I imagine that at that point in the universe, learning how to keep cool would be very relevant. 😛

I wonder if life in general will survive that long…?

Heat death doesnt mean everything gets hot, only that everything in the universe becomes the same temperature and no more energy transfers can occur. Given that space is very ‘cold’ and there is way more space than stars, the heat death of the universe will actually be quite chilly. Bring a coat.

Sorry, pal, but learning to keep WARM is what the problem would be. The heat death refers to the death of heat, because all atoms have spread out to uniform distances and there is nothing that can ever happen ever again.

Of course, that also means that any sapient entities in question would likely be long, long, LONG dead, because their corporeal bodies are made of atoms, which would be spread out…

You got it wrong. It’s not about the matter spreading, but the energy potential accounting to zero. All processes in the universe move energy from a high energy to a low energy, until it’s even. With no differences of energy, no work can be done. Thus nothing can *happen*.

so that means that as long as souls exist to sing the praises of our heavenly father, the universe will never die.

(lets see how long I can keep a straight face)

That all would depend on if the universe is linear, parabolic or hyperbolic.

I would just like to now say that I am actually well aware of what Heat Death is (I studied a lot of physics in my maths degree at university, as well as being kinda into cosmology since a young age and from my love of shows like Dr Who), and was just making a joke based off the counterintuitively-named term “Heat Death”.

Hence the 😛 smiley I appended to my comment, that it would seem people overlooked. 😉

Still, I wonder if life might still be around to witness the heat death of the universe? Possibly having transcended the universe entirely, and be viewing it winding down from the outside?

            No…

Just because “science” is in the word, doesn’t make it science. Really, it’s the antithesis of science, usually involving drawing unfounded conclusions or cherry-picking evidence to support a bias. Science quells the “psuedo” through repeated experiments and internal consistency with other observations.

This is grammatically correct, as well–‘pseudo’, by definition, means the thing it’s attached to is not actually the thing. A pseudopod is not an actual foot; a pseudonym is not the actual name.

Puns and science are two matters I take very seriously.

You may take the appropriate time to process the irony of taking puns seriously. (As a scientist and not a writer, I’m not sure whether or not I used irony correctly there–it’s more subtle than most things in language I bother to use–so corrections are welcome.)

Anyway, I suspected a pun, but on matters of scientific integrity, I may take no chances.

I always end up aback outside of the normal work environment when dealing with “norms” and “office Types” because more times than not a 5th grader knows more about the scientific method than these ignoramuses.

Atheism professes belief in Not-God. If – IF, i say– religion is about the nature of God and Stuff, then we can make a case that Atheism is a religion. The negation of religion isnt Atheism, its “Meh, whatever”.

No, atheism professes no beliefs at all, especially in the area where gods are concerned.

Atheism is a belief in the same way that bald is a hair color, “off” is a TV channel, and not collecting stamps is a hobby.

No – not really. In science, people make guesses about how the universe works. Then they use those guesses to make predictions. Then they compare those predictions to what they actually observe in nature and in the laboratory. If the predictions made by the guesses are incorrect, then they have to go back to the drawing board and create a new set of guesses. That means that science is sometimes wrong, and in its early days it was often wrong, but it also means that as soon as scientists become certain that something is wrong, they change their guesses to try to be more accurate. Science slowly weeds out all the stuff that’s wrong.

We don’t have to observe stuff in real time to test predictions. For example, the Theory of Evolution predicts that some old species went extinct and some new species came into being. Common sense and geology say that, if evolution is really the case, then species that didn’t live in the same time period shouldn’t be buried in the same layer of rock. This is exactly what we observe in the field, so Evolution made a correct prediction. It doesn’t mean that Evolution is completely correct or definitively true; it just means that we haven’t been able to prove something false, and that it DOES provide an accurate description of what we observe.

Psudoscience may use similar terminology as science, and it may have “theories”, however the issue with psudoscience is that people begin to ignore or overlook the times when their predictions and guesses are incorrect.

Well, we also witness evolution on a regular basis. So evolution the process is an inarguable fact. The big debate as the creationists see it is whether or not evolution leads to speciation, the age of the Earth, and whether or not humans started out as such. But we also as a species have lived to witness speciation on both the microscopic and macroscopic scales without even using the fossil record, such as with certain mountainous tree frogs in Australia. So at this point what the actual theory of evolution is definitely isn’t getting thrown out. Perhaps tweaked slightly, as it has been a few times already, but we have more solid basis for it than we currently really do Relativity.

Evolution — continuity AND change of geno & extended phenotypes through time — is a bloody well established fact. It was labelled the “theory of evolution” before it was established as fact, BUT today youd label it a falsiable “hypothesis” about facts. THEORIES explain facts. Evolution is a fact. The theory of “the origin of species” BY MEANS OF NATURAL SELECTION is 1/one theory which explains the facts of evolution. And its a bloody brilliant and wonderful theory (“there is wonder in this view of nature” C Darwin ). AND IT IS A fabulously powerful and successful theory because of its predictions of what the facts are and what the facts will be,both as evolution continues AND as we continue research to discover facts which tell us what already happened in the past, in exactly the ways so nicely put by Just A. Thinker and Chupicron. People who say its “just” a theory havent a clue about what theories are or what science is (its kindof like sayi g that Truth is just Truth, Beauty isjust Beauty, Love is just Love). Theories do not turn into facts, no how, they remain theories even after theyve been tested and their explanatory power — and their limits (they all have limits: there is no “Theory of Life, the Universe and Everything, outside of THHGG) have been Tested and established. There are even today a few scientifically minded creationists who understand this and understand what the core scientific issues are even ss they are extreme outliers regarding the status of the relevant hypothseses and evidence. But they are only a few. There are some creationist who accept core facts about evolution and even accept a very limited/crippled theory of natural selection. These folks are scientific, but are wayoutliers from one of THE scientific consensuses. MOST creationists are pseudo in both fact and theory, and the more biblically literalist creationist they are, the more pseudo they are, to therealm of ludicrous fantasy. Including, the “theory of natural selection”which they claim to have refuted, isnt Darwins theory.

Be careful. There’s a lush rainforest of cognitive error involving ways to convince yourself that something can’t be true. It’s the source of a lot of conspiracy theory – just look at the people saying “This smudge in this photo couldn’t be produced by the claimed mechanism, therefore the Twin Towers were demolished with pre-placed explosive charges.”

Similarly, a lot of creationist rhetoric revolves around minor flaws in sub-instances of e.g. radioisotope dating. A lot of climate change denial is similar.

So if you make blanket statements about how science rejects everything that’s found to be wrong, you’re laying a foundation for someone to say “Well, such-and-such was wrong, and evolutionists didn’t reject it, so evolution isn’t science!”

In real life, any scientific observation needs to be checked and cross-checked, even in physics (see “polywater” and “cold fusion”) and it’s not always immediately obvious where the problem lies (remember the faster-than-light neutrinos recently?) So it’s better to say that science cares about being consistent with reality, than to say that science instantly rejects every apparent contradiction.

However you are either a dup or a member of THE CONSPIRACY. The Towers were not taken down by either airplanes or planted explosives, they werent taken down at all, they are still right where theyve always been, . But their appearance is being masked by cloaking devices. Theyve been taken over and are being used as the HQ for the UN’s Secret Plot for World Government. Although there is another that a Borg scoutmission pulled the Towers off the Earth and into an orbitting cube using one of those Borgy Tractor Beams Powerful Enough to Pull REALLY Big Stuff Right Off of Planets. And dont try to tell me about films of airpkanes and the Towers collapsing. I saw the Eifel Tower DANCE, with my own eyes, during a big Bastille Day Exrtravaga: done with lasers or FX or something.

IN 1942-43 there was an Ultra Secret Plan being developed to train an army of kittens who would infiltrate the German lines and completely paralyze their entire army in one coordinated strike. But they couldnt get the kittens to march in step in columns and the general in charge, who insisted that the kittens had to go throughvthe same traing as human soldiers scuttled the program. (A few of the kittens did transfer to human units undrver the “Dont Meow, Dont Growl” (DMDG) program, but their contributions tovthe War effort havenever gotten the recognition tha they deserve.) In the 50’s the Rand Corporation did an Ultra Secret study (Project Snowball), to see if the Herding Cats Problem could be solved and the original program revived in order to counter the superiorty in armored forces of the Group of Soviet Forces-Germany without resorting to early use of nuclear weapons. Some progress was made but tge Soviets evidently got wind of the program because NATO intelligence started seeing evidence of Soviet unitsbeing issued supplies of catnip, with tge evident intent of distracting US kittens from advancing on their targets. SOme US analysts downplayed the tactic, arguing that stoned kittens are even more fascinating to soldiers than sober ones, so the Soviet Koshka Nip would actually backfire if used. Its not actually known whether any kitten battalions were deployed to Germany, but the CIA did plant a kitten wearing a bugged collar with the mistress of a high ranking Soviet general. … ive heard theres a movie being made about this starring george clooney, but theres debate whether CGI cats couldbe used or they would need to wrangle herds of contemporary kittens portraying patriotic cats of the 40s and 50s.

I dunno I think they could make it (as a shipper I might be biased) at least if Becky learns to be a little less outrageous and attention hogging for Dina’s sake. (Unless she can manage to draw attention to herself without also drawing some to Dina but that’s different.)
That said I don’t want them to jump right to dating though cause any relationship that does that is doomed. So I ship them as friends in hopes that it will become something more.

Optimistically, that might also be a tease that she’s getting re-matriculated. Reconciliation with her Helldad, some kind of scholarship arrangement we haven’t heard about, or something farther out like Rich Kid Billie might having enough interest and money to burn to cover a second tuition for a semester. Becky getting back in school would be the best of all worlds, yeah?

Maybe? Some schools are pretty loose about how late you can get in, especially if some kind of after-the-fact “transfer” was arranged with her old school in exchange for (say) avoiding a discrimination lawsuit. The school year’s still pretty young, and I can remember new faces arriving in mid-October – although that was back in the 80s.

They can and do. The students who attend have to sign some sort of honor code deal that says they understand they will be removed from the school if they violate the school’s moral code. Christian colleges aren’t like normal colleges. There was a big to-do a few years back when it was discovered one Southern Christian college still had a ban on interracial dating.

@ Lapin: You are correct, the school you are thinking of is Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. They finally dropped the ban in 2000, but they still have a rigid code of conduct for their students: pre-marital sex and use of alcohol or drugs are grounds for immediate dismissal; no facial hair for men; students are not allowed to go to movie theaters; they can’t wear apparel from companies BJU objects to (ex. Abercrombie & Fitch); all lights on campus have to be out by midnight; and instead of spring break everyone attends a Bible conference together. Just participating in a demonstration for a cause that BJU objects to (ex. abortion or gay rights) is enough to get you kicked out. Basically, the kind of place Becky’s dad would want her to be.

That is only a short time scale. I’m only fourty, but I’ve been hearing songs that came out when I was a teenager on the classic channels for…oh call it a decade give or take a few years. More if classic rock had started recognizing geek rock and assorted subflavors of metal as rock rather than banishing them to the late night programming blocks.

You’d be surprised how resilient radio can be. For starters, they have a parasitic relationship with cars, so every American sixteen-year-old and European eighteen-year-old has a radio. It also happens to be the best way to make popular music popular music (probably because of said parasitic relationship) so the great cabals responsible for making popular music have a vested interest in keeping it that way.

My favourites are the ones who claim that fossils were invented by Satan in order to make people disbelieve Creationism. Like, back in the 1800s there were guys gound around smashing fossils with hammers in order to “save” people.

…And considering there were dudes in other parts of the world who were dynamiting their old dig sites to prevent their rivals from discovering any fossils that they might have missed, it’s surprising that there are many bones left that were found in that period.

I am so fond of dina due to her awkwardness. I was like her when i was little. Only until about 2nd grade though because school beat it into me that i can’t like just one thing.

I wish schools would let you focus on what you enjoy more then force you to learn a lot of stuff you probably will never use.

I mean that are you smarter than a fifth grader kind of shows how much stuff we force kids to learn that we never use when we get older.

Bah I am rambling I’ll shut up now.

I guess? I mean, the end goal is definitely to change Becky’s world view, but Dina is literally just stating facts. If I explain a chemical reaction to someone, I’m not trying to rock their world, just sharing knowledge.

Depends on your motivation. If the person you’re talking to has inaccurate beliefs about how chemistry works and you’re providing the information in hopes of changing those beliefs, you are absolutely proselytizing.

“Proselytize: to convert or attempt to convert someone from one religion, belief, or opinion to another.”

Nope. What Dina is doing here is attempting to change Becky’s worldview from a Creationist belief system to one that embraces scientific method and facts that can be proven through observation and experimentation. That’s still proselytizing, even though the tools she’s using and the new belief structure are both scientific in nature.

The religious have long pretended that science is itself a religion, so that they can call scientists hypocrites for “preaching” their science while simultaneously being unenthusiastic about creationism being put into schools. (Plus it makes it easier to dismiss science it you can convince yourself it’s not, well. science.)

That said, it’s certainly possible to be too pushy in trying to educate the people around you about science. Going door to door with it at 8:00 sunday morning, for example. Or starting a science inquisition and torturing anybody who disagrees with you, that’s also rude. But I don’t think Dina’s really crossed that line yet, not quite.

    • Bagge

Becky has a habit of speaking in a passive voice (not tone of voice obviously) that makes it seems that she agrees with whoever is speaking but in reality is non-committal. She did it a lot with Joyce the first day of her visit before she came out to her. It may have to do with growing up in an environment where you always had to hide a part of yourself, even from yourself.

I’m pretty sure that’s how the conversation started for Becky, and that she just enjoyed Dina’s company as you said, but now she seems to be genuinely interested in what Dina’s saying. Compare yesterdays “that long ago, huh?” with today’s “so how old is that?” – in other words, Dina is completely right to think that she is close to getting through to Becky.

One of the sidebars was “Other things to do nearby on your trip to the Creation Museum.” I was delighted to list every Natural History Museum and site of geological interest (lots of fossils and mention of things hundreds of thousands of years old) a day-trip or less away. Client paid happily for it, too.

It’s charming, but my reaction to this ship (or, rather, to most commentators’ reaction to the possibility of this ship) is that it is likely to go as follows:

No, but it could be. People are just gushing over the possibility – just as many people are gushing over the possibility of friendship (and really, for most posts it could be either and I have no idea what the author thinks).

I’m not really sure why the shipping is annoying. It’s all fanon anyway.

But Carbon dating is a kind of radiometric dating. Also we don’t directly date dinosaur bones because they don’t contain the right stuff. We find where the fossil is on a strat column, then find an igneous intrusion onto that formation and date that.

    THANK YOU.

Grew up in one of those Creationist households, and had my share of Ken Ham type books and movies. They pull the carbon dating chestnut SO MUCH. “Durr, scientists use carbon dating, but carbon dating can’t be used for old objects, hurr, scientists are wrong and stupid about dinosaurs.” They use it so confidently, and so often, like an ace in the hole. And since you don’t learn about other methods until you’re much older and usually set in your religious programming, no one questions it.

Now I have a handy, succint comic strip to hold up the next time a family gathering starts to go the “How can you believe in evolution? Don’t you know carbon dating is a conspiracy?” route.

Dina feels that she can convert (“save”) Becky from the fundamentalist/creationist belief that the world is only a few thousand years old.  Everybody laughs, because let’s face it, it *IS* a funny line.

Now, let’s say that Joe comes in and feels that he can convert Becky from her lesbianism by doing what Joe seems to do best.  HOO – HAA!!  Duck and cover, everybody!

In <A HREF="http://www.dumbingofage.com/2013/comic/book-3/04-just-hangin-out-with-my-family/blunt/"this strip Ethan’s parents figured that if Ethan banged Joyce’s brains out he would eventually come to like it (with the unspoken thought that he would then be “cured” of his gayness).  I was just reversing the gender roles and offering my two cents worth on the schidttstorm that something like that would stir up.

No offense intended; and after reading this clarification I hope none is taken.

“I’ll just have to pull an even more devastating attack out of my ass, Kurosaki!” [Shouts a phrase in a language that’s neither English nor Japanese, pauses for a beat, then yells another word in that language. Screen goes white, mountains are leveled, clouds are dispersed.]
