid, so they must have shrunk Willis down to microscopic size.
I think my favourite part is that he isn’t telling her she can let go of her anxieties coz he’s there, but that she can relax them by a small amount – I like that he’s realistic about what he can do to help!
Also, I think Sarah will tolerate him dating Joyce if it makes her happy, on the understanding that if he hurts her the baseball bat will be knocking his balls out of the field.
