Yeah, this is my thought. She’s actually way more nervous about this than he is. I thought she’d be cool with it, but this is like… uncharacteristically neurotic of her? I guess she worries more about appearances than she lets on…
If I’m the president of the united states, I will hire a team of special affect artists to make explosions and epic wind every time I perform a speech.
And a team of artists to create a comic of you beating up terrorists dressed like supervillains, complete with POW, SHWOOP, and BAMs with every blow. Who would be the sidekick though?
I may have to revise my thoughts on whether she only considers this a “for fun” relationship, as she appears more stressed over this meeting than Amber did when she initially saw her father room. Actually her face kind of reminds me of Walky when he first started threw Monkey Master at her. I mean, it is probably still only for fun, but she seems to have more invested in these results than someone dressing him for future girlfriends. It IS having more impact than the incident with Joyce or the realization Dan didn’t mention the break-up to his parents. Now to figure out if it is her being worried about her parents’ view of her for dating Walky or if she doesn’t want them to dislike Walky. It is likely some combination of both, but I am interested to see where Willis goes with this.
I’ll be honest, I was NOT remotely expecting Dorothy to stress over this meeting, and was actually more concerned about Dorothy meeting Walky’s parents, though that hasn’t faded, it has just been overshadowed for now. I also appear to be abusing commas.
It’s mostly that she isn’t completely honest with herself about what she does. She told Dan she wanted to break up because of her career plans, but that wasn’t really true – or else she wouldn’t have started to date Walky. Similarly, she’s not honest to herself about how much she likes Walky. She’s a smart and conscientious person, though, so it doesn’t usually hurt anyone (more than her breakup would have anyway), but she’ll have to learn to be more honest to herself at some point, or she’ll be a very unhappy person.
Actually, I think I know what she’s worried about. The more Walky is in headlights mode, the more similar he will appear to Dan, the more cocky he is, the Less he seems like Dan. If he seems too close to Dan, then she’s worried her parents will ask her why exactly she dumped him in the first place. Much in the same way one of the things putting Dan off dating Amber is that, visually at least, she’s a “Dorothy Clone”. Dorothy especially wants to show that Dan just wasn’t for her, and Walky is, or justify going against her original “single in college to focus on her career” plan.
He just admitted a few strips ago that the reason he was put off from dating Amber is because he is a self-saboteur, as well as intimidated by her. He was just using the whole “Dorothy clone” thing as an excuse, as he is prone to doing with pretty much everything.
I’d still say Joe pointing that put to him may be part of his hesitance. Just because it was an excuse, doesn’t mean it can’t be just a little bit true too. The best excuses are, it makes them a little bit more believable…
If you said you don’t want to go down into the basement, as the light is broken, so you won’t be able to see what you are doing, when really you’re afraid of the dark and spiders, that doesn’t make the excuse untrue, just not your Main reason.
I’d say that Dorothy actually is more concerned that Walky will appear to be just like Danny to her parents, than Danny is concerned with the “Dorothy Clone” thing, partly due to the fact that She dumped Danny (so replacing him with another Danny would seem pointless), and partly because she does like Walky’s cocky attitude.
Very good points. I’ll admit, I had only a passing thought that Walky had been acting Danny style as far as confidence went until Dorothy’s nervousness snapped him out of it. I didn’t think any deeper into it, yet now that I do, I wonder as to how much conforming to Dorothy’s mini-freak out he will stand, especially as she is accurately describing his ability to remain confident in most situations. Just not in a flattering way. “Be yourself, just… you know… a specific version of yourself” I will admit that I am looking forward to any potential sparks between their parents and am slightly sad that Dorothy’s mom is not likely to receive a Monkey Master toy.
I wonder how much of Dorothy’s nervousness is normal for her and how much of this is generated because of how unpleasant Joyce’s parents were. I know if I introduced my parents to a friend only to have that friend’s parents haul him or her off distrustfully… well, that’d make me pretty neurotic.

I think Dorothy would not react very well to her parents dragging her (or at this point Walky) away. That would be fun to explain to everyone. “Yeah… uhmm… they’ll probably bring him back. Actually, I don’t think Dorothy is actually giving Walky advice; I think these are her internal thoughts. Willis said yesterday that drawing the normal ‘thought bubbles’ took twice as long. So I’m guessing that the waviness of the speech-bubble’s tail is supposed to indicate that these are what Dorothy is thinking, not necessarily saying.
It could also mean that she is saying these at a level only Walky is meant to hear, but I seriously doubt that.
There’s pretty clear comics speech bubble shorthand for each of these things. This falls under “uneasy muttering.” She is clearly communicating with Walky and Walky alone, given his reactions to her. Otherwise, it would be either solid or broken in some clear way.. As much as I like and admire Willis, I highly doubt he’d try to buck these fairly sensible trends in a webcomic.

When I said I didn’t draw any thought bubbles, it didn’t mean I willfully ignore what cartoon iconography means. It just meant that I choose not to spell out any internalized thought processes. (Except for when they say them out loud.)

I don’t think dinosaurs are generally accepted to have been endothermic anymore, either. Would have to ask Dina, though. I haven’t really been keeping up with developments in the field. Back in my day, dinosaurs were slow, stupid, cold-blooded, and featherless.
This reminded me of a couple I know. Whenever something bad happened and one of them was upset, the other would always stay calm and collected. At least until the trouble passed or the first one calmed down…
This is actually a vital rule for a successful marriage: Only one of you gets to be crazy at a time.
And if both of you are about to be crazy at the same time, the one who is the least crazy has to hold it together. The way to determine the least crazy is one easy question: Do you notice that both of you are about to be crazy at the same time? If you do, then you are the least crazy, as you are still gathered up enough to realize that both of you are starting to unravel.
I feel sort of bad saying it, but I wish more things would totally freak Dorothy out such that she makes her panel 4 face, because that face is ridiculous.
I think the reason she is so worried about this is she never considered him permanent boyfriend material, he’s just some guy who she knew there was mutual attraction with. Which is really a bummer for Walky, even though he knew from the start this was a for fun relationship the fact that she looks down on him kind of sucks. I feel like she thinks less of him than her parents do at this point.
So I misread that line at first and thought it said “deer-w-headlights”, like “deer with headlights”, and all I could think of was that scene in Dumb and Dumber where the girl takes off her shirt, but instead of a girl I imagined it was a deer and aaaa AAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Actually, yes. There is nothing like somebody else taking over the panicking for letting you get a grip. Because the ground is covered then. I do regular trips with a group where one girl is exceeding easy to piss off when circumstances are contrary. So you smile and shrug it off. Guess what, when she skipped one year, there were situations where one had no one to take over the “pissed off ” part, so it became much harder to shrug it off.
And the way David draws this, it definitely seems on the last frame as if Walky is off his panic because he has Dorothy’s to worry about.
Clearly the next comic will be Dorothy’s parents stripping Walky for the sake of full examination. Dorothy is used to this sort of thing by now and believes it to be customary.

Willis said yesterday that drawing the normal ‘thought bubbles’ took twice as long. So I’m guessing that the waviness of the speech-bubble’s tail is supposed to indicate that these are what Dorothy is thinking, not necessarily saying.
It could also mean that she is speaking at a level only Walky is meant to hear, but I seriously doubt that.
Well, Walky can clearly hear what she’s saying in this strip. Either that or he’s just wondering why she’s making awkward faces.
When I said I didn’t draw any thought bubbles, it didn’t mean I willfully ignore what cartoon iconography means. It just meant that I choose not to spell out any internalized thought processes. (Except for when they say them out loud.)
Which is why Joyce and Walky will likely not need thought bubbles any time soon. It is also why Mike is so ominously silent for long periods of time. Horrible… amazing… silence…

The fact that the first panel he is in on this strip only shows one brow leads me to believe they are somewhere on the floor, slowly crawling towards sculpted caramel.

I think the reason she is so worried about this is she never considered him permanent boyfriend material, he’s just some guy who she knew there was mutual attraction with. Which is really a bummer for Walky, even though he knew from the start this was a for fun relationship the fact that she looks down on him kind of sucks. I feel like she thinks less of him than her parents do at this point.

Actually, yes. There is nothing like somebody else taking over the panicking for letting you get a grip. Because the ground is covered then. I do regular trips with a group where one girl is exceeding easy to piss off when circumstances are contrary. So you smile and shrug it off. Guess what, when she skipped one year, there were situations where one had no one to take over the “pissed off ” part, so it became much harder to shrug it off.
And the way David draws this, it definitely seems on the last frame as if Walky is off his panic because he has Dorothy’s to worry about.
