Actually, Blaine’s dialog here makes me wonder if he’s aware of the whole Amazi-girl thing. Perhaps Amazi-girl’s origin story comes from Sal’s convenience store hold-up, so Blaine was witness to an early iteration.
The alternative means being responsible for how well things are or aren’t working out in his life, and while that CAN be enpowering in the longterm, it’s also very alien and scary….While his current Rut is Familiar.

Blaine said that he and Danny were at a “more neutral place just outside of town”, so they’re not at Noodles & Co. any longer. But how does Amber — who I notices slipped back into her Amazi-Girl voice — know where to find them?
Well the following comic has completely deflated this theory, but, for the sake of answering your question, it’s not as if Blaine can just grab Danny and tie him up in the middle of campus. The nice guy act could very well have been a ruse to lure him somewhere more secluded to do the deed.
So, I’ve been thinking… what exactly is Blaine’s endgame? Is his sole purpose in life just to make Amber miserable, or does he actually want something?
What he wants is to watch the light in her eyes fade as she looks up to him and admits that he’s the center of the universe, though he probably thinks he just wants the respect that the good parent he thinks he is deserves.
Not to presume too much into Willis’ character, but with people like this, it’s generally just “This person belongs to me; I should have complete control over her life and what she does with it.” If she steps out of line, making her miserable is a punishment for the disobedience. What he wants is essentially for her to act like he’s in control. He can complain about lack of spine all he wants; that’s precisely what he’s looking for.
This covers a thought I had the other day. I couldn’t put together a specific scenario that led to Blaine and Danny meeting Amazi-Girl, but I could see Blaine looking her contemptuously and saying something like, “You’re still playing dress-up as a super-hero, Amber?”
Then watching the tumblers spinning in Danny’s head finally click and proceeding from there. Preferably with them as a couple and no more Amazi-Girl secrets between them, but that part’s irrelevant to my happiness. It would still be nice, though.
Unfortunately, if Blaine calls out Amber as Amazigirl, I have a terrible feeling any Amazi-powers will drain away, particularly if he does something like unmasking her. Facing your abuser is a terrible thing; the temptation to revert to the familiar dynamic is overwhelming, and you know, deep down inside (because you were indoctrinated with this knowledge) that you are the one in the wrong, you are the terrible person, and that you need to just straighten out and fly right.
I don’t envy Amber what’s coming, not one little bit.
You are right about the strong tendency to fall back into The Pattern, but you’ve got to either confront OR turn 180 and just walk away (figuratively, literally, or both).
Really? I think he deserves something worse, like being a mental vegetable but still somehow conscious. Some sort of “And I Must Scream” moment would be what he deserves.
That just continues him being a waste of resources; he couldn’t be a mental vegetable without a hospital, and those are resources and services people much more deserving desperately need.
Some people don’t cease to be a waste of resources until they’re dead, cremated on a funeral pyre that doubles as heating for the homeless, and flushed down the toilet with the Haribo gummy bear diarrhea you endured for the sake of confirming that particular artificially-sweetened gastric hazard.
I know Willis promised that no one gets hit with a truck in this comic, but…
Amber’s on a truck right now. I know this is a fairly realistic webcomic, but just this once would it hurt for her to ride it through the wall and crush Blaine? While she waves a cowboy hat in the air?
Then she thanks the truck, which turns into Optimus Prime, brofists her, and says “No problem. Freedom is the right of all sentient beings”, then dons the hat and walks away into the sunset?
…I just realized. Willis promised no trucks. He said nothing about, say, a red car. It would make sense for AG to ‘borrow’ a ride, and when she’s driving towards the rendezvous, see how Blaine makes a perfect target standing in front of a window like that.
Not what I was referencing, but I’d forgotten about UC. She makes this plausible. Something Positive hit a lead character from another comic with a red car once, leading to a spate of comics having random background red car hit-and-runs. Perfect for Blaine. I don’t want to read another strip, hell, another panel, featuring him. A one-panel death and then vanishing is perfect.
Honestly, children should be allowed to beat the shit out of their abusive parents without repercussions once they’re out from under their power. I really know all the legal and moral issues involved with that, I do, but still, Amber should be allowed to take a crowbar to Blaine.
Do people like Blaine need a reason, an endgame?
He demands respect and attention and she will listen to his commands or else. He just can’t go away until he breaks her.
If he had a reason, could we understand it. The man is not right x10.

Before the last panel, I was all like “Oh man, he’s gonna tell Danny about Amazi-girl!” Then the last panel made me go “Oh man, he has no clue that Amazi-girl isn’t a lesbian with Amber!”
I think I’d rather see blaine in the grill of the truck…even if willis said no one gets hit by a truck….UNLESS blaine is TECHNICALLY no one and he IS going to get hit by a truck! I SEE THROUGH YOUR CLEVER RUSE WILLIS! I SHALL NOT BE TOYED WITH BY YOUR FEELS TRAIN ANY LONGER!!
of course this all ends with amazi-girl attacking blaine, and danny stepping in to stop her, outraged that his idol love interest whatever is attacking an innocent man when she’s supposed to stand for peace and goodness and justice, and amber interprets it as danny siding with her evil father, and this drives an irrevocable wedge between amber and danny, ensuring their mutual misery, which is just what blaine planned, because a more miserable and isolated amber is an amber easier to control, and then everyone hates danny that much more and amber collapses deeper into the vortex of agony that is her life in dumbing of age, and then willis laughs and drinks chocolate milk
Blaine is a low-functioning sociopath. His plans depend on him keeping an even temper, and he won’t do that if anything happens he doesn’t like. It wouldn’t be unlikely for him to reveal his thug side, to be the first to raise his voice, or his hand. . .unless Amber’s about to do something stupid.
I’m thinkin’ that Amazi-Girl jumps off the truck, feet first, and Blaine breaks her fall with his chest. (Call it a heart attack.) Amazi-Girl finishes Blaine off while he still has the wind knocked out of him, unable to reveal her identity. (He saw the “comic book stuff” in her closet, on the first day of Freshman Family Weekend.) Dan steps out of the car, watching her moves, and says, “Gosh! If I hadn’t already figured out your secret identity, I’d be guessing that you were really Amber!”
or… “Amazigirl shows up to beat Blaine to a bloody pulp then runs off… and Amber shows up a few minutes later to find an unconcious, barely breathing Blaine…” *Feigning innocence* “OH MY GOSH! WHAT HAPPENED!?!”
What would she tell the police? “I punched my father in the face yesterday after he visited me at college, and now he’s going to embarrass me to my boyfriend!” Obviously nothing Blaine’s done has been okay, but there’s nothing they can really do.
I’d rant about how I hope this goes down, but Willis drew the conclusion months ago so all there is to do is watch it happen. It’s not like a football game where I can psychically affect the outcome.
1) Could Amber possibly be interpreting this conversation as Blaine holding Danny hostage? Or is that too dramatic? Or does level of drama even matter anymore???
2) So we now understand that Amber changes her voice when she is Amazi-Girl (possibly we knew this before, but I can’t remember). I’m curious how it changes, like in quality. Is it lower, higher, more nasal, etc. Obviously this is not essential information, but I am intrigued. It’s a cool detail that I never thought about.
Also, depending on how different Amber’s voice is from Amazi-Girl’s voice, it could partially explain how Danny could be so oblivious as to not realize that Amber is Amazi-Girl. But then again, he thinks that Sal is Amazi-Girl even though Sal has a southern dialect (I think?). But maybe I am over analyzing. And by ‘maybe’ I mean yes, I am.
I don’t think it’s ever been stated implicitly, but just assumed that Amber’s “hero voice” is symbolized by the white text against dark color in Amazi-Girl’s voice balloons.
*facepalm* That should be “explicitly.” It has been shown implicitly multiple times. I will now go give myself twenty lashes with a dictionary, somehow.
Blaine is holding Danny’s regard for Amber hostage. Close enough for rock and roll, as the kids say.
And it just occurred to me the blue word balloons might indicate she’s making her voice cold. A relentless and abiding absence of emotion, chilling to the listener; that could even make sense with the dissociative disorder she seems to have
If I were in Amber’s shoes I’d say these exact words: “You can’t own me, so you’re going to try to destroy my life. That’s not mature, meaningful or even a little original, but good luck. Maybe you can manipulate him against me. And maybe if you try long enough and hard enough you’ll eventually do something stupid enough that I can have you arrested.”
Though judging by the expressions in the last two panels I think we’re heading for a much more satisfying climax. Secret identities revealed, assholes put in their proper place, maybe? A wheelchair, maybe? Please let it be a wheelchair.
Federal crime = everywhere in America.
The justification for making kidnapping a Federal offense (therefore under the FBI’s jurisdiction) is than a kidnapped person might be taken to another state. The FBI isn’t able to deal with purely in-state crime unless an exception is weaseled in there.
It’s kidnapping if Danny says he wants to get out of the car and Blaine won’t let him. But yeah, he’s good enough at manipulation that he’ll probably not have to worry about anyone finding out, let alone proving it.
Did you know you’re not allowed to keep driving with a passenger who tells you they want out of your car? There’s probably thousands of kidnappings happening every year that no one notices, including the people involved.
After seeing the tone of that last response – and just witnessing what Amber can do – I don’t think we should be afraid for Amber. I think Blaine should be afraid *of* Amber. God, I hope I’m right. I’m dealing with an abusive father right now, I don’t think I could handle seeing Amber go through the same thing right now.
Now here’s another prediction.
Amber WILL beat up Blaine.
It will be like Edward beating up the Sewing Life Alchemist.
You know they deserve it. You know they deserve worse.
But…
It’ll go too far.
And people will argue over whether she ever went far enough.

I guess i focused a little too much on Ed’s age there. Seriously, i know it’s screwed up, but a kid, who is fifteen i believe, beat an adult to death seems like a tad much for the kid. Seriously, Ed deserved better.

From the preview on the tumblr, I’m guessing Amber as Amazigirl beats Blaine up, which causes Dorothy to become worried about the Amazigirl situation (Dorothy seems worried in the tumblr).
Either that or those worried expressions have to do with her relationship with Walky and those comments a few days of weren’t far off the mark. Which wouldn’t be that unlikely, considering the high level of drama in Dumbing of Age.
Either that, or something different or far craftier is planned by Willis.
There are a lot of people in this comment section that don’t know the meaning of Dramatic Irony. And if they do, they’re -really- bad at recognizing it.
Finally Danny gets to know who his girlfriend really is, hes gunna feel like shit for treating amber the way he did, I am expecting Apology Muffins in the morning.
“Wha? Amazi-girl just came out of nowhere and started beating up Amber’s dad for no reason! That’s horrible! And when I tried to stop her and ask her to explain, she refused to! I thought she was a hero, helping people in need, but I was wrong; she’s gone crazy. I was wrong to ever go out with her.”

I actually really hope Amber does the sensible thing and contact someone to help accompany her. It’s just a shame that Ruth has no jurisdiction outside the campus grounds, she barely knows Sarah, and Dina has yet to realize her dinosaur powers.
Her only other allies are Ethan and Mike. Which does not a good superhero sidekick make. But telling someone like Dorothy, who she knows is writing for the newspaper, could be something.
…Hmm, from a logical standpoint, I don’t think Blaine’s got anything to gain from tellin’ Danny her secrets, if anything it will cement how big an asshole this guy is even to the utterly naive eyes of Dan, but I understand how this could hurt Amber emotionally, which is what he seeks, emotional control.
But Amber is gonna throw a curve-ball at him by showing up as her masked alter-ego, one who Danny implicitly trusts, and it will all fall down like a flimsy house of cards.
…did I just predict how this arc will end?! O_O
Yeah, but if Blaine’s telling her friends what’s going on (and Danny’s believing him, don’t forget that), he’s going to be painting himself in the better light. “She punched me, and all I was trying to do was visit her!” or something.
What’s this on the menu about eating raw or undercooked foods? Oh nooooeeeesss, sunny side up eggs, massively fatal case of salmonella. Danny’s fine. Like they say in anime, “idiots don’t get sick”. If only.

What if the article was about Amazi-Girl being sent to prison for assault, and Danny still hadn’t realized it was Amber?
My hope is for Amber and AG showing up in one person. Enough of this secret identity and semi-psychotic breaks. It turns out that Clark Kent can fly and Bruce Wayne can kick ass. It’s time for Amber to be IMMUNE FROM CRITICISM all the time, not just when she is wearing the mask.
I imagine him to be at LEAST 45, if he has a daughter old enough to be in college. Sure it’s possible, but I just don’t imagine him to have gotten married and become a father by 22 years old.
All the “Get him!” comments make me a little sad. This is a much more realistic universe. If she beats the crap out of Blaine, it will go badly for her in the long run. If she kills him, it’ll go worse. If it comes to violence at all, it will be bad for her legally, and probably harmful to her psyche.
But then again, grounded in reality isn’t the same as reality.
I still would’ve laid him out with the way he was acting in the first place. Family or not you do not treat others like that. Respect is to be earned am I right?

Just jumping in to say that the “Big Bad Harv” DID storyline for Harvey in TAS was probably one of the few things that really annoyed me about the series, if only because they couldn’t even bother to think of a different name for the alter. As a side note, I’d love to see a story where it’s determined that Two-Face’s DID is entirely the product of Iatrogenesis.

In case you haven’t been reading Willis’s works for the last decade and a half, there’s a reason why he uses @damnyouwillis as a Twitter handle. That was the phrase most used in the forums over at Keenspot, and later at the Nightstar Zoo. Willis is well known for flawed characters who we all fall in love with. Being a fan of the Walkyverse and Dumbingverse means reading too much into the comics. If they weren’t flawed, we wouldn’t enjoy reading so much.
Besides, you can already see growth in pretty much all of the characters, despite the relatively short time period that has passed to them (has it even been a month yet?). Walky is, admittedly grudgingly, maturing as a person thanks to Dorothy’s influence. He’s dressing better, and taking school a little more seriously. Dorothy is taking school a little less seriously,which she frankly needed to do (all work and no play makes Dotty a dull girl). And even Joyce is doing some growing up. Her best friend is an atheist fer crissake! Danny is due for some growth himself, so I bet Amazigirl is going to be revealed pretty soon.

So, I’ve been thinking… what exactly is Blaine’s endgame? Is his sole purpose in life just to make Amber miserable, or does he actually want something?

What he wants is to watch the light in her eyes fade as she looks up to him and admits that he’s the center of the universe, though he probably thinks he just wants the respect that the good parent he thinks he is deserves.
Not to presume too much into Willis’ character, but with people like this, it’s generally just “This person belongs to me; I should have complete control over her life and what she does with it.” If she steps out of line, making her miserable is a punishment for the disobedience. What he wants is essentially for her to act like he’s in control. He can complain about lack of spine all he wants; that’s precisely what he’s looking for.

This covers a thought I had the other day. I couldn’t put together a specific scenario that led to Blaine and Danny meeting Amazi-Girl, but I could see Blaine looking her contemptuously and saying something like, “You’re still playing dress-up as a super-hero, Amber?”
Then watching the tumblers spinning in Danny’s head finally click and proceeding from there. Preferably with them as a couple and no more Amazi-Girl secrets between them, but that part’s irrelevant to my happiness. It would still be nice, though.

Facing your abuser is a terrible thing; the temptation to revert to the familiar dynamic is overwhelming, and you know, deep down inside (because you were indoctrinated with this knowledge) that you are the one in the wrong, you are the terrible person, and that you need to just straighten out and fly right.

of course this all ends with amazi-girl attacking blaine, and danny stepping in to stop her, outraged that his idol love interest whatever is attacking an innocent man when she’s supposed to stand for peace and goodness and justice, and amber interprets it as danny siding with her evil father, and this drives an irrevocable wedge between amber and danny, ensuring their mutual misery, which is just what blaine planned, because a more miserable and isolated amber is an amber easier to control, and then everyone hates danny that much more and amber collapses deeper into the vortex of agony that is her life in dumbing of age, and then willis laughs and drinks chocolate milk

I wish I could be pumped for Amazigirl vs Blaine, but there is absolutely no way this can possibly end well for anyone.
I am having some thoughts and wish to share them:
1) Could Amber possibly be interpreting this conversation as Blaine holding Danny hostage? Or is that too dramatic? Or does level of drama even matter anymore???
2) So we now understand that Amber changes her voice when she is Amazi-Girl (possibly we knew this before, but I can’t remember). I’m curious how it changes, like in quality. Is it lower, higher, more nasal, etc. Obviously this is not essential information, but I am intrigued. It’s a cool detail that I never thought about.
Also, depending on how different Amber’s voice is from Amazi-Girl’s voice, it could partially explain how Danny could be so oblivious as to not realize that Amber is Amazi-Girl. But then again, he thinks that Sal is Amazi-Girl even though Sal has a southern dialect (I think?). But maybe I am over analyzing. And by ‘maybe’ I mean yes, I am.

I don’t think it’s ever been stated implicitly, but just assumed that Amber’s “hero voice” is symbolized by the white text against dark color in Amazi-Girl’s voice balloons.

Amber started changing her Amazi-voice on 15May2012. He lampshaded it by asking if she was disguising her voice.

If I were in Amber’s shoes I’d say these exact words: “You can’t own me, so you’re going to try to destroy my life. That’s not mature, meaningful or even a little original, but good luck. Maybe you can manipulate him against me. And maybe if you try long enough and hard enough you’ll eventually do something stupid enough that I can have you arrested.”
Though judging by the expressions in the last two panels I think we’re heading for a much more satisfying climax. Secret identities revealed, assholes put in their proper place, maybe? A wheelchair, maybe? Please let it be a wheelchair.

in most places in american it’s a federal offense to commit kidnapping or abduction of any kind…minor or otherwise.
Federal crime = everywhere in America.
The justification for making kidnapping a Federal offense (therefore under the FBI’s jurisdiction) is than a kidnapped person might be taken to another state. The FBI isn’t able to deal with purely in-state crime unless an exception is weaseled in there.
I’m sure we’re not that lucky. Usually people like him know how to manipulate the law and people’s behaviors to their liking.

From the preview on the tumblr, I’m guessing Amber as Amazigirl beats Blaine up, which causes Dorothy to become worried about the Amazigirl situation (Dorothy seems worried in the tumblr).
Either that or those worried expressions have to do with her relationship with Walky and those comments a few days of weren’t far off the mark. Which wouldn’t be that unlikely, considering the high level of drama in Dumbing of Age.
Either that, or something different or far craftier is planned by Willis.

Her only other allies are Ethan and Mike. Which does not a good superhero sidekick make. But telling someone like Dorothy, who she knows is writing for the newspaper, could be something.

All the “Get him!” comments make me a little sad. This is a much more realistic universe. If she beats the crap out of Blaine, it will go badly for her in the long run. If she kills him, it’ll go worse. If it comes to violence at all, it will be bad for her legally, and probably harmful to her psyche.

Just jumping in to say that the “Big Bad Harv” DID storyline for Harvey in TAS was probably one of the few things that really annoyed me about the series, if only because they couldn’t even bother to think of a different name for the alter. As a side note, I’d love to see a story where it’s determined that Two-Face’s DID is entirely the product of Iatrogenesis.

In case you haven’t been reading Willis’s works for the last decade and a half, there’s a reason why he uses @damnyouwillis as a Twitter handle. That was the phrase most used in the forums over at Keenspot, and later at the Nightstar Zoo. Willis is well known for flawed characters who we all fall in love with. Being a fan of the Walkyverse and Dumbingverse means reading too much into the comics. If they weren’t flawed, we wouldn’t enjoy reading so much.
Besides, you can already see growth in pretty much all of the characters, despite the relatively short time period that has passed to them (has it even been a month yet?). Walky is, admittedly grudgingly, maturing as a person thanks to Dorothy’s influence. He’s dressing better, and taking school a little more seriously. Dorothy is taking school a little less seriously,which she frankly needed to do (all work and no play makes Dotty a dull girl). And even Joyce is doing some growing up. Her best friend is an atheist fer crissake! Danny is due for some growth himself, so I bet Amazigirl is going to be revealed pretty soon.
