Based loosely off of "The Snow Queen", a story by Hans Christian Andersen, we see things take a different turn as the demons become central characters, and the side characters stick around. Yup, that's the only differences. Enjoy!

That it would… cause if you had a legitimate Frost sense, you could tell me how to get rid of all of it… and snow in Winter…. it’s bloody cold in Canada. Ruth would know
Well, terrifyingly precise. We don’t know if it’s accurate.
Probably not, since she seems to have missed the whole “just broke up with Walky” thing, which might just be more disturbing than running out of notebook paper, even to Dorothy.
It’s been fairly evident that something’s been wrong with Dorothy for a while. And especially wrong ‘today’ (not exercising, uncharacteristically late for class, and probably her demeanor during and after class), but Joyce has been distracted. This is just her observations catching up to her.
I, personally, like lemon. Minority, I know. I get why people love the pink ones and red ones, but lemon just has that flavor pop I love. Never tried grape though… Now I need to experiment (college again?).
I like all the basic flavors except cherry; I just don’t like cherry-flavored things. Growing up I wasn’t too fond of actual cherries either, but I’ve started to come around to at least dried cherries.
That seems to match up with my preferences, with the note that I don’t eat the cherry ones at all. (I don’t like cherry or grape flavoured things in general.)
But… Grape is great… just think about it, Grape Fanta… Grape Crush (okay those are basically the same, I know but still), grape licorice (if I can find it), grape fruit chews… grape was a nice flavour pop once in a while that refreshing to have. I like it anyway
I prefer lemon, but will eat anything except the “grape” flavour*, because that tastes… Well, like the smell of scented soap**. Like, parts of it is OK, but you can still also smell the soap part underneath. I have no idea why anyone would want that.
*At least, the US version of “grape” flavour.
**Since soaps will always taste purely horrible no matter how they’re scented, I had to go with how they can smell.
Billie pulls out her hammer, Joyce pulls out her sword, Walky unsheathes his rapier, Danny presents his uke and Dorothy reveals her book.
Walky: Here’s the plan, we each attack it one at a time until it dies.
Dorothy: Why don’t we just attack it all at once
Walky: There are rules Dorothy!
Billie: Oh fuck this shit…HAMMER TO THE FACE MOTHERFUCKER!
Billie swings her hammer with all her might only for Equus Aranea to grab her hammer before flinging her and it away. Billie slams into a tree and slumps.
Joyce: Billie! Fudge!
Dorothy: Joyce get out of the way. Ingnetus Fireballus!
A flame shoots out and heads towards the monster only for it to once again block the attack.
Dorothy: shit.
Dorothy is body rushed and slammed into a tree
Danny: We are screwed. We are so screwed!
Walky: Danny, just use the uke.
Danny: But I don’t know how to control it!
Joyce: she hurt Dorothy…
Danny: What was that Joyce?
Joyce: SHE HURT DOROTHY!
suddenly lightning starts to crackle around Joyce and her sword grows a bright yet pale yellow.
Equus Aranea: that sword. Where did you get it?
Joyce: Like I’d tell you.
Equus Aranea: that is the legendary sword of Luna, passed down for generations. WHERE DID YOU GET THAT SWORD!
Joyce: Die.
Joyce rushes at Equus Aranea and slashes through her body. Yet it remains alive.
Equus Aranea: You really think you can kill me. Fool, you can never kill me.
Danny strums on his uke and a glowing female eight feet tall and with a long glowing dress, extends from it.
Avatar of Luna: What is your bidding?
Danny: Can you get rid of that thing?
Avatar of Luna: It is done.
the avatar pulls out a massive bow and shoots Equus Aranea through the chest, causing light to envelope it. Finally it dies.
you forgot teleportation, or at least phasing in like the freaking predator and the Cheshire cat had an illegitimate love child who went on, breeding with humans, until we get Joyce. seriously, all she needs now is acid blood and she will be the scariest thing in all of fiction.
I’m beginning to think that one possible endgame is just the ultimate fusion of realities from Joyce and Walky, a poly-ship between Walky, Joyce, and Dorothy.
“Spine” is highly overrated in politics. There’s always the presumption that if your party just had enough “spine”, just fought harder and didn’t back down, they could make the party that actually has the legislative advantage give in.
It didn’t happen now. It didn’t happen back in the Obama years when the right wing was screaming that if the establishment GOP hadn’t folded somehow Obama (and the Dem. Senators) would have accepted repealing Obamacare.
I don’t know what this “again” is, because they’re not catching blame this time around, or any other time (like when they refused to hold a vote for Obama’s SCOTUS nomination). They’re going to frame this (and, in fact, already are) as the Democrats holding the government hostage because of the immigrants and look at how much more they care about immigrants than they do about YOU, the REAL Americans. They’re also going to take credit for CHIP, just you watch.
And if you think that DACA vote is happening (at least, without a MASSIVELY stacked deck), I’ve got several bridges to sell you.
You lot keep thinking there’s anything salvageable from the current Republican party OR their base when every evidence shows otherwise. It’s like you keep putting your hand in fire and being surprised that it burns.
They are catching blame apparently, according to the polling I’ve seen. Trump and the GOP are more blamed for the shutdown than Democrats. People are more in favor of passing DACA than before.
Now, you’re not going to hear the pundits saying that and you’ll hear more Republicans talking on the various news shows pushing the line you suggest, but it’s not entirely working.
Mind you, if you are right, it would have been even worse had Democrats stuck it out longer. The longer Democrats “held government hostage” the worse it would be for them.
We’ll see how this plays out. I think the chances are pretty slim, but they were always pretty slim. There will be another budget showdown. At least one.
…it’s *incredibly* naive to think the GOP going back on those promises is going to *hurt* it in November. Just as it’s naive of the Democrats to believe they’ve really secured a vote. McConnell is going to let the three weeks run out, try to manipulate things so he’s got the upper hand in the meanwhile, and refuse to have a vote on DACA anyway. Current Republican leadership lies compulsively; it’s how it got into power. Why would they stop something that’s worked for them so well so far?
Polling is going really badly for the GOP lately. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will lose, but it is an encouraging sign to get people ready to vote. The majority of Americans support DACA.
– The GOP is going to take credit for CHIP, and their base is going to eat that shit up like it was chocolate mousse; obligatory reminder that we’re talking about a party that said the state shouldn’t bother feeding schoolchildren and still won the elections, so it’s not like it matters anyway;
– If that vote happens (and that’s a big “if”), we both know it’s coming out a “no”, so, no, it’s not more than the Democrats had, it’s exactly the same as they had before, which was nothing;
– As we’ve just seen, they have no intention of actually USING that leverage to its full extent, so meh;
– You CANNOT be serious; bad to whom? Sure as hell not their base, who’d start a circle-jerk about how they put one over those dumbass libruls. In any case, it sure as hell wouldn’t hurt them nearly as much as the Democrats genius manoeuvre of supporting anti-choice candidates (including their latest VP choice).
What leverage? If the GOP is as bad as you suggest (which I can’t deny) and the political blame goes as you claim, why would they ever give in? How long should Democrats have kept things shut down, being blamed more and more for it?
– Honestly, people still supporting Trump at this point are probably a lost cause for now. The people who were willing to be persuaded have by and large seen this train wreck and jumped ship already. It’s going to take serious stuff or tremendous personal growth to get people still supporting him to change their minds.
– They didn’t even have a promise of a vote or a date to have a vote by. Having one at all is a step.
– I don’t really care about their base because the majority of people have been polling these decisions negatively. That said, you are absolutely right that the Democrats are really really REALLY not helping themselves.
Granted, if Agent Orange hadn’t said flat out that he wouldn’t sign one of the numerous bipartisan agreements offered to him that included CHIP AND DACA because they included DACA, we wouldn’t have had to deal with this nonsense in the first place.
Happy Nonbinary People's Day, you gemstones. A year or two back we introduced FLASH GORDON's first enby, the outlaw lawman Bones Malock. Having known and loved a lot of nonbinary people, I knew the truest way to represent you was as a unsettling desert pirate with a lightning sword
Happy International Non-Binary People's Day to all those who work, create, parent, protest, love and live without ever fitting into someone else's category.
Okay, everyone's jumping to conclusions, but Joyce was hit with a mysterious pink gas in Thursday's strip.
Now, in recent years, the police are known to increasingly use military grade weapons.
Which reminded me of this bit of proposed technology from the 1990s:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_bomb
hey, kid, what do you want to play with from the cool superhero movie? is it a nude, melting senator who feels like a stretch armstrong doll that has been left out in the son and maybe mildly chewed by a neighborhood dog? WELL, SON, YOU'RE IN LUCK!
Joyce is absolutely totally straight and just wants to hang out with her best friend, who happens to be another lady. This is normal behavior and a normal biblical quote to use that has no other context.
GAL PALS
OK, I said I was going to a thread of receipts together on the guy who runs Kapow, in odder to explain why I personally would recommend not giving him your business at TFN.
Starting with the original post, revealing the guy loves sharing right wing fascist stuff on LinkedIn.
Alex Maw@xjmaw.bsky.social ⋅ 6m
Since you might think it's weird you got a like on this over a year after the fact, the director of Kapow just shared this on LinkedIn; i.imgur.com/hqQYWgO.png
Joyce’s sense is… Keener
No.
Yes.
4th
NO!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Those two avatars are perfect.
Fire_daws
I thought the exact same thing lmao
Maybe you have a Frost sense?
Don’t think so, but it would be a cool thing to have.
That it would… cause if you had a legitimate Frost sense, you could tell me how to get rid of all of it… and snow in Winter…. it’s bloody cold in Canada. Ruth would know
to be fair, so is yours Fire_daws ~<3
<3 originally I had another ClaireFace but someone else had that before me so I had to switch. In hindsight I think I've got the best one now
You would be correct ^w^
Any and every happy Claire face is perfect. Because so is Claire.
i thought it would be a little dotty
god DAMNIT
hahahahahahahaha
I’d say she’s got a pretty good handle on her Dor’.
I love you . . . and yet I hate you. ;p
“Goddammit Barb!”
That joke was terrible and you should feel immensely proud because of it.
I appreciate terrible jokes a lot.
Joyce senses a great disturbance in the Dorothy.
???
That’s terrifyingly accurate. Is it bad to wish I had someone so attuned to me, or that I was so attuned to someone else?
nah
Nope. So many great comedies have brought such great amusement to such great numbers on the basis of such a horrific premise.
Well, terrifyingly precise. We don’t know if it’s accurate.
Probably not, since she seems to have missed the whole “just broke up with Walky” thing, which might just be more disturbing than running out of notebook paper, even to Dorothy.
Only if it’s someone you trust. Imagine if it was your worst enemy.
Why can’t someone you trust be your worst enemy?
Mind you for most people their worst enemy is themselves and that Murphy guy – god I hate him.
…. would my worst enemy be able to turn the sense off? Because if not I could so use it against them…
Isn’t that just Harry Potter?
is it just me or are a majority of updates, for a very long time now, just… the same frame over and over again
Willis has twins.
Given how far ahead he does his comics in advance, I have to wonder when we hit the “And now Willis is dealing with Twins when this was drawn” comics
Around 6-8 months after the fact
Yeah, IIRC the first strip after the twins were born was one of the Carla/Ruth ones way back. With the ginger snap cookies, I believe.
cherry starburst
RUN TO HER DOROTHY!
*joyce
JOYCE, RUN TO YOUR DOROTHY!
Strawberry Starburst.
Save the wrappers from those. You can cut up one of those big pink erasers into Starburst-sized squares and re-wrap them.
Watermelon starburst is the best and I will *die* on this hill.
You realize, this means … all the more cherry for meee!
–Dave, srsly kids, it stands head and shoulders, had cherries either one, above the rest
So Joyce is psychic?
I was wondering when this world would start moving towards becoming the supernatural counterpart to the Walkyverse’s Sci-Fi.
We’ve also seen her teleport before
Why bother with ESP when she can just watch Dorothy covertly using the miniature camera she hid in her room (it streams to Joyce’s cell phone).
I think Joyce is texting, and possibly writing Dorothy fanfic in her head, and definitely being a dork
That, or Willis’s drug habit (and/or twin-derived lack of sleep) has finally caught up with him.
And here’s the Joyce I love <3.
It's adorable how concerned she gets about Dorothy.
After this comment, I was expecting so many people flooding in “Dorothy x Joyce confirmed” replies… guess I was the only one who got the memo lol
Well, some of us have to sleep every so often, and sometimes that coincides with when the comic updates, but I assure you, the memo was received.
Very true, I forgot about sleeping… what’s sleep again? You’ll have to refresh my memory
That thing that happens when exhaustion finally beats out insomnia.
*plays New Edition’s “Candy Girl” on the freshly-re-authorized but still hacked Muzak*
Oh that’s right you were off until today.
Hey mister
Please Mr. DJ
Tell me if you hear me
Turn the muzak up
and this is how the Walkyverse enters the Dumbiverse
through joyce’s magical senses
Or… Joyce and Sarah are just messing around.
I thought the Dumbiverse didn’t have any supernatural elements to it.
Joyce has now demonstrated the ability to materialize from thin air and psychic abilities, so maybe she’s the exception to the rule?
It’s been fairly evident that something’s been wrong with Dorothy for a while. And especially wrong ‘today’ (not exercising, uncharacteristically late for class, and probably her demeanor during and after class), but Joyce has been distracted. This is just her observations catching up to her.
Oh, okay. So Joyce doesn’t have a girl crush on Dorothy. They’re long lost sisters, and this is the Force connection manifesting.
So, there will be a shirtless scene next?
Followed by a pay to read Slipshine! Come on Willis!
Oh, so you’re saying Kylo is Rey’s long lost sister?
…ya’know, I’m now this close to adopting Force Sisters as headcanon.
more like hop to her, right
Hop to me, when you’re feeling lonely,
Hop to me, when you need a shoulder…
But honestly, my first response was, “I thought it was a jump to the left, and then a step to the right.”
(I have been in many a dull and over-long meeting at work where I thought to myself, “It’s astounding…time is fleeting…madness…takes its toll.”)
But not for very much longer.
People with worse power sets have become superheroes.
Oh no, it’s grape!
<-Joyce's face as she gives Dorothy a pack of Favereds
I, personally, like lemon. Minority, I know. I get why people love the pink ones and red ones, but lemon just has that flavor pop I love. Never tried grape though… Now I need to experiment (college again?).
I like lemon a lot too. ^_^
My favourite is cherry, but I love lemon! I love citrus and sour flavours.
Cherry > Lemon > Orange > Strawberry. I like them all, but strawberry’s pretty mellow for me.
Practically the same. Cherry high-five?
Cherry high five!
I’m almost the same too! Cherry>Lemon>Strawberry>Orange for me.
Nice!
Am I weird for liking the green one most?
Lemon and orange are my favourites.
MY PERSON!
I like pretty much all except orange.
I like all the basic flavors except cherry; I just don’t like cherry-flavored things. Growing up I wasn’t too fond of actual cherries either, but I’ve started to come around to at least dried cherries.
I will cheerfully eat those cherry flavoured things if you don’t want them.
Lemon’s awesome.
Orange > Lemon > Strawberry > Cherry.
I…. really really really don’t like cherry in general. And I’m not that fond of strawberry in general, either.
…. I’m the only one who likes orange best, aren’t I?
…..
PHILISTINES! *sob*
You are not. Orange is the best.
That seems to match up with my preferences, with the note that I don’t eat the cherry ones at all. (I don’t like cherry or grape flavoured things in general.)
Watermelon would be awesome though.
FaveReds has a watermelon one.
I’m not sure if any grape starburst actually exists. I just went with the worst candy flavor in general
But… Grape is great… just think about it, Grape Fanta… Grape Crush (okay those are basically the same, I know but still), grape licorice (if I can find it), grape fruit chews… grape was a nice flavour pop once in a while that refreshing to have. I like it anyway
Has a nice flavour pop*
The Canada version of grape flavour has treated me well it seems.
Canada: 1, US: 0
Maybe it is different in Canada. Only grape flavored thing I can think of that I like here in the US is Monster
Okay, but can she guess what number Dorothy is thinking of?
Pie? Blueberry? Huckleberry? Nah, its Strawberry Rhubarb.
Joyce has a great future in the NSA.
So, does anyone have any update on Cerb?
:/
Ironically, while trying to find where I saw her email address, I ended up on this comic: http://www.dumbingofage.com/2016/comic/book-6/04-it-all-returns/todo/
I emailed her but no reply yet.
I guess Joyce has the Force. Not sure it’d be a good idea to give her a lightsaber though.
Is that because she was previously using Other Jacob as one?
I’m sure Becky has something suitably snarky to say about Joyce’s Dorothy sense and why it’s tingling.
Dungeons and Dumbing Part 5
Everyone: gaah!
Walky: Oh thank god that’s over.
Joyce runs over to Dorothy
Joyce: Dorothy!
Billie hobbles over.
Billie: She doesn’t look good.
This is fantastic thank you
At first I thought you said “this is traumatic, fuck you” and honestly I think both work.
Everyone’s talking about Joyce’s Dorothy-Sense. Meanwhile, I’m impressed with Sarah’s Joyce’s-Dorothy-Sense-Sense.
It’s finely tuned.
I think it’s just a Joyce Sense. This is probably how she knew to come to that party and beat the shit out of McStabby.
McStabby? He didn’t look Scottish to me.
Considering the “throw in the ethnicities and hit blend” philosophy of US people the Rapist guy might have had a bit of Scottish blood in him.
I’ve said this before, but…
JOYCE! BOUNDARIES!
There’s a watermelon Starburst?
This. I only know of four flavors myself.
It’s in the FaveReds package, with cherry, strawberry, and fruit punch.
I didn’t know that assortment existed. I just know the regular ones.
Here’s something candy-related: Necco Wafers used to have an accompanying brand, Huh Wafers. No word if they stopped small bullets like the Neccos.
https://ahundredyearsago.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/1914-12-63-a.jpg
oh my god..they have a force bond
So Joyce is Luke, Dorothy is Leia, and Sarah is Yoda. Got it.
Nonono, Yoda wants Luke to STAY.
Depends which movie we’re talking here.
Empire. It’s the only one where Luke wants to go to Leia because he senses she’s in trouble.
Walky is without a fully developed sense of empathy.
He’s spent a lot of time with Dorothy, around dorothy’s best new friend, and around that person’s roomie.
Their powers have become heightened by the lack of his. Repaired a hole in the group’s entire set, if you will. I shoulda known this would happen.
Even in the Dumbiverse, it seems Joyce has multiple superpowers, first super strength, now telepathic bonds
Also, the ability to fuse her teeth for smiling purposes.
you forgot teleportation, or at least phasing in like the freaking predator and the Cheshire cat had an illegitimate love child who went on, breeding with humans, until we get Joyce. seriously, all she needs now is acid blood and she will be the scariest thing in all of fiction.
Mary.
Joyce operates on toonforce.
I’m compelled to feel your opinions are 38% more authoritative with your avatar. Do not abuse this reflexive trust.
Anyone have any strawberry or cherry Starburst on them that I can have?
Okay, since when has Joyce been telepathic?
the Force is strong in her.
“Run to her.” …Sarah, think about what you just said.
Oh hahahahah, I just realized.
Okay this is no longer Sense, this is friggin telepathy or something…
Strawberry < orange < lemon = cherry.
That is my starburst flavor ranking.
Now we have telepathy. And here I thought DoA was supposed to be the down-to-earth comic.
It’s a banana starburst.
….
DAMN YOU WILLIS!
Also, I’m calling it. This page, while funny, is here rather than almost anywhere else so that the Big Awful doesn’t happen on February 13th.
…what is the big awful?
The prophesy foretold by the ancients (aka the strip(s) leading up to Valentine’s day which is always a time)
My book has been picked up by a Bona-Fide publisher…
Nothing to do with the comic…
Just wanna tell the WORLD!
Congrats!
Big win!
Congratulations!
Gratz!
Thanks!
You have about a year or so to prepare for my onslaught of plugs!
They picked it up, but where did they put it?
In their “To Be Published Next Year” pile !
Congratulations!
I’m beginning to think that one possible endgame is just the ultimate fusion of realities from Joyce and Walky, a poly-ship between Walky, Joyce, and Dorothy.
Sarah continues to give off all the signs that she wants Joyce to leave her alone, which she continues to ignore.
Yup, that’s exactly what’s happening here :3
Also, I hear the Democrats stopped pretending they have a spine? That was a hopeful couple of days.
If they had a spine, you guys would probably not have to deal with “President Cheeto dust”.
I can understand being angry and disappointed they didn’t hold out until they got DACA in the funding agreement, but I can understand their strategy.
– Now CHIP’s been funded for six years, the GOP can’t howl that the Democrats don’t care about children.
– The Democrats secured a vote over DACA. That’s more than they had before.
– They managed not to fund the wall or any restrictions to family based immigration the GOP wanted them to give.
– The funding lasts until 2/8, at which point they can still say ‘give us a clean DREAM act, or we don’t vote to fund.’ They have that leverage still.
– The GOP going back on these promises will look very very bad for November.
Yep. CHIP for six years, govt funding for three weeks. At which point the Rs get to shut govt down and catch blame again.
Is this even a 2-car-parade Trump and co are fuckkng up?
– The GOP is going to take credit for CHIP, and their base is going to eat that shit up like it was chocolate mousse; obligatory reminder that we’re talking about a party that said the state shouldn’t bother feeding schoolchildren and still won the elections, so it’s not like it matters anyway;
– If that vote happens (and that’s a big “if”), we both know it’s coming out a “no”, so, no, it’s not more than the Democrats had, it’s exactly the same as they had before, which was nothing;
– As we’ve just seen, they have no intention of actually USING that leverage to its full extent, so meh;
You mean they got children’s health care funded for another six years? Yeah, that was pretty good.
Granted, if Agent Orange hadn’t said flat out that he wouldn’t sign one of the numerous bipartisan agreements offered to him that included CHIP AND DACA because they included DACA, we wouldn’t have had to deal with this nonsense in the first place.
This, by the way, was after he said that he’d sign anything that was put on his desk.
No one ever hopes it’s watermelon.
I like watermelon. It’s probably my least favourite of that assortment though, you’re right.
