aaaaand I posted my correction of my correction to the correction I posted at the right comment, not the correction I posted at the wrong comment, necessitating this correction-correction.
Come on Becky, you are better than this. Be an adult and have a conversation with her. I know this isn’t Smarting of Age but you do have manners, right?
But she doesn’t want to be an adult in her relationship with Leslie. She wants to be a bratty troublemaker of a teenage daughter and have a Strained But Ultimately Loving mother-daughter relationship with her scared mess of an awesome lesbian mother.
If nothing else because that confirms their relationship as mother-daughter.
and all things considered, I can’t really blame Becky for wanting to play house a bit.
I was under the impression that she did not want Leslie to act as her mother and was part of the reason that she moved out? Of course I could be entirely mistaken on that.
I read that completely differently. I think she moved out to not feel like a mooch, and because she was ashamed for working for Robin after the entire mess between her and Leslie.
At certain point I wish the dumbing stopped. Cynicism become tiresome as comedians kicking the same dead horses over and over, like constant bigoted jokes of South Park.
I’ll say the same thing I tell anyone else, the jokes will stop when the situation no longer exists. And the situation continues in perpetuity for man of these things, including many things South Park’s jokes.
Dunno about that. For me this is a comic about people constantly struggling to improve themselves, and doing a fantastic job about it. When the dumbing continous it’s because they simply find NEW things to be dumb about
Just look at Joyce’s interaction with Jacob, where she has gone though at least three different itirations of dumb.
That much I can definitely agree with, and I’m not saying this comic is making the same situations over and over. But it is pointing out situations that still exist and are therefore relevant. I may not have worded my first comment very well.
Yeah, college is how you discover new and exciting ways to fuck up, and maybe, when you’re done, you’ll have figured out how to prevent doing a couple of those things again.
We’re only halfway through fall freshman semester. They’re gonna keep coming up with new ones. (Even arcs that seem to hit similar beats – say, Amber/AG – have been evolving. AG is no longer stalking Sal, Sal knows who Amber is, and they’ve tentatively made peace while the dissociative issues have gotten more dire.)
Wow. I did college very … differently … than that. I assumed college was for learning, and that’s mostly what I did. Now I feel like I did it wrong.
Sure, I did other things at college, but they were all secondary – they fit around the edges and never seriously interfered with my learning. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever had a “discover new and exciting ways to fuck up” phase of life.
I’ve done lots of exciting things, but I’ve always made sure to be slightly more cautious than adventurous. Slightly more deliberate than spontaneous. So I’ve done six extreme sports and never gotten a significant injury from any of them – does that make me boring or exciting? I don’t actually know how I feel about it myself.
College is not and has never really been purely about academics. Even at the original medieval universities (which taught only theology, law, medicine and art) students (who could typically be anywhere between mid-teens and early forties) had reputations among staff and surrounding communities for things like drunken debauchery. Making stupid mistakes and trying to learn from them has always been a recognized and accepted part of the process just as much as pure scholastic learning.
This is the Bratty lesbian teenage daughter / Scared mess of an awesome lesbian mom who see through her bullshit content I crave.
Becky, bless her soul lowers her guard to engineer a confrontation, but not enough to actually tell Leslie how she feels. Leslie, bless her heart, sees right through it and can meet Becky halfway.
Becky, it’s time you prove to edgelord Joyce that you can have morals and be a better person. Just talk with Leslie. It isn’t about finding a solution yet, but just… talk. When people don’t communicate there’s isolation and then violence.
I’ve just realize that I’ve mentally cast these two with the voices of Pearl and Amethyst, and I’m trying to remember if there was a point where that started or if it just Always Was.
Does going to therapy extend into Carrie Fisher’s previously established Space Mom domain of ‘take your meds’? Just want to be sure when to thank Space Mom appropriately.
I think the more important element of the last frame is the couch. The couch Leslie generously and lovingly let Becky sleep on and which Becky threw back in her face.
I love how all these mini-stories we follow in the wake (npi) of Mikes fall, feels like a series of very down-to-earth, solemn, reconnections with/tying up of loose ends.
1) God they need hugs,
2) I’m pretty sure Leslie heard about the breakin with the Brown sisters, but also I’m remembering Leslie’s got Becky’s background but a few years’ later breaking point and oof, that line’s suggestive of Sad Backstory given that fact.
3) See point one.
This it, everyone! All of the arc plotlines are gearing up to resolve in chronological(?) order! GET READY FOR EXTRA MIKE WITH A SIDE OF DAMN YOU WILLIS!
Becky’s hair is growing out and she looks older here. I like it. I often find her visually annoying but not here. Maybe cuz she has expensive clothes from her fancy new job?
I think Becky may want to talk to her surrogate mum about how she reconciles her faith with desire for PREMARITAL HANKY PANKY, so she gets to enjoy physical intimacy with her girlfriend… Leslie having come from a similar background seems a sensible person to approach about this…
However, I suspect Leslie may be agnostic/atheist now… I can’t remember if she states her beliefs anywhere though?
“I haven’t got the first clue of how to and besides doing it without a ring on her finger is a sin!!!”
Long beat. Leslie walks out of shot and returns with a ring.
“This should be the right size. Go for it, girl. More importantly, go for it later and elsewhere because I’ve got to get to work and I assume you have to do the same for Robin.”
time for Teh Talk
What if Becky prefers Teh View? She might be a huge Joy Behar fan, you know.
“Yeah, I’ve snuck into one, but it was mine, which makes it fine.”
leslie standing there very adorably with a baseball bat held behind her back in panel 2 seems like it should be a magnet or something
Dorothy pops up from the couch: “Becky, you are better than this!”
If Dorothy isn’t here to say it, the comments will be here to say it for her.
Dotty is doing last-minute studying for midterms
Not being able to multi-task is for people who don’t have enough notebooks.
Behind LESLIE’S couch
Robin pops up behind the couch: “Hey I found a Skittle!”
Honestly, Robin poping up from behind Becky’s couch is just to be expected at this point.
Behind LESLIE’s couch
aaaaaand I posted my correction to the wrong comment. Dig up, bagge. Dig up!
aaaaand I posted my correction of my correction to the correction I posted at the right comment, not the correction I posted at the wrong comment, necessitating this correction-correction.
UP, Bagge. UP!!!!
if you added any more, the result would be like those letters of protest appearing in episodes of Monty Python’s Flying Circus (RIP Terry Jones)
Everybody get ready to jump on the feels train! Choo-choo!

I guess we’ll see which it is when they speak to each other. Although the feeling ashamed for working for Robin I can definitely understand.

and as we saw just two days ago, now they have entirely new ways to be fucked up together.
Wow. I did college very … differently … than that. I assumed college was for learning, and that’s mostly what I did. Now I feel like I did it wrong.

It would be probably sound very exciting,
if you didnt suck all the fun of it with Humblebrags.
I was trying to talk about myself, not sound a certain way. If I wanted to sound exciting or brag, you would know it.
I’m sure Sarah and Dorothy would approve.

*hacked Muzak switches from Nirvana to The Mamas & The Papas’ “Words of Love”*
This is the Bratty lesbian teenage daughter / Scared mess of an awesome lesbian mom who see through her bullshit content I crave.
Becky, bless her soul lowers her guard to engineer a confrontation, but not enough to actually tell Leslie how she feels. Leslie, bless her heart, sees right through it and can meet Becky halfway.
Heartfellt but Hurt talk coming up!
Becky craves it too, apparently.
Oh yes! So very much.
Becky, it’s time you prove to edgelord Joyce that you can have morals and be a better person. Just talk with Leslie. It isn’t about finding a solution yet, but just… talk. When people don’t communicate there’s isolation and then violence.
Sorry, Becky, Leslie’s better at Mom-ing than you anticipated.
I’m pretty sure Leslie is just as good at mom-ing as Becky anticipated.
if anything, that’s probably the worry. She already had a good mom who up and died on her. She’s probably terrified of round two.
Oh dear, I didn’t consider that angle but you are right.
Scared messes all around
Becky, accept that Leslie’s got more experience with pulling crap than you do, and it will always be that way.
Then rebel against that truth.
I’ve just realize that I’ve mentally cast these two with the voices of Pearl and Amethyst, and I’m trying to remember if there was a point where that started or if it just Always Was.
… Pearl is an amazing voice option for Leslie.
Thank you for this mental gift. I shall treasure it always.
Hah! Yes, I can hear it.
Oh my god, that works well.
But I’ve been giving Becky the voice of Natasha Lyonne (Smoky Quartz) and *man*, has it been great. Especially when she’s peak sarcasm.
https://youtu.be/7xWStxdBdNs
Messed that one up.
… why did the background come sharply into focus in the last panel?
I am suddenly very paranoid about that artistic choice.
You know how in Shortpacked Roadblock from Ethan’s poster had magical powers and his stare could force you to do the right thing?
Becky’s about to get a long slow look from Leslie’s Leia poster back there and fess up some feels.
Carrie Fisher watches over us from beyond.
Does going to therapy extend into Carrie Fisher’s previously established Space Mom domain of ‘take your meds’? Just want to be sure when to thank Space Mom appropriately.
I don’t think it’s ever inappropriate to thank Space Mom.
So we can see that Star Wars poster on the wall, obviously. Though with Willis I think being a little paranoid is not unreasonable.
I think the more important element of the last frame is the couch. The couch Leslie generously and lovingly let Becky sleep on and which Becky threw back in her face.
probably to show she stopped moving
She is activating her powers. In the DoA movie it will be freeze-framed and then the viewpoint spins around her while zooming in.
Becky joins reality. Reality is real.
Damn You, Willis. You’ve left me no obvious opening for bringing up Mike.
He just hid it. And you found it in the end.
“That’s what she said.” Hurr, hurr, hurr…
This is about Becky’s relationship with her adopted mom.
…I’m sure there is a Mike-ism in there somewhere
Right you are. How did I miss that?
If you want more Mike, it’ll cost you a nickel.
I love how all these mini-stories we follow in the wake (npi) of Mikes fall, feels like a series of very down-to-earth, solemn, reconnections with/tying up of loose ends.

3) See point one.
Meanwhile we still have no clue if Mike’s alive or dead.
Becky and Leslie are good folk. I hope Becky can find it in her to love and trust again with someone who really wants to be a mom to her.
(I mean, Robin wants to look out for her, too, but kinda reads more like a big sister with questionable life decisions than motherly)
This isn’t really Becky. It’s a plant substitute … oops, sorry, just got here from Skin Horse …
This it, everyone! All of the arc plotlines are gearing up to resolve in chronological(?) order! GET READY FOR EXTRA MIKE WITH A SIDE OF DAMN YOU WILLIS!
There’s possibly performance issues with the website. If you look closely between panels five and six, you’ll see the background pops into existence.
Or the matrix is glitching out again.
Becky: “Wait, am I being criticised for being insufficiently sneaky, unkind and ungrateful? What the hell kind of world is this?!?”
The right kind of world.
Becky’s hair is growing out and she looks older here. I like it. I often find her visually annoying but not here. Maybe cuz she has expensive clothes from her fancy new job?
It’s nicely symbolic too: Becky the girl is quickly being overtaken by Becky the young woman.
She said “Thank God” so she’s probably in denial about how much she still believes in God.
http://www.dumbingofage.com/2017/comic/book-7/03-the-thing-i-was-before/caress/
I say “Thank God” often and I have never been a Christian, maybe it’s just a cultural thing.
Yeah, I sometimes notice myself using Jeez or Jesus as a word of exasperation, and I’ve never been Christian.
I often says “Thursday”, and obviously I celebrate the Norse god of Thunder.
Just as I in August celebrate the roman emperor-turned god
Surely you also similarly celebrate Tiu, Woden, Freya, and Saturn.
… but for me, it was Tiu’s day.
As a programmer and an agnostic, I say “Thank $deity”
Who is ready for a dramatic and awkward mother-daughter separation (or reconciliation) talk? Probably it will involves some tears too.
“So… uh… Dina wants to do… it.”
“Yeah, so?”
….also, she… won’t be wearing a hat!!!!
…meanwhile in a deserted back ally…
Mike: *goans*
A cat sniffs at him, leaps over him to chase a rat.
in the distance a dog barks
A door slams.
The maid screams.
Suddenly a pirate ship appears on the horizon!
Gradually, a shot rang out.
I believe you’ve written yourself into a corner.
Nobody puts baby in a corner.
Just going to leave this here for those who don’t follow Something*Positive.
