Yes! And indeed to be romantic without being at all sexual, going by what I’ve been reading about asexuality. Erin and Jamie in “Girls with Slingshots” are a nice example of what’s possible- Jamie’s an actively heterosexual woman; Erin’s a lesbian who has little-to-no interest in sex; and they’re a couple. And it’s written to feel very plausible.
My parents didn’t exactly like that I watched it back when it was on the first time. I think Joyce’s mother would burn the TV set with a flame thrower if she ever saw that show.
I’m neither young nor sheltered and I’ve never watched “Rocco’s modern life” (well I caught a rerun here and there), I just picked “fishsticks” because it’s phonetically similar to the word “shit” and Joyce doesn’t cuss.
Never mind, that face isn’t chagrine….maybe unyielding delight that Dorothy still wants to hang out–more often, even–despite now being aware of the gay (ex-) boyfriend thing, although she doesn’t know about the ex part quite yet.
I do have to wonder how many people will be ending up going to dinner, though. Dorothy, walky, Joyce, probably Ethan, probably Becky, probably Dina (she just appears in group outings somehow)…maybe they’ll run into Amber and Danny on the way, too.
I doubt Dorothy wants anyone else there – the only other person that she knows is in on the secret is Walky, and he’s less tactful than a bull in a china shop.
Oh, and I doubt that Joyce presently knows that Dorothy has finally clued in to what she’s been hiding. Dorothy has given an uneasy glance at Ethan, but I think that was overridden in the mind of Joyce by I GET MORE DOROTHY TIME!
Dorothy also wouldn’t want Walky there as she wants to gently guide Joyce to good decisions while Walky tends to insult her for her beliefs and mistakes.
While it’s still true that more time with friends is great, mostly Joyce is floored that she gets to keep Dorothy as a friend despite the fact she was trying to “fix” Ethan.
Joyce’s Disney Princess Syndrome enters the final stages. Soon she will begin singing uncontrollably, and birds will alight on her extended fingertips.

Yah seriously. You know, being openly gay might actually be the best thing for Ethan’ s personal development, because his lifelong model for male behavior in heteroromantic relationships is “stifle everything and go with the flow” and that’s reeeeally unhealthy. Been there.
Whereas in a male homoromantic relationship, he has no behavior model to follow since they’re both dudes, so there’s no mold to try to break out of and he can go and grow at his own pace…hypothetically. he might just end up going with someone else’s flow again…but I feel like he wouldn’t immediately default to basically arm candy at first.
Relationships are relationships. Just because it’s two dudes doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be susceptible to the same baggage and pitfalls of straight relationships.
(It’s also worth mentioning that just because someone prefers going with the flow of things doesn’t mean they are sacrificing their own wants and needs to do so (although it’s a very bad thing if they are).)
Just look how Ethan and Danny interact. Danny’s default position in a relationship is to spinlessly do whatever his parter wants, and Ethan’s seem to be passive. Together they flirt and joke and give and take in the conversation. They would be adorable as a couple.
Dorothy is hanging out with her more! Previously Dorothy has either been studying or with Walky. Dorothy’s recent conversation with Walky had her admit her affection for Joyce and loosen up on the studying regimen, so Dorothy is communicating both of those things to Joyce.
Ya Becky over hears this and she just like ” I will have a hot girl cat with you over her” then Daisy shows up and is like ” Someone say hot girl cat fight ?”
I do love that style of scene. He grabs her ankle from the ground, she face plants, and the sabotage and conpetition just escalate from there.
Scene change: Amazi-Girl is patrolling on the rooftops, when a blur rushes by and knocks her off balance; one of them tried to take a shortcut to get outside.
Joe/Penny, Joe/Roz… Becky/Kaitlin, assuming they got that far before they got caught… Danny/Dorothy and Billie/Alice before DoA proper started… we don’t know Mandy/Grace, but it seems like a good bet. Joe’s dad/Amber’s mom. (Plus, y’know, any other character’s biological parents.) Sarah/other Jacob! Joe/Sierra, maybe? Mike/your mom.
I gotta vote for Becky/Kaitlin.
Though I’m not going to be able to afford to buy it any time soon anyway, so.
I don’t think either of them have established canonical birthdays (Alice certainly doesn’t), so it’s possible they were 18 for at least part of their senior year of high school. Danny’s in the same boat, though we know Dorothy’s 19 now, so she was definitely 18 for most if not all of her senior year.
(I won’t be reading it anyway, not my thing, but) Ehh, it may be cheesy but I thought a trope of the genre was “X and Y haven’t canonically done it but I can get around that by illustrating someone’s fantasy! It was all a dream!“
I’m surprised Sal/Jason is pulling that far ahead. I mean yeah, it’s Sal, and there’s the alternate universe shipping, but I mean, it’s Jason. He’s probably more whitebread than Danny when it comes to sex.
Don’t give her ideas! If she can afford a haircut, she can afford hundreds of potentially lethal implements, and that’s ignoring stuff like pencils that tend to be omnipresent in learning institutions anyway.

My copy of book 1 literally arrived just today! Now I can verify that, indeed, it’s the shirt Dorothy wore on the back cover (though it looks a little redder on the book cover).
He’s sort of restricted by the canon, I believe? Since Slipshines are canon to the comic and all, he can’t draw a scene between a couple who hasn’t actually had sex yet. Also he mentioned on tumblr that other than the options provided, he’s sort of stuck unless he has goes weeks/months back and draws up a couple who hasn’t actually done it in forever real time. Seemed like he felt like he was already pushing it with Sal/Jason.
I kinda agree, but with the slow timeflow of the comic it would feel rushed to dive into a new relationship without proper buildup. Most of the characters I REALLY want to see doing the bangy-times (such as Becky and Ethan… not with each others, obviously) will take months and months and months before they are anywhere close to ready.
I would love to see one of Roz’ videos. It would be a fun change of pace to actually frame the Slipshine as a PSA about condoms. “You put it on like… THIS, thanks Joe, and put it in like…. this… THANKS, Joe. Don’t forget to lube!”

It may be too much to hope that dinner will involve talking about all the things, starting with Joyce breaking up with Ethan and getting all the way into why she needs help getting outside. But that would be so awesome.

Unless he wants to use this opportunity to come out to Joyce’s friends (in case he feels the need to explain the ordeal he put her through) he really doesn’t have a reason to keep lingering.

Erin and Jamie in “Girls with Slingshots” are a nice example of what’s possible- Jamie’s an actively heterosexual woman; Erin’s a lesbian who has little-to-no interest in sex; and they’re a couple. And it’s written to feel very plausible.

I kinda agree, but with the slow timeflow of the comic it would feel rushed to dive into a new relationship without proper buildup. Most of the characters I REALLY want to see doing the bangy-times (such as Becky and Ethan… not with each others, obviously) will take months and months and months before they are anywhere close to ready.

It is sorted out already, except possibly a “thank you” for him following her home, “sorry” for Becky being a butt to him and “I’m there if you want to talk” if he wants to talk. But she has already broken up with him.
Unless he wants to use this opportunity to come out to Joyce’s friends (in case he feels the need to explain the ordeal he put her through) he really doesn’t have a reason to keep lingering.
Ethan is in bystander mode again. Just give him a nudge towards the elevator, and he should switch gears.

I just binge read this entire comic in three days. Why does it need to stop here. Also I can’t tell if Dorothy is just extremely guilty, or uncomfortable that she didn’t stop Joyce with the whole Ethan thing…
Joyce refrained “squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” ! It’s relatively effective.
