Oh god, this. So much this. I’ve actually found out after I became an adult that it could be calming, and even enjoyable, to have physical contact with someone, such as holding hands or hugging. That was huge, and a big surprise to me. Turns out when I’m not considered a monster or abnormal for not wanting to be touched at any time my family wants to, including after every quarrel and disagreement we ever had, and I could touch other people on my own terms, it was actually enjoyable! I never knew!
Once, my grandmother was enormously offended, and refused to talk to me until the next time we met, because I asked her not to touch my shoulder from behind without warning me first or asking if it was okay.
Some people do not like to be touched, or do not want to be touched at specific times or when in specific moods, or need to have a say in whether the touching should be initiated before it already has been. Before I was an adult, I met no one who had any understanding for or sympathy with this.
I had a great grandmother who was in one of those Death’s waiting room type nursing homes, well anyway she did not believe that I was me and insisted that I was someone else entirely, she continued to assume this of me until my mother told me to give her a hug, well I gave her one of my awkward pseudo-hugs and suddenly she realised that I really was her great-grandchild.

No. Walky and Sal are siblings (twins,) although they have very, very different life stories. Billie is Walky’s closest frenemy from childhood. She’s so alienated from her family that she almost thinks of Walky and Sal’s parents as her own parents. Walky (and, I assume Sal) think of Billie as a sibling to the extent that when somebody suggested they were lovers, they both reacted as if that were a suggestion of incest.
To add to this, Linda Walkerton and her husband also considers Billie to be a daughter, and according to Sal they like Billie more than Sal.
Though while Walky reacts to the suggestion of being sexually involved with Billie as he would to being sexually involved with Sal, Billie seems to be somewhat sexually attracted to Sal.
Also, at least her dad is pretty neglectful of her (and we don’t know if her mom’s in the picture at all), hence why she didn’t have family at Fall Freshman Family Weekend and didn’t expect them.

Oh god, this. So much this. I’ve actually found out after I became an adult that it could be calming, and even enjoyable, to have physical contact with someone, such as holding hands or hugging. That was huge, and a big surprise to me. Turns out when I’m not considered a monster or abnormal for not wanting to be touched at any time my family wants to, including after every quarrel and disagreement we ever had, and I could touch other people on my own terms, it was actually enjoyable! I never knew!
Once, my grandmother was enormously offended, and refused to talk to me until the next time we met, because I asked her not to touch my shoulder from behind without warning me first or asking if it was okay.
Some people do not like to be touched, or do not want to be touched at specific times or when in specific moods, or need to have a say in whether the touching should be initiated before it already has been. Before I was an adult, I met no one who had any understanding for or sympathy with this.
I had a great grandmother who was in one of those Death’s waiting room type nursing homes, well anyway she did not believe that I was me and insisted that I was someone else entirely, she continued to assume this of me until my mother told me to give her a hug, well I gave her one of my awkward pseudo-hugs and suddenly she realised that I really was her great-grandchild.
It sounds like we both share Susan’s uneasiness with touching/hugging/kissing.
I am a hugger and am generally okay with light physical contact as long as I have notice. However, I do not like being touched while I am eating, and it took longer than you might expect to set that precedent with my mother.

It’s more likely that Walky and Billie were just friends independently, but it’d be kinda touching if he was looking for Billie because he was really looking for a certain sisterly relationship.

Considering Mr. and Mrs. Walkerton are half-black and white, respectively, I’d say it’s a pretty far cry.
That would mean Walky’s father had an affair with Billie’s mother which is kind of plausible at least from Billy’s mother side. On the other hand since Walky’s father is black wouldn’t Billie be much more darker skinned?

Walky, this is nice and all, but you should also probably say you want to be better to your actual sister. Then again, it’s possible Sal can take care of herself.
I agree, but I think the subtext is that he also wants to be a good sister to his actual sister as well. But he decided to smile awkwardly and use subtext rather than using words as neither of them are good at feelings, as indicated in the last panel.

No. Walky and Sal are siblings (twins,) although they have very, very different life stories. Billie is Walky’s closest frenemy from childhood. She’s so alienated from her family that she almost thinks of Walky and Sal’s parents as her own parents. Walky (and, I assume Sal) think of Billie as a sibling to the extent that when somebody suggested they were lovers, they both reacted as if that were a suggestion of incest.
To add to this, Linda Walkerton and her husband also considers Billie to be a daughter, and according to Sal they like Billie more than Sal.
Though while Walky reacts to the suggestion of being sexually involved with Billie as he would to being sexually involved with Sal, Billie seems to be somewhat sexually attracted to Sal.
Billie’s just…confused. Not necessarily about her sexuality, but about…everything.
I mean, seriously, Ruth? Ruth is my favorite character, bar none, but I wouldn’t have a relationship with her for anything.
Billie’s an “adopted sibling” in the sense she and Walky have been friends forever and she used to spend all her time at his house.
Also, at least her dad is pretty neglectful of her (and we don’t know if her mom’s in the picture at all), hence why she didn’t have family at Fall Freshman Family Weekend and didn’t expect them.
