I suppose, but this is one of the few times I don’t blame Billie. Maybe she just needs a break from being a total bongo to everyone and getting her ass kicked.
Sarah really rubs me the wrong way on this. I don’t like drugs, but I’m not going to make other people feel bad about how they choose to live. I might give advice, but not sarcastic admonishment.
Fair enough, you can’t control how people live their lives and you shouldn’t. At the same time, Sarah seems to be at the wrong end of some judgement herself merely for trying to prevent her life from being ruined by someone else’s bad habits. Having been in a similar situation myself, I can hardly fault her for being a little snarky.
Which isn’t what Sarah’s doing, she’s openly mocking a lifestyle she doesn’t approve of and wouldn’t choose. If I made a point to mock someone’s lifestyle because it’s not what I would do, well, that’s the first step on the slippery slope to bastardom.
Amen, but I gotta say, I’ve been mocked in the same way for the lifestyle of little-to-no booze, and sometimes, (while i’m not saying this is a good thing) i’m tempted to lash back with some snark of my own
When I was at college, a total stranger came up to me while I was drinking a can of soda in a student bar, and asked if I had exams. When I said no, he began unasked-for amateur psychoanalysis, trying to find out why I didn’t drink alcohol.
Hey lets not forget the few weeks where Ruth was being a bongo with the whole Cheerleader uniform thing. Everyone found Ruth reprehensible then. Or at least the majority.
ohey… I forgot about that… But I have a… dislike of cheerleaders, so I’m still kinda on Ruth’s side through all that. Plus I have a thing for (physically) strong women who can kick an ass or two.
Well for starters, I never said her actions were right. I said I’m kinda on her side.
Having been on both ends I can’t hold a grudge against those who gave me my karmic comeuppance, look down on some dishing out something similar on another cheerleader, or really feel bad for a cheerleader who treats everyone around her like shit and then gets exactly what she deserves.
Would I do it myself? No. But I’m gonna laugh about it.
And I don’t mean “love” as in “I want to do horribly perverted thigns to her,” I mean, “I want to give her a high-five, and maybe some money, because college students are poor.”
I fully agree with you, grad school is the time for drunken idiocy. Everyone’s legal then, and it is more of a stress reliever than an everyday action.
I know that she wants to focus on her academics, which is totally understandable, but college is just as much about learning about social situations as it is learning academically.
Some of the best academic students I know from college can’t hold a decent job because they have HORRIBLE social skills, while those with decent to moderate grades but socialized a lot already have jobs where they’re working their way up and great families that love them.
I ended up going to med school so I haven’t done either yet, though.
Yeah, you totally learn the best social skills drunk. Down there at the kegger, that’s where she’s gonna learn to interact with an employer and coworkers.
I’m being incredibly sarcastic, but I don’t actually attend such functions or partake of the drink. Maybe it transfers more than appearances would indicate? All I know is that when my roommate comes home fall down drunk and tells stories of all the people he punched out, he doesn’t sound like he’s learning anything he’ll need in a professional social circle.
Seems like you could probably learn the necessary social skills just fine without associating with such people.
You seem to assume involvement of alcohol being equated to balls out drunk. This is a mistake, the same one Sarah’s made. You don’t need to be balls out drunk to socialize, I mean, most parties I was at, most people only had enough to grease the wheels, so to speak. Very rarely were there “ZOMG POLICE INTERVENTION.”
Honestly, I don’t get the whole “haha college kids irresponsible drinking” thing. There IS such a thing as moderation.
I’ve never heard of responsible drinking referred to as partying is all. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with a glass or two, or whatever you’re comfortable with. When people use the word party though generally they seem to be talking about something else entirely. At the very least, I personally haven’t heard it used to describe anything else within the current context (non event-based parties).
I’d think that socialization would just be “Getting together with some friends” or something along those lines. I hang out with friends all the time. Sometimes they drink, that’s cool. I don’t personally do that, but it’s mostly just because I’m a somewhat bland person that way. Raised mormon, never got around to trying the stuff. Not like I have a policy against it, just hasn’t happened. Any party I’ve heard about though doesn’t end in anything other than passing out from excess at some ungodly hour, hopefully having made it back to your own bed.
What you’re describing sounds like basically a social gathering where one could meet new people and crack open a cold one. That doesn’t sound bad at all. That actually sounds quite pleasant. Maybe one day I’ll encounter something like that.
Yeah, that’s basically what I’m describing. Social gathering, which also means a party. You’re thinking of the whole FRAT BOY ROOFIE PARTY YARRGGHH. I have to say that nearly none of the parties I’ve been to were like that, just a large amount of people mingling and meeting new people and stuff. The few times I HAVE ended up in one of those parties, I left in disgust, so I know where you’re coming from, at the least.
So the moral of the story is to not make comments on “partying” if you’ve never done anything of the sort? Makes sense to me. I’ve never been invited to a party with alcohol, much less gone to one.
I may not partake, but that doesn’t mean I don’t bear witness. As I’ve stated, the parties I’ve been in contact with have not been what he describes. To quote pulp fiction
Jules: You know the shows on TV?
Vincent: I don’t watch TV.
Jules: Yeah, but, you are aware that there’s an invention called television, and on this invention they show shows, right?
To profess complete ignorance on the topic simply because I don’t partake would just be ridiculous. I’ve never sky dived before either, and yet I’m aware of what the activity entails. If someone asked me if I felt it was necessary to sky dive in order to attain the skills needed to succeed in life, I feel I could give a reasonably informed answer. Namely, that plenty of people do not sky dive and get by just fine in life.
Similarly, I can name a great number of people within my own life who have never been large on the party scene, and yet still managed to somehow acquire the social skills required to hold respectable jobs with a pay that suits their needs and enviable hours and workloads, and even continue to work their way up the ladder through promotions. Librarians, professors, entrepreneurs and tradesmen. One does not find themselves socially bereft simply by not having frequented this single category of social function.
Gangler, my friends and I have parties all the time. We drink, and don’t get shitfaced. “Party” does not automatically mean “irresponsible boozing.”
If an alcoholic frat boy says “party,” yes, he probably means “crappy music and complete intoxication.” If a regular person says “party,” he probably means “pizza, a DVD, and some drinks with friends.”
Yes. We’ve established that such was my error. I still maintain that I’ve never hear it used in that sense before, but evidently such is a use of the word.
I’d be more inclined to call that hanging out or something to that effect, but it’s all good. I’ve learned from this and won’t make the same assumption next time it comes up.
Though, to clarify, we all think Billie’s talking about getting shitfaced here, right? That’s not an argument that’s happening, I think.
Except that between Billie’s dismissal of Joyce (who probably thinks of “parties” in the paper hats and birthday cake context) and her grin in the third panel before she catches on to the sarcasm, I think Sarah might have picked up on Billie being more into the “police action” scene.
Not at party schools. There is justification for the stereotype.
Similarly, people who think taking a glass or two of wine with dinner is the equivalent of the Animal House frat party need some perspective.
As for Sarah’s reaction to Billie, remember they’ve already met at the mandatory dorm meeting. Billie’s arrogant behavior already made a first impression on Sarah. A negative one. Billie doesn’t know that since she probably ignored everyone except Ruth, but the spoiled brat does need to learn that actions have consequences.
As for people who drink or drug themselves senseless nightly, they must really hate themselves and/or their lives that they have to escape in such an extreme fashion. What’s in your head that you can’t face it? You should seek professional help.
You straight edge folks really annoy me.
You’re so preachy for no reason. A couple of beers with friends or coworkers is always fun, and DOES NOT usually turn into a drunken orgy. Unless you’re a moron.
Except this is a college situation and Billie asked for a GOOD party. Which, given Billie’s reputation that does indeed preceede her, indicates she wants to get shit-faced.
My only issue with that situation is one most people don’t think of.
“If you’re having beers around these people, does that mean you can only stand them when you have what is known as ‘a pleasant buzz’?” Because from some people I’ve asked this of, the answer has turned out to be yes a good bit more than they’d like…
The crowd that equated partying with the ONLY type of social experience has always rubbed me wrong, as well. I have never seena ny evidence that these guys have become in any way more socially experienced and successful later on, and the insistence of these guys that anyone enjoying some other type of type of social gathering than partying must be socially inept was, and always have been, geniune, jerkish idiocy.
Billie’s representing the sort of ideal balance actually: her social growth has not been stunted to exclude anyone who is not into her lifestyle, but still able to enjoy a good time.
Of course, she is in denial due to her character, but she’s really a lot healthier than most people I have had a chance to meet irl.
So TODAY is the day you meant when last week you said that Sarah would be smiling sarcastically next week.
I’m kinda tempted to end this post by asking if Sarah was gay in this universe but frankly, that joke is starting to wear thin already.
Sarah was rude here, but not in any way unfitting of a sarcastic snarker. I think people are being too hard on her here. If you can’t sarcastically dismiss requests from a complete stranger, who can you sarcastically dismiss?
Or maybe it’s just that Billie has spent most (every?) night drunk off her ass and, with her room being just next door, Sarah already knows that? I mean, walls are thin and even if you don’t know names you know something is going on.
Not to mention the vomit that smells of booze splattered over the bathroom in the morning….but that could just be my experience of a bad room-mate!
Sarah’s snubbing and rudeness to Billie in these last few episodes seems unjustified. As far as I can tell, Billie is trying to legitimately be nice and make friends with her neighbor.
Maybe this kind of unprovoked asshole behavior is amusing, and my sense of humor simply isn’t tuned to appreciate it. I don’t know.
I started university this year and i’ve never met a person who was such a see you next tuesday as sarah.
If someone’s shallow or annoying you can just ignore them, universities are big places, there’s no need to act like that.
At least with mike it’s funny – he gets off on being a dick, but i really don’t know what willis is aiming for with sarah, she just seems miserable.
“If someone’s shallow or annoying you can just ignore them,”
That’s usually what the shallow and annoying people claim.
Sarah just doesn’t believe in the “duty to retreat.” Which is good, we need a lot more people who don’t.
It’s a bit harder to ignore them if they’re your neighbor.
Sarah is super serious and doesn’t want people to interfere with her studies. She’s only there because of her grades and if she screws up, she has to go home. She might be coming off as harsh but to her it’s a matter of her collegiate survival.
well, i was thinking of posting the same comment, so don’t feel bad, we’re all human, we all feel the irresistable compulsion to make sex jokes. it is in our nature.
I can so see Sarah being suited to Raven. She has that annoyed tone about her all the time, and when she smiles it’s her being super crazy creepy or being sarcastic major
I respect other people and their choices and lifestyles as much as possible, but when those choices are self-destructive, stupid, and, most importantly, harmful to others…I’d say pretty much what Sarah said.
I abhor Billie, so I don’t trust her definition of “party” for a second. “Party” for me, personally, is hanging out with several pals over movies and videogames (given we are over 21 I wouldn’t frown at them drinking a beer or two). Billie’s sounds like “if the cops didn’t show up we are doing it wrong”.
In defense of partying, there is a perfectly fine middle ground between the two examples you gave, you know. Generally the ‘everyone’s wasted enough that everyone seems hilarious and nobody gives a shit that they can’t dance any more’ area. Having been to several parties in my time (at least four), in my experience the kind of shindig where everyone is absolutely off their faces and trying to dance is easily the best kind of party.
Oh, I understand that completely and I approve of that too, just I can’t do much physical activities due to…health problems ^^;; thats why thats MY definition of partying. :3
I like your example (and instances), though, I would go to one if I could just sit and watch and have someone I trusted there ^^;; [/paranoid]
I’m oddly charmed by the idea of a Party Observer. It’s got a real David Attenborough, Gorrilas In The Mist feel to it.
“And now we see that most beautiful of sights, the mating dance of the Lesser Spotted Teenager. Observe how the male of the species puffs out his chest, and begins the traditional mating call. The sound of “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down“, which you have probably heard in your streets and gardens if you are ever about after ten in the evening, is as iconic as the species itself.
“Now, see how the male, after failing to get the attention of the female, resorts to drastic measures, removing his shirt and standing on the sofa. However, our friend has no better luck here, as he suddenly tumbles off the sofa, and promptly falls asleep.”
High School Billie (my idea for a new doll line to rival Bratz; don’t steal it) desperately needs to be ushered into the real college world. What with Sal moonlighting as Amazi-Girl and making entrances and exits through windows Batman-style, she’ll continue to be too tightly wound. I’m sure she’d loosen up if only someone would fix her. Joe could probably do that. With his penis.
Sarah scares me so much in that last panel. She is one of those “Shouldn’t smile like that” characters, otherwise she looks like she might go crazy on everyone lol
Sarah annoys the hell out of me. I’m sorry- I went to college, graduated, and am going to a graduate school program that accepts four people a year with a full scholarship. And yeah, I got fucked up occasionally on alcohol and *gasp* drugs. But that doesn’t mean I lost every sense of management and failed out of all of my classes.
Girl needs to get the stick out of her ass.
Yeah, but you didn’t have a roommate the previous year who was CONSTANTLY screwing up, getting high, and almost got you expelled because of THEIR actions. As established in the earliest comics, Sarah almost got in MASSIVE trouble because of her druggie roommate. So, I think she has every right to be a bongo about this sort of thing, because she doesn’t want a repeat of last year.

btw if you're one of those rando bluesky weirdos who doesn't know me but sees me in the wild being sarcastic and don't know i'm being sarcastic because you haven't taken like 30 seconds to, like, maybe look at my user profile or something, keep walking, you're not going to score internet points here

I’m thinking she’s had some bad experiences in the past. Flashback?
At least she’s being cheerful about it…?
She caught her roommate doing drugs, I believe. I think she wants to keep herself and her academics safe. Others didn’t see it that way.
Yeah, wasn’t all this covered when Sarah was introduced here?
She said her former roommate did drugs, she didn’t really say much else.
And it’s been implied a few times that she narc’d on her former roommate, and she’s flat out said she just wants to focus on her studies.
Is Ethan gay? Having it covered before doesn’t mean people won’t be confused by it.
Hey, let’s email Willis and ask him!
I’m with sarah, i hate all the people at college who are all “wooo lets go drastically alter our brain chemistry for no reason! wooooo”
A party doesn’t have to involve drugs or alcohol. Some of the best college parties I’ve been to involved no intoxication at all.
Wanton hooking up, though, is another story.
yeah, but we know billie is one of those people who make “party” and “fun” synonymous with “boozahol”
I suppose, but this is one of the few times I don’t blame Billie. Maybe she just needs a break from being a total bongo to everyone and getting her ass kicked.

so shes turning into mike?
Poor Billie, she still has a lot to learn still that she’s not in high school anymore.
very unsubtle sarah
A Wild Billie appears!
Sarah uses Sarcasm Burn!
It’s super effective!
Best post ever.
Robin looks shocked that that worked. Clearly she hasn’t been studying her type relationships.

Hey, at least Sarah and Joyce won’t have any disagreements about drugs/alcohol, right?
An impressive display of sarcasm.
I’m shocked no one has made Sarah’s face in the last panel into a Gravatar yet.
Wow. A week in which Billie doesn’t come across as the biggest jerk in the comic. Bizarre.
idk, she was pretty dismissive of joyce, not to say that she would know where any parties are but billie didn’t need to be so harsh about it.
Sarah comes off as a sassypants. Billie’s still the jerk.
I <3 her either way still.
So simply because someone’s a cheerleader, it’s okay to destroy their property?
You realize that kind of puts you at or below the level of the people you disdain, right?
Well, you’re free to make all kinds of assumptions about me, but they’d be wrong.
You only assume our assumptions are wrong.
My mind, it is blown!
So then what exactly is the situation? Ruth is being entirely inappropriate *even if* Billie is, gasp, a cheerleader!
So what is so horrible about being a cheerleader that makes Ruth’s actions okay?
Well for starters, I never said her actions were right. I said I’m kinda on her side.
Having been on both ends I can’t hold a grudge against those who gave me my karmic comeuppance, look down on some dishing out something similar on another cheerleader, or really feel bad for a cheerleader who treats everyone around her like shit and then gets exactly what she deserves.
Would I do it myself? No. But I’m gonna laugh about it.
should I feel bad for starting this argument? XD
Fair enough. That’s a lot easier to understand than the initial post. :p
I like Sarah, I think that she is by far my favorite DoA character.
I think sassy Sarah just earned some cool points. Joyce now thinks she has found a fellow unintended prude.
Aww, but everyone knows flares aren’t necessary when most SWAT teams have access to night vision optics!
you and i have different definitions of the word necessary my friend,
Necessary: adj: something that adds to a situation in a way that makes it kickasspumpkins
Necessary would be bringing the flash-bang grenades to liven up the party.
hmmm…maybe we don’t have dissimilar definitions after all…touche goatman touche.
I love Sarah.
ditto, she’s snarky in all the right ways
And I don’t mean “love” as in “I want to do horribly perverted thigns to her,” I mean, “I want to give her a high-five, and maybe some money, because college students are poor.”
…I want to do pervy things to her and help her out.
/is a college student
Sarah is right. Drunken idiocy should be postponed until grad school.
Well, that’s how _I_ did it.
I fully agree with you, grad school is the time for drunken idiocy. Everyone’s legal then, and it is more of a stress reliever than an everyday action.
Sarah really rubs me the wrong way.
(lol nerdangst)
So TODAY is the day you meant when last week you said that Sarah would be smiling sarcastically next week.
I’m kinda tempted to end this post by asking if Sarah was gay in this universe but frankly, that joke is starting to wear thin already.
Wow Sarah sure is a party animal, I wouldn’t have thought she was into that kind of party given her history…
Has anyone noticed Billie’s Darth Vader moment in panel 2?
“YOU HAVE OUTLIVED YOUR USE FOR ME, ADMIRAL JOYCE.” *force choke*
Sarah was rude here, but not in any way unfitting of a sarcastic snarker. I think people are being too hard on her here. If you can’t sarcastically dismiss requests from a complete stranger, who can you sarcastically dismiss?
SNARKINESS IS ALLOWED NOW? FO’ RIZZLE?
appropriate gravatar is appropriate
Wild Ass Theory: Billie acts and/or looks too much like the roommate that gave Sarah so much trpuble last year; hence the instant hate.
That is probably the most unwarranted use of sarcasm I have seen in a long while.
Sarah’s face in the last panel scares me
I don’t think Joyce has any idea what’s going on anymore.
When did Joyce have an idea what was going on?
She’s probably day dreaming about Ethan … who may or may not be gay in this ‘verse
Someone else mentioned this. They’re next door neighbors and dorm wall\s are notoriously easy to hear through.
Indeed, I lost many nights’ undisturbed sleep to the revelings of drunken neighbors. There’s no soundproofing in dorms.
This comics had 69 comments… I just ruined it. =/
well, i was thinking of posting the same comment, so don’t feel bad, we’re all human, we all feel the irresistable compulsion to make sex jokes. it is in our nature.
I always picture Joyce’s voice as the girl who voiced Starfire from Teen Titans. Hehe.
Does this mean that you also picture Billie’s voice as Raven then?
Haha no, Billie is too cheerleader for that. I picture her as Julie from the Scott Pilgrim series.
But Walky is definitely Beast Boy. hahahaha
Ex-cheerleader; Billie doesn’t seem as cheerful as she would have been back in highschool.
Personally I think Ruth should be voiced by Lisa Ortiz and have Mike voiced by Bruce Campbell.
No way, I always heard the voice of the blonde powerpuff girl in my head for Joyce, and Billy West for Walky
I can picture Joe been voiced by one of those guys from Jersey Shore.
I think Sarah is more suited to Raven than Billie is.
I can so see Sarah being suited to Raven. She has that annoyed tone about her all the time, and when she smiles it’s her being super crazy creepy or being sarcastic major
Hee hee. I’m liking Sarah more and more!
Excellent work.
OMG! IT WOULD BE LIKE WATCHING WILD ANIMALS TRYING TO MATE!!! I KNEW watching discovery channel would pay off one day!!!! 8D
And the winner is?
Is batman gay in this universe? He does have to be BEST at everything…
Oh please… Even if he isn’t gay, Batman could make any man, gay or straight, orgasm with a simple “I’m Batman”.
Because saying ‘no’ is never sufficient.
Flares and a S.W.A.T. Team? That actually does sound like fun!
