I had a guy I used to work with try to convince me of that. It backfired on him. Later on, a girl drove up through the drive thru with her dad in the other seat, he tried to get me to get her number, I said NO! So he did it instead. The dad looked like he was ready to fly out of his seat and pummel him. I was TICKED at him needless to say! I’m just a normal Christian who would like to get to know someone first as a friend basis before going all hey go out with me.
Joe, Joe, Joe…Joyce isn’t a 4 D: And that’s a lot of breaking in to do. Good luck getting her to realize it’s NOT a sin to do more than cuddle before the ring’s on her finger.
She is a 10 but has a -6 ‘virgin christian prude’ personality modifier
Or thats what I got from “I’m going to upgrade her from a 4 to a 10” via joe-ing her. Maybe joe All Night Long
…Aaaaaaaaaaand now my brain is full of images of Joyce warding off Joe’s malevolently glowing penis with a crucifix. Why can’t I ever go one day without conjuring up an icon of absolute insanity?
I really like this one, for some reason. Maybe it’s because panel two finally gets Danny back around to what he’s best at, which is moralizing at people. Bonus points for doing it at Joe, who we all know couldn’t care less.
It raises an interesting question, though, which is why exactly Danny and Joe are best friends. I can’t imagine this is the first time any version of the two had this sort of conversation, and while I can see Danny being patient with Joe’s behavior it’s harder to see Joe not just getting pissed at Danny after a while and ditching him.
On a similar note, I went back and reread my Roomies! volume 1, and now the moping around doesn’t seem as out-of-character as it first appeared. Which leaves us with his completely idiotic behavior back in October as my only real gripe, though given how long he stays attached to Sal after the break-up it does make a degree of sense. I guess I never thought he was that stupid/oblivious about it, though it is an AU so the point’s moot anyway.
I suspect Willis just needed to settle back into a groove, as far as the more “classic” characters were concerned.
I do believe that the question of why those two are best friends has been raised before in Roomies, but then again different people aren’t exactly allergic to each other.
One could also think that Joe is everything (or at least just the part that he’s more socially adept than Danny… If you consider being ‘Joe’ socially adept, that is) Danny wishes to be, but instead of being more like him, he lectures Joe. Because that’s what Danny does. (He’s also aware that it’s not very nice behavior)
Just for the record, I like Danny.
And of course, there’s also the fact that Joe doesn’t only think of banging girls 24/7, he also has his nerdy side. Which brings me another question, has he already decided to major in engineering or will he still have this breakthrough?
Yes, the question was raised in Roomies! Redux, and the conclusion they came to was that they have the same taste in movies.
Me and my best friend are as different as night and day as far as basic personality, so I know firsthand that thinking like each other isn’t a prerequisite for being buddies. I just think it’s odd Joe never got sick of Danny, who probably gives him shit all the time about morals and consequences.
I like Danny too. I voted for him on the poll and was quite sad to see that only Sarah was below him. (But not like that, due to yesterday’s strip.)
Joe’s probably already majoring in engineering, as Willis said he didn’t want to rehash old plotlines so he’s probably come to terms with his nerdiness.
Old Joe pretty much was random, as far as I could tell, and all about what was easy– hooking up with Sarah made sense for him at the time. It wasn’t until his later involvement with Joyce that he started to show a bit more nuance.
New Joe shows an admirable charm and tactical mind, even if it is given to understatement (“kind of sexually timid?” Yes, like a monk).
It’s kind of beautiful how Joe can be so much smarter than his previous incarnation at this stage of his life, and still walk right into the path of that GIANT TRUCK FULL OF HAMMERS.
I didn’t see Joe as random at all. It wasn’t until after the life-changing event of SEMME that he pondered anything other than ethical hedonism. Joyce was initially the only one who he recognized and was friendly after he went through the traumatic experience of becoming dead to the world. It felt right that he might become interested in her.
Actually, after rereading the comic, I think Joe’s aiming more of a complete makeover, wardrobe and personality, turning her into the Anti-Joyce, and hoping to Joe her along the way.
His shirt has more than one yellow stripe (it can be clearly seen a couple of strips ago). And even if it did have just the one yellow stripe, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s related to Semme. Semme probably doesn’t even exist in this reality.
Just when I think Joe can’t seem any more sleazy, he proves me wrong. And even if he did seem to have some sort of plan to his madness… He honestly comes off as the sort of person who will one day be that creepy guy in a bar with the open shirt and chest hair, trying to pic up girls half his age.
And Danny… is it me or does he not EVER hear when other people are speaking to him. I mean, at what point did Joe say anything about “dating” Sarah. He only asked if Danny was going to “score”. Seems to me that Joe’s made it clear quite often that he’s not trying to help Danny into a new relationship, he’s just trying to get him laid.
Danny doesn’t seem to realize that sex and dating are not always the same thing. One would think after being best friends with Joe, he’d understand that.
I think Danny emphatically doesn’t decouple sex and dating precisely because Joe DOES. He doesn’t have to mention this and jumps to the end of the argument because they’ve had this argument before.
1) Apparently.
2) I don’t know.
3) Joe is a player. He’s been around pheremones long enough to be able to read them like a book. Seriously, Joe’s been around the “equipment” so long he’s almost got an honorary gynecologist’s degree.
Joe, I knew you were a cad, but your terminology makes you the last person I’d ever sleep with. Ever. Don’t refer to a human being needing to be “broken in” with regards to sex ever again, please.
Either Joyce is gonna kick Joe so hard he’ll never be able to bang chicks, or this is gonna end up being a repeat of the “Venereal Disease” scene from Roomies!. I’m hoping it’s the latter.

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908.
"You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action

Oh. Joe.

Didn’t Fans! just do this one…? XD
To quote Questionable Content: DOOOOUUCHE
And background Joyce looks so happy.
lol@Joe’s power to upgrade a girl from a 4 to a 10. Never doubt.
By “broken in” he means
lol, forgot HTML was on. HE MEANS *expletive deleted*
The expletive you’re looking for is “Joe”
he’s going to attempt to joe her all night long.
….wonder if it’ll actually happen.
Nah, Joe is going to be Joyce’d.
What that actually entails… Well!
Oh Joe someone is going to get broken but it won’t be Joyce
Joe wants to Joe her all night long.
I love how Joe is completely oblivious to the epic disaster that is going to befall him.
joe is gonna be mind joed all night long
Joe, Joe, Joe…Joyce isn’t a 4 D: And that’s a lot of breaking in to do. Good luck getting her to realize it’s NOT a sin to do more than cuddle before the ring’s on her finger.
Oh, Joe. Good luck! (And what does he base his criteria on, to rate her a four? I’m going to guess it doesn’t have much to do with boobs…)
And Danny, stop going into hunchback position! Tsk.
Maybe clothing? Attitude? … Religion?
Maybe…
She is a 10 but has a -6 ‘virgin christian prude’ personality modifier
Or thats what I got from “I’m going to upgrade her from a 4 to a 10” via joe-ing her. Maybe joe All Night Long
Honestly…. you know what would be the even BIGGER twist?
If Joe actually pulls it off.
I for one look forward to it. Joyce hooking up with Joe and becoming a nympho would be a pretty hilarious twist imo.
i want this to happen.
So do I. And it’s not impossible. Joe has powers.
Sinister, dark powers.
…Aaaaaaaaaaand now my brain is full of images of Joyce warding off Joe’s malevolently glowing penis with a crucifix. Why can’t I ever go one day without conjuring up an icon of absolute insanity?
eeenngh…minus ten points for douchery, Joe
He still had points LEFT to lose?
There’s always points to lose, because there’s always something worse than you can imagine. Just start using negatives.
Soon: The One Where Joyce activates her Magic Ninja Monogamy Skillz!!
Ooh! I want! Where can I get some too!?
Man, Joe is one of my favorite peeps in the strip, but is the exact kind of person I despise & actively crusade against in real life.
Also I love Joyce so he better watch the eff out.
or I will…uh…become animated & fight him?
Off topic but when I first saw your icon, though sleepy-having-just-woken-up-eyes, my brain interpreted it as a Schnauzer!Batman.
Can’t unsee Schnauzer Batman.
More like Bat-Cthulu.

Big reply is big, sorry -_-
You know this becomes hilarious when you realized that both of you got the professor guy as a gravatar.

And it’s fine, my OP was quite long too.

Joyce was initially the only one who he recognized and was friendly after he went through the traumatic experience of becoming dead to the world. It felt right that he might become interested in her.
Oh! And by the way, how LONG was that thing?
Joe needs to finish his statement. “…year old.”
Actually, after rereading the comic, I think Joe’s aiming more of a complete makeover, wardrobe and personality, turning her into the Anti-Joyce, and hoping to Joe her along the way.
Noooooooo Don’t fall for it Joyce! Stay good! Stay good!
The Ruth gravatar and the fact that “Stay good” is a phrase I associate with Kiki from Sluggy Freelance have made your comment seem very weird.
So there’s a method to his Joeness?
Is Joe wearing a SEMME shirt?
His shirt has more than one yellow stripe (it can be clearly seen a couple of strips ago). And even if it did have just the one yellow stripe, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s related to Semme. Semme probably doesn’t even exist in this reality.
Those Semme shirts are popping up very randomly lately….
Willis likes the yellow stripe and just puts it in scenes without thinking after doing Roomies/Its Walky! for so long?
Just when I think Joe can’t seem any more sleazy, he proves me wrong. And even if he did seem to have some sort of plan to his madness… He honestly comes off as the sort of person who will one day be that creepy guy in a bar with the open shirt and chest hair, trying to pic up girls half his age.

Joe’s left eyebrow was raised so high, it got consumed by the realm of his hair!
Begone evil one!, you will never make sweet Joyce one of your people, you can just give up already…although I would like to see 10rank Joyce…
Your avatar makes this comment especially amusing.
Also, at least in the Walkyverse, Joyce canonically had a sexy dark side called Anti-Joyce. All Joe has to do is insert the key…
…The key is his penis.
I dunno, “Captain Key” just doesn’t have the same effect.
I dunno, I reckon the effect would be pretty special…
Well, Joe does have a point about Joyce needing something adjusted. It’s just not the something he’s got in mind.
It’s either going to be a long semester or Joe is not long for it.
Joe’s eyebrow in panel four reminds me startlingly of Hobbes.
GAH!
…Why’d you have to do that?
I foresee Joe coming acroppa of Amazi-girl at some point in the future. Probably preceded by him upsetting Joyce with all of his talk of Joeing her.
NEFARIOUS!
Joe is the man
Okay, 1) Sarah has had sex before? 2) with whom? 3) how does Joe know? Why is no one else asking this?
1) Apparently.
2) I don’t know.
3) Joe is a player. He’s been around pheremones long enough to be able to read them like a book. Seriously, Joe’s been around the “equipment” so long he’s almost got an honorary gynecologist’s degree.
Obviously, this won’t end well for all parties.
Joe, I knew you were a cad, but your terminology makes you the last person I’d ever sleep with. Ever. Don’t refer to a human being needing to be “broken in” with regards to sex ever again, please.
DoA!Joe is a creep. At least Roomies/Walky! Joe seemed to target women who wanted it and understood and was okay with what he was offering.
Either Joyce is gonna kick Joe so hard he’ll never be able to bang chicks, or this is gonna end up being a repeat of the “Venereal Disease” scene from Roomies!. I’m hoping it’s the latter.
Joe is the type of guy that makes me not like guys lol.
Putting in comment #70 just to ruin it for Joe.
Im late to the party but this Dan guy is brilliant
