But… I don’t know if I need a Slipshine, to be honest. Dina and Becky are cute together. If I get to see them interact like this, it’s nearly enough on its own.
Yeah, I can’t really see Becky getting to Slipshine level for a while. She still won’t swear and it hasn’t occurred to her to look up porn, which…um, yeah. The fundie is still pretty strong with this one. Premarital hanky panky’s gonna take some getting used to.
She’s at least outwardly very happy to buy a million tickets to heck with Dina, and I’ve known sexually active people who don’t swear. But yeah, snuggling is so new and exciting and wonderful, there’s no reason not to hang out in snuggle-land for a very long time!
You see, in college I used to brag about snuggling with two ladies, and my friends didn’t understand why this was brag-worthy, even though I pointed out that snuggling is way awesome! And there were two, woah!
Well, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a full-blown Slipshine comic…perhaps we could have a Slipshine of just Dina and Becky cuddling together and being all cutesy-wutesy for like a dozen or so uninterrupted pages.

Know what I really wish? That “Terra Nova” hadn’t gotten cancelled after one freakin’ season! Sure, it wasn’t particularly any more accurate regarding the dinosaurs it depicted than pretty much any other dinosaur-based work, but it was a great series, I loved it!
Also, the fact that Dina apparently finds the thought of Becky researching dinosaurs online to be rather a turn-on. WIIIIIN.
One of my greatest college achievements was getting snuggled by 3-4 girls at a part after a comedy show I performed in. It was one on the lap, and one on each arm, with a 4th girl cycling into the lap at one point. I was being smothered by ladies and it was fabulous.
Not to mention both are very new to this kinda relationship (Hell, Dina’s still mastering basic Human interaction), so going to Slipshine-type-action too soon could completely destroy the relationship…

So much this. And it’s such a sweet gesture that Becky probably doesn’t realize the full importance of. Dina’s encounters with most people on dinosaurs is to kind of write her off as obsessed and ignore her. Becky actually went to the trouble to follow-up on everything she was saying. She took Dina seriously and wanted to learn more about what she was interested in and talking about.
And not only that, but that was the thing that was most distracting about unfettered internet access. That instead of getting lost in any of the trillion of possible things to get lost in, Becky was most driven to look up the dino stuff she was talking about last night. That that really was the most pressing and distracting thought she had while juggling all the stuff Becky needs to survive.
It’s so naively sweet that it makes so much sense that Dina would be recharged by it.
Yeah, I initially misunderstood that, too. In retrospect, it seems really obvious that Dina was referring to her “social battery,” not the laptop battery. As someone who requires ample “recharge time” after social interactions, I should have picked up on that.
Same, including the “I really should have gotten it” part. I was really confused, since the laptop’s power level was a meaningless thing to mention unless it meant Becky was lying, but Becky certainly wasn’t reacting like she’d been caught in a lie.
Then I reread the strip and everything made sense.
I think it’s the fact that I have a low powered social battery that kept me from getting it at first (though I didn’t think it was the laptop battery…I thought she was talking about Becky’s awesomeness). I can’t think of any situation that could move me from ‘need recharge’ to ‘fully charged’…but I’ve always had friends who were interested in the same things as me, so I can’t really say how I would respond if someone went out of their way to learn about something I was into in order to connect with me.
I thought it meant the laptop battery was at 100% and that Dina caught on to Becky just looking up dinosaurs for two seconds and directing her to find it all disi genupus-style. Like, hey, yer fulla shit, you haven’t even looked at this for a few minutes even. But nope, glad to see it is less sly and circuitous than that.
I didn’t get it was referring to her social battery until I read this. I though it was just like, happiness level kinda thing. That make snore sense though! I hope Dina still takes a break though so she doesn’t get overwhelmed from too much social interaction and have a meltdown

I suspect that Becky might be better at accidentally girlfriending than intentionally girlfriending as without effort she can be vulnerable and intimate and sweet, but as we’ve seen with her persona of friendship, her intentional self plays too hard to bury and mask those as she doesn’t want to look like a “sad sack”. So I’m hoping that Becky keeps stumbling and bumbling for a while longer because her and Dina are so adorable as FUCK right now.

This. I would object to the necessity of taking someone else’s name, but Becky’s traditional background aside, she has good cause to just drop her family.
Yup. Most people who come from abusive families are only too happy to drop their names if there is an option, even if social expectations are to keep it (I’m thinking specifically of men marrying women who took their wife’s name because there relationship with their dads was pure poison).
I wonder how Joyce will react if she checks her browser history, and sees scientific articles about dinosaurs? Would we get another freaked out Joyce panel? I can imagine her horror at the thought that this research on dinosaurs might be the gateway to research on godless topics such as evolution. The horror!

Yes, so much. As a massive introvert, I so identify with panel 3 and Becky’s handling of that is so beautiful. It’s like, oh right, that’s a thing for people. I’m initially disappointed, but I want to make a show of how much I respect that boundary…
Actually, I squee for everything to do with Becky’s respect for Dina’s boundaries at every point. It’s so clear that Sarah’s retelling of Joyce’s tale and her guilt about the surprise kiss is really having Becky double check on everything and it’s so super adorable and wonderful, because she so badly wants to do this right more than she wants to get exactly what she wants. It’s just so beautifully respectful at every point.
And that just makes Panels 5-6 so much sweeter, because Dina was drained and out, but the raw sweetness of something Becky did by accident made her feel refreshed and capable of handling a little more social activity (albeit probably by her rules, so I’m going to guess quiet cuddling while Dina does something else or something).
I just… this comic is basically cuteness overload with all the good relationship practices in it.

YES! SSGSS aside, I am pretty much in love with Dragon Ball Super. I even tolerated episode 5. (I know how the animation industry works there, and I remember the Cell Saga episodes that were clearly drawn during Bring Your Seven Year Old to Work Day, so no skin off my back. It’s a kids’ show.)

Yup; Dina’s officially an introvert, all right. Introverts get drained by social interaction and recharge by being alone. Being around one or two people is typically doable, but a large group can really be exhausting.
Nah, I think it’s still an introvert thing. It was just a really sweet gesture. I’ve been drained sometimes and someone does something really sweet for me and its like a snooze alarm on my internal clock and can keep me for crashing into self-care for a little longer. Though that’s only about 50/50 for whether or not it works… and it really sucks when it doesn’t. Aww, that’s so unbelievably sweet and I’m nonetheless still too drained to accept it…

Yup, speaking from experience the right sort of interaction or stimulus can boost my energy level to full. It might not stay there as long as good and proper alone time but it’ll do in a pinch.
Depending on the University, she may not have had any private access to the internet. She probably wouldn’t have had an interest in dinosaurs, but not being able to do anything in private would have kept her from being free to use it in general.
Some places might also augment that with limited access.
I’ve got an acquaintance who goes to one– the access is not censored per se, but it is monitored in such a fashion that if someone looks up two people puttin’ their giblets together, that someone is in a load of doo-doo.
She didn’t have a cell phone or a computer. Only a landline.
It’s possible that the religious university’s library had internet, but it was probably heavily censored owing to the proclivities of the parents who send their kids there. But it definitely was the case that all studying and classwork that Becky was shown to be doing involved book work of some kind.
Multiple videos of it, as it happens. I didn’t think more than one video of it would exist, but, as I’ve seen with my own eyes, I’ve been proven wrong.

In every sense of the word… which makes me slightly worried that Dina is going to develop a savior complex about it or take it harshly if something bad does happen to Becky in the same way that she beat herself up about letting Amber’s dad into the room.(The hospital preview panels for next arc make me really nervous for a Toedad getting revenge against Dina storyline or a Becky getting hurt arc).
Man, it took me forever to get the joke. I thought Dina was talking about the power level of the laptop. Which would imply that Becky only pretended to have digged around for dinosaurs and in reality the laptop was barely on.
On an unrelated note: what kind of parental controls would lock out dinosaurs? Is that sort of a thing because they are not wearing feathers in most depictions? Shaved brontos and their horny tricerabottoms?
I’ve been reading DoA for years, this is the first time I’ve commented, just because as someone with some extent of high-functioning aspergers and no small degree of social anxiety, I COMPLETELY understand where Dina’s coming from in the second panel.
I’m in a wonderful relationship myself, and have friends I value greatly, but spending long stretches of time in a highly social context is exhausting on an emotional and mental level. As much as I enjoy my friends’ company, it would wear on me greatly to spend any longer than a weekend with them at once, and – depending on a series of factors as to ‘how often’ – I reasonably frequently just need some alone time. Reading, playing games, lying back and thinking, doing some creative work. Something quiet and some chance to regather my own energy.
I’m confused by this page. What is Dina’s point in the last panel? That the battery is still at 100%, so Becky must have lied about looking up dinosaurs? Or that there’s plenty of battery left for more research?
Totally unrelated to this strip but in TVtropes catalogue of Nice Guys (as in genuine nice dudes, not MRAs) Roomies!Danny is listed as, and I quote: “one of the best examples of this trope being played straight ever.”
Roomies-era Danny was way more than just a “pouty arsehole”, he was ridiculously stuck up, judgemental, moralizing, and totally blind to any of his own flaws before he accidentally got Ruth killed. Even though he eventually grew up and become a better person like he was in It’s Walky, the idea that he’s “one of the best examples” of a genuinely nice and friendly person is silly.

All joking aside, I hope this doesn’t become a problem. Dina is a textbook introvert, and Becky an extrovert. Becky seemed a bit taken aback by Dina’s needing alone time, but that’s exactly how it works with us quiet ones. Regardless of how much she might enjoy it, it IS very tiring to interact with people for an entire day.
Becky sounded surprised, but not upset. Intro/extro pairings can, in my experience, work quite well, if the two can figure out how to interact with each other. Dina seems interested in social growth (at her own pace), and Becky seems willing to give her space – that’s a good starting place.
Becky seemed taken aback, but accepting. She doesn’t understand yet, but she respects it.
And Dina may find that Becky is one of the few people that don’t exhaust her to interact with them. So far they haven’t spent much time with just the two of them.
This. I think it wasn’t something she thought to look out for as Becky isn’t an introvert, but overall Becky handles it very well and moves out of the disappointment into making it clear her full no-judgment acceptance really fast, which is very healthy.

So much cute on this page, but one thing is just so slightly heartbreaking and that’s Becky’s apology for drifting off job searching. She’s already begun internalizing the “need to stay on the ball 100% of the time narrative and feeling bad when she drifts off it. She’s been through so much of late and has never had full access to the internet before, but still feels she needs to apologize to her girlfriend for not being “productive” enough after its been what a weekend and a day?
It’s really sad, but everything else is so sweet it so makes up for it.

But… I don’t know if I need a Slipshine, to be honest. Dina and Becky are cute together. If I get to see them interact like this, it’s nearly enough on its own.

So much this. And it’s such a sweet gesture that Becky probably doesn’t realize the full importance of. Dina’s encounters with most people on dinosaurs is to kind of write her off as obsessed and ignore her. Becky actually went to the trouble to follow-up on everything she was saying. She took Dina seriously and wanted to learn more about what she was interested in and talking about.
And not only that, but that was the thing that was most distracting about unfettered internet access. That instead of getting lost in any of the trillion of possible things to get lost in, Becky was most driven to look up the dino stuff she was talking about last night. That that really was the most pressing and distracting thought she had while juggling all the stuff Becky needs to survive.
It’s so naively sweet that it makes so much sense that Dina would be recharged by it.

The first few moments after reading today’s strip, I thought Dina was referring to the laptop when she said “power level’s at 100%”.
Yeah, I initially misunderstood that, too. In retrospect, it seems really obvious that Dina was referring to her “social battery,” not the laptop battery. As someone who requires ample “recharge time” after social interactions, I should have picked up on that.
Same, including the “I really should have gotten it” part. I was really confused, since the laptop’s power level was a meaningless thing to mention unless it meant Becky was lying, but Becky certainly wasn’t reacting like she’d been caught in a lie.
Then I reread the strip and everything made sense.
I think it’s the fact that I have a low powered social battery that kept me from getting it at first (though I didn’t think it was the laptop battery…I thought she was talking about Becky’s awesomeness). I can’t think of any situation that could move me from ‘need recharge’ to ‘fully charged’…but I’ve always had friends who were interested in the same things as me, so I can’t really say how I would respond if someone went out of their way to learn about something I was into in order to connect with me.

Yes, so much. As a massive introvert, I so identify with panel 3 and Becky’s handling of that is so beautiful. It’s like, oh right, that’s a thing for people. I’m initially disappointed, but I want to make a show of how much I respect that boundary…
Actually, I squee for everything to do with Becky’s respect for Dina’s boundaries at every point. It’s so clear that Sarah’s retelling of Joyce’s tale and her guilt about the surprise kiss is really having Becky double check on everything and it’s so super adorable and wonderful, because she so badly wants to do this right more than she wants to get exactly what she wants. It’s just so beautifully respectful at every point.
And that just makes Panels 5-6 so much sweeter, because Dina was drained and out, but the raw sweetness of something Becky did by accident made her feel refreshed and capable of handling a little more social activity (albeit probably by her rules, so I’m going to guess quiet cuddling while Dina does something else or something).

Do religious universities normally have censored internet access?
Depending on the University, she may not have had any private access to the internet. She probably wouldn’t have had an interest in dinosaurs, but not being able to do anything in private would have kept her from being free to use it in general.
Some places might also augment that with limited access.
Possibly Becky’s computer did? Maybe Toedad owned it and censored it? Or the school Internet was limited like how China limits their Internet.
I’ve got an acquaintance who goes to one– the access is not censored per se, but it is monitored in such a fashion that if someone looks up two people puttin’ their giblets together, that someone is in a load of doo-doo.
She didn’t have a cell phone or a computer. Only a landline.
It’s possible that the religious university’s library had internet, but it was probably heavily censored owing to the proclivities of the parents who send their kids there. But it definitely was the case that all studying and classwork that Becky was shown to be doing involved book work of some kind.

Man, it took me forever to get the joke. I thought Dina was talking about the power level of the laptop. Which would imply that Becky only pretended to have digged around for dinosaurs and in reality the laptop was barely on.
On an unrelated note: what kind of parental controls would lock out dinosaurs? Is that sort of a thing because they are not wearing feathers in most depictions? Shaved brontos and their horny tricerabottoms?

I’ve been reading DoA for years, this is the first time I’ve commented, just because as someone with some extent of high-functioning aspergers and no small degree of social anxiety, I COMPLETELY understand where Dina’s coming from in the second panel.
I’m in a wonderful relationship myself, and have friends I value greatly, but spending long stretches of time in a highly social context is exhausting on an emotional and mental level. As much as I enjoy my friends’ company, it would wear on me greatly to spend any longer than a weekend with them at once, and – depending on a series of factors as to ‘how often’ – I reasonably frequently just need some alone time. Reading, playing games, lying back and thinking, doing some creative work. Something quiet and some chance to regather my own energy.
So how long till Becky finds the first Lesbian porno?

Roomies-era Danny was way more than just a “pouty arsehole”, he was ridiculously stuck up, judgemental, moralizing, and totally blind to any of his own flaws before he accidentally got Ruth killed. Even though he eventually grew up and become a better person like he was in It’s Walky, the idea that he’s “one of the best examples” of a genuinely nice and friendly person is silly.
Yeah but that was roomies. everyone was an asshole in that strip.

All joking aside, I hope this doesn’t become a problem. Dina is a textbook introvert, and Becky an extrovert. Becky seemed a bit taken aback by Dina’s needing alone time, but that’s exactly how it works with us quiet ones. Regardless of how much she might enjoy it, it IS very tiring to interact with people for an entire day.
Becky sounded surprised, but not upset. Intro/extro pairings can, in my experience, work quite well, if the two can figure out how to interact with each other. Dina seems interested in social growth (at her own pace), and Becky seems willing to give her space – that’s a good starting place.
Becky seemed taken aback, but accepting. She doesn’t understand yet, but she respects it.
And Dina may find that Becky is one of the few people that don’t exhaust her to interact with them. So far they haven’t spent much time with just the two of them.
Ah, but there are various ways to exhaust someone.
This. I think it wasn’t something she thought to look out for as Becky isn’t an introvert, but overall Becky handles it very well and moves out of the disappointment into making it clear her full no-judgment acceptance really fast, which is very healthy.

So much cute on this page, but one thing is just so slightly heartbreaking and that’s Becky’s apology for drifting off job searching. She’s already begun internalizing the “need to stay on the ball 100% of the time narrative and feeling bad when she drifts off it. She’s been through so much of late and has never had full access to the internet before, but still feels she needs to apologize to her girlfriend for not being “productive” enough after its been what a weekend and a day?
It’s really sad, but everything else is so sweet it so makes up for it.

Basically, Becky feeling like an outsider and being a tiny bit shy about her homeschooled status in the face of her smart girlfriend. She doesn’t know that most people view Dina’s dinosaur interest as childish in itself, and how much it means to Dina that someone takes it seriously.
