I recognise all those catchphrases and I was born three years after Laugh-In ended, in a country that, as far as I know, never showed it. And I have no idea how, except that I must have picked it up from the internet somewhere.
I watched the first run of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In on our Zenith B&W tv. If memory serves, they walked a fine line slipping things past the network censors – a prime time show was not allowed to say much about Vietnam.
I had literally never heard of Laugh-In before, and I still recognized the phrase just from general use in pop culture. I believe I saw it in an Archie comic, and was admittedly confused about the usage.
She may have (probably) has seen it a few times in the last 6 months, and asked Sarah or Dorothy why people were putting socks on their doors. Or she looked up the internet.
Capitalism aside, it’d be amusing if a sock company /did/ exclusively produce socks of that purpose with ‘fun’ patterns if not some kinda other sign like their signboards that’s a do not disturb with college students as their audience/customer base. Or like, a trojan pack came with a disposable sock for that purpose too for funsies XD

Wow, that is crazy to me. I lived in the dorms on what is rated as one of the safest campuses in the US, and still locked my door when I left. Just seems like such a simple and obvious safety precaution.
Sometimes, you decide socks are too visible and put a sticky note on the door instead and sometimes it falls off. Sometimes your roommate doesn’t see it and decides to come in. Sometimes they lead a conga line of 8 of you and your partner’s shared acquaintances/friends.
Basically, the sock is to protect your roommate and whatever massive party of people they’ve decided needs to be in your closet-sized room with them.
I would be surprised if these days roommates just send a discreet (or possibly not so discreet) text. I was in college just as smartphones were becoming a thing and I don’t think I heard of anyone actually using a sock, it was just a general college meme people would reference (or maybe jokingly putting one on someone’s door as a small prank).
it takes time and effort to lock/unlock. So if someone knocks, you can just say “come in”, or your roommate doesn’t need to take their keys to go to the bathroom sort of thing.
Locking is what we did when we were leaving for an extended period of time and didn’t want anyone to steal and hide the door.

Very good, it is good to see that the boys are given a chance to grow without the need for the unjustified hatred that many in the comments have expressed that make them unfairly become villains.
I will take the risk, but I confess that it is difficult for me to take Joyce’s progress seriously (yes, I know that she went through a horrible torment that caused a turning point in her life), I felt that there was no sincerity in the differences with Becky and I only use that last resource to try to go deeper.
The only thing where I saw a convincing change was in stopping being a jerk to Dina.
Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but if things get out of control, the brunette (her hair color doesn’t look blonde to me) won’t want help and will let her pride create chaos.
I get that. Certainly there’s a lot more that could and should be continued to work on.
But also it’s important to remember that Joyce has only had a few short months to work on changing. Self-improvement can take a long time, even with maximum effort and good success. The most meaningful change to me in this time so far has been her desire to change. It’s been a touch over 13 years for us, but if one assumes we’re deep into February the timeline of the strip is under 6 months. (No idea if that assumption is right, but it still illustrates the scale well even if I’m off by weeks)
The time gap of the story and the readers makes it a very difficult challenge.
I’m not saying that the changes will come to everyone immediately, I just wanted to get it out of my system, because I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but here in the comments I noticed a peculiar fight that I call “Let’s support Joyce because she is the only one who deserves support and the rest deserve nothing”
And maybe you don’t agree with me, but notice that many (ironically) have put Joyce on a pedestal just because she eliminated God as a source of objective morality, and yes, okay, HER DECISION IS UNDERSTANDABLE, but the way How they have defended it and that many project themselves with her, it has made it difficult for me to consider its progress.
It has already been seen that now if they let Joyce grow up alone, fine, let her make her mistakes correctly.
Finally, Joyce should be grateful that Sarah told them to calm her hormones, because if it had been Dorothy, the problem would have occurred.

I do agree that her change so far has not been significant. Certainly she hasn’t broken free of really any of the harmful thought patterns she was taught.
And you’re right about the trend in the comments. I may have taken your comments slightly out of their intended context because I try to keep a firm wall between how most of the comments section feels about almost anything and how I feel about it, so I tend to skim or skip a whole lot of comments once they start making me roll my eyes.
I think part of the reason Joyce gets so much leeway is that she sometimes gets portrayed as a protagonist, and even more so she’s semi-autobiographical for Willis, so I think the comments section is pre-disposed to cut her extra slack. I’m sure I’m subject to some of that as well. I do try to give most characters leeway to fail without getting hateful. I fail outright with Jennifer, but that’s partly because the way she shows so much disdain for others really pushes my buttons, and that may just be a me problem.
Precisely, that is why I decided to wait for the tension in the comments to calm down a little and be able to express what I wanted to say. I admit that I felt terrified about how to be impeccable with my words, I felt like I was walking in a minefield. And well, the list of characters is enormous and everyone is free to choose their favorites and not favorites, I like Sal, Dorothy, Jacob and let’s say that Joe has generated a certain sympathy in me. Becky is a tightrope of sympathy and boredom, Mary and Raidah were designed to be hated by everyone, I think they are the ones that we all share a common hatred.

Having followed this comic since roughly year three and knowing Joyce’s background, if I were to see a sock on her dorm room doorknob I’d assume that it was SARAH, not Joyce, in there gettin’ it on with someone. Joyce would be the one leaving the door wide open so that people could see that nuthin’ funky was going on.

She’s embarrassed about people thinking she’s having sex. Joe has his own hangups to work on, and she has hers. If there is no mutual understanding of that, this relationship will not work.
Remember what she said a few strips ago about change. She’s got stuff to work through and some of her base impulses might initially be in control before she has a chance to think it through.
I really want to “like” Sarah, as opposed to “understand and tolerate her”, so I’m hoping she starts actually taking in new information at some point soon here instead of coasting on anger and beginning-of-year impressions.
Joe has explicitly and implicitly encouraged her to hate him, within the past two weeks, not just in September. Even after they realize he can’t be her hate sink anymore, for Joyce’s sake, she actually needs to see the new Joe, who he’s trying to become. Forgiveness is not obligatory, and I think Joe understands that, and will probably be accommodating as he figures out how to make amends, so that she can see the new information.

Without knowing what’s been happening between them, it seems like this came out of nowhere, which fits very easily into Joe’s pickup artist shit

Basically, the sock is to protect your roommate and whatever massive party of people they’ve decided needs to be in your closet-sized room with them.

I would be surprised if these days roommates just send a discreet (or possibly not so discreet) text. I was in college just as smartphones were becoming a thing and I don’t think I heard of anyone actually using a sock, it was just a general college meme people would reference (or maybe jokingly putting one on someone’s door as a small prank).

Locking is what we did when we were leaving for an extended period of time and didn’t want anyone to steal and hide the door.

Very good, it is good to see that the boys are given a chance to grow without the need for the unjustified hatred that many in the comments have expressed that make them unfairly become villains.
I will take the risk, but I confess that it is difficult for me to take Joyce’s progress seriously (yes, I know that she went through a horrible torment that caused a turning point in her life), I felt that there was no sincerity in the differences with Becky and I only use that last resource to try to go deeper.
The only thing where I saw a convincing change was in stopping being a jerk to Dina.
Maybe I’m speaking too soon, but if things get out of control, the brunette (her hair color doesn’t look blonde to me) won’t want help and will let her pride create chaos.

I get that. Certainly there’s a lot more that could and should be continued to work on.
But also it’s important to remember that Joyce has only had a few short months to work on changing. Self-improvement can take a long time, even with maximum effort and good success. The most meaningful change to me in this time so far has been her desire to change. It’s been a touch over 13 years for us, but if one assumes we’re deep into February the timeline of the strip is under 6 months. (No idea if that assumption is right, but it still illustrates the scale well even if I’m off by weeks)

The time gap of the story and the readers makes it a very difficult challenge.
I’m not saying that the changes will come to everyone immediately, I just wanted to get it out of my system, because I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but here in the comments I noticed a peculiar fight that I call “Let’s support Joyce because she is the only one who deserves support and the rest deserve nothing”
And maybe you don’t agree with me, but notice that many (ironically) have put Joyce on a pedestal just because she eliminated God as a source of objective morality, and yes, okay, HER DECISION IS UNDERSTANDABLE, but the way How they have defended it and that many project themselves with her, it has made it difficult for me to consider its progress.
It has already been seen that now if they let Joyce grow up alone, fine, let her make her mistakes correctly.
Finally, Joyce should be grateful that Sarah told them to calm her hormones, because if it had been Dorothy, the problem would have occurred.

I do agree that her change so far has not been significant. Certainly she hasn’t broken free of really any of the harmful thought patterns she was taught.
And you’re right about the trend in the comments. I may have taken your comments slightly out of their intended context because I try to keep a firm wall between how most of the comments section feels about almost anything and how I feel about it, so I tend to skim or skip a whole lot of comments once they start making me roll my eyes.
I think part of the reason Joyce gets so much leeway is that she sometimes gets portrayed as a protagonist, and even more so she’s semi-autobiographical for Willis, so I think the comments section is pre-disposed to cut her extra slack. I’m sure I’m subject to some of that as well. I do try to give most characters leeway to fail without getting hateful. I fail outright with Jennifer, but that’s partly because the way she shows so much disdain for others really pushes my buttons, and that may just be a me problem.
Precisely, that is why I decided to wait for the tension in the comments to calm down a little and be able to express what I wanted to say. I admit that I felt terrified about how to be impeccable with my words, I felt like I was walking in a minefield. And well, the list of characters is enormous and everyone is free to choose their favorites and not favorites, I like Sal, Dorothy, Jacob and let’s say that Joe has generated a certain sympathy in me. Becky is a tightrope of sympathy and boredom, Mary and Raidah were designed to be hated by everyone, I think they are the ones that we all share a common hatred.

Joe has explicitly and implicitly encouraged her to hate him, within the past two weeks, not just in September. Even after they realize he can’t be her hate sink anymore, for Joyce’s sake, she actually needs to see the new Joe, who he’s trying to become. Forgiveness is not obligatory, and I think Joe understands that, and will probably be accommodating as he figures out how to make amends, so that she can see the new information.
