I did that every year in college from sophomore on. You needed at least one year of living in the dorms to get hired.
Pretty idyllic job, actually. Pay sucked, but I’d just sit there all night buzzing the drunks in and doing my homework. Maybe get a pizza and watch movies on my laptop. As long as I had no classes until afternoon, 11-7 shifts were great.
For some reason, I’ve always had the impression that Asma was a professional (or graduate) working for the hall, not an undergraduate. Not sure why that is.
My own university had paid, adult (as in, post-21 age range) staff running security and reception in the residential halls and main buildings. The most that the sophomore and third-year students did was “guardian angel” type work (sort of like RAs but less authoritarian, more big-sibling, including running nights out at the local bars* etc and making sure everyone got home ok). I had that gig for a couple months, til it turned out all my freshers were perfectly capable of handling themselves solo.
* UK based, thus, they were legally good to go get hammered from day one.
We called ’em “head residents” in my university days. They were adults, had an apartment in the dorms so were there most all the time, and were directly employed by the University.

I know I’m going to be absolutely alone in what I’m about to say but I think Faz and Dina would make an interesting couple. However that may only be because I’m fond of the cliche romantic circumstance where a boy manages to get a disinterested girl to like him in the end.

I’ve always thought that “need” referred to someone with an extreme knowledge of and fascination with various real life subjects (dinosaurs, computer technology, advanced mathematics etc.), while “geek” referred to that same knowledge and fascination applied to fictional narratives (Star Trek, Star Wars, Middle Earth etc.)
I’ve heard it differentiated like: nerds have no social skills, but geeks have enough social skills to get along swimmingly with other geeks (and/or argue endlessly with other geeks).

He made the first move on Ruth. And people are generally more okay with a woman hitting a man. I’m not saying that’s good, I just think they’ll be fine.
You know, even if Ruth hadn’t made it so obvious who she meant, Blaine would’ve given himself away by revealing that he knows the sex of the R.A. in question, thus showing that he (most likely) knows exactly who Asma was referring to.

You’re joking, but from my own time as an RA, I really can’t remember a single family weekend that didn’t involve some form of medical emergency. Usually several.
Asma said “Clark Wing”, so it just means that Blaine is familiar enough with the dorm to know which is the ladies’ wing, which is not a stretch for someone with a child in the dorm.
Except that gives away that he’s the parent of someone in that wing, and since it’s an R.A. from that wing that requested a parent be removed… It still makes Blaine at least a very good candidate for being the parent in question.
Nah, his kid doesn’t have to be in that wing for him to know that it’s ladies in that wing. Dr. Rosenthal’s kid is in Beck Wing, for example, but I’d bet ya anything he still knows where to find the girls…
And even if it did, it’d apply to roughly a quarter of the adults milling around here, which doesn’t make a great filter.
The defensive and not-really-a-denial, “How do you know it’s me?” instead of something more like, “Huh? What? Why?” is a better indicator.

“How do you know she was talking about me?” So even when trying to wriggle out of a situation, Blaine’s ego can’t keep from injecting ‘me’ into the conversation. In fact, part of me wonders if he’s secretly pleased with being the ‘big bad’ who has to be shown off campus.

I’ve always thought that “need” referred to someone with an extreme knowledge of and fascination with various real life subjects (dinosaurs, computer technology, advanced mathematics etc.), while “geek” referred to that same knowledge and fascination applied to fictional narratives (Star Trek, Star Wars, Middle Earth etc.)
That’s just my definition, though.
I’ve heard it differentiated like: nerds have no social skills, but geeks have enough social skills to get along swimmingly with other geeks (and/or argue endlessly with other geeks).
I’ve heard that they’re all ridiculous arbitrary labels whose meanings vary by geographic region, or even by social group within a specific region!

There is a ton of violence that day. Family weekends are hellish, torturous things that nobody wants to participate in.

Well, it is common on family visit weekend; however the blood is usually from walking in on their kids having sexy times, not violence.
Asma said “Clark Wing”, so it just means that Blaine is familiar enough with the dorm to know which is the ladies’ wing, which is not a stretch for someone with a child in the dorm.
Except that gives away that he’s the parent of someone in that wing, and since it’s an R.A. from that wing that requested a parent be removed… It still makes Blaine at least a very good candidate for being the parent in question.
Nah, his kid doesn’t have to be in that wing for him to know that it’s ladies in that wing. Dr. Rosenthal’s kid is in Beck Wing, for example, but I’d bet ya anything he still knows where to find the girls…
And even if it did, it’d apply to roughly a quarter of the adults milling around here, which doesn’t make a great filter.
The defensive and not-really-a-denial, “How do you know it’s me?” instead of something more like, “Huh? What? Why?” is a better indicator.

I’m desk worker and I can say that in this sort of situation, we would call security anyhow. I don’t think we’d ever be expected to deal with a potentially violent situation on our own – furthermore, leave the desk unattended. At very least, the RD would do it.
I’ve always had the impression that (despite us only really seeing her behind the desk) Asma is in more of an RD role.

The Dina + Faz pairing is growing on me. Part of me feels sorry for Faz, another part feels sorry for Dina for being the object of Faz’s current attentions. And yet… they’re two people who don’t know really how to interact with people that well.
Now I have this image of Amber returning to her dorm room and closing the door … only to find Dina and Faz biting each others’ arms and neck; Dina’s trying to kill him raptor-style, and Faz thinks she wants sex with him so he’s reciprocating. Which one Amber thinks is entirely dependent on the humor of the situation.
