Designer: Okay, so we’ve got the cross in the top left corner, what do you want the rest of it to be?
Minister: I don’t know man, we’ve got all these different denominations and they all want different things and I can’t get any of them to compromise. I’m this close to just throwing up a white flag.
        Designer: White flag? Got it.

Considering it was designed by American christians I’d assume they shoved it in the corner like that in emulation of the US flag. Now why they just left that area completely blank? No clue

I still can’t say the pledge to the American flag without instinctively saying the pledge to the AWANA flag right after it. As I’ve grown up, I’m not super comfortable with pledging a super high level of allegiance to America, so, I think that really, putting that pledge on the same level as my allegiance to AWANA is probably healthy…

Yeah, the one listed in the Wiki is a bit cringe-y, but that’s about it. That said, Joyce comes from a non-denominational hyper-fundie church, so I suspect that theirs is a lot more off-the-rails than the ones you’ll find in a quick Google search.

based on the Willis tweet posted in here it’s just the pledge to the Christian flag. as a person who grew up in an non-denominational hyper-fundie household, I would have been surprised if it was a different thing.

There is worse. There’s a video that was linked with the song, “I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb,” which made me squirm when they ran it during the service, and that was years before the latest craziness. If I saw it for the first time today, I’d probably slip out the back door and call the FBI.

I guess it got a lot of members fired up. Me, it reminded of Heinlein’s “If This Goes On….” and especially the cover art for its collection Revolt in 2100. Not the effect that was expected, I think.

Well, logically speaking, the more recent items would be on the top. While Joyce started DoA rather horrendously naive, she’s also come a long way in a short amount of time. Ergo, she probably got a little more open-minded and less brainwashed as she got older.

So yeah, the deeper you dig, the more horrors will be unleashed.

Incognito Mode (in Chrome) seems to work for keeping searches out of future ads, so probably it also works for keeping searches out of future searches. Ctrl-Shift-N to get the Incognito window.

Another strategy: when I get too many annoying ads, I do some (non-Incognito) searches for something expensive and technical like scuba gear or forklifts. I don’t get fewer ads, but they tend to be a lot less annoying.

Honestly I find the American pledge of Allegiance creepier than the Christian one. If you aren’t going to ally with your gods and your co-coreligionists then you probably should be in a different religion that you would. America on the other hand I was born in this shithole and can’t get out.

We also have a lot of cities and states with Christian symbols on their flags and coat of arms. But those are flags that represent earthly institutions that happen to value a religion. Not flags for a religion.

When divine right of kings was standard, those same flags were flags for a religion. England’s flag is a crusader flag.
And the national sects can have their own flags, Church of Sweden’s is a red cross on a yellow field, with a yellow crown in the middle. Americans didn’t invent political Christianity, political Christianity, ironically, has just festered here.

Is it time to dunk on that stupid-ass Flag Pledge? I got in trouble so many times in grade school* for not performing my section of the ritual, it actually wound up holding back my education. You’re supposed to stand up, put your right hand over your heart, stare at the American Flag that’s somewhere in the room, and recite the incantation with the rest of your class. I routinely ignored some combination of these “rules”, usually all of them, because it creeped me the fuck out to see everyone in the room chanting at a piece of cloth. And for the first couple years of my schoolin’, they took personal offense to that and gave me after-school detention on a weekly basis. Eventually they realised I wasn’t playing their stupid game and just left me the fuck alone, but they did warn each other that I was “a troublemaker”, so that in every interaction I had with faculty, they assumed I was “giving them an attitude” no matter what I said, especially when I did what they asked.

And that’s for the non-religious performative patriotism. I can only imagine how much worse it would be for a Christian kid who didn’t participate in the indoctrination ritual.

Not as sorry as the ones who put me through it. By the time I was 10, I’d very thoroughly learned the meaning of “respect”, and I made sure to let every authority figure know they didn’t deserve any just for existing. Sure, they were all too stupid and proud to not double down, but so was I, and I made it their problem at every opportunity.

That sounds kinda cool and kinda stressful and awful…

But i really agree. People mistake respect for *obedience to authority*, when all that respect actually means is to treat people with regards to how they want to be treated. Which needs to go both ways, unlike obedience.

Which is kinda weird. But that thing where pledging allegiance ~200 times a year whilst well under the age at which I was legally responsible for my own actions wasn’t in any way binding… if it was, that could have been the easiest path to citizenship the US ever forgot to close up?

It always feels super weird to have them recite the pledge, so I don’t, even when it’s lead over the intercom these days. Thanks for including ellipses. They represent the creepy, stop-and-go way we were taught to recite the incantation. It was so irritating and took so goddamn long, because faculty would get actually angry at you for not pausing for at least a full second every few words. One kid in my class would pause extra long when it was their turn to lead, and I got one of my only remotely-justified suspensions after I punched them in the mouth and screamed in their ear to hurry up so we could all go to the bathroom. (I used to be violently impatient, y’see. I’m not proud of it, but I’m also not ashamed because it was 20 years ago, get over it.)

Also we all had to line up outside the bathroom in alphabetical order by surname and wait one-by-one to piss, even though there were multiple toilets in each bathroom, because we might talk to each other during the one minute it took, but one of the kids whose surname ended in A would take ten minutes on their own and it somehow wasn’t a problem.

Joke’s on them, I had ADHD and couldn’t sit still if I wasn’t allowed to read my book. The Flag Pledge was nothing but an obstacle between me and Dragonriders of Pern, and the faculty were all too stupid to understand why that wasn’t acceptable for longer than 30 seconds.

All my grade school classrooms recited the pledge, until my 6th grade class (late ‘70s). My teacher cheerfully explained to us that she [wasn’t a Christian] and wouldn’t be making us recite anything that included professing a god belief. Or something like that. And we didn’t. This was my first clue that it was optional.

Not to be a contrarian, but I definitely wasn’t “strong”, and I definitely wouldn’t call it courage. I was just angry 24/7 from incessant bullying and had absolutely no patience for anything that didn’t immediately interest me, unless I was given an explanation for why it was important. And even then, an explanation would only buy them so much time before I started taking that anger out on whatever/whoever was closest.

This was before it got trendy to shoot up your school because you didn’t like what was being served for lunch that day.

You think that’s creepy? I grew up expected to say that and also the Texas State Flag Pledge. Including the line “I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas,” which frankly borders on outright sedition. Though on the bright side, I don’t recall ever getting in trouble for not saying it (I still said the American one all the way through high school, but noped out of the Texas one around ninth grade or so).

I remember I had to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in 1st grade, before my family switched us over to the neighboring school district that didn’t require the pledge. I always thought it was dumb, and when I grew older I realized it’s creepy to make a bunch of young kids recite a pledge of allegiance daily to a country they just happened to be born in.

I said the US Pledge of Allegiance every school day during elementary school; then, thankfully, the middle school and high school I went to really only did it on 9/11. Then, just a couple years after I graduated, it became the law in my state that public schools had to do the Pledge of Allegiance (technically have to give students the “opportunity” to recite it each school day).

Since I then went on to work in schools, there were many mornings when I’d be subbing in a classroom when the PA would come on, sometimes for announcements and the pledge, sometimes just the pledge. And I’d just kinda stand there awkwardly and hope a kid didn’t ask about why I didn’t participate. (This is fine and, in the same law, protected for students; it does not specify staff, and I’ve heard of people getting weird about it.)

At the school I’m currently at… well, the classroom I was in last year just didn’t do it. I guess we were supposed to, but no one told us, so whoopsie. And this year seems like it will be odd because the school doesn’t have a PA system– it’s supposed to be teacher-lead– but the teacher I’m working with isn’t a US citizen, so she’s not doing it, and I’m really not looking to do it either.

Si, I also notice a general pattern among christian conservative coalitions and alt-right movements in the US, that a large part of it depends on keeping themselves carefully ignorant of their own beliefs. For not only would it scare the shit out of them if they actually realized what they believe in, but knowing and being obliged to defend a coherent worldview would otherwise impair their ability to argue effectively.

But can I get all staff in the school onboard with the idea that “Yeah, it says this in our handbook, but it’s shitty, so don’t”? Doubtful. What about the staff of the other schools run by this organization? I don’t even know them.

I think the issue is when a child asks a teacher to use a certain name or certain pronouns when speaking or referring to the child. In that case, there would be many witnesses (and tattletales) that the teacher knew the child’s identity.

Also, if a child finally does gather the courage to tell the child’s parents, then, a teacher’s having previously said, “Just don’t tell anyone you and I had this conversation” puts the teacher in a much more legally precarious position.

Wow, I had straight up forgotten about the christian pledge of allegiance till I googled it – and then I realized that the version I saw wasn’t the version I grew up with. I found an image that paired the CFPoA with the Bible pledge of allegiance and the US pledge of allegiance – and my brain could remember saying the bible pledge in VBS and I could “hear” the exact cadence of how we said it with so many childrens’ voices.

Now I’m bothered by the fact I don’t remember the second half of the CFPoA that I can’t seem to find on the internet. Neurospicy gonna neurospicy, I guess.

Who should be the default doodle for Book 14?

Where did Hollywood go so wrong? I thought movies were supposed to be an escape from reality, a chance to put your worries aside and not have to think about any underlying ideas or concepts. Well, not anymore. theonion.com/you-can...

You Can’t Even Watch A Movie Anymore Without Seeing Some Theme Explored
I’ve loved movies ever since I was a little kid. Just stepping into that dark theater, with the smell of fresh popcorn, was like being transported to a whole other world. It used to be so magical. But now I’m thinking about boycotting movies altogether. Why? Because I can’t seem to watch one anymore without […]

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908. "You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.
AI generated ad by a company called Travello showing the 10 most visited cities in Europe, except the cities are hilariously poorly placed. London is in Wales, Paris is in Ireland, Rome is in France, Rom (yes like Rome but without an E) is in Spain, Barcelona is in Morocco, Prague is in Germany, Vienna is in Italy, Istanbul is in Austria, Milan is in Libya, and Antalya is correctly shown as in Turkey but is in the wrong place. Also a few of the borders like Switzerland and Austria or Hungary and Slovenia are missing.

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action

This @bransonreese.bsky.social four panel is never completely out of my head.
Four panel comic by Brandon Reese titled Animal Crackers. In each panel Groucho Marx is speaking.

1 - One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas
2 - How I worked up the courage to kill a living thing I'll never know.
3 - (silent)
4 - They mourn their dead, as we do.
