It occurs to me, though, that a good sense of the difference between confidence and bragging is in how much of the TAUGHT material you demonstrate, vs. how much you ALREADY KNEW.
For instance, I have a buddy who drew comics to illustrate his homework for a foreign language class. The teacher couldn’t give him bonus points, because that wasn’t part of the lesson plan.
Similarly, Amber is (unintentionally) making it harder for Alex, job or no. Amber turning in her assignment separate from everyone else means he has to keep track of it independently, and “I could do that in five minutes” is a universal dismissal of difficulty.
This isn’t to point fingers and who is “right” and “wrong”–just to point out that Hell is other people, so fuck socializing.
Yeah — the rule seems to be that if you’re female, you’re not allowed to accept a compliment directly given to you; and god forbid you volunteer a thing about yourself that you’re good at, even if it’s relevant to the situation.
It’s worth noting that, between the two universes, Danny has had Dorothy, Amber, Ethan, and Sal interested in him physically or romantically, if not more.
He’s not as much of a slouch, physically, as we might think he is by his self-deprecation.
Danny is merely self-deprecational to an unhealthy degree- I know that feeling myself, actually. I constantly insult aspects of myself that are perfectly fine, and therefore my companions seem to get some impression it’s true, despite the obvious joking.
At my worst, I mostly just come across as a bloodthirsty nutter with an overinflated ego, like some kind of real-life munchkin.
It’s usually funny, until I glance at the wall clock and some poor girl thinks I’m glaring at her with a nonverbal promise to murder her.
I would posit – with the premise that I am perhaps extremely wrong – that many writers picture or somehow, at least put a bit of their own personalities into anything they do. As I do not know the writer/drawer of this in real life, and as such, I can only suppose, but.. I picture Danny as the superimposed version of Willis, were he in any of these situations. Perhaps he has another, perhaps none are correct, and all are simply various reflections of various traits of his personality (which, upon retrospect, seems more correct). But.. Danny is commonly the one who fucks things up, and seems powerless to correct them and, again, mentioning the “I might be wrong” thing – but with how many things are fucked up in this universe, especially amongst the individuals, I’m thinking perhaps it is a little of both – Danny fucks things up the most, but everyone else fucks things up in their own way.. this seems to be a comic based mostly on regrets. Now, mind you, I have been following this comic for a while now, yet only recently started posting semi-regularly – as I said earlier, I could be completely wrong. …holy shit am I Willis too? GAHHHHH!

Amber keeps impressing me with how self aware she is. Now knowing your issues and managing to sort them out are admittedly different things…
And Danny… you’re adorable and so on, but that “what you see in a guy like me” line is just one tiny step from a passive-aggressive demand for attention. Watch yourself buddy.
Also, I’m still grumpy about what a lousy teacher Alex is.
‘I don’t know why you bother with a guy like me’ is often actually a sign of low self-esteem and is an attack towards yourself – it isn’t passive-aggressive towards other people because it isn’t hostile in intent – it is a sign that they are feeling insecure with themselves, and that they can’t see what is attractive about themselves.
That’s certainly true, but so is what I said. It’s close to a passive-aggressive bid for attention fueled by low self esteem. Note how that comment changed the topic of discussion from Amber to Danny.
Not that Amber ever uses shady tactics on Danny to get attention…
I think Alex’s anger is not directed at Amber. It’s not her fault that neither of them get to skip this course. She’s just making his job harder, reminding him of what he could be doing instead.
If a bright, enthusiastic student who is ahead of the course makes the teacher’s job harder they are missing part of their job description. There will always be a student like that, part of the teacher’s job is learning how to challenge them, just as part of the job is to learn how to support those who are behind…
OK, OK, I will not rant more about that. For more comments, see yesterday.
HTML5? If you mean window.print, no, it has been in the DOM since “level 0” i.e. since Netscape first created Javascript. And as Dirk says, it brings up a print dialog, and whatever Amber did didn’t do that.
Is it possible to send anything through HTML? Maybe the printing command itself is routed through another machine with a specially-designed print function.
Yeah, hair needs to be a little* longer to catch my eye unless it’s attached to a particularly cute gal. Fortunately, they’re not hard to find.

I’ll see your Doogie Howser and raise you Full House, which I instantly recognised without realizing it when some asshole put it in a shitty mix and a “friend” played it after cutting off my playlist of REAL music [me: “Why am I suddenly thinking of Full House?”]
luckily, the mix repeated only a couple of stanzas, so if I genuinely try to remember the theme, it gets overwritten by Family Matters
Ugh, panel 2 right in the personal insecurities
(I systemically dismantled my self-esteem after concluding self-confidence was the equivalent of bragging)
When all else fails, one can just go the Mike route for a while and embrace being an asshole. After that perspective, a little bragging doesn’t seem so bad.
I have a dumb superstition that whenever I admit to myself that I’m good at something, that’ll cause my skill at it to decay. So yeah, I’m in the same boat :/

If I had to guess panel 4 feels like the autobiographical one. Also Amber you should use Danny’s ability to not lie to ask him questions, like about how he feels about Ethan. *WINK* *WINK*
these two are adorable. after all the angst and trouble they’ve been through in the last few arcs its nice to see them happy and getting along better then ever.
She has a bad teacher. A professor who quashes a students enthusiasm because it hurts their (the teacher’s) ego is a bad teacher, and should not be in the business.
I’m going to assume panel 3 is the autobiographical one. I’m pretty sure Willis use to put on a mask and go out crime fighting as Amazi-Geek. This is my head canon anyway.
I love this strip, especially the third panel – whether she knows it or not, Amber is essentially overtly admitting she only feels confident as her alter ego.
Is it bad that I ship DannyxAmber and EthanxSomebodyElse? Ethanny is nice and all but it hasn’t been around long enough for me to tell if the ship is seaworthy. Damber’s cute! I don’t want Amber to have her heart broken!
yes, b/c teaching Baby’s First Computer Science to a room full of people at both ends of the “this is beneath me” and “help i’m so lost” spectrum is so fulfilling, he’s heartless to not consider the individual needs of all 100 students per class
I far prefer Danny/Amber to the other alt-universe relationships both characters are in. Does this make me a bad person for wanting two fictional families ended so these two can be together?
first two panels are how i feel about doing most things around people. i can’t mimic the way other people do them and always do them wrong… social anxiety is the worst.
I’m very much like Danny in the fourth panel, my wife even says something similar when i’m feeling down (except the hair, when it comes to the hair I’m more like Jason Statham)
like whenever i think i did a good job on something i cannot tell the difference between showing confidence and bragging which leads to people trying to knock me down a peg which is the opposite of what i need. I FEEL U GIRL.

The funny thing about the mullet is that I have never heard that hairstyle been called by that name before the ’00s.
Also, AFAIK the mullet is banned in Iran. Literally.
Of course, that also means it’s popular in Iran. North Korea didn’t have to single out the mullet as a hairstyle to ban.
That make sense because the term was supposedly coined by the Beastie Boys in the mid-90s.
“Who can remember the 80s has not lived in them …!” -Falco
Naahh, it’s “If you can remember the ’60s you weren’t living the ’60s” Some old fart. (Keith Richards?)
It occurs to me, though, that a good sense of the difference between confidence and bragging is in how much of the TAUGHT material you demonstrate, vs. how much you ALREADY KNEW.

This isn’t to point fingers and who is “right” and “wrong”–just to point out that Hell is other people, so fuck socializing.
It probably doesn’t help that you’re a girl, Amber. Girls have a harder line to walk in the bragging area.
Yeah — the rule seems to be that if you’re female, you’re not allowed to accept a compliment directly given to you; and god forbid you volunteer a thing about yourself that you’re good at, even if it’s relevant to the situation.
Yeah- Mean Girls nailed it, to be honest:

Panel 3 for sure. Who DOESN’T want to throw on a mask right now?
I was thinking five. If you like Danny’s hair, it’s factually true!
Based on Hijinks Ensue, I’d say two.
It’s panel three, because in real life, Willis secretly dresses up in a costume at night to fight crime as Amazi-Girl.
What!
CLEARLY, he’s Spider-Car
[apparently, Candlejack]
that’s my head canon!
It’s all of them.
I agree, it’s 2
It’s panel 1. Everyone loves a silly computer trick.
Danny- “I knew you were just after me for my body!”
If she was, then she needs new glasses.
Yup, yup, and yup over here, too.
At my worst, I mostly just come across as a bloodthirsty nutter with an overinflated ego, like some kind of real-life munchkin.
It’s usually funny, until I glance at the wall clock and some poor girl thinks I’m glaring at her with a nonverbal promise to murder her.
You only do that because you stole the technique from me. Stone cold low self esteem and self deprecatory remarks since 1967.
Okay, okay, 1976. It took a few years to develop.
If my clients knew how little I think of myself I’d never have another case.

You mean VERY right.
that hair sure does have some body
She wants his hair-care secrets.
Danny:” what am I just a piece of meat to you ?I’m not your Robin.”
One trope Danny never has to worry about is the So Beautiful It’s A Curse trope.
First Ethan, now Amber.
Is Danny’s hair magical?
There’s no such thing as magic.
No matter what effect gazing over Danny’s majestic hair has upon you.

But is Dan’s hair better than Sal’s?
Joyce doesn’t think so.

Sal certainly endeavours to keep her hair damn straight. ^_^
Danny endeavours to act damn straight, but he knows he wants some of that Ethan ass.

Tripping over the 10,000m hurdles.
Which panel is autobiographical?
Got to be the first one. The Decepticon Hijack’s printer alt-mode IS awesome, and more people need to be aware.
Thank you Willis, it’s nice to know that even with Shortpacked! going away, you will keep us up to speed on important issues like this.
Nah, it’s his hair. Maggie only married him because David’s hair is amazing.
Dan’s shampoo; cos he’s worth it.
i need his shampoo right now
Sort of how like Ethan needs Danny, really.
I like your name!
My guess is that Panel 3 is the autobiographical one. Willis secretly puts on a mask and fights crime to solve his issues.
His twitter feed just got more awesome
Nooooo… he puts on the mask to do this stuff and live a normal life. He takes it off to fight crime and and solve his issues.
Like the Kill Bill Superman speech. Inside, Willis is just a giant block of space cheese pretending to be a man.
What?
You had to be there.
Well, either that or read the archives.
It’s the 2nd one, right? Right right right? I mean unless you really like Danny’s hair.
so as soon as danny has the full picture he’s dan proof.
Danny wants to make a less than passive-aggressive demand for Ethan.
Thanks, Bagge. You absolutely encapsulated what I wanted to warn Danny about as well.

OK, OK, I will not rant more about that. For more comments, see yesterday.

isn’t there a HTML5 function that prints a file to the printer? Or am I mistaken?
Only through a prompt.
Only through a prompt.
HTML5? If you mean window.print, no, it has been in the DOM since “level 0” i.e. since Netscape first created Javascript. And as Dirk says, it brings up a print dialog, and whatever Amber did didn’t do that.
HTML doesn’t have functions, not even HTML5. You’re thinking of JavaScript.
Is it possible to send anything through HTML? Maybe the printing command itself is routed through another machine with a specially-designed print function.
Yes, that is possible.
Guess who likes Danny’s hair better
ETHAN
To you know who’s hair is better though… SAL !
Who can possibly resist Dan’s milk chocolaty follicles?
Joyce. And me.
I don’t exactly have to struggle to resist Danny’s silky charms.
Oh, struggling? I never knew that you were into what Ruth and Billie were. (ETHAN HAS TO STRUGGLE TO RESIST DANNY’S CHARMS. NOT THAT HE TRIES.)
Well I’m odder than the average commenter you know.
Which is saying something, around here.
Comerades-In-Odds!
Ruth and Billie are gonna have some real fun once they get their hands on the right stuff, I feel. That’s each other, in this case.
They’ll probably have even more after learning some of the games. “Your lead is kinda doin’ it for me” indeed XD
Yeah, hair needs to be a little* longer to catch my eye unless it’s attached to a particularly cute gal. Fortunately, they’re not hard to find.

Whenever they text each other I hear the music from Doogie Howser when he would type into his computer.
You just put that show’s theme song in my head, which had been mercifully free of it for the past 15 years.
My revenge will be protracted and messy, oh yes.
I’ll see your Doogie Howser and raise you Full House, which I instantly recognised without realizing it when some asshole put it in a shitty mix and a “friend” played it after cutting off my playlist of REAL music [me: “Why am I suddenly thinking of Full House?”]

Wait, is that better or worse?
Full House is about crackers, and brought about the Olson twins. Family Matters has Reginald Vel Johnson, who was in DIE HARD
Huh, I always thought Doogie Howser was some really old thing, like black and white TV old. The name sure sounds like it…
Nah, it’s where Dr. Horrible got his start.
It’s why Neil Patrick Harris was already famous enough to appear “as himself” in Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.
Really? I thought that was thanks to Starship Troopers.
(Actually, I recall a lot of jokes about “Doogie Howser, S.S.”)
I forgot he was even in that turkey.
I let my haters be my motivators
Glad to be of service.
HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO PICK THE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL PANEL?!? THERE ARE TOO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM, WILLIS!
The answer is ALL OF THEM!
I don’t recognize your gravvy today. Source?
It has been a while but it’s Asuka’s nice twin.
…huh. I guess I really should get around to watching Evangelion eventually.
Is she canon?
Nope she’s strictly fandom.
ALL OF THE PANELS.
ALL OF THEM.
Trick question; it’s actually the last panel in Monday’s comic that’s autobiographical
Mike does not approve of Willis’ trickery.
Ugh, panel 2 right in the personal insecurities

When all else fails, one can just go the Mike route for a while and embrace being an asshole. After that perspective, a little bragging doesn’t seem so bad.

You mean like Reggie’s?
So tempted to decry it as a terrible idea, yet I get this weird feeling in my pants when I think about it.
If Danny had a huge afro in his pants, it would make his Mr. Happy look a lot smaller.

I’m pretty sure it is the fourth panel that is autobiographical – because I think I remember a comment about something like that before.
Did this make anybody else tear up?
No? Just me? Okay then.
How do you tear up a webcomic? Did you just rip your monitor in half?
Sledgehammer.
Insufficient information to answer the alt-text. I have no idea how good a liar Maggie is.
Panel four certainly brings back memories of the Willis-proposes-to-Maggie strip in Shortpacked, though.
And panel 2 sounds rather credible.
So pick whichever one seems the most neurotic to you, I guess? Autobiography is in the eye of the beholder! How very postmodern.
Feel the same way. Panel two or panel four – you call it, although I lean more to panel two.
2!
Gee, I never would’a guessed!
If I had to guess panel 4 feels like the autobiographical one. Also Amber you should use Danny’s ability to not lie to ask him questions, like about how he feels about Ethan. *WINK* *WINK*
Hovertext: all of them.
Yup. Though were I he, I’d be rubbing my hands together and cackling at all the different guesses.
Willis confirmed for Tzeentch disciple?
I don’t care for that Broadway show so instead of that…
Sometimes I feel…
Like I owe it…
To Someone!
Hovertext: 3. You have a secret identity. Or at least a mask.
Anyway, I declare these two Ye Most Likeable Couple.
I, too have often wondered where is the border between self esteem and narcissism.
I have said it before but Danny is just adorable.
I’m going to guess panel 7.13942.
“guess which panel is autobiographical”
umm GOTTA be the one about liking Danny’s hair
Geeze, he sure Danned that up. (I changed it so that’s a good thing now)
Good!
Danny’s hair must be amazing because of his DANdruff then
REMOVE THE NEGATIVE SOCIAL STIGMA OF DANNING! #DanGate
Um actually, it’s about ethics in webcomics journalism.
The last two panels are cute in a way.
Oh, there once was a hero named Amber the Nerd…
I guess panel five.
these two are adorable. after all the angst and trouble they’ve been through in the last few arcs its nice to see them happy and getting along better then ever.
panel four!
She has a bad teacher. A professor who quashes a students enthusiasm because it hurts their (the teacher’s) ego is a bad teacher, and should not be in the business.
Well, the farther you get up in education, the need to care about students’ feelings decreases.
Yeeeeeeeaaaahhhh…
AIUI he’s a grad student who’s only teaching because he has to, not because he wants to.
This just in: David Willis likes Danny’s hair.
I’m going to assume panel 3 is the autobiographical one. I’m pretty sure Willis use to put on a mask and go out crime fighting as Amazi-Geek. This is my head canon anyway.
I’d go with panel 5, being the literal, non-jokey person I am. Or I could be picking that one because I once had hair like Danny, and I miss it
It’s panel 1. Willis gets really into his universes.
Some people just like to show off. Maybe it’s a way to beat insecurity?
I love this strip, especially the third panel – whether she knows it or not, Amber is essentially overtly admitting she only feels confident as her alter ego.
Does anyone else think these two are going to be running into ethan in the elevator soon?
Is it bad that I ship DannyxAmber and EthanxSomebodyElse? Ethanny is nice and all but it hasn’t been around long enough for me to tell if the ship is seaworthy. Damber’s cute! I don’t want Amber to have her heart broken!
As i am not commenting on disqus, i leave that here, regarding the hovertext of todays’ shortpacked:
It has been official for more than three years!
I think you’re cool, Amber.
Try to copy Dina.
alex is a salty old butthole. amber’s pretty cool imo
yes, b/c teaching Baby’s First Computer Science to a room full of people at both ends of the “this is beneath me” and “help i’m so lost” spectrum is so fulfilling, he’s heartless to not consider the individual needs of all 100 students per class
“I love you because I can read you like a book, meaning I never have to worry about possible betrayal or losing to you in high stakes poker.”
I far prefer Danny/Amber to the other alt-universe relationships both characters are in. Does this make me a bad person for wanting two fictional families ended so these two can be together?
Yes, but only because that would make Willis have to draw stuff he doesn’t want to do anymore…
Just eat this DoA cake and let everyone else have theirs. =9
TRAIN CANNONS ON THE SCALLYWAG, EthDan ARMADA!
first two panels are how i feel about doing most things around people.
i can’t mimic the way other people do them and always do them wrong… social anxiety is the worst.
poor amber
I’m very much like Danny in the fourth panel, my wife even says something similar when i’m feeling down (except the hair, when it comes to the hair I’m more like Jason Statham)
GOD i feel Amber so bad right now
like whenever i think i did a good job on something i cannot tell the difference between showing confidence and bragging which leads to people trying to knock me down a peg which is the opposite of what i need. I FEEL U GIRL.
I must say I’m intrigued by how Amber is managing to text Danny’s phone from her DS.
They could be emailing or something. She could even be texting him through her email. The 3DS has internet.
I think her phone is a slide-up phone, you know, those things that reveal a keboard?
some one’s gonna get their hands on one of these ds’
Panel 2: me appx. 28 times per week.
