a lot of more devout Christians show their children mainly or only Christian childrens’ shows. Production values and writing vary… widely.

This may be the first time Joyce has seen something that is actually good.

I think the hate is directed more towards the name than the fandom itself. Probably because the word Bro has been co-opted by the Douchebag Hordes. Personally I’m allright with the name, because I think it’s the first step to taking it back. Someday it will be ours again.

Yeah you could replace ‘bronies’ in that sentence with just about any group name and it remains relevant, for example:

‘ a dismaying number of people who call themselves christians/envirnmentalists/athiests behave with a truly shocking degree of insensitivity and entitlement.’

The sad part that the statement is still true.

Nah, it’s towards the more … extreme fans. Those who feel it necessary to let everyone in the world know that they’re a fan of a particular cartoon, have it permeate every aspect of their life, then try to have it permeate every aspect of the life of everyone around them. Like really overbearing, very specific furries.

                That’s where the hate’s directed.

Well, in my case anyway. And I probably wouldn’t say hate… just… hmm… what would be a more accurate word… intense distaste? I’m not about to go beat on a brony. But I do actively avoid a lot of things to do with the whole thing. It’s actually put me off the show by way of proxy embarrassment.

You watch the show, you like the show, you’re even a fan of it? Sure, go right ahead… just… please… be aware that no-one else actually cares.

It’s like me 10 years ago when I was just getting into anime and Studio Ghibli films in general. It was like OMG BEST THING EVER GUYS YOU MUST WATCH THIS WITH ME. Soon learned that lesson. These things are limited market, and after about the third attempt people start to avoid you and think of you as That Creepy Guy With The Foreign Cartoon DVDs. These days those who didn’t run a mile have at least dropped the “Creepy” bit, and if there’s something major happening I might mention it in passing and I’ll answer an odd question someone may have, but I still haven’t got them to watch any discs or join me at any showings. Because no-one cares about your strange hobby, especially when you’re shouting about it in a public forum.

BTW, I give Dave and other cartoonists a free pass for going on about Transformers, MLP or whatever even so – because this is their private space, and we’re guests within it. They can say what they like.

(And I know I’m probably angling for a ban with this post, but I figured it might be useful to offer an actual “outsider’s perspective” in contrast to guesswork by someone within that group in question. There were a few astonishingly hardline and overeager otaku in the university anime & manga club who I wish I could have given that hint to. I had to leave it in the end because it was just too cringeworthy when both they and members of the public were around. At some point you cross the line from “hey, I found this thing, it’s surprisingly great, wanna come give it a look” to seeming like a bizarre cult.)

BTW, the name is pretty dumb, but there’s no shortage of special interest groups that give themselves inadvisable monikers, and amongst them it doesn’t really stand out. I’m sure there’s a hundred worse choices it could have been.

Because the very word “brony” is a gender-divisive piece of nonsense that is waaaay too excited and defensively proud of itself for liking a show aimed at girls.

That bronies think it’s so amazing that they can actually like a show featuring ladies that was aimed at ladies is insulting. The number of them who then go on to insist that, because it’s good, it CAN’T be aimed at little girls and MUST in fact be secretly for adult male fans like them… are truly gross.

It has nothing to do with brony sounding stupid or for it being a rhyming version of “pony”; if it were, then truly fantern and all the other terms out there that are similar would be equally stupid. The gender and the attitude implied by the gender are what’s stupid.

You’re missing the point. Apparently so are the ones who sed “because it’s good, it CAN’T be aimed at little girls”. MLP:FiM was quite firmly aimed at little girls when it started (also their family to a lesser extent) – that does not in any way detract from it being awesome. THAT is the point.

It’s sadly a rare gem considering most other, especially earlier children’s programs didn’t have such depth. The show has evolved and you’d be misinformed if you didn’t think it’s target audience has not shifted a bit due to bronies being a thing, even if the writing didn’t substantially change (note: point of debate).
Again, what’s so wonderful here is a show made for children that can ALSO appeal to adult men and women. It’s a pretty revolutionary concept since the number of small girl’s shows that aren’t shallow is shockingly low. Most anime has a similar texture, but is usually targeted at somewhat older demographics. It also marks a turning point – one where it isn’t quite as acceptable to talk down to children in their programming as it used to be.

Need I mention the strong self-worth messages, emphasis on kind social bonding/empathy or what it means to face adversity and diversity outside your comfort zone.
Let me put it this way – had Joyce seen MLP:FiM she wouldn’t be having even half of her freakouts or faux pas since these are themes that get somewhat explored in the show. Also, awesome references by the bucket-load… most of which a child won’t register, but her older brother or parents will very likely notice – therefor facilitating bonding experiences between sed family members.
Due to this it also happened to appeal to 20-something males and females (note: statistically we get more males, but there’s enough pegasisters around to where it’s not a sausagefest, not by a long shot).

“The gender and the attitude implied by the gender are what’s stupid.”
Allow me to clarify: the term ‘brony’ and female-only variant ‘pegasister’ have been interchangeable since inception. I even remember the thread that created the female-counterpart shortly after we decided on a standardized name for our fanbase.
That sed, ‘brony’ turned out to be gender-neutral enough that most girls in the community used it to self-identify, hence why the distinction isn’t made all too often – since the women themselves pretty much voted to be called brony as well.
If you’d rather use pegasister/pegasis, there’s nopony that won’t switch to it if asked nicely. I’d say that’s quite inclusive as far as fanbase names go. We really do try to make everyone feel welcome.

Love & Peace (because Vash was a brony before his time)

At least for the animated series, Giancarlo Volpe put it to a vote, and he approved of the name, so there you go. No arguments over whether it’s a gender-specific fandom term and if we need a separate one or not, either. (Technically the full name is the Fantern Corps.)

Funny how you’re treating us exactly as such.

As for actually being one – we ARE, or at least WHERE one. There was a time where just posting pony related anything would get you banned on 4chan, which is from where we largely originate.

Think about it – at first simply saying ‘brony’ would get you a permaban on any 4chan board. No appeal, no jack shit. Kindly tell me that’s not how a persecuted minority feels like. Ofc, it’s not IRL, but for some that place feels like home and is also their social corner. Being ostracized is NEVER easy, no matter where.

Anons being anons, the response was SWIFT AND RELENTLESS, we responded by loving and tolerating the shit out of 4chan and eventually – months, countless B& anons and innumerable deleted threads later – the bulk migrated to newly-created pony image boards while the bans stopped and we where essentially given minority rights via a special pony-section.
It was a hard-won, uneasy peace. Reminiscent of how the US handled black rights via segregation, but for a while it worked – it was better then just being banned on-sight. With time the situation de-escalated itself as more and more people flocked to the newly-formed Herd. The Internet learned, little by little that we existed and in sufficient numbers that we didn’t feel quite like a minority anymore. It was a time of great celebration and pride in our resilient little community. We helped each other as best we could, and we prospered in turn.

The experience left a very unique impact on me and makes me proud to be a brony, as my brothers and sisters faced great adversity together and we overcame it. Love and friendship won out over fear and hate.

Sadly, as with most movements, we gathered some not-so-nice people along the way. Think of them as our variant of feminazis that feminists so often and sadly need to constantly counter in order not to let them throw dirt on their good name.
I can also state that if I see one of these, I feel the patriotic DUTY to try and fix some of the damage they have caused – as it reflects badly on my beloved Herd, and myself in turn. Not to mention talk some sense into them and nicely ask them to remember who they represent and what our values are. Be NICE – first and foremost. That goes double if you actually use a pony-themed avatar – you have a RESPONSIBILITY should you choose to do that.

I should mention that the years have passed and millions of members later… well, we’re more of large chunk of the Internet then a minority therein. Still, some treat us with hostility just for liking something they hate (usually by proxy), and that’s never fun, especially when you started out having to constantly defend yourself and the people you respect from such ad hominem attacks.

                  Damn, this got long fast.
TL;DR: Bronies are the Internet-version of a minority that’s grown into mainstream culture, with all the hatered those usually face online. Also all the bad apples that go along with such trends – we do apologize for those, but want to let you know we’re not like that.

                  Friendship is Magic,

Some Doctor Who is perfect. Very little NuWho is near that level, but get into some of the classic stories like “City of Death”, “Genesis of the Daleks”, “The Daemons”, “Tomb of the Cybermen”, etc. and you’ve got sheer brilliance.

It’s got some serious problems. Sally basically gets stalked by the guy, and as a protagonist, she doesn’t really do much, things more happen to her.

Very enjoyable, but the writing has serious flaws. I lean more toward “The Empty Child” two-parter or “Waters of Mars” as high watermarks for NuWho.

My brother’s first was The Library, but I can’t remember my own first (I think it might’ve been The Beast Below.) My favorite though, or at least the one I go back to watch, is A Christmas Carol. It’s self-contained, the music’s great, I love the twist on the final ghost, and I think it presents what The Doctor can mean to both children and adults.

That was my AH-HA moment as to why so many people love the show. I thought that episode was a brilliant story. I Still don’t watch the show but I thought that episode was a great intro into the series.

I’m pretty sure my first episode of Doctor Who was “The Sea Devils”, but it wasn’t new at the time. No, no, I got into Who during the Peter Davison years. However, with a generous PBS station, I was exposed to three Doctors at once: Davison weeknights at 11, a full Pertwee serial on Saturday afternoons, and two episodes of Tom Baker Sundays at 7ish.

It’s not heresy, there are people for whom he’s not the favorite. And what your going through is *entirely* part of the experience. Getting really invested in the first Doctor you watch, then not being entirely sure about the new one. Eventually you realize you like the new one for different reasons, and your enjoyment of the previous one is no less significant. Each new Doctor becomes new and exciting, who knows, Ecceleston may end up not even being your favorite.

Heh, it’s just so many people seem to deem Tennant as THE BEST DOCTOR EVAR!!! and I was having a bit of fun with that mindset. I’m a few more episodes in now and I’m starting to see why that is, though. He’s hilarious. Still loved Eccleston’s acting when he got FURIOUS with the “last” Dalek, though. That man is pretty skilled himself, just a different type of humor. Tennant is more wacky; Eccleston is more sarcastic.

I tried to like B&B, I really did. But nothing is EVAR going to measure up to BTAS. As far as I’m concerned, Kevin Conroy IS the mother-effin’ Batman. And Mark “Luke Skywalker, whiny bongo” IS the Joker. One minute he’s silly and funny, then he’s freakin’ killing somebody. Then, there’s Harley. Robin(Dick Grayson): “What was she, before she went nuts?”
      Batman: A clinical psychologist.
      Robin: Figures.
I mean, seriously, what’s ever going to top that?

I like BTAS for exploring those deep depths, and I enjoy the dark character development given to Bats and his characters, and I like it because it didn’t always feel like it was treating kids like kids, and had an atmosphere of maturity to it.

But at the same time, I love B&TB because it’s just FUN! It takes the Silver Age, takes everything that people complain about the era over(Even the Superdickery is in there, apparently…I need to get to that episode soon), and says, “Yes, it’s dumb, it’s cheesy, it makes no sense, but we love it, we embrace it, and who cares if we have a babyfaced mobster making out with a man-faced-woman, didn’t you still get some entertainment out of that episode?”.

I also like that they embrace the hell out of SuperFriends Aquaman. Sure everyone calls him a lame-o and guys like Geoff Johns have done their damndest to stray from that, but he honestly does show his badassness in this show, and he PUNCHES A FRICKIN’ COMET. I’ve been convinced for a while Aquaman could be second in strength to Supes in strength, and that about solidifies it.

        …God, I’m gushing…

Well “Extra-TerrestriGirl” is at least still good. Yes it genderbended Dexter for the third time, but it actually gave hima boyfriend! Now there is comedy gold!

Alien Nation on the other hand was just meh. Yes Dexter trying to take over the world “WITH DEMOCRACY” was hilarious as was his speech in front of teh UN, but seriously? I jsut never got why people shower it with praise.

You see, “Extra-TerrestriGirl” was just the writers trying to work around the TV censors. Yeah, I get that animated shows up to that point never showed a same-sex couple together, but this hardly qualifies.

And if you can’t see the thinly veiled commentary on the late 20th century Republican party in “Alien Nation”, then I just can’t help you. I’m surprised that whole thing got by Joyce without a comment.

The more episodes you guys add, the longer it’ll take for me to complete the summaries…

You need 65 for syndication. And since we know there were a minumum of four or five seasons, that’d put it at thirteen-fifteen episodes a season on average… Thirteen happens often enough, I guess, but it seems kind of short for a western series, especially depending on when it originally came out. (Do we have an exact date canonically?)

              • Totz the Plaid
                Totz the Plaid
                July 4, 2013 at 1:04 am | #

We don’t have a canon date, but one episode aired “a week before the Porygon episode” of Pokemon from yesterday’s comments, which means that one aired in April, 1998 here in America.

We also have the 3rd Season episode Walky mentions in today’s comic including a “thinly veiled commentary on the late 20th century Republican party” according to NerdHerder.

So… It started in 1998 at the latest, probably more Fall, 1997. It also had at least 5 seasons according to Aizat’s commentary in this very thread. If each season lasted from Fall-Spring, that would take us into Spring 2002 which covers the idea of one episode airing the same night as the Invader Zim episode “Dark Harvest” as I established in the commentary for the comic “What Part”. That would put that episode in Season 4, but I think some of the comments before established there being Six or more seasons.

                …plus a crappy made-for-TV movie and a truly horrid M.Night Shyamalan live-action movie.

I haven’t made a chart yet, but I’m going to say it started in ’97 and ran through, say… ’04? That makes seven seasons. Maybe I’ll extend that to 8 if I feel it’s necessary, but 7 seasons x 26 episodes per season = 182 episodes. That’s a hell of a run for a cartoon.

I’m not going to name every episode for all 7 seasons, but that gives me room to spread the episodes out and give them room to breathe.

And I just came up with that date because it was the only reason I could think of for an episode getting entirely pulled. I don’t know if there was ever an established time period it aired in in the comic itself, but that would take priority.

Is nobody else trying to figure out which story arc from “the older comic books” this episode is based off of? My immediate guess would be the end of the Year Zero arc, but there are a few other places (the HA holding and zapping all the SEMME kids one by one would be my second) that could make sense.

For one, this IS Howard Stern. He’s doing it for the ratings so don’t expect journalistic integrity. Again, Howard Stern. Expect -his- opinion.

That sed, he missfires within the first 37 seconds. There’s a strong divide between the cloppers and the non-cloppers, but we still get along even if core principle issues can arise. Also, there’s a consensus to not post clop in areas where the children fans hang out – though this is the Internet so problems can arise, but the community practices self-policing and we try to clean up where there’s a mess.

1:36 “Comicon is sort of for loosers” – Gee Howard, I thought for a moment you where past 5th grade insults. My bad.
There’s little point for me to go past this, it’s self-evident how he’s approaching this and I don’t need to pick apart something done so amateurish.

      A case study:
Top comment by ‘VideoTape’ currently has 172 replies in which after he attacked bronies with various pejoratives.
The first brony to show up (‘Rainbow Doge’) shows enough maturity to not start the standard flamewar, and instead asks him why he hates us. No swearing, no violent mannerisms, he’s just insistent with his question. After a while non-bronies start being hostile towards VideoTape, and RainbowDoge starts to DEFEND him from the others. Mind you, VideoTape has just sed “bronies are like/act like some faggots” – yet RainbowDoge defends him none the less and tries to find common ground.
Thread goes on and 3 more bronies show up – one of them sadly yells in ALL CAPS constantly, but the other two are polite and never insult anyone, even when directly insulted several times. The one with ALL CAPS is told several times by the others to behave (again, no pejoratives).
Eventually VideoTape realizes that it is wrong to judge an entire fandom based on a few bad examples – this comes after Rainbow Doge, decent human being that he is, deflects yet more insults from SEVERAL sources including a rabid troll that fills several lines with “you have autism” (funny, I actually think I have a mild form – but for some this is some sort of crude insult, as gay used pejoratively) towards the bronies. Thread attracts a few death threats against bronies as well – standard fare if you’ve seen as many of these as I have. Yet all the bronies (minus the ALL CAPS one) reply calmly with reasoned arguments and occasionally a few slip-ups in language out of frustration (but only after being civil for a long period, unreasonably so really).
Even independent 3rd parties stop by and I quote: “So, anti-bronies say bronies are: autistic, gay, “fap to horses/ponies” and some contradictory things like “they’re 12 years olds” and “fat grownup men” with no effing evidence. Just baseless claims. Now, bronies can counter these arguments with evidence: themselves. My inner lawyer tells me that the bronies win the argument.”.
      I rest my case.

This isn’t even -unusual-. I’ve come to expect MATURITY and determined KINDNESS from my fellow bronies. The ones that aren’t nice will be kindly asked by their peers to respect our values. We try hard to protect everyone, even if they are openly hostile against us. It’s what MLP:FiM thought us – to try to be better people for our and everyone else’s sake.

Here's an entertaining cite at the bottom of the first page
The problems with this prosecution are legion, but most immediately, the
government cannot prosecute Judge Dugan because she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts. Immunity is not a defense to the prosecution to be determined later by a jury or court; it is an absolute bar to the prosecution at the outset. See Trump v. United States,
603 U.S. 593, 630 (2024).
