I’m surprised by the hostility. I think this was Billie honestly trying to give a genuine compliment. Kind of like when Jackie on That 70’s Show revealed that she’d “busted her ass for years to get into the group.”

Well, part of the thing there is that Twilight was actually written by a devout Christian/Catholic, and used the “being bitten” as a metaphor for sex. Or that is what I picked up from the media. It would be harder to argue devout Christian beliefs in oher RPG systems.

Then again, original WoD did claim that Lillith and Cain were the first vampires, based on Christian mythos, so…

I should stop claiming things I only know a fraction about.

I can honestly see Billie is at least trying to be nice. However, she seems to be fighting with herself about it. Her normal societal views would tell her that someone like Amazi-Girl is below her, and yet Amazi-Girl appears to be more active than Billie is, just saved her butt, and seems to enjoy it. It’s confusing her. Her lack of knowledge on nerdy stuff clearly shows here, but I do believe she’s TRYING to be nice. She just doesn’t know how.

    • begbert2
      begbert2
      March 15, 2011 at 10:46 am | #

And panel 5 is Amazi-Girl crushing her ego: “That thing about yourself that you value so much? I’m good enough to be it but think it’s worthless. Which means you are too.” You can see it in Billie’s expression/reaction.

    • Shift

I’m not sure she’s being nice so much as trying to figure out what Amazi-Girl’s deal is.

I mean, she doesn’t say thanks, or anything that can actually be conveyed as appreciative. She just makes a dismissive remark about being a hero in comparison of being cheerleader. Amazi-Girl shut her down by turning her statement around.

Amazi-Girl is a dark mysterious super-hero. She’s not supposed to be nice and let people get close to her. She has to be harsh to keep those she save at length so as to protect them from her enemies like Doctor Cyborg. 😛

Batman does the same thing. Only difference is, Bats has got Alfred inviting all the blond girls down to the cave.

I always found D20 system horribly limiting.
“you want to play outside of a box? I guess we can give you a bigger box! but not by much”
Compared to point buy systems like GURPS d20 as versatile as railroad’s offroad capabilities.

          • Thenodrin
            Thenodrin
            March 17, 2011 at 9:22 am | #

I guess it both depends on what you compare it to, and what you are looking for.

I find systems like GURPS to be too open to interpretation. The same action works differently under different game masters. Since I write an RPG campaign, it is important that the players get the same experience no matter who is running the event.

On the other hand, compared to AD&D 2.5 or D&D 4, D20 appears unlimited in its customizability. In D&D 4, if you accidentally make a strong wizard, or a dextrous paladin, or a wize rogue, you quickly run out of available feats to choose from. The only way to not be penalized down the road is to limit yourself to 3 to 5 different ways to build your character class, which means there are effectively about 40 different total character types. (I’ve actually had people argue that 40 is too much variety.) By contrast, I’ve yet to have or even hear of a character concept in a D20 game that the player had to say, “close enough.”

I knew plenty of cheer leaders who wore glasses. They wore contacts when practicing and at games.

Lies. If a cheerleader has contacts to begin with, why would she bother with glasses the rest of the time? 😉

That would be the best twist. Turns out Billie was actually a completely unremarkable nerd in high school and the whole cheerleader schtick is just an attempt to reinvent herself in College.

Walky knew her in high school, so he probably would have pointed out by now if she was lying.

Why would he care to point it out? Maybe he agreed with her to keep it secret.

What’s with Billie’s face in Panel 2? She looks around ninety, not nineteen, or however young these new-fangled college kids are. *waves walking stick*

Huh. I really, really like this Amazi-girl character, whoever she is. I guess I assumed that this universe’s Joe wasn’t old enough to have built Ultracar yet, I guess I was wrong.

Amazi-girl could have a completely different origin story in this universe, too. Perhaps consoled by comic books, Amazi-girl used her superhero persona as an escape from her geeky life and becomes the brave hero she wants to be.

Why do cheerleaders always think everyone else wants to be a cheerleader?
The only ones I know of did so under pressure from their overbearing parents, burned their uniforms as soon as they graduated and slipped the yearbook committee 50 bucks to “forget” to list their name as club members, “lose” any photos, etc.
