oooh hey this reminded me of the bowling. This probably means she won’t be arrested… BUt It does little to reassure me about Sal’s fate if she hid A-G’s stuff in her closet.
The motion thing in that franchise is particularly funny because that’s how human eyes work and is actually an adaptation for seeing through camouflage patterning on animals.
IQ has always been bullshit, at least what’s become of it
in the united states, the very concept only ever got as popular as it did outside of the relatively niche field of childrens educational psychology because it was used to disenfranchize people 👀
I also don’t think she’s going to be a major target (though this is still gonna majorly suck for her) , but that’s admittedly at least in part because I know she was woven into this storyline after it was already written.
Not to disagree with the legendary Thag Simmons, but we do know that Asma is still at her desk job in next storylines… So its safe to say our muslima escapes this, but dunno how unphased
I understand the US has succumbed to fascism and all that, but as far as we know Asma is a citizen, probably native born. Even now she couldn’t be ”deported”, surely.
Well, no. When you grab an American citizen off the streets, hold them without due process, and deny that their birth certificate is valid, that’s just called ‘kidnapping”. If you then ship them to a slave camp in a country they have no connection to, it’s not “deportation”, it’s “human trafficking”.
Or when you do prove it, and ICE throws out all the paperwork you provide, claiming everything from your birth certificate to your REAL ID is “forged”. Which is an ongoing incident.
I genuinely wasn’t factoring in her citizenship. She could have lived her entire life in the states with birthright citizenship and still be at risk from some racist asshole with a badge and a quota
Staying in a position of authority (behind the desk working for the college) is probably the safest place for Asma to stick around right now. Most emergency personnel ignored me when I worked at my front desk. I mostly dealt with allowing EMTs in and out when stidents drank too much. There was one day when an aunt was trying to find her niece and demanding I tell her what room or the girl’s phone number. I called the head RA and sneakily called the room of the girl who did not want her aunt there. The lady got escorted off property, but a cop came back to talk to the RA and I was there. The lady blew a 0.8 BAC. I was raised by alcoholics and had no idea the lady was drunk.
Yeah. I kinda alluded to this yesterday, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the campus cops look at Asma as more “hello, fellow staff member who knows what’s really happening here” and less as “brown woman bad”.
Depending on whether A) they try to get any info about whatever they’re looking for from her, and B) how she responds.
Oof, that’s asking a lot… these days most of my magical power goes towards generating an aura that makes everyone in my vicinity better at math and physics.
And then A-G will chase after to rescue Joyce from the paddywagon. Then the cops can try to nab her, having lured her. Good plan by the cops. (but they’re still cops so 0/5 stars no notes needed)
We didn’t think Mike would actually die either, yet here we are.
Granted the optics for having a character actually get deported would be way worse so I don’t think it would happen, but I’m not going to say ‘DEFINITELY NOT’ anymore.
While it would be kind of darkly funny after the setup, this isn’t an ICE raid.
More practically, after the reaction to the protest, Willis committed to giving Asma a higher presence in the strip, which actually having her deported wouldn’t allow. I
I’d say we have no evidence Asma wasn’t born here in the United States but, of course, that hasn’t stopped people from trying for all brown protestors.
Said elsewhere, but in this particular case the campus cops seem pretty likely to treat her as “fellow staff member interested in the dorms being orderly, have you seen persons X Y or Z leave the building through here?” rather than “brown woman? Bad!”
Wait, maybe Sal won’t get arrested in place of Amber, because if she did, she couldn’t show up for bowling and disappoint Asma? Hijinks wins out over fascism, just this once?
The protest was just some kids trespassing on school grounds. Now that it’s broken up finding who was at the protest is in the sweet spot of “unimportant” and “pain in the ass” where cops aren’t going to care.
No, the cops are here for Amazi-Girl, because Amazi-Girl attacked a bunch of cops. That’s why Amber is the one person being tipped off.
And they were almost definitely seen with Amazi-Girl, even if the cops aren’t after them specifically they’ll almost definitely want to question them about Amazi-Girl.
Yeah, cops often arrest and sometimes even prosecute protestors on the spot. It’s pretty rare to track people down afterwards without something more than “you were at the protest we broke up” to aim for.
I assumed that this was all arranged by Puddinghead because she knew Asma was at the protest and would be aware of the police coming today because they’d expect the university cooperation. However, I’ve been informed that, and this came as a huge shock. My conspiracy theory that Chloe was evil on a horrifying level is…NOT substantiated by the text.
I know, I was shocked.
In fact, she may not be evil at all despite being an authority figure.

In any case, this is a powerful story and wouldn’t work for a character other than Asma. I’m glad Willis has promoted her to main cast.
did she seem that malicious? she was encouraging asma to take some time to herself, someone who’d disapprove feels like they wouldn’t be able to hold back some passive aggressive jab that’d imply disapproval of her going
There is some unusual lighting effects in there. Would love to see what that’s all about. Cos I very much doubt that it is random. There is architecture causing it!
Surely Asma will be fine if she just stays at her desk, right? And hopefully Amber manages to get out of there, if these cops are looking for her. I’m wondering how realistic Willis decided to make these cops behave compared to actual cops for this story arc. I don’t know what they’re like in other countries, but I don’t trust the cops here in America at all.
If by ‘remain silent period’ you mean actually not speaking to them in any capacity at all, that’s a losing strategy in pretty much all situations. It makes you a target. Just be polite, give vague answers, and don’t admit to anything.
In other countries that don’t have a lot of corruption, cops are mostly harmless, but the job does attract authoritarians and extreme right-wingers who are itching to deport people. The job itself also teaches you that crime is everywhere and anyone could be a criminal.
In my homecountry, cops are harmless, mostly good natured people. They do end up retiring paranoid and looking for crime and criminals everywhere.
What every American says abotu cops, my countrymen say about military people. That’s where the authoritarians and extreme right wingers end up in.
Mostly because of the military dictatorship a few decades back, the people who wanted to help and protect ended up becoming cops, and the people who wanted to oppress and stomp down in the military.
This is going to be an indiscriminate raid, arresting everyone who is darker in skin color or shows signs of injury (if specifically looking for Amazi-girl). Once again I shall channel the vibe that fits the most. ACAB
Only one Black Maria outside means they are not planning to arrest more than a dozen students at the absolute most. Only four cruisers means they are probably looking just for Amazi-Girl
Concur — this is not enough cops for it to be some kind of indiscriminate racist roundup, and they’re not geared like “riot cop” or “fed”, but like “Local/IU cops”, meaning that they’re probably looking for bolt-cutters, Amazi-Girl, or both.
Just noticed, one of those officers has a bandage on his cheek, likely from fighting AG. I’m certain that his recent injuries will help him empathize with Amber due to HER recent injuries, and he will extend her every courtesy as a result.
If they were looking for Amber, they would have four guys serving an arrest warrant. This looks more like a containment and search for a violent cosplayer, female, 5’2″, brunette.
From a legal point of view: Do the police have the right to search (or even enter?) the dorm without a warrant? If not, who’s supposed to demand they present one? Asma, in this situation?
They could get permission from the school I assume even without a warrant, but someone on the scene would have to know about that, right?
Obviously, cops don’t always follow the rules, but what is the process supposed to be here?
Normally, what they’re supposed to do in this situation is walk toward the nearest lake, and then keep walking once they reach the water. It’s called the Anticlea Maneuver.
I mentioned yesterday, but back when I was in college my school had a similar setup that IU appears to (where the “campus police” are a real police force, but also “campus security”), so you’d get situations where a cop would be wearing his metaphorical “campus security, part of residence life and thus basically the landlord” hat, then he’d “smell smoke so it’s an emergency” and pop a door to find a kid with weed, and immediately switch to his “actual badged police” hat who now has seen a person “doing drugs in public”.
At which point it becomes a matter of how the local judges take it unless you have the money to appeal it up.
My assumption and this is a laymen is that the school has complete ownership of the dorm and there’s no assumption of privacy or expectation that they can’t be searched at will.
Certainly, though, there’s plenty of reason to get a warrant with the assaults on an officer and past history of assaults. If they know Amber is Amazi-Girl’s body, they also have past assault with a deadly weapon.
But that’s kind of a different question: Even if the school has ownership and can allow searches at will, that’s not the same as the police themselves doing so. They’d need authorization from the school, even if they didn’t need individual warrants, right?
Or is it that since they’re part of the university, they can do whatever anyway? Somehow I don’t think that would fly if they wanted to search a Dean’s office, even if it does for students.
I guess I view the warmongering university that was against the protests as being all for the cops on campus and thus have given their permission with gusto.
They definitely have good reason to get a warrant for Amazi-Girl. This isn’t even abuse of police power. It’s not even a huge show of force – possibly less than I’d expect if they’re coming to arrest the vigilante who was beating up multiple squads in riot gear a couple days ago.
IANAL but my understanding is that dorm rooms are considered private residences for fourth amendment purposes and they would need a warrant probable cause to conduct a search of any individual dorm room.
I’ve said this elsewhere as well, but much like a guest at a hotel, see, e.g., Stoner v. California, 376 U.S. 483, 490 (1964); United States v. Allen, 106 F.3d 695, 698 (6th Cir. 1997) (citing Hoffa v. United States, 385 U.S. 293, 301 (1966)), a student in a dorm room almost certainly still enjoys some degree of 4th Amendment protections in their dorm, based on their reasonable expectation of privacy therein. “The Fourth Amendment protects people, not places.” Katz v. United States, 389 U.S. 347, 351 (1967).
Look at those brave heroes
Boldly walking into a building
And pointing at stuff
Oh hey, they all have guns
They should put those in their mouths
Just for the flavor
Just for the nutrients
Students rent their rooms. The university is the landlord. Betting the leasing contract gives the university the right to invite cops in or inspect the premises without notice.
Asmah is rightly worried but probably not the original target. But she was seen in close contact with AG. While the kissing protesters were kinda generic teens, Asmah stands out in a crowd. That would make her a possible associate or co-conspirator of AG’s.
I really like the composition of the third panel, how it shows the whole hall as an indicator that Asma’s looking up from her desk and noticing the commotion that’s going on.
I’m gonna be pretty mad if Asma gets in trouble, though. Looks like everyone will be mad about that.
Regarding your comment, yeah I think the university is doing something hinky where they can ‘consent to a search’ of a bunch of student dorms without letting the students know.
Seems to me they would have to let some school official on the scene know though. In the apparent absence of anyone else, should Asma be asking for a search warrant?
The university would probably be able to grant the police entry into the residence hall, but any searches of actual dorm rooms would need a warrant or voluntary consent.
Sure, but they’ve actually got to grant access right? People shouldn’t just be assuming they’ve been given it because they rolled up and walked in.
Like, come in with a university official in tow or some kind of paperwork. Or obviously and preferably, a warrant. Which, assuming they’re after Amazi-Girl and have any evidence at all, would be a slam dunk. The only real question is how broad could it be.
Much like a guest at a hotel, see, e.g., Stoner v. California, 376 U.S. 483, 490 (1964); United States v. Allen, 106 F.3d 695, 698 (6th Cir. 1997)(Citing Hoffa v. United States, 389 U.S. 347, 351 (1967).
I’m going completely off of memory here because I think in one of my criminal justice courses we discussed something like this; anything that is part of the dorm room is fit to be searched, such as the bed, the desk, the closet, because those are things that belong to the university. However, if the student has a backpack or purse, that would technically be considered the student’s personal belonging that doesn’t belong to the university and might not be able to be searched without a warrant granting access to it.
I don’t think that would be true for hotel rooms, which was a topic of discussion in one of my criminal law classes, but I admit we did not talk specifically about dorm rooms, so idk. My instinct is that the general rule is that when you are paying to use a room like a place you live in, and not just like, staying in the guest room at your Aunt Sue’s, you have a reasonable expectation of privacy in that room’s storage spaces like closets, desk drawers, etc.
Like, if I’m renting an apartment, the landlord can’t give the police consent to search as some kind of proxy for my consent (I mean they can, but Fourth Amendment stuff would come into play for sure). Similarly, if I’m just renting a room in somebody’s house, I still don’t think the police can come search the closet of that room without a warrant, even if the landlord/owner gives them permission to search the rest of the house. I think hotel rooms and dorm rooms should work similarly in that regard.
On the other hand, if I learned one thing in law school it’s that the law is often counterintuitive so…*shrug.emoji*.
I wonder who they’re really after? Amazi-Girl/Amber would be the logical target, but Willis could also have the cops target someone utterly innocuous to make the situation absurd.
Tony has big cop energy, but I don’t think he could possibly be a narc, because I don’t think he actually knows anything he could narc about. He’s only just become peripherally involved with the group, and I don’t think he’s ever even met Amber.
“oooooo lookie ^-^ bisexual light–”
“THAT’S THE POLICE YOU IDIOT!!!”

“Those aren’t even the right fucking colors!! “
Really. What colors do you prefer for the purpose?
Probably the colors of the bisexual flag.

Worst leather kink college meetup group ever.
Anyone for bowling, officers?
oooh hey this reminded me of the bowling. This probably means she won’t be arrested… BUt It does little to reassure me about Sal’s fate if she hid A-G’s stuff in her closet.
I didn’t know bowling officers was an option.
All Cops Are Bowlers
Isn’t there someone who is/was convinced that Sal is AG?
That would be Jennifer, but she doesn’t live in this hall and probably wouldn’t tell the cops anyway.
Asma, stay very still. Maybe their vision is based on movement!
They certainly have the brain power of a long death scaley predator (no offense Dina)
Dina would definitely take umbrage at the notion that T. rex didn’t have extremely acute senses, including eyesight.
OH NO! Their vision is based on SIGHT! ~<3
+1
I mean even if that T. rex was outright blind it should have been able to smell them.
And in reality the T-rex had eyes the size of oranges, widely apart and facing forward. That apex predator had _amazing_ vision.
The motion thing in that franchise is particularly funny because that’s how human eyes work and is actually an adaptation for seeing through camouflage patterning on animals.
I take offense. I bet any dino would beat a cop in an IQ test
IQ has always been bullshit, at least what’s become of it
in the united states, the very concept only ever got as popular as it did outside of the relatively niche field of childrens educational psychology because it was used to disenfranchize people 👀
I tested one once and it just started eating the paper. I wonder how the dinosaur would fare.
I don’t think they’d be able to eat the entire dinosaur.
depends on the dinosaur. something like Compsagnathus i could see someone finish in a single sitting
“that only works in the movies”
— Dina, rolling eyes
Actually, dinosaur vision WAS based on movement.
…. of photons.
I think her hijab grants her immunity from consideration.
Oh god please don’t let them try to arrest Asma for either racism or being present at the protest
…dammit they’re probably gonna try to arrest Asma
😭😭😭 🫂🫂🫂
I don’t think she’s the target, but it feels like long odds she’s going to go unbothered during this.
(Apologies for accidental report.)
I also don’t think she’s going to be a major target (though this is still gonna majorly suck for her) , but that’s admittedly at least in part because I know she was woven into this storyline after it was already written.
The main thing is that it’s hard to make a bowling date if you’re being deported and I feel like that set-up is gonna pay-off
Not to disagree with the legendary Thag Simmons, but we do know that Asma is still at her desk job in next storylines… So its safe to say our muslima escapes this, but dunno how unphased
Fortunately, you do not disagree with me!
Deportation shouldn’t be a problem. Only foreign born students are Ruth and Jason.
Not to say some asshole won’t try it.
Citizenship is no defense with some of the goons if you have more of a tan than they tolerate.
1) I don’t think we have any evidence either way?
2) It’s not legal, but it has happened. That’s one of the problems with skipping due process.
Regarding 2: this exactly. If you never get a chance to prove you’re a citizen, it doesn’t help much.
Or when you do prove it, and ICE throws out all the paperwork you provide, claiming everything from your birth certificate to your REAL ID is “forged”. Which is an ongoing incident.
Denying the legitimacy of American citizens’ birth certificates because they’re not white is literally MAGA’s founding principle!
Driver’s license? Birth certificate? Looks fake, we’re taking you in anyways.
I really wish I were making this up.
Look at some news about Chicago, some time.
The lady blew a 0.8 BAC. I was raised by alcoholics and had no idea the lady was drunk.
This might have been a good time to take a vacation, Asma.
You were warned.
Almost makes you wonder how much Chloe knew
Almost, I don’t think Chloe is that perceptive or subtle, but almost
I think you mean .08, which is just a little intoxicated. I think 0.8 is enough to kill pretty much anyone.
Alternatively: some countries BAC measurement is per mille instead of percent. 0.8‰ = 0.08%.
There are multiple BAC records of over 1.3%, and these people often survive. One was even reported to be totally aware and responsive.
Yes, the LD50 for ethanol is supposed to be 0.4%.
The metabolism of chronic alcoholics functions a little differently, it would seem.
Or vandalism/destruction of a police barricade
well this is a problem
[swaps the second and fourth letters of your name real quick]
and suddenly I am reminded of the line from the Toonami Abridged Team4Star did “eww I said A cab” ~<3
Nice
took me way too long to realize you weren’t trying for some sort of “ack, a bus!” thing
To be fair, a wizard who just summoned speeding buses in the general direction of their target would be quite effective.
Oof, that’s asking a lot… these days most of my magical power goes towards generating an aura that makes everyone in my vicinity better at math and physics.
This is going to end with Dorothy and Joyce INSISTING they be arrested, isn’t it?
I predict that they will arrest Joyce when she gets insolent and toss her in a car before driving off while Dorothy watches in horror.
And then A-G will chase after to rescue Joyce from the paddywagon. Then the cops can try to nab her, having lured her. Good plan by the cops. (but they’re still cops so 0/5 stars no notes needed)
I’m a big fan of this idea but I’m not sure the preview panels entirely support it
maybe carla will call her aprents for a favor assuming they’d be willing to help out
Awfulness aside, Asma looks so cute in those first two panels!
please dont let them deport Asma
please
😖
I don’t think Willis would do that.
I absolutely think the cops would, but I don’t think Willis would.
We didn’t think Mike would actually die either, yet here we are.
Granted the optics for having a character actually get deported would be way worse so I don’t think it would happen, but I’m not going to say ‘DEFINITELY NOT’ anymore.

More practically, after the reaction to the protest, Willis committed to giving Asma a higher presence in the strip, which actually having her deported wouldn’t allow. I
It would be more in-line for a deus ex machina that solves everything. That’s really how it seems like this universe ultimately works.
that be greek to me, pal :p
I’d say we have no evidence Asma wasn’t born here in the United States but, of course, that hasn’t stopped people from trying for all brown protestors.
And succeeding! Dozens of citizens have been detained and some “deported”* already
* You cannot, of course, “deport” someone born in the United States, but you can unlawfully kidnap them and send them to a foreign country
Do we know that Asma’s from another country, or do we just think it doesn’t matter?
Possibly both.
Having a student visa would be another element of college life Willis could touch on.
The cops seem to be ignoring her, so unless they find fence cutters in her room, she should be fine.
i believe there was a conversation that the boltcutters were likely from the ra office or somewhere there abouts
That bald cop seems to be pointing right at her though.
… Is “bald” still PC on here? Or do we use “follically challenged”?
nah i think in bald as a descriptor is ok! (said as a man with waist length red hair)
Maybe Jason will get deported. Though with his job as Robin’s TA, maybe his status is legitimate again?
Said elsewhere, but in this particular case the campus cops seem pretty likely to treat her as “fellow staff member interested in the dorms being orderly, have you seen persons X Y or Z leave the building through here?” rather than “brown woman? Bad!”
(although I suppose I agree that a lot of that depends on whether anyone saw her specifically and identifiably with those bolt cutters.)
Don’t worry, they’re across the way arresting Nash for that.

She looks so ready to start her day. I had no idea she enjoyed Center Desk duty that much

That is Customer Service Face. See How To Be a Werewolf for details.
Stay safe this holiday period (and any other time), y’all.
It would be better to be dangerous.
Wow! I got a DAMN YOU WILLIS for Christmas!
Hmmm, they could be after anyone at the protest and seeing as Dorothy and Joyce are the face of the protest…..
They were trespassing on public property.
The cads!
Is it season finale time ALREADY?
Both a Christmas joke and an actual question.
I think we’re in mid-season status quo change time. Like how Becky’s arrival and the first toe-dad showdown was for the first season
Yeesh, aren’t we still in January? The semester hasn’t even lasted two months.
Dumbing of Age season finale??
I assumed that this was all arranged by Puddinghead because she knew Asma was at the protest and would be aware of the police coming today because they’d expect the university cooperation. In any case, this is a powerful story and wouldn’t work for a character other than Asma. I’m glad Willis has promoted her to main cast.
In a story about bad authority figures you do need to make space for well meaning but ultimately incompetent authority figures
So Chloe is puddinghead ?
Is this a thing ?
did she seem that malicious? she was encouraging asma to take some time to herself, someone who’d disapprove feels like they wouldn’t be able to hold back some passive aggressive jab that’d imply disapproval of her going
Asma: Oh no, it’s happened. They’re after me for “living while Muslim”
Cool long shot of the layout of the front desk and foyer. Pity it is full of raiding cops!
Amber into the ceiling? Is that a thing?
There is some unusual lighting effects in there. Would love to see what that’s all about. Cos I very much doubt that it is random. There is architecture causing it!
police lights outside coming through the windows
OH SHI-
At least the cops aren’t masked.
You can bet Asma knows to remain silent period, never ever talk to cops or assume they are interacting in good faith ever
If by ‘remain silent period’ you mean actually not speaking to them in any capacity at all, that’s a losing strategy in pretty much all situations. It makes you a target. Just be polite, give vague answers, and don’t admit to anything.

Are they cops or feds?
On further thought, I think these are probably local cops, since their uniforms match, they aren’t masked, and they aren’t carrying assault rifles.
cops in other countries are also bad
i mean, you’re not wrong?
it just tends to be offset by the fact that the US has consistently been at this whole other LEVEL of bad
They’re often bad in different ways and for different reasons
So yeah, basically Fuck ICE and the BrownShirt mindset that goes with it…

I felt that expression. Ouch.
Christ on a stick! when I first saw the guy in front of Asma’s counter I thought he had a gun out
I cant believe Willis would do this.
I cannot. believe. Willis would do this.
And after I specifically requested it no less! The bastard!!
(Poor Asma, please be safe…)
Obligatory ACAB
That’s basically what the Dean said to Roz way back when she filmed her sex tape with Joe
347, 351 (1967).
not that it’s stopped ppl before, idk how many ppl will pull out their phones and record tho
Look at those brave heroes
Boldly walking into a building
And pointing at stuff
Oh hey, they all have guns
They should put those in their mouths
Just for the flavor
Just for the nutrients
i was told that long foods that taste like smoke were manly foods. come on, boys, aren’t you men???
Men really love sucking cocks dipped in ashes.
(sorry, that wasn’t supposed to be a reply.)
One wonders what the warrent says.
This is certainly a Way to thin out the series cast.
Here me OUT: Arrest the ENTIRE cast, and put them in jail
Like seinfeld.
COMIC OVER.
Then he can start new ones, Hoosier Jail Blues, Trial of the Century. Finally: sweater vest is the New Black.
… oh, they’re not after Amazi-Girl, thry’re after Joyce and Dorothy.
Because they’re the face of the movement now.
oh my god my poor girl
I wonder who they’re really after? Amazi-Girl/Amber would be the logical target, but Willis could also have the cops target someone utterly innocuous to make the situation absurd.
I suspect they are after Jocelyn ! They might even think Joyce is Jocelyn.
There is no way they will know she is a former student
well other than joyce/dorothy being on the cover i assume other pics were taken if joyce’s dad was able to get a pic of jocelyn
Does anyone think Tony might have narced?
Not even a thought that crossed my mind no.
I’d have to remember Tony in the first place.
If he did, sorry to say Sarah, but boyfriend or not, snitches get stitches, period
Tony has big cop energy, but I don’t think he could possibly be a narc, because I don’t think he actually knows anything he could narc about. He’s only just become peripherally involved with the group, and I don’t think he’s ever even met Amber.
even as the dean’s son i don’t think he’d necessarily have too strong of a political opinion
Dina and Charlie need to start evading folks. Maybe stashing them in that bank vault until the raid is done
I am really worried about them both honestly,
cops aren’t exactly known to be nice to mentally disabled folk
TT~TT
well, idk how much charlie was part of things but maybe if they all link arms with them they’ll blend in
My overzealous auto correct mucked up. It was supposed to be evacuating not evading
Ack it was supposed to be evacuating not evading
Hey, is that a shark beneath a flying motorcycle? Let’s find out.
