She could have asked Joyce to go up to her room and then reveal her outfit (or tell her), but it’s possible there are some physical differences that aren’t clear in the art (like she mentioned her skin improving, and there could be other small aspects that Joyce isn’t guaranteed to not ask about before her room). Also, there’s something to be said for having a quick escape route in case it goes poorly.
Makes sense to me. She’s in a college, where she knows at least some number of folks will be cool, where she can make a quick getaway if needed, where she doesn’t actually know anyone around or need to care about their opinions or, indeed, ever see or interact with them ever again.

a similar mechanism is present in many coin pusher machines where if you tilted the machine to tried force the coins to slide out if would activate a hidden trap door in the collection slot that would recollect them into the machine and sounding an alert noise
Tickets are fairly recent. Classical pinball machines had a pendulum in them to keep them from being bumped and rocked to influence the ball and cheat. When I grew up arcades didn’t have tickets at all.

I miss tokens. like the one cool arcade here in town had their machine set up so you got 5 tokens for a dollar. if you got any tokens that weren’t the regular gold color, you took them to the attendant and traded them in for 10 or 20 or 50 tokens. and the games were all different. none of them game out tickets. there was maybe one or two games with a gun, and fighting games weren’t a thing yet. There was a game that had a whole keypad on it I can’t remember the name of, but it would save your progress and you could pick up where you left off at your next visit. there was also that third game that was like Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace, but was a spy game?
And now we see Joyce freak out, then freak out at herself for freaking out. It’s easy to be accepting when it’s a hypothetical, or just someone you know, but you really discover how much bigotry you’ve internalised when your mental frame of someone you knew for a long time or grew up with is upended, no matter how much you think you have a lid on it.

the big picture of bigotry that needs to be understood is that it’s not so much about individuals insomuch as it’s about the systems we are born into by pure chance that are in need of changing. In the United States and parts of the world which took after our bad example, bigotry is heavily ingrained into our culture and a lot of the ways we are brought up to think about, say, and do things, in lots of ways we don’t even realize because the real history behind them is often hidden from us.
Addressing it requires thinking about ourselves and our place in it, social justice is all about questioning traditions and customs and stuff we were born into by pure chance and were mislead into venerating because of our upbringing.
It’s not just tough, but ongoing. You think you’ve rooted it out, dealt with it properly, you’re congratulating yourself for how enlightened you are now and some new buried bit you’d never seen pops out.

When I was in college, I’d had a beard since high school, and I shaved one halloween for a costume. I was meeting a friend for lunch, and she walked right past me just like Joyce did here. I grant you that was much funnier for me than I expect it is for Jocelyn, but the strip gave me a little hit of personal nostalgia.
Gotta say I wouldn’t have been able to yell after Joyce like that. I’m not the most judicious when it comes to my voice training, but even so, that early in transition, I wouldn’t have been able to yell across a room; best you’d get out of me would be a stage whisper and I’d go fast walking after the person so as to attract as little attention as possible.
I had to have it spelled to me that voice changing with transition only works one way. I’m a biologist, so I can understand what happens with T, but it never occurred to me that it doesn’t work the other way around (which of course it doesn’t).
I wonder if we’ll learn how to adjust one’s natural pitch with surgery eventually. Vocal chords are tricky and fiddly.

Tickets are fairly recent. Classical pinball machines had a pendulum in them to keep them from being bumped and rocked to influence the ball and cheat. When I grew up arcades didn’t have tickets at all.

I miss tokens. like the one cool arcade here in town had their machine set up so you got 5 tokens for a dollar. if you got any tokens that weren’t the regular gold color, you took them to the attendant and traded them in for 10 or 20 or 50 tokens. and the games were all different. none of them game out tickets. there was maybe one or two games with a gun, and fighting games weren’t a thing yet. There was a game that had a whole keypad on it I can’t remember the name of, but it would save your progress and you could pick up where you left off at your next visit. there was also that third game that was like Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace, but was a spy game?

Yeah, I know from experience confronting internalized bigotry can be REALLY tough, especially when it came to embracing my being autistic.
the big picture of bigotry that needs to be understood is that it’s not so much about individuals insomuch as it’s about the systems we are born into by pure chance that are in need of changing. In the United States and parts of the world which took after our bad example, bigotry is heavily ingrained into our culture and a lot of the ways we are brought up to think about, say, and do things, in lots of ways we don’t even realize because the real history behind them is often hidden from us.
Addressing it requires thinking about ourselves and our place in it, social justice is all about questioning traditions and customs and stuff we were born into by pure chance and were mislead into venerating because of our upbringing.
It’s not just tough, but ongoing. You think you’ve rooted it out, dealt with it properly, you’re congratulating yourself for how enlightened you are now and some new buried bit you’d never seen pops out.

When I was in college, I’d had a beard since high school, and I shaved one halloween for a costume. I was meeting a friend for lunch, and she walked right past me just like Joyce did here. I grant you that was much funnier for me than I expect it is for Jocelyn, but the strip gave me a little hit of personal nostalgia.
Gotta say I wouldn’t have been able to yell after Joyce like that. I’m not the most judicious when it comes to my voice training, but even so, that early in transition, I wouldn’t have been able to yell across a room; best you’d get out of me would be a stage whisper and I’d go fast walking after the person so as to attract as little attention as possible.
I had to have it spelled to me that voice changing with transition only works one way. I’m a biologist, so I can understand what happens with T, but it never occurred to me that it doesn’t work the other way around (which of course it doesn’t).
I wonder if we’ll learn how to adjust one’s natural pitch with surgery eventually. Vocal chords are tricky and fiddly.
They can do it now to some extent, but its very hit or miss.
Besides, wouldn’t she want to use the voice Joyce would recognize immediately? They’ve talked on the phone somewhat regularly.
