I get confused too. Like what exactly happened Sunday? Was that the party? I think there should be an official calendar or something. I’m sure it’s probably been charted out to know what happened for every in comic day that has passed.
Parents would have been Saturday. Church and their breakup were the next day.
And while all that played a role, the fight was really triggered by him not saying “I love you” back after she prompted for it a couple of times. It all goes back to her taking his casual “I love that about you” far too seriously – and then him not correcting her and prompting that fight on the spot.
The parent fight is still ridiculous. She knew they were racist, he warned her, she pushed him into trying to spend time with them despite that, and when he didn’t stand up to his parents despite him telling her how complicated the situation was for him and how conflicted he was, she got upset.
She didn’t really deserve better because she forced herself into the situation for her own gratification rather than accept Walky’s initial assessment that ‘my parents suck’.
Their whole deal was only two weeks, in-universe? Wow. Comic time befits the emotional weight Lucy put on this. We the audience have seen it at much greater length. I had bickered about it with people on reddit – so that must have been a year and a half ago.
Yeah, she was doing that creepy thing some people do and hanging around him with the explicit hope of dating him while pretending it was about friendship.
It’s deeply divided into two factions that have opposing interpretations of the name, but neither group has split off yet because both refuse to cede the URL to the other.
If he doesn’t then who cares? Lucy would probably not like that he was kissing another girl behind his gfs back after faking like she was his gf to meet his brother either.
Now that Jacob is part of this I am starting to get curious about IU’s layout. I know some of the walking group attend the same class (Robin’s political science and/or Prof. Whatever his name is’ chemistry) but do they all have classes in the same direction? Are some of them doubling back around?
Looks like academic buildings are more to the south and west, while a lot of the dorms are south and east, with sports and support more toward the north.
On one hand, it mostly matches the real one. Most of the classes we’ve seen are in the west part of campus (I don’t know about CS or life drawing), and Read and Forest are kind of central/east, near the south part of campus. McNutt is north of there.
On the other hand, Dumbiverse Read is probably physically impossible, if the sun rises and sets the way it does in real life.
As a friend of mine (who is a paralegal) responds whenever someone asks her why she keeps arguing with what can only be best described as the internet’s bottom-feeders*:
OH, RIGHT, YES, I hadn’t looked at your handle I *REMEMBER* you from those Twitter threads and the threadnought. =D
I don’t think I know her well enough to call her a FRIEND, but!
(… god, the fact that that saga resulted in two people getting recruited to create a highly functioning law team that is currently on the precipice of pantsing Elon is. Truly incredible.)
Absolutely, but I do think there is something to not loving interlopers in your friend group. Lucy more or less decided with the mild help of Walky to join a friend group where nobody was really down to have her there? And while many of them are pretty open friendly people and Sarah is coming around, she’s still inserted herself into a friend group and some people are still not going to love that if after more exposure they don’t really get along.
Aww, I love that Sal is looking out for her brother, occasional asshat that he is. And as much as I wish Sal was wrong to look on this new ‘fling’ with skepticism, I don’t actually see Jacob and Lucy as compatible. Jacob sees himself as always needing to improve, to measure up to his brother, while Lucy has always been pursuing a relationship to justify getting physical, based on the demands of religion. Can’t be a slut, three dates. I’ll be curious how Jacob responds to Lucy’s insistence.
I don’t see how Sal is “looking out” for Walky here, or how she’s being skeptical of Lucy and Jacob. If anything, her assessment of how quickly his relationship with Lucy would end was more likely based on her well-documented lack of esteem for him rather than anything to do with her.
Also, what is Lucy insisting on here? That Sal not misconstrue the facts of her last relationship (which ended days ago in canon)? I think you’ve just reduced Lucy down to an oversimplified level. Yeah, she was horny to the point of being preoccupied by it during her relationship with Walky, but that doesn’t mean she was always just looking to get laid. It wasn’t even an established part of her character until she started dating Walky. She just demonstrated that she doesn’t care about the “three date” rule anymore, either, so that’s not even an accurate assessment of her character.
I mean, she let Lucy give Walky the business at the party, I’d say it’s pretty tame to point out that the relationship didn’t last very long, and wonderful symmetry with Lucy’s “two whole days” comment regarding Walky’s rekindled relationship with Dorothy.
I always use “fling” to refer to a situation with more canoodling between folks than Walky and Lucy ever had, maybe compressed into a short time. Of course Sal doesn’t know the limits of the canoodling they (didn’t) have.
I feel like Lucy clarifying that isn’t really a win for her.
“Told’ja it would only last two weeks.”
“Actually it was even less than that.”
Feels like kind of a self burn.
Dayum. I (almost) don’t even have anything to say, that was so cold. Chills. I mean, Walky isn’t even unhappy, nor was it that serious. It even put Jennifer into sexile, which is kinda funny. Sal, WTF?
Optimus Prime broke down and cried on the set of "Transformers" (2007) due to the extensive use of green screen filming. He reportedly said, "This is not why I became an actor."
“I’m just going to say it, shame on any of us who throws a trans child under the bus for thinking they’re going to get elected. That child deserves our support. Don’t worry about the pollsters calling it distractions, because we need to be the party of human dignity.”
Minnesota Star Tribune@startribune.com ⋅ 2d
Gov. Tim Walz is doubling down on trans rights — and criticizing members of his party who are retreating — at a time when the issue has become a political lightning rod nationally and back home in Minnesota.
they managed to get the arms and thighs to be different grays, which I wasn't sure they'd be able to do, the way the mold's set up
though maybe they're just producing a lot of extra thighs and/or arms in the wrong colors and throwing those away, i dunno
oh NOW Sal’s good at maths
she’s always MATH ^^ <3
I imagine there are a lot of people who have a very good grasp on this level of math who would struggle mightily in a college course.
…
Also I’m pretty sure Sal canonically is good at maths now, we had several years of tutoring and character development
Obviously Jason’s fault.
He did give her a couple of lessons in applied combinatorics.
….
…. and that was wrong, but the pun is more important than that.
He skipped calculus and went straight to injective functions on splitting fields.
She put the “gal” in Galois theory.
She did fine in math; Jason was just a crappy tutor. Danny helped her get it.
I feel like even if you’re a few days off that’s still a pretty good margin of error on the prediction.
I assumed it was a maximum anyway.
Isn’t that usually the implication?
we all called that one sal
a year ago it was Thursday
but for me…it was Tuesday
Or as I like to call it…Friday
Today is Friday in California.
Um it’s Saterday here actually. XD
I don’t think California has evolved that far past the rest of the country to be inventing new days.
For Me It Was Tuesday was at most about 4 months ago.
Sal: It’s real on these cold ass streets so pay me!
+1
Honestly, I tend to lose track of what day it’s supposed to be in-universe so the reminder is very much appreciated.
I get confused too. Like what exactly happened Sunday? Was that the party? I think there should be an official calendar or something. I’m sure it’s probably been charted out to know what happened for every in comic day that has passed.
Sunday was when they went to church together.
You can remember this because, uh, church is always on Sunday.
Except when it’s on Wednesday!
… Or Christmas, that’s only Sunday 1/7th of the time.
…. also, I think the Seventh Day Adventists do church on Saturday.
Sunday was when Lucy met his parents, saw they were casually kinda racist, and then Walky basically didn’t defend her. And that led her to realize that she liked him a whole lot more than he liked her, and realize she deserved better:
https://www.dumbingofage.com/2023/comic/book-14/02-its-the-love-i-havent-got/navigate/
Oh, totally forgot the church thing. That also happened and was the final straw in her realization. Thanks Dash.

She didn’t really deserve better because she forced herself into the situation for her own gratification rather than accept Walky’s initial assessment that ‘my parents suck’.
There’s a calendar on the wiki, too.
Yeah I definitely thought they had been dating for months since it’s been so long for us lol
Their whole deal was only two weeks, in-universe? Wow. Comic time befits the emotional weight Lucy put on this. We the audience have seen it at much greater length. I had bickered about it with people on reddit – so that must have been a year and a half ago.
In her defense, she was into him for significantly longer than they actually dated.
Yeah, she was doing that creepy thing some people do and hanging around him with the explicit hope of dating him while pretending it was about friendship.
Are there people that bicker about DOA on reddit?
Yeah, they go to r/fuckjoycebrown
honestly a plausible subreddit name
It’s deeply divided into two factions that have opposing interpretations of the name, but neither group has split off yet because both refuse to cede the URL to the other.
headcannon accepted.
Never accept a headcannon, it’s really bad for your shoulders
You’re not my real dad.
i chose to make no effort to verify this claim
It’s reddit. Bickering is its raison d’etre.
It’s like the decompressed time represents how important these days feel to the teenager characters!
honestly i definitely had semesters that ran on daily comic time. 2016 was six years long I think.
simple rounding error.
This gay-ass hetero nonsense continues, and Sal knows the score.
… I feel there was an oxymoron in there, but I’m not complaining.
Sal is always right when it comes to predicting how people will be annoying
I guess her time rooming with Malaya was good practice.
Sals like “Damn, Ah should’ve put money on that.”
The real reason Sal and Danny had to leave early.
Betting Jacob isn’t gonna like that knowledge
What that he’s a rebound? Does he have room to judge when he hooked up with her the same night he was having a hard time Swoozing Sarah?
Let’s be honest, Sarah had a hard swoozing Jacob.
*Hard time. But you know what? This way is funnier.
If he doesn’t then who cares? Lucy would probably not like that he was kissing another girl behind his gfs back after faking like she was his gf to meet his brother either.
Doesn’t “was kissing” imply a continuous behavior, kinda? He kissed Joyce one time only, and then never did it again.
But it was an extended kiss. There were several seconds during which he was kissing Joyce.
I think it does imply repetition, or else one would use the simple past “kissed”. So you’re correct, I think.
But it’s not continuous, like Klimt’s “The Kiss”. That guy has been kissing her since 1907-8 and will go on doing so for who-knows-how-long.
this feels like a dialect thing.
If he was there for the argument he presumably already knows some of it. But it’s an uncomfortable reminder of the reality of their situation.
“Take that, Sal, your disparaging remark was an overestimate on the sustainability of our relationship.”
I don’t think Lucy really care all that much about that. I bet she forgot she said that.
Forgot in that it wasn’t an active thought, sure, but here she clearly remembers.
Also, like, my comments was meant more joking.
One of her eyebrows clearly is digging up that memory and everything it’s linked to.
Never doubt a big sister’s estimate. XD
Sal may not always be right, but she’s never wrong.
Now that Jacob is part of this I am starting to get curious about IU’s layout. I know some of the walking group attend the same class (Robin’s political science and/or Prof. Whatever his name is’ chemistry) but do they all have classes in the same direction? Are some of them doubling back around?

They used to call Sal “Gróa” the way she predicts the future.
Love how genuinely confused Lucy looks. I bet she entirely forgot she said that.
That was literally like 3 days ago for them.
Yes, I know.
To me she looks like “I knew there was something I didn’t want to remember!”
yess judgment
It’s 14 days when you include sales tax
“Sal’s tax”, surely?
Sal’s tacks. That was a sharp, pointed comment.
jokes on you guys i cant count
“So was that an accurate prediction of me, your brother, your mother or all of the above?”
Yes
Sal, why is this the one thing you want to talk about in front of her new boyfriend
As a friend of mine (who is a paralegal) responds whenever someone asks her why she keeps arguing with what can only be best described as the internet’s bottom-feeders*:
“I love being right.”
*Think defenders of famous sex pest Vic Mignona
… Is your friend Tewson?
(Ah, the threadnaut. Such fond memories)
It is indeed her!
Man, my sister is still saying “They need to leave that poor guy alone” about Mignogna.
My reply to that would be something along the lines of, “Boyfriend? Damn I thought it was a one night stand. But hey all power to you.”
Damn only fourteen days of in-comic time hs passed. Guess it’s been a long summer for me.
But the last day of summer
Never felt so cold
No the last day of summer
Never felt so old
True blondness comes from within.
within a bottle of peroxide.
It just dawned on me that we’re getting 678878778788767677667 more days of winter in this comic.
A bit harsh and unnecessary, no?
Absolutely, but I do think there is something to not loving interlopers in your friend group. Lucy more or less decided with the mild help of Walky to join a friend group where nobody was really down to have her there? And while many of them are pretty open friendly people and Sarah is coming around, she’s still inserted herself into a friend group and some people are still not going to love that if after more exposure they don’t really get along.

She just demonstrated that she doesn’t care about the “three date” rule anymore, either, so that’s not even an accurate assessment of her character.
It’s been said a lot already, but the “three dates” thing was never actually a hard line.
ha HA, “hard”
Sal: Now we can go on a double date.
I mean, she let Lucy give Walky the business at the party, I’d say it’s pretty tame to point out that the relationship didn’t last very long, and wonderful symmetry with Lucy’s “two whole days” comment regarding Walky’s rekindled relationship with Dorothy.
Sal, being a sister of some quality, is fine here
I always use “fling” to refer to a situation with more canoodling between folks than Walky and Lucy ever had, maybe compressed into a short time. Of course Sal doesn’t know the limits of the canoodling they (didn’t) have.
11 days? Pretty close enough to right.
I feel like Lucy clarifying that isn’t really a win for her.
“Told’ja it would only last two weeks.”
“Actually it was even less than that.”
Feels like kind of a self burn.
Kind of show how little she actually cares about it now.

Two IRL years to cover two weeks real-time.
Lordy.
OH MY GOD this comic is never resolving anything.
The good news is, that gives me all the more time to make quality fan games.
Life gives you lemons, take them out the freezer.
You know quoting people for how long one thinks their relationship will last is usually frowned upon in the real world.
He’s still got his hand in her pants, doesn’t he?
https://opusthepoet.wordpress.com/2024/08/30/where-ive-been-the-last-2-months/
The story of what happened to me the last two months, with pictures.
whoa
I just want to say I love all you peeps for your comments I wish I could like them all! Also DoA is absolutely tremendous!
Dayum. I (almost) don’t even have anything to say, that was so cold. Chills. I mean, Walky isn’t even unhappy, nor was it that serious. It even put Jennifer into sexile, which is kinda funny. Sal, WTF?
Sal is the perfect amount of petty.
i wonder how long they would’ve lasted if walkys paernts hadn’t visitedl ol
