She caught her roommate doing drugs, I believe. I think she wants to keep herself and her academics safe. Others didn’t see it that way.

And it’s been implied a few times that she narc’d on her former roommate, and she’s flat out said she just wants to focus on her studies.

A party doesn’t have to involve drugs or alcohol. Some of the best college parties I’ve been to involved no intoxication at all.

Wanton hooking up, though, is another story.

yeah, but we know billie is one of those people who make “party” and “fun” synonymous with “boozahol”

          April 29, 2011 at 1:06 am | #

I suppose, but this is one of the few times I don’t blame Billie. Maybe she just needs a break from being a total bongo to everyone and getting her ass kicked.

Sarah really rubs me the wrong way on this. I don’t like drugs, but I’m not going to make other people feel bad about how they choose to live. I might give advice, but not sarcastic admonishment.

            April 29, 2011 at 1:15 am | #

Fair enough, you can’t control how people live their lives and you shouldn’t. At the same time, Sarah seems to be at the wrong end of some judgement herself merely for trying to prevent her life from being ruined by someone else’s bad habits. Having been in a similar situation myself, I can hardly fault her for being a little snarky.

              April 29, 2011 at 1:45 am | #

There is a difference between “controlling how people live their lives” and “Hey, uh, maybe you should cut back a little on the booze.”

                Ash
                April 29, 2011 at 1:50 am | #

Which isn’t what Sarah’s doing, she’s openly mocking a lifestyle she doesn’t approve of and wouldn’t choose. If I made a point to mock someone’s lifestyle because it’s not what I would do, well, that’s the first step on the slippery slope to bastardom.

Amen, but I gotta say, I’ve been mocked in the same way for the lifestyle of little-to-no booze, and sometimes, (while i’m not saying this is a good thing) i’m tempted to lash back with some snark of my own

When I was at college, a total stranger came up to me while I was drinking a can of soda in a student bar, and asked if I had exams. When I said no, he began unasked-for amateur psychoanalysis, trying to find out why I didn’t drink alcohol.

So then what exactly is the situation? Ruth is being entirely inappropriate *even if* Billie is, gasp, a cheerleader!

So what is so horrible about being a cheerleader that makes Ruth’s actions okay?

Well for starters, I never said her actions were right. I said I’m kinda on her side.
Having been on both ends I can’t hold a grudge against those who gave me my karmic comeuppance, look down on some dishing out something similar on another cheerleader, or really feel bad for a cheerleader who treats everyone around her like shit and then gets exactly what she deserves.
Would I do it myself? No. But I’m gonna laugh about it.

Sarah really rubs me the wrong way.

I know that she wants to focus on her academics, which is totally understandable, but college is just as much about learning about social situations as it is learning academically.

Some of the best academic students I know from college can’t hold a decent job because they have HORRIBLE social skills, while those with decent to moderate grades but socialized a lot already have jobs where they’re working their way up and great families that love them.

I ended up going to med school so I haven’t done either yet, though. 😛

Yeah, you totally learn the best social skills drunk. Down there at the kegger, that’s where she’s gonna learn to interact with an employer and coworkers.

I’m being incredibly sarcastic, but I don’t actually attend such functions or partake of the drink. Maybe it transfers more than appearances would indicate? All I know is that when my roommate comes home fall down drunk and tells stories of all the people he punched out, he doesn’t sound like he’s learning anything he’ll need in a professional social circle.

Seems like you could probably learn the necessary social skills just fine without associating with such people.

You seem to assume involvement of alcohol being equated to balls out drunk. This is a mistake, the same one Sarah’s made. You don’t need to be balls out drunk to socialize, I mean, most parties I was at, most people only had enough to grease the wheels, so to speak. Very rarely were there “ZOMG POLICE INTERVENTION.”

Honestly, I don’t get the whole “haha college kids irresponsible drinking” thing. There IS such a thing as moderation.

I’ve never heard of responsible drinking referred to as partying is all. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with a glass or two, or whatever you’re comfortable with. When people use the word party though generally they seem to be talking about something else entirely. At the very least, I personally haven’t heard it used to describe anything else within the current context (non event-based parties).

I’d think that socialization would just be “Getting together with some friends” or something along those lines. I hang out with friends all the time. Sometimes they drink, that’s cool. I don’t personally do that, but it’s mostly just because I’m a somewhat bland person that way. Raised mormon, never got around to trying the stuff. Not like I have a policy against it, just hasn’t happened. Any party I’ve heard about though doesn’t end in anything other than passing out from excess at some ungodly hour, hopefully having made it back to your own bed.

What you’re describing sounds like basically a social gathering where one could meet new people and crack open a cold one. That doesn’t sound bad at all. That actually sounds quite pleasant. Maybe one day I’ll encounter something like that.

Yeah, that’s basically what I’m describing. Social gathering, which also means a party. You’re thinking of the whole FRAT BOY ROOFIE PARTY YARRGGHH. I have to say that nearly none of the parties I’ve been to were like that, just a large amount of people mingling and meeting new people and stuff. The few times I HAVE ended up in one of those parties, I left in disgust, so I know where you’re coming from, at the least.

So the moral of the story is to not make comments on “partying” if you’ve never done anything of the sort? Makes sense to me. I’ve never been invited to a party with alcohol, much less gone to one.

I may not partake, but that doesn’t mean I don’t bear witness. As I’ve stated, the parties I’ve been in contact with have not been what he describes. To quote pulp fiction

Jules: You know the shows on TV?
                Vincent: I don’t watch TV.
Jules: Yeah, but, you are aware that there’s an invention called television, and on this invention they show shows, right?

To profess complete ignorance on the topic simply because I don’t partake would just be ridiculous. I’ve never sky dived before either, and yet I’m aware of what the activity entails. If someone asked me if I felt it was necessary to sky dive in order to attain the skills needed to succeed in life, I feel I could give a reasonably informed answer. Namely, that plenty of people do not sky dive and get by just fine in life.

Similarly, I can name a great number of people within my own life who have never been large on the party scene, and yet still managed to somehow acquire the social skills required to hold respectable jobs with a pay that suits their needs and enviable hours and workloads, and even continue to work their way up the ladder through promotions. Librarians, professors, entrepreneurs and tradesmen. One does not find themselves socially bereft simply by not having frequented this single category of social function.

Gangler, my friends and I have parties all the time. We drink, and don’t get shitfaced. “Party” does not automatically mean “irresponsible boozing.”

If an alcoholic frat boy says “party,” yes, he probably means “crappy music and complete intoxication.” If a regular person says “party,” he probably means “pizza, a DVD, and some drinks with friends.”

Yes. We’ve established that such was my error. I still maintain that I’ve never hear it used in that sense before, but evidently such is a use of the word.

I’d be more inclined to call that hanging out or something to that effect, but it’s all good. I’ve learned from this and won’t make the same assumption next time it comes up.

Though, to clarify, we all think Billie’s talking about getting shitfaced here, right? That’s not an argument that’s happening, I think.

Not at party schools. There is justification for the stereotype.

Similarly, people who think taking a glass or two of wine with dinner is the equivalent of the Animal House frat party need some perspective.

As for Sarah’s reaction to Billie, remember they’ve already met at the mandatory dorm meeting. Billie’s arrogant behavior already made a first impression on Sarah. A negative one. Billie doesn’t know that since she probably ignored everyone except Ruth, but the spoiled brat does need to learn that actions have consequences.

As for people who drink or drug themselves senseless nightly, they must really hate themselves and/or their lives that they have to escape in such an extreme fashion. What’s in your head that you can’t face it? You should seek professional help.

The crowd that equated partying with the ONLY type of social experience has always rubbed me wrong, as well. I have never seena ny evidence that these guys have become in any way more socially experienced and successful later on, and the insistence of these guys that anyone enjoying some other type of type of social gathering than partying must be socially inept was, and always have been, geniune, jerkish idiocy.

Billie’s representing the sort of ideal balance actually: her social growth has not been stunted to exclude anyone who is not into her lifestyle, but still able to enjoy a good time.

Of course, she is in denial due to her character, but she’s really a lot healthier than most people I have had a chance to meet irl.

I respect other people and their choices and lifestyles as much as possible, but when those choices are self-destructive, stupid, and, most importantly, harmful to others…I’d say pretty much what Sarah said.

I abhor Billie, so I don’t trust her definition of “party” for a second. “Party” for me, personally, is hanging out with several pals over movies and videogames (given we are over 21 I wouldn’t frown at them drinking a beer or two). Billie’s sounds like “if the cops didn’t show up we are doing it wrong”.

In defense of partying, there is a perfectly fine middle ground between the two examples you gave, you know. Generally the ‘everyone’s wasted enough that everyone seems hilarious and nobody gives a shit that they can’t dance any more’ area. Having been to several parties in my time (at least four), in my experience the kind of shindig where everyone is absolutely off their faces and trying to dance is easily the best kind of party.

I’m oddly charmed by the idea of a Party Observer. It’s got a real David Attenborough, Gorrilas In The Mist feel to it.

“And now we see that most beautiful of sights, the mating dance of the Lesser Spotted Teenager. Observe how the male of the species puffs out his chest, and begins the traditional mating call. The sound of “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down“, which you have probably heard in your streets and gardens if you are ever about after ten in the evening, is as iconic as the species itself.

“Now, see how the male, after failing to get the attention of the female, resorts to drastic measures, removing his shirt and standing on the sofa. However, our friend has no better luck here, as he suddenly tumbles off the sofa, and promptly falls asleep.”

As established in the earliest comics, Sarah almost got in MASSIVE trouble because of her druggie roommate. So, I think she has every right to be a bongo about this sort of thing, because she doesn’t want a repeat of last year.

Here's an entertaining cite at the bottom of the first page
The problems with this prosecution are legion, but most immediately, the
government cannot prosecute Judge Dugan because she is entitled to judicial immunity for her official acts. Immunity is not a defense to the prosecution to be determined later by a jury or court; it is an absolute bar to the prosecution at the outset. See Trump v. United States,
603 U.S. 593, 630 (2024).

You Can’t Even Watch A Movie Anymore Without Seeing Some Theme Explored
I’ve loved movies ever since I was a little kid. Just stepping into that dark theater, with the smell of fresh popcorn, was like being transported to a whole other world. It used to be so magical. But now I’m thinking about boycotting movies altogether. Why? Because I can’t seem to watch one anymore without […]

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908. "You will hear everlastingly... this argument that the rich man cannot be bribed. The fact is, of course, that the rich man is bribed; he has been bribed already. That is why he is a rich man."

Who can forget the Swiss-Austrian Union, or its famous capital - Istanbul.
AI generated ad by a company called Travello showing the 10 most visited cities in Europe, except the cities are hilariously poorly placed. London is in Wales, Paris is in Ireland, Rome is in France, Rom (yes like Rome but without an E) is in Spain, Barcelona is in Morocco, Prague is in Germany, Vienna is in Italy, Istanbul is in Austria, Milan is in Libya, and Antalya is correctly shown as in Turkey but is in the wrong place. Also a few of the borders like Switzerland and Austria or Hungary and Slovenia are missing.

wilbur, savvy enough to know he's in a comic strip but still not a great actor, awkwardly lifts a muffin up into frame so that we, the audience, understand that he has a muffin right now, which is very important narratively, but he's not really selling it well as an organic, human action
