It’s the superman identity thing. Not the one that superman doesn’t need a secret identity. The one that even though superman looks physically like Clark Kent, Superman doesn’t slouch, isn’t meek, and just overall acts completely different. Couple that with mankinds tendency to remember events how they thanked they happened rather than exactly how they happened, and no one ever thinks that they’re the same two people. The one small difference of a mask or not makes two different people, because that’s what people believe

Try going from glasses to no glasses, dressing unusually for you, and a different hair style, people who know you will have a hard time recognizing, add on that she works primarily at night. Trust me on this one. I recently went from long hair my entire life to short hair, and wearing glasses which I haven’t done since high school. I’ve had to deal with a lot of cases of people seeming to not know who the fuck I am until I talk. Now imagine I was disguising my voice as Amazigirl clearly does.
Paul McCartney slicked back his hair, put on a pair of glasses, and a fake mustache and went around Paris completely unnoticed at the height of Beatlemania. He got back to the hotel and George Harrison didn’t even recognize him.
I think it’s the other way around. It’s not that Dina’s seeing more than everyone else; it’s that she’s seeing less. All the little subtle things about Amber’s mannerisms and body language that change when she puts the mask on, all the things that subconsciously communicate to people with fully-functioning social senses, “This awesome ass-kicking superheroine is not that timid reclusive girl who lives on your floor”… Dina can’t see anyway. So to her, Amazi-Girl is just Amber wearing a cape.
Yeah I read her that way too, not dxed because she’s canonically not dxed as anything, but Aut. (Girls go undiagnosed until college so often if they’re conventionally smart and can talk it’s not even funny…)
I know some other Autistic people who read her that way too.
I’m reminded of the webcomic Freefall. In that, robots can disguise themselves to other robots by switching transponders with vehicles. “Why is a motorcycle talking to me?” Nonrobots actually look at what’s there and are not fooled.
I think Dina doesn’t recognize running around in a mask and cape as out of the ordinary or worthy of comment. Her “That’s odd…” sensors are set differently.
My interpretation was that Amber thought something might be in the hall that would trigger an unpleasant flashback or Amazi-Girl episode. Given all of the recent drama involving her alternate persona, perhaps she would be hesitant to allow it to emerge again.
I too had forgotten the flashback to the aftermath of the mini-mart robbery when Amber stabbed Sal in the hand — but don’t forget it was Dorothy and Walky that were chasing her in the first place, and Dorothy then got the article published in the IDS. So it could be either of them.

Look, I don’t know what to call an organ that is more or less specific to one gender besides a genital, although I realize that doing so was rather stupid (I blame it on lack of sleep). And the point I wanted to make (humans naming the group they belong to after mammary glands is rather strange) came across.
Well, Tim’s involved witnessing a specific acrobatic feat that only one boy was capable of and then doing extreme research whereas Dina’s involved not being fooled by wrap around her roommates eyes. But, yeah, I’m cool with Dina being a robin.
There’s also the fact they’re roommate’s it stands to reason that Dina may have seen the costume already, even if just a glimpse. Not that many people would own costume like that, or at least one in those colors, which isn’t identifiable with any fictional superheroes (that we know of for this universe, anyway). She probably just opted to not mention it if that’s the case because it didn’t concern her and she doesn’t seem particularly curious on the things people do on their own time… Not when there’s more dinosaur books to read, at least.
Or… she saw the newspaper and was like “Oh hey, it’s Amber”, but given she’s not very sociable, didn’t say it aloud and likely didn’t mention it to anyone else. At most she probably went “huh. So that’s what she does when she’s out at night.”.
Or… she figured it out before and never said anything because Amazigirl helped her out in some way before like she did Danny and keeping quiet was her way of showing appreciation.
I still want to believe Dina just plain has a grappling hook.
Remember when she accidentally went to the lake with the others and just happened to have a floatation device in her backpack? She’s just THAT prepared.
All while Lame Guy tries desperately to keep Amazi-girls secret identity from falling into the hands of the people, especially Blonde Girl and Lazy Guy.
The idea of hikikomori I I have seen on the internets couldn’t possibly exist, Amber is clearlu a zashiki-warashi, a friendly spirit who causes mischief but also good fortune to the household.
“I couldn’t put the pieces together until just yesterday” doesn’t make much sense for Dorothy. The red panel flashback is where she made a reapprai-Sal.
But Dorothy and Danny were pursuing her with what could only be described as single-mindedness of purpose; they were able to pick up items she had discarded/lost (the shoe, the Transformer, the Amazi-condoms); and then Dorothy got pictures — and wrote an article, the details of which are still unknown — that eventually made the front page of the campus newspaper.
While a couple of other people (Dina and Ethan, for instance) may have some clue as to Amber’s alter ego, Dorothy is the only other person who has come close to figuring it out — and is perfectly willing, in the name of journalism, to blow it sky-high. So I think yesterday’s actions could have also resulted in Dorothy being upgraded from “minor annoyance” to “nemesis” in Amber’s mind.
Dorothy has made her desires clear, she simply wishes an interview. Sal’s the one she had a complete mental breakdown because of (granted, she was already in a weakened state due to other circumstances| but Sal was still the trigger).
She sort of is. Sal is the main villain, she even robbed a convenient convenience store. (And that’s terrible!) It’s part of the origin story of Amazi-Girl.
Of course Dina doesn’t observe the social nicety of pretending not to unravel really poorly concealed secret identities. She doesn’t get the social complexities of something like that.
Somewhere somebody would figure out that Amber and Amazi-Girl were the same person. Somebody whose mind was not clouded by human perceptions and prejudices would notice without a touch of effort that two women were one. If that someone was also capable of grasping the idea that no one on Earth knew it, that this was a disguise and a very effective one, that someone would probably catch the irony in Amber’s first words today.
Amber’s had a few flashback moments regarding a certain person who almost hurt a friend, terrified her into cowering in a corner, and then made her fly into a rage after her father berated her.
Leave it to Dina to notice who Amazi-girl is, her detachment from society in general makes her the perfect person to see through a disguise, for all she knows Amber just liked dressing weird, a costume and a bandana around the eyes isn’t fooling this clever girl
I have to imagine Amber doesn’t wash the Amazi-Girl uniform as often as she should, and investigating where that smell is coming from is one of the better reasons to look through your roommate’s closet.
YES Dina ha ha ha. I love that she doesn’t even consider the superhero thing worth bring up… unless it happens to be relevant to the current conversation.
Something tells me given how sidekick names usually work and Dina’s personality it would likely not be “The Raptor”, but something along the lines of “Dina-nychus”.

Look, I don’t know what to call an organ that is more or less specific to one gender besides a genital, although I realize that doing so was rather stupid (I blame it on lack of sleep). And the point I wanted to make (humans naming the group they belong to after mammary glands is rather strange) came across.

Just as Tim Drake figured out Batman’s identity, so has Dina found out Amber’s.
Well, Tim’s involved witnessing a specific acrobatic feat that only one boy was capable of and then doing extreme research whereas Dina’s involved not being fooled by wrap around her roommates eyes. But, yeah, I’m cool with Dina being a robin.
I mean, in addition to Alfred.
It could also be that as Amber’s roommate, she has seen the cape, jumpsuit, utility belt, and mask and connected the dots.
There’s also the fact they’re roommate’s it stands to reason that Dina may have seen the costume already, even if just a glimpse. Not that many people would own costume like that, or at least one in those colors, which isn’t identifiable with any fictional superheroes (that we know of for this universe, anyway). She probably just opted to not mention it if that’s the case because it didn’t concern her and she doesn’t seem particularly curious on the things people do on their own time… Not when there’s more dinosaur books to read, at least.
Or… she saw the newspaper and was like “Oh hey, it’s Amber”, but given she’s not very sociable, didn’t say it aloud and likely didn’t mention it to anyone else. At most she probably went “huh. So that’s what she does when she’s out at night.”.
Or… she figured it out before and never said anything because Amazigirl helped her out in some way before like she did Danny and keeping quiet was her way of showing appreciation.
Or, it’s just another weird thing a person is doing and could be perfectly natural as far as she knows.
Or, as far as she knows, no one else is mentioning it because not mentioning it is a social norm that she doesn’t want to violate.
Or, it’s not dinosaurs.
Amber’s dad found a friggin grappling hook, I find it completely probable that Dina has seen as much or more.

Amber, I’ve said this before, I’ll say it again, none of the girls on your floor know who you are or care. Sal is not your nemesis.
I believe that the ‘nemesis’ reference in this strip refers to Dorothy, not Sal.

“I couldn’t put the pieces together until just yesterday” doesn’t make much sense for Dorothy. The red panel flashback is where she made a reapprai-Sal.

But Dorothy and Danny were pursuing her with what could only be described as single-mindedness of purpose; they were able to pick up items she had discarded/lost (the shoe, the Transformer, the Amazi-condoms); and then Dorothy got pictures — and wrote an article, the details of which are still unknown — that eventually made the front page of the campus newspaper.
While a couple of other people (Dina and Ethan, for instance) may have some clue as to Amber’s alter ego, Dorothy is the only other person who has come close to figuring it out — and is perfectly willing, in the name of journalism, to blow it sky-high. So I think yesterday’s actions could have also resulted in Dorothy being upgraded from “minor annoyance” to “nemesis” in Amber’s mind.
Dorothy has made her desires clear, she simply wishes an interview. Sal’s the one she had a complete mental breakdown because of (granted, she was already in a weakened state due to other circumstances| but Sal was still the trigger).
If Sal realizes that Amber’s the girl who stabbed her hand, that might change.
She sort of is. Sal is the main villain, she even robbed a convenient convenience store. (And that’s terrible!) It’s part of the origin story of Amazi-Girl.
Who She Is And How She Came To Be
Origin villains are rarely the nemesis. They’re generally minor villains or just one shots.
Joker…
Batman’s parents are occasionally killed by the Joker but usually by some mugger called Joe Chill.
Of course Dina doesn’t observe the social nicety of pretending not to unravel really poorly concealed secret identities. She doesn’t get the social complexities of something like that.

Somebody whose mind was not clouded by human perceptions and prejudices would notice without a touch of effort that two women were one.
