It was never one of my favorites, but I do like it.

I just checked Amazon, you can get the DVD for 9 bucks right now. Alternately, the VCR tape is for sale for nearly $500. I think I need to go raid my parents’ basement…

LOL no. That’s just some indie seller hoping to snare someone desperate/nostalgic enough. Look elsewhere or wait and you’ll see it for far more sane prices.

I know, but new, factory-sealed VHS are selling for about $5 on eBay.

Those sellers are trolling the marketplace for unwary buyers. They can put any price on anything, and if it’s the only one listed, someone might actually think it’s worth that amount.

You know, in the book, Pinocchio killed the cricket (it didn’t have a name IIRC) before the end of the 2rd chapter. He’s an even more thoroughly unlikable brat in it. I was rather surprised when I read it. Probably the only case where disneyfying made sense.

Hell no, imagine if Disney hadn’t altered Sleeping Beauty at all? Have you seen the actual story?

In the original, when the prince goes to find the princess, he doesn’t just kiss her, he rapes her. She doesn’t wake up after this though, so he decides to just leave her there. A while later, she gives birth (twins, I believe), and one of them starts sucking on her finger, the one she pricked, and the splinter comes out, waking her.

I’m really glad Disney decided to completely reinterpret it.

The little Mermaid originally doesn’t get the prince and ends up dissolving into sea foam.

The Hound kills the Fox, and because of the potential for rabies the hunter shoots the Hound.

And the Hunchback of Notre Dame is too graphic for me to comfortably mention so just look it up.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame spends the first 250 pages of a 500 page book describing Paris, the architecture, the people, the politics, during that time period, and then starts the story. That’s the worst part of it.

Snow White has Maleficent dancing herself to death in red hot iron shoes.

And Snow doesn’t wake up from a kiss, she wakes up because the prince just threw her body onto the back of his horse and rode off. The jostling of the horse in full gallop woke her up.

I’m no expert on muteness, but doesn’t most non-selective muteness stem from deafness?

I don’t know what causes Marcie’s muteness but considering she uses sign language it seems less likely to be selective rather than physical. So I can see why people might think deaf-mute.

If someone’s vocal cords don’t work then they can’t speak coherently at all. Not enough sounds can be created by just the tongue and mouth to talk in any complicated capacity.

What’s more, it’s not actually possible to read someone’s lips and understand them completely because so many sounds are caused by things that cannot be clearly seen.

There’s a lot of truth there. Most people that can lip read exceptionally well have some degree of redisual hearing (well, most Deaf people in General have some degree of redisual hearing) and use it in combination with lip reading.
Although, I will say that most words can be figured out simply through context clues.

You are right. Most people who do not speak prefer such because they don’t speak well, itself because they are deaf to some degree. Sure, there are people who can hear but do not speak because they have a mechanical issues with their vocal cords or the part of the brain that controls speech. But they are numerically in the minority.

She took a knee in the midsection, cracked ribs come from getting hit in the side of the body. Also, leg kicks refer to actually getting kicked in the leg (they can be painful if the person kicking is big enough or has kicked someone in the same spot enough times).

I’d like to know her backstory too. She’s a hearing mute, but the latter doesn’t seem to be associated with language deficit. She comprehends and “speaks” fine. What’s the source of her mutism? How did she connect with Sal? An even more interesting question because Sal just moved to campus. Where were the two of them before that? Did they live in town? If they lived elsewhere, how are they both here now? It’s very interesting.

My working theory’s been that Amazi-Girl’s trying to prove that she’s now strong enough – mentally more than physically – brave enough, controlled enough to face the terror that created her with an appropriate and measured response rather than hiding or flipping her shit and stabbing everything. But Sal hasn’t been cooperating by refusing to give her anything to face.

But she has to do it as Amazi-Girl because she doesn’t think Amber can do it.Because Amber and Amazi-Girl aren’t the same person. And Amazi-Girl, she believes, is going to go away when today’s paper comes out, leaving her with just Amber, who is still the terrified little girl she was five years ago.

I dunno, Carla seemed to be against the whole violence for violence’s sake thing. She has been really uncomfortable for the last few strips. She didn’t want to attack when Malaya charged in and got clotheslined, she didn’t want to do anything when Sal told them to “Get her,” and now she’s worried about Malaya’s injuries. I think she’s just relieved to get out of that situation, and isn’t really being her usually aggressive self. She may even feel sorry for AG.

Sure Carla was against the violence for violence’s sake thing, which is plenty of reason to give the finger to the one who was really really for it. That would be Amazi-Girl, who interrupted Carla enjoying a beer with the others and tried very hard to start a fight. Like Yotomoe said, she deserves that finger.

And so the Amazi-Girl vs. Sal feud ends, with a (literal) whimper, not a bang. And that’s a bang as in something blowing up. Not whatever you fleshlings do for kicks. Seriously!

Amber has serious issues. She needs major therapy, and she’s going to be lucky to avoid jail time. I guess that if Blaine doesn’t press charges, and Sal forgets about this in a few hours, Amber might manage to avoid being charged with a felony.

As for Sal, I want to congratulate her. Not many people can control their anger when someone is pushing for a fight. And I’m not talking about not-jobs like Whirl; I’m talking about Rodimus, Drift, Ironhide or Grimlock. Otherwise upstanding ‘Bots who have a hair-trigger temper. In this case, Sal decided not to do what she wanted to, and did what was right. Even if she needed Marcie to remind her what was the right thing. Amber can keep her delusions of being a vigilante crime fighter; Sal is a real hero.

…But Sal doesn’t know that Amazi-Girl is actually Amber; she doesn’t even know about AG, full stop. From her perspective, some wackjob in a superhero suit calling herself Amazi-something attacked her out of the blue.

That is, unless Dorothy decides to publicise Amber’s real identity in the paper.

It doesn’t really matter that Sal has no idea who the nutjob in the jumpsuit and cape is, she was angry enough to fight back, until Marcie urged her not to. And Sal listened to Marcie, and walked away. That’s real heroism.

Though Amazi-Girl was obviously outmuscled when the three girls dogpiled her, I’m a little surprised Malaya’s done this well against her in general. She didn’t win, sure, and everything she did was stupid meanness, but she didn’t do too badly. I’m gonna chalk that up to psychological factors. On the one hand, Amazi-Girl wants her vindication against Sal, to “get it right,” to prove that she’s now the kind of person who can defeat the demons of her youth. Yet being this close to Sal is definitely messing with her confidence. It’s weakening her Amazi, at least some of the time. Her power levels are fluctuating.

No, help’s boring. If superheroes and supervillains went to get help for their psychosis, instead of channelling their insanity into crime and violence, there wouldn’t be any stories.
Clearly, this shows that Amazi-Girl needs to further detach herself from reality and let her obsession with vengeance deepen. I’s the only (in)sane option.

On the one hand, yes, I agree in some sense. (This is a big reason why, say, the Flash’s current origin bugs me – by letting the death of Barry’s mother stand, they’re effectively endorsing Zoom’s position that one can’t be a hero without tragedy in your past, and that no one would take up the mask just because it’s the right and moral thing to do.)

On the other hand, there are other ways – arguably more effective ones, too – to fight crime than putting on a cape and going out into the night to personally beat the hell out of offenders one at a time. Assuming that “fighting crime” is your real goal, and not taking out your anger etc on those who “deserve” it…

Yeah, sure, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

Like using your Barry Allen example, the guy was in the police force long before he ever got any superpowers. But the conventions of the genre dictate that he sets himself apart from the police to become a “superhero”, even though he clearly believes in that institution and could totally be doing his superhero thang alongside the police and occasionally firefighters.

That doesn’t seem to be tied to his tragic backstory in any way. It just happens because that’s how it goes. If anything even with the tragedy in his life I don’t think I’ve ever seen a rendition of Barry Allen who was notably unstable. Just a guy with a sad story or two to his name like anybody else. I wouldn’t call myself the expert on Barry Allen but it doesn’t seem to be the norm for him to have Batman’s difficulty forming meaningful human relationships for example. He’s generally a pretty happy guy and not in a “I smile to hide my pain” kind of way. He’s got a pretty civil situation worked out with his rogues and doesn’t seem to devote an excessive amount of time towards quelling his murderous compulsions every time he lays his hand one them. I’m sure he’s got his issues, I’d be surprised if he had more than any random civilian you’d pull off the street.

I’d point to him as a fine example of a mentally and emotionally healthy individual who still took up the fight against crime.

It can be informed by your experiences. There’s no reason for example that just because Amber learned to be functional the subjects of abuse, bullying, and violence would suddenly be insignificant to her. It’s not outlandish to fight against something after you’ve personally experienced it. That doesn’t make you insane.

OK back when I was reading comics as a kid, Barry Allen was this guy working in a lab that got splashed by a random mix of exotic chemicals just as he was struck by lightning giving him super speed, which kinda forced him into the superhero business. Also he had to figure out work that he could get paid for by piecework so that he could get a day’s pay in a few minutes by working at super speed, then run off to do superhero “stuff” then be back at work in time to turn in his work and get paid (or at least counted for the day so that he would eventually get paid on payday). That part was almost never brought up in the comics… in fact I only recall seeing Barry at “work” once in the about 5 years I read the comic.

Also I was hit with a truck so I could have a few files that got corrupted and overwritten on the old meatdrive (brain).

I cant tell which is funnier:

1-A motorcyclist with a passenger pulling a chick on a skateboard who is being hugged by a girl on rollerskates. They form a strange chain that is only broken when the motorcyclist makes a turn and slingshots 3 girls into Danny. He awkwardly admits to making out with his pet dog and then quietly friendzones himself out of the state.

2-A motorcyclist arriving at a destination. 15 minutes later the roller-skate girl appears. 5 minute after that the skateboarder appears. 25 minutes after that the girl who had to walk finally crawls into the parking lot.

Sal’s one of this comic’s protagonists. She’s not the primary protagonist, but she’s just as central to the main plot as Danny, Joe, Sarah, Ruth or Ethan. She may not have received the attention that Joyce, Dorothy, Walky, Amber or Billie have received, but Sal has a story arc. Compare Sal with Mike, Dina or Sierra; they are supporting characters, and that’s Marcie’s role in the story.

Sal is secondary at best, she intersects with pretty much all of DoA’s various groupings but she’s not one of the A-listers. Think about it, pretty much any story involving Sal focusses on someone else primarily, the only real plot she has of her own is her fucking Jason which is played largely for laughs.

The “misandry doesn’t exist” arguments seem to to arise from examining misandry as a structural issue in society. As in “we’re not in the habit of making social institutions that enact misandrist agendas on a national scale”.

But I’m not sure that misanthropy really exists as a structural issue in society either. I mean, even the institutions that harm most (all?) humans were designed by people who had some sense of what they wanted to gain from it, serving some small group of people at the expense of everybody, possibly themselves included.

I’m not prepared to say misanthropy doesn’t exist as an structural issue in society, but I’d be really interested in hearing the argument.

Misanthropy is never used in the same context as misandry, which is likened to misogyny and is often seen as equivalent to, and consequently, just as bad as misogyny.

Saying misandry doesn’t exist is like saying reverse racism doesn’t exist – even if there are rare, isolated cases of discrimination/prejudice against white people/men, they have no power behind them, and are not upheld by society.

begbert2’s comment below is completely disingenuous, because he is comparing insubstantial anomalies to an oppressed group of people, and it reeks of dismissing important issues unless due attention is given to men’s feelings.

But I guess it doesn’t matter, because no one will see this. Oh well.

I adore Sal but I wonder if she could really take on Amber ALONE? In the past Amber stabbed her in the hand in a terrified rage. She didn’t know what the hell was going on all she knew was that Ethan was in danger and something snapped and everything turned red. Now in the present (though still mentally unstable) she is very much aware of what’s happening around her and what she will do to anyone she thinks deserves it. I was actually pretty worried about how all this was going to go down. Not saying Sal can’t take her down. Sal was badass (and crazy) enough to knock over 2 convenience stores and was brave enough to stand up to Ruthless. So I’m sure she’s given out her fair share of beatings too. I wonder who’s the lucky one to come out of this?…Probably Malaya..

Sal had quite a storyline in the other universe that shall not be named. Here in DoA, not so as much. But, I disagree she has none at all.

She rebelled against parents that clearly favored her brother over her for something she could not control – her appearance. She ran pretty much unsupervised because of it, and ended up robbing a store. She terrorized young Amber at the time without meaning to, didn’t really know she was there. She was so focused and so scared, not likely she had any idea who was there.

She was arrested. Her parents sent her away to a school to ‘reform’ her. When she got out, she goes to her brothers college, hoping to be accepted into the family again maybe. Her brother still treats her the way he did at home, he’s the alpha twin.

She even put on the stupid school uniform and changed her hairstyle back on Parents Weekend. Her mother acted like she wasn’t in the room, and her father remarked her hair looked better straight.

She traded herself for a passing grade in math with the Jason clone.

She left her parental units knowing things ain’t gonna change, and went back to her bike, her straight hair, and her sidekick, Marcie.

I’d say that’s a pretty good back story.

I like Sierra and love/hate Malaya. But, all I know of Sierra is that she doesn’t like shoes, and is very laid back. And Malaya, what’s her story here, I know it in the ‘other universe’, but all I really know of her here is that she is mean as cat shit. And stubborn as a mule.

Amber has problems, everyone knows she does, and feels sorry for her when she is hurting, and jeers her when she screws up.
Looks like Dorothy is not publishing the story, last she appeared anyway. And so what does Amber do in between?

She can’t go back to being Amber because Amber can’t live with the rage. She can’t be Amazi-Girl because she thinks she’s about to be revealed.
She can’t ‘prove’ herself now because Sal, rightly, won’t fight her.

Put a person into a situation with no resolve, and they either kill themselves or go crazy. And she’s half way to crazy now.

Or… you know, just move past it. Most adults live with unresolved situations in their life. For example some relative that they loathe but talking about the issues just devolves into fighting so you put on your showman’s smile every time they’re over and pretend like you’re not still harboring grudges for an entire lifetime’s worth of offenses. That’s something a mentally and emotionally healthy adult can do, because not every interpersonal conflict ends with a satisfactory apology or pistols at sunset.

Of course, Amber’s not that. She seems to experience some sort of trigger or flashback whenever she sees Sal in the halls, putting her into a state of panic.

I don’t personally know what it is that people do when they have those types of triggers in their lives, but that’s a thing people live with. There are people who break down every time a car burns rubber or a passerby casually mentions rape, and they lead functional lives without having to be locked away in the psych ward or committing suicide. There exists a method of working with this.

Problem here is that Amber’s got a pretty good case of dissociative disorder going on. It IS her coping strategy, and it’s not a good one (it never is).

Like I said above, a hit to the solar plexus like A-G took yesterday can cause the diaphragm to spasm and make breathing difficult. It’s really hard to talk, give chase, or, especially, fight, when you can’t get enough air. Hand-to-hand combat is an insanely high-intensity aerobic workout.

That’ll go away soon enough, though. As hits that can stop A-G from continuing the fight or immediately pursuing, but won’t disable her long-term or force her to seek medical attention go, it’s a pretty good one.

Might have to do something with what I wished I was able to do to some of my bullies from back in highschool, sometimes is just hard to let those thoughts go, I’m sure they wouldn’t try that now, but still, I mean getting smeared with cow shit and being made fun of for having an accent is not easy to forget, or in Amber’s case, being threated with a knife..

Batman doesn’t usually track you down years after you performed the crime just to beat you up again.

The wonderful, tolerant, understanding fanbase shows its best again. If someone misunderstands something, or just simply has the wrong idea the majority of the responses is in a condescending, superior, judgemental, arrogant tone. Good job people. Just because someone thought Marcie was deaf doesn’t mean you instantly have to attack them with an absolutely repulsive style and pointing out they are terrible people for assuming something. This is my biggest problem with the fanbase, that is why I avoid reading comments and try to stay away from them on tumblr. If someone _assumes_ something that usually tends to be the common explanation to a certain thing then some fans just demonize that person and try to point out what a narrowminded shitty person they are. That is just really disgusting.

Something kinda weird and awesome occurred to me, yesterday. Malaya seems a hateful, violent person, but then, so is Mike, and everybody likes him. Well, for various definitions of ‘like’.

So, Mike and Malaya? What kind of pairing would these two make? Friends? Enemies? Lovers? Master/student? Idol/Fan? Would their hate feed off of each other, burning out the sun and causing the premature heat death of the universe? I’d like to hear opinions.

Personally, I think Malaya could learn a lot from Mike. Malaya loses her temper a lot, striking out at random people, and triggering a lot of unintended consequences. Mike hates just as much, but has more control, striking at just the right place, to cause just the intended consequence. He’s like a hate ninja. I have to admire that.

    • Rybridge

Blast! You Beat me to it! That being said, Malaya could help him build physical power. While his punches are powerful enough the take down a Joe, Malaya is probably physically tougher due to her roller derby skills. Granted, she had a tough time against Amazi-Girl, but she is a much fiercer opponent than the Joe.

I have a hard time picturing Malaya looking up to Mike, so much as rising to anger about 10 times quicker than most of his targets (making her of less interest to him, I would think). Though, if she did feel any sense of kinship with him, it’d go out the window the moment the two go drinking together. The fallout of that would be interesting to see…

      The fanfic practically writes itself.

So what I’m really hoping is that Sal will at some point learn why Amazigirl is so against her and like Walky has to realize the hurt she unknowingly inflicted on someone else and tries to make good with Amber because that’s what people do when they’re trying to be better.

    So yeah, fingers crossed.

Yeah, honestly Sal has shown some great restraint throughout this whole ordeal. Amber came and tried to instigate a fight, and Sal pretty much walked away. Marcie is an excellent role model. If there was a character I came out of this arc wanting to see more of it’s her (followed closely by Sal).

On Amber: I’ve been spending this entire arc trying to figure out why exactly AmaziGirl is so darn gung ho about fighting Sal. At first I thought it was a manifestation of her belief that people don’t change, a mindset that superhero comics would tend to enfource, and as a result felt that it was her duty to fight the villains. But that argument was sort of obliterated by the first thing she says. She isn’t hear to do uphold the law or do the right thing, but doing that would be easier on her. She’s just there to fight, and for the longest time, I wasn’t sure why.

The last line of this comic does such a good job at expressing what Amber has been dealing with. She IS AmaziGirl, and AmaziGirl is her, and she’s there to right Amber’s wrong in cowardly attacking a detained person. She wants to prove to someone (idealist says herself, cynic says her father) that she was capable of dealing with that girl on fair terms.

I love the way it was handled, but as someone who likes the character of Amber, I hope she realizes just how destructive a path she’s been walking.

      May 19, 2014 at 7:54 pm | #

Amber’s point in this seems to be winning a “fair” fight against Sal, so she wouldn’t consider ambushing her.

My personal interpretation of this seems to be that Amber feels like stabbing Sal in the hand while she was defenseless made herself feel helpless against others. She thinks that she only managed to “win” over Sal, because she was held by the police. Together with the abuse by her father this could have left some serious self esteem issues. She feels like she only can surpass others when they’re held down. By trying to beat Sal in a fair fight she wants to disprove these feelings. This “loss” might thus lead to some even more serious self esteem issues, as instead of disproving her perceived inability this fight practically proved it to her.

And now I wonder whether I’m right, or just interpreted a whole lot of bullshit into all these comics.

        KrazyTom
        May 20, 2014 at 4:21 pm | #

Ok, my apologies, let me rephrase. If Amber wanted a fair fight with Sal to help resolve her past, why did she wait till Sal was with her allies? A 4 on 1 fight is not what I would call fair. She should have followed Sal along and then challenged her while she was alone. If as you say she doesn’t need to ambush she could just call out to Sal and throw down the gauntlet. That way it would be a clear cut equal fight between the two. It just seems strategically foolish to challenge Sal while she has friends who would fight alongside her.
