Maybe he’s known all along that she is Amazi-girl, but prior to this moment, has only been able to muster the courage to express his real feelings for her in the context of what was essentially fantasy role playing.
That’s an interesting possibility. The only reason we had prior was that Amber looked so similar to Dorothy, which Danny didn’t notice until Joe pointed it out. He obviously has a type and maybe Amazi-Girl felt so different from Amber (and thus Dorothy) that he was able to let himself get closer to the masked girl in the cape.
I misread it first as “I’m so sorry” which I saw as apologizing to her for being an idiot lately… “so, I’m sorry” on the other hand… yeah, ominous wording.

Last time I saw that face, it was in a certain other continuum, with a certain other dude being mind-blowingly wonderful to her, to everyone’s surprise. But back to Danny: I now understand him a lot better. And I predict that the oncoming terrible will be coming from his parents. Scared for tomorrow’s panel!!
Actually, we’re talking about the fandom’s *perception* of his coolness, which (by my own, possibly biased estimation) was only about 66.667% of his actual coolness. Shark’s math seems pretty spot-on.
I think that is precisely it. And Amber’s problems mean she can’t just admit it. Their relationship is going to be painful to watch, but I think it’ll turn out alright in the end.

It’s so rewarding to see that expression on Amber in the last panel, considering the day she’s had. That’s the look of someone who’s not only deeply in love but also has reassurance that her man is deserving of that love.
Calling it right now. He just fell in love with Amber and is going to try to break up with Amazi-girl tonight. It’s going to be the most adorable awkward romance ever and we’re going to love it.
I think you’re half right. He has realized his feelings for Amber as of right now… but instead of breaking up with Amazi-Girl he’s going to hide the fact that he pretended Amber was his girlfriend, out of guilt. And of course she’ll know he’s hiding it, which will make her doubt Danny being such a nice guy.

And why do I have this feeling of forthcoming doom?
Because of the Willis Roller Coaster, the fastest damn coaster in the known universe, known for it’s breakneck turns, plunging drops to despair, and amazing climbs to the heights of happy?
Y’know, it seems to me like every individual sentence of Danny’s monologue is terrible. But together, they act like–I don’t know–some kind of octuple negative, and it turns out nice and heartwarming.
Go Danny boy.
That’s how I feel too? Because, like, the first bit is basically like “yeah, I like her because she’s a lot like Dorothy” which???? BUT ALSO I think the not wanting to take a big step that would mean change was what kept him with Dorothy so long, and so learning that he thinks of Amber as a Big Step actually gives me more faith that this could actually work.
This, this is why Danny’s my favorite character. Because I find him so relatable, I’m the one In my group that is a bit of a fool and ‘Dans’ thing up. But when I get a chance to be awesome and romantic or such it is a great feeling. Thank you Willis for allowing me to know that as Danny as I am, I can be a Danny with pride!
If it does turn out Danny knew all along, to use an old timey term, you’ll have to eat crow. Hell, you’ll have to eat several crows. Crows will become extinct because you’ll have to eat all of them as penance.
Jeezalou! Dannyboy must be as dense as Cobalt if he can’t see WonderGirl sitting right next to him; I mean spandex and a mask throw him off that much? Then again, Clark Kent/Superman was painfully obvious and fooled everybody so why not WonderGirl?

I might not be a Superman fan but there are many, many reasons why no one ever put together that Superman is Clark Kent. One, people usually see Supes as this larger than life kind of person compared to the mild-mannered Clark Kent.
Keep going with this, Danny. This should be the point where you look into her eyes and just completely melt, because it’s the moment when you finally come to terms with the fact that the real Amber is who you’ve been in love with all along.

Agreed. I think there may be some confusing going on here, between Roomies! Danny, who was a sanctimonious jerk (as Willis, in the ongoing commentary, is happy to remind us), and DoA Danny, who’s awfully clueless but not a jerk. At all.

It sure changes your perspective on characters when you peruse the Walkyverse archives. It certainly makes one think about, was this character always this way and just didn’t or didn’t know how to show it?
I had this experience regarding Mike. The hatefuckfest with Amber that grows into a real, meaningful, loving relationship casts a lot of his actions in IW! in a very different light. Mike has quite possibly the most productive and mature hate I’ve ever seen.
Sorry, I can’t let that pass. Refused to tell him? He asked her not to, because he preferred the fantasy to the reality. He wanted a story romance, not a true love. If, as this strip seems to show, he has realised that the real Amber is much better than his Lois Lane fantasy bullshit, then there’s hope for him yet.

Won’t it be interesting when he realizes that his two dream girls are one and the same.
If Amber wants to tell Danny she’s amazi-girl, it’s as simple as untying a damn knot. If she’s suffering from the arrangement that’s literally ALL she has to do.
But before today, that would almost certainly have lead to a breakup, so she would suffer even more. Now (assuming we are interpreting his speech correctly), she can choose whether to break up with him as AG and date him as herself, tell him the truth and date him properly, or even try to two-time him as both personas in whacky sit-com fashion (Willis forbid).
I honestly wasn’t as fond of her in SP! as I am in DoA. Sadly, it was difficult to appreciate her appearances here, as the presence of Danny tainted the majority of them.
She’s different in SP!, but I’m impressed at how much she grew and evolved as a character. Her DoA incarnation is a based more on that matured concept of who Amber is rather than who she started out as lo these many moons ago.
I recently got home from the wedding of one of my best friends, who had not been in the greatest of relationships previously. Her new husband is completely different from her previous experiences and the look she gave him during the vows is exactly the same as Amber’s. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but right now Danny’s dawning realization of what Amber is to him makes him an Amazi-guy.
Danny has emotionally grown five or ten years in four little panels. So many males are never that honest with themselves or with their mates; those that are, can take years to get to that stage.
In this way it’s a little bit of wish fulfillment. I prefer to take it as art (and I’m sure experience) showing an example for readers to mull over and, inshallah, take to heart.
As someone who has always liked Danny… Suck it, you guys! I was right! Just cuz the boy is bad at the “relationship thing” doesn’t mean he isn’t a good guy trying to do the right thing.
Unfortunately it was his appendix that grew three sizes that day, becoming inflamed during a pause in the conversation so awkward that he slowly went into septic shock but was unable to tell anyone.
In the hospital, 8 hours later, no doctor could save him.

This is cute and all, but I’m wondering where this will go from here. A girl feigning a relationship with a guy to get away from her parents which he plays along with while actually dating her alter ego is almost P.G. Wodehouse levels of crazy.
I don’t really see it happening now, but wouldn’t it be interesting/fucked up if Danny were soon to become a super villain, if only through a tragic series of events that Amber blames herself for.
Okay, I hate to say it, but here’s my prediction:
One or two story beats from now, this foursome will run into Dorothy and her parents. Amber will immediately freak out and decide that Danny only wants to be with her because she looks like Dorothy. Danny will be helpless to point out that this is actually the reason he resisted her for so long since that would mean he would have to admit that he’s “dating” Amazi-girl. (Indeed, the main reason he went after Amazi-girl in the first place was to resist what he felt towards Amber.) Tragic misunderstanding/romantic wackiness ensues.
But she already knows about Dorothy, I swear there was a conversation where he was talking to her and saying ‘I’d like to date you but you look so like my old girlfriend I’d be afraid it was a rebound.’
I’m trying to figure out what Danny thinks he’s saying, whether he thinks he’s making this up out of whole cloth, imagining he were dating Amber, or talking about Amazi-girl. In any of these cases, the fact that Danny thinks he’s lying – or basically, is lying – kind of knocks the wind out of the feel sails.
So you think he’s saying “I’m sorry” to Amber because you believe he’s making up this whole speech on the fly? My take is that I think he’s saying “I’m sorry” because in one brief minute he’s become aware that he’s been a real douche to Amber – and is really, truly sorry for keeping her at arm’s length. And once he does know this, he can never ever un-know it.
I think (and hope) you are right. But it is also possible that he is talking about his feelings for Amazi-Girl, and he is apologising to Amber because he doesn’t really feel that way about her, and knows that she wishes he did.
The thing is, that almost seems worse, since not knowing that this is his girlfriend, to be sincere in this puts him within sniffing distance of an emotional affair. Imagine if they weren’t the same? If this were Pete instead of Clark…?
Mmm, that’s tricky. On the one hand, you could say he’s a whiff away from being a cheater. On the other hand, I have to wonder . . . what would happen if I started courting my husband as a masked superhero and, for some crazy reason, he couldn’t tell it was me? It would be kind of weird if he *didn’t* have feelings for my alter ego. I mean . . . if I’m exactly the same person.. and we have amazing chemistry together… that should continue even if I’m wearing a mask, but wouldn’t be the same if it were someone *else* behind the mask.
Not sure why this is surprising to everyone. Danny, in any universe, has always been a little wishy washy until you back him into a corner and force to him to make a big decision. And when that happens, he’s often demonstrated a good level of intelligence and maturity. Unfortunately, the few times he gets backed into a corner and doesn’t do that tends to be when somebody dies. Hoping that doesn’t play out in this universe too.
Also, anyone else having trouble deciding whether he’s describing Amber or Amazigirl is this strip? Assuming he hasn’t realized the two are the same yet.
This is the most beautiful piece of romantic development I’ve seen in a comic for a while. So, this shouldn’t get screwed up, or else I’ll declare “the author is dead” once again ;-).
Somebody refresh my memory, please — Danny broke up with Dorothy; fell for Amazi-Girl; and has now shown some signs of tenderness towards Amber (who we all know is also Amazi-Girl). And Amber (as Amazi-Girl) has shared a few pleasant moments with Danny. But who, if anybody, was *AMBER’S* interest (as Amber, not Amazi-Girl) focused on? If anything sinks the good ship Dannan Damber, that would be the thing that does it.
Something I’d like to point out: the strip did not actually end on “and so I’m sorry”. It ended with a shot of Amber’s face reacting to the revelation of Danny’s real feelings regarding her. It also did not end with an ellipsis, indicating that he was not finished speaking and was merely pausing. It seems pretty clear to me that he’s apologizing to her for being an idiot about their relationship, and not the other depressing things you guys are speculating.
To clarify, I meant that the presence of an ellipsis would “indicat[e] that he was not finished speaking and was merely pausing”. There was not one (there was a period instead), which means that this is not the way he articulated the sentiment.
Wow, Danny just levelled up. And I suspect someone will be getting some sexytimes tonight. Maybe there will be fireworks (Johnny Dangerously reference).

Agreed. I think there may be some confusing going on here, between Roomies! Danny, who was a sanctimonious jerk (as Willis, in the ongoing commentary, is happy to remind us), and DoA Danny, who’s awfully clueless but not a jerk. At all.
The characters, or rather how Willis sees them in his mind, has grown and changed over time. This is a rethinking/reevaluation of who Danny is.

It sure changes your perspective on characters when you peruse the Walkyverse archives. It certainly makes one think about, was this character always this way and just didn’t or didn’t know how to show it?
I had this experience regarding Mike. The hatefuckfest with Amber that grows into a real, meaningful, loving relationship casts a lot of his actions in IW! in a very different light. Mike has quite possibly the most productive and mature hate I’ve ever seen.
Sorry, I can’t let that pass. Refused to tell him? He asked her not to, because he preferred the fantasy to the reality. He wanted a story romance, not a true love. If, as this strip seems to show, he has realised that the real Amber is much better than his Lois Lane fantasy bullshit, then there’s hope for him yet.

I honestly wasn’t as fond of her in SP! as I am in DoA. Sadly, it was difficult to appreciate her appearances here, as the presence of Danny tainted the majority of them.
This strip, however, sealed the deal for me.
She’s different in SP!, but I’m impressed at how much she grew and evolved as a character. Her DoA incarnation is a based more on that matured concept of who Amber is rather than who she started out as lo these many moons ago.
You got off to a poor start, Danny-boy, but what an epic recovery. The look on Amber’s face says it all. Two thumbs WAY up!

I recently got home from the wedding of one of my best friends, who had not been in the greatest of relationships previously. Her new husband is completely different from her previous experiences and the look she gave him during the vows is exactly the same as Amber’s. I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but right now Danny’s dawning realization of what Amber is to him makes him an Amazi-guy.

Danny has emotionally grown five or ten years in four little panels. So many males are never that honest with themselves or with their mates; those that are, can take years to get to that stage.
In this way it’s a little bit of wish fulfillment. I prefer to take it as art (and I’m sure experience) showing an example for readers to mull over and, inshallah, take to heart.

Okay, I hate to say it, but here’s my prediction:
One or two story beats from now, this foursome will run into Dorothy and her parents. Amber will immediately freak out and decide that Danny only wants to be with her because she looks like Dorothy. Danny will be helpless to point out that this is actually the reason he resisted her for so long since that would mean he would have to admit that he’s “dating” Amazi-girl. (Indeed, the main reason he went after Amazi-girl in the first place was to resist what he felt towards Amber.) Tragic misunderstanding/romantic wackiness ensues.
But she already knows about Dorothy, I swear there was a conversation where he was talking to her and saying ‘I’d like to date you but you look so like my old girlfriend I’d be afraid it was a rebound.’
Danny’s mentioned several times that he doesn’t want to be with Amber because she looks like Dorothy. He’s been pretty obnoxious about it, actually.

I’m trying to figure out what Danny thinks he’s saying, whether he thinks he’s making this up out of whole cloth, imagining he were dating Amber, or talking about Amazi-girl. In any of these cases, the fact that Danny thinks he’s lying – or basically, is lying – kind of knocks the wind out of the feel sails.
So you think he’s saying “I’m sorry” to Amber because you believe he’s making up this whole speech on the fly? My take is that I think he’s saying “I’m sorry” because in one brief minute he’s become aware that he’s been a real douche to Amber – and is really, truly sorry for keeping her at arm’s length. And once he does know this, he can never ever un-know it.
I think (and hope) you are right. But it is also possible that he is talking about his feelings for Amazi-Girl, and he is apologising to Amber because he doesn’t really feel that way about her, and knows that she wishes he did.
The thing is, that almost seems worse, since not knowing that this is his girlfriend, to be sincere in this puts him within sniffing distance of an emotional affair. Imagine if they weren’t the same? If this were Pete instead of Clark…?
Mmm, that’s tricky. On the one hand, you could say he’s a whiff away from being a cheater. On the other hand, I have to wonder . . . what would happen if I started courting my husband as a masked superhero and, for some crazy reason, he couldn’t tell it was me? It would be kind of weird if he *didn’t* have feelings for my alter ego. I mean . . . if I’m exactly the same person.. and we have amazing chemistry together… that should continue even if I’m wearing a mask, but wouldn’t be the same if it were someone *else* behind the mask.

Danny has unlocked the power of guts!!
Not sure why this is surprising to everyone. Danny, in any universe, has always been a little wishy washy until you back him into a corner and force to him to make a big decision. And when that happens, he’s often demonstrated a good level of intelligence and maturity. Unfortunately, the few times he gets backed into a corner and doesn’t do that tends to be when somebody dies. Hoping that doesn’t play out in this universe too.
Also, anyone else having trouble deciding whether he’s describing Amber or Amazigirl is this strip? Assuming he hasn’t realized the two are the same yet.
Next comic is going to be Danny’s parents being complete A-holes isn’t it.
This is the most beautiful piece of romantic development I’ve seen in a comic for a while. So, this shouldn’t get screwed up, or else I’ll declare “the author is dead” once again ;-).

And Amber (as Amazi-Girl) has shared a few pleasant moments with Danny. But who, if anybody, was *AMBER’S* interest (as Amber, not Amazi-Girl) focused on? If anything sinks the good ship Dannan Damber, that would be the thing that does it.

It also did not end with an ellipsis, indicating that he was not finished speaking and was merely pausing. It seems pretty clear to me that he’s apologizing to her for being an idiot about their relationship, and not the other depressing things you guys are speculating.
