To answer the fingernail question: Mostly alpha-keratin, like drawing it is really hard. I’ve seen some of your old drawings under your name-link thing, you are really good at it.
I wonder how many furry artists got their start by being all “Gah, all my feet look like weird paws! Maybe I’ll just make her a wolf or some shit, then it’ll look normal.”
As an avid collector of furry art I can say that the majority of the artwork I have commissioned either doesn’t include feet, or has the character(s) wearing shoes so you may be right.
In my middle school art class, we learned about how drawing hands is The Worst, and then had a project focused specifically on drawing hands. While I’ve never been much of a draughtsman, that did lead to me becoming better at drawing hands than I was at any other body part. Which was kinda funny! past 9th grade, any drawings I did were just doodles, but the “hands” thing held up enough that one time a classmate saw me drawing hands on the edges of my classwork and was like, “Wow, are you really good at drawing?” And I said, “No.” And then I went back to sketching out my crush’s name in ASL finger spelling.
The distance from your wrist to where your fingers begin is the same as the distance from your chin to the tip of your nose. The whole hand is about double that distance.
I never could draw worth a fart, but I made a few bucks posing for figure drawing classes when I was in college. The things I remember from the work I saw: (1) a lot of students fudged on hands, feet, knees, and ears (they just didn’t draw them) and (2) the students who actually drew detailed representations of my crotch magnified my junk by a factor of two (I guess their eyes were just drawn there?). I don’t recall hips being a particular bugbear.
Oh man I loved figure drawing classes. A class is usually 3 or 4 hours of the day but loved every minute of it. Every stroke of charcoal or whatever medium is one stroke closer to improving your sense of anatomy
Yeah but fixing that problem would require giving money to hospitals, which the worthless oxygen thieves in power have decided is a great evil, because what if what if what if.
The problem is not a lack of money. The problem is the mass of laws and policies that create perverse incentives which ensure that much of the money spent doesn’t go to the most productive use. Bloated administrative costs soak up huge amounts of money while doing little to improve anyone’s health. Lack of competition and transparent pricing allow inefficiency to thrive, since providers lack a clear incentive to improve. The often massive disconnect between those paying for care and those receiving it means that patients may also lack motive to make sure they’re actually getting the best value. Given the many structural failings, trying to improve US healthcare by throwing more money at it is a lot like trying to fight a fire by smothering it with gasoline.
Thing is, the hands, feet and big brains all came as kind of a package. Adapting to walk upright allowed the forelimbs to specialize in grasping and manipulation. Keeping all this new stuff coordinated and taking maximum advantage of it required bigger, fancier brains. Eventually brain size and gestational development came to a rough equilibrium. Whether or not this balance is ideal is highly debatable, but the only thing natural selection cares about is “Does this work often enough for a population to sustain itself?”
I’ll just come out and say it, it ain’t hands, feet, hips or any of that that’s the hardest. As an AuDHD artist, the hardest part for me is even getting started on a new project.
i think there was like a viral tumblr post that was like “be a pervert of any kind and draw the same thing a hundred times” for studying anatomy and such
I also find that it is like singing, in that if one wants to show you the work that they have put in and done, they don’t want you to critique it but instead want compliments. Also people tend to be very sensitive if someone says that they were bad at it when they were a kid. Maybe because art, like someone’s voice, it is very personal. Having an “s” and “sh” sounds speech impediment, I would normally get criticism on how I talked or sang growing up. I have heard similar stories from others relating to both that and artwork.
I normally draw alright if I have something to reference (probably due to my scientific training where you would have to draw and label what you see in labs). I am absolutely horrible at drawing something without a reference.
Artists use references all the time. A science background would be great for the skill of drawing what you see, not what you think you see. Please feel proud to use that skill.
Modeling could be interesting for Jacob. He hates when people want to be close to him just cause of his body, but here there’s no intimacy in objectification, just abstraction. . .

today in #9chickweedlane i guess we're memory-holing again that 1997 story where amos and edda kissed for the first time after she, uh, got shot at school
It’s been awhile since I’ve more seriously read up on Ugaritic and Canaanite religions (alas, w/semi dated scholarship), but this is interesting, and not in a peaceful matriarchal fantasy kind of way.
Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg@theradr.bsky.social ⋅ 20d
If you do a close read not only of the Bible but the archeology,
it starts to look like the Israelites, & all but a couple of Judean kings, worshipped a goddess for pretty much the whole First Temple era.
The implications of this are... far ranging--
& her name might not be what we've believed.
I will say for the umpteenth time that the Democratic establishment is terrible at understanding enthusiasm math.
An energized base is crucial to winning fights-- electoral and otherwise-- because they will drag the low info folks out to vote and protest and engage.
You NEED that energy.
Gwen Snyder is uncivil@gwensnyder.bsky.social ⋅ 2d
It's not just that he and his policies are unpopular, there's a clear and demonstrated enthusiasm differential now.
His base is energetically absent, ours is livid and out in the streets.
Turns out the guy was Chuck Ayers, a nationally recognized cartoonist and creator of Crankshaft. He had a lot to say but the thing that struck me was that when he talked about whats going on now, I could see he was holding back emotion. All this still hurts him to see 55 (!!) years later.
Right now, these sweet kids have no clue how impactful this period in history will be for them, but I hope they will be proud of the time they made the best protest sign ever:
The green one that says “Trump eats boogers”

Katie@katiestp.bsky.social ⋅ 2d
We can’t make the actual event at the capitol today, so you’ll find us with the kids on University with our signs (and I might bring the megaphone too). Even if you can’t make it to the capitol - come out in your own neighborhoods, even if it’s for a few minutes. Be seen. Be heard. #nokings
At Comic-Con 2009 I was getting misgendered a fair bit and feeling anxious AF about it.
Robert Downey Jr. was doing a press conf for Sherlock Holmes. I wanted to shout out a question but hated drawing attn to myself. I did it anyway.
He gestured at me: "the lady in the blue shirt." I was so happy.

Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie
Please Quote this with your most minor celebrity interaction

these are not the same things
you had an abusive boyfriend
wilbur had a live-in sex stranger who he chose over your safety because he was getting laid, until the moment something almost happened to HIS GOLDFISH
wait ’til she gets to knees
or, like
…fingernails…?
To answer the fingernail question: Mostly alpha-keratin, like drawing it is really hard. I’ve seen some of your old drawings under your name-link thing, you are really good at it.
Or, if she’s anything like Rob Liefeld, feet.
I did feet in the Patreon post, kinda hate repeating myself
Or any other part of human anatomy.
I think I beat Anna here. You’re right Joyce, hips are bullcrap.
Took too long typing.
you might have beat her if you hadn’t tried to comment on it
You beat her, she just used her namesake power.
One can’t say, “first post,” grasshopper. One must be first post.
Sillybilly no one beats Ann, no one
The model is currently hiding their hands behind their back, just to be nice to Joyce.
Hips don’t lie, but they are full of shit.
Personal hygiene is important.
Hips can’t be bullcrap! They don’t lie!
At least, Shakira’s dont…
Shakira’s hips are currently wanted for tax evasion.
Hips don’t lie but they do confront you with uncomfortable truths
There are so many scattered bits of paper in my room that consist of drawings of faces AND NOTHING ELSE because everything else sucks. SOOO many
It’s wild how much of drawing nsfw art is getting irritated at the human form
I wonder how many furry artists got their start by being all “Gah, all my feet look like weird paws! Maybe I’ll just make her a wolf or some shit, then it’ll look normal.”
Just cover it all in fur and then the tiny little details don’t matter type of thing?
As an avid collector of furry art I can say that the majority of the artwork I have commissioned either doesn’t include feet, or has the character(s) wearing shoes so you may be right.
People think it must be hot but it’s mostly frustrating. Especially if you’re also trying to capture a likeness
Hands are still worse, but Joyce has a point
Oh hey, I’m Malaya now!
In my middle school art class, we learned about how drawing hands is The Worst, and then had a project focused specifically on drawing hands. While I’ve never been much of a draughtsman, that did lead to me becoming better at drawing hands than I was at any other body part. “went back to sketching out my crush’s name in ASL finger spelling”
**eyes widen and hearts float in air nearby**
**voice that only increases in pitch** That is adorable!
This ended up being a first draft, and I ended up giving a later sketch to her, and like. This was me trying to be subtle about things.
i remember seeing a semi-popular tweet that was like “plot twist: an artist who’s /only/ good at hands” lol
I learned a trick to drawing hands.
The distance from your wrist to where your fingers begin is the same as the distance from your chin to the tip of your nose. The whole hand is about double that distance.
I feel like just saying ‘your middle finger is as long as your palm’ would’ve been easier
Holy shit, it’s pretty close.
This feels like that middle school prank.
Possible spoiler and probable wigguns, but: Wilde Life, page 385. Paz is just so ridiculously good.
Hey, I have the top comment on that page!
…And I stand by it.
I was not previously familiar with this comic. I have no read through the entire thing. This was an enjoyable unplanned use of my morning.
So ridiculously good? What are you talking about, those arms clearly have too many elbows. Has the artist even seen an arm before?
(This is jokes, Wilde Life is phenomenal)
I never could draw worth a fart, but I made a few bucks posing for figure drawing classes when I was in college. The things I remember from the work I saw: (1) a lot of students fudged on hands, feet, knees, and ears (they just didn’t draw them) and (2) the students who actually drew detailed representations of my crotch magnified my junk by a factor of two (I guess their eyes were just drawn there?). I don’t recall hips being a particular bugbear.
Maybe your junk was bigger than you understood.
I wish
Why do I feel this is Willis speaking from personal experience.
I feel like that can apply to most things Joyce has said, except possibly those relating to the kidnapping and the bad periods.
Are you SURE about the kidnapping
Perhaps the most relatable thing Joyce has ever said.
Oh man I loved figure drawing classes. A class is usually 3 or 4 hours of the day but loved every minute of it. Every stroke of charcoal or whatever medium is one stroke closer to improving your sense of anatomy
Tonight’s strip brought to you by the author.
You know they can hear you, right?
Hips don’t have ears, silly.
Yes, but whether they give half a damn is another story.
“Hips are hard to draw” isn’t really an insult to someone’s body, fortunately.
wait ’til she sees someone with hip dips
or Jennifer
Look, Shakira warned you, Joyce! If you didn’t understand the message that isn’t her problem.
Uh uh. Not happening, gravitar roulette gods.
Gotta roll 9 times for a 50/50 chance of getting the one you want.
(wait a minute I should be doing platformer game math, not probability math, mmmmffff)
hell it ain’t 9 times it’s 20 times OKAY FOCUS
Blowjob Cat too intense?
My first thought: Everyone in the room is staring at Joyce funny because of that outburst.
My second thought: Everyone in the room is staring at Joyce sympathetically because of that outburst.
Half-and-half?
Bipedalism has its disadvantages, especially for child birth (unfun fact: the US has a terrible rate of death in child-birth for a developed nation).
Yeah but fixing that problem would require giving money to hospitals, which the worthless oxygen thieves in power have decided is a great evil, because what if what if what if.
There’s also the fact that their buddies rake in mountains of cash from the status quo.
The problem is not a lack of money. The problem is the mass of laws and policies that create perverse incentives which ensure that much of the money spent doesn’t go to the most productive use. Bloated administrative costs soak up huge amounts of money while doing little to improve anyone’s health. Bipedalism is fine, so long as you don’t start selecting for brain size
Why not just have it mature in a pouch like marsupials instead?
Why can’t we just lay eggs
Settle down, Kakyoin.
What?
*Googles*
…Yeah, okay.
You want to push out an egg large enough to contain a baby?
Thing is, the hands, feet and big brains all came as kind of a package. Adapting to walk upright allowed the forelimbs to specialize in grasping and manipulation. Keeping all this new stuff coordinated and taking maximum advantage of it required bigger, fancier brains. Eventually brain size and gestational development came to a rough equilibrium. Whether or not this balance is ideal is highly debatable, but the only thing natural selection cares about is “Does this work often enough for a population to sustain itself?”
Yeah, that’s one of the most persistent wrong ideas about evolution: it doesn’t select for “perfect” or “better”, just “good enough.”
On the other hand, Joyce is proof that figuring out hips is worthwhile ^^
My problem has always been limb length, but yeah, hips can be irritating.
I am alright with hands and passable on feet.
I’ve only done one art lesson like this and by gods, the frustration at not being able to get the leg right.
I’ll just come out and say it, it ain’t hands, feet, hips or any of that that’s the hardest. As an AuDHD artist, the hardest part for me is even getting started on a new project.
Get started on a new project right now, or I’ll be left with no choice but to write you a sternly worded email.
Just contacted the client for details, gathering reference materials…
Ah; anatomy is a real pain
i think there was like a viral tumblr post that was like “be a pervert of any kind and draw the same thing a hundred times” for studying anatomy and such
lol hope it doesn’t hit the person next to her tho i’d ope there’d be enough space between ppl lol
God, yeah, from what I hear there’s no sexiness in figure drawing. Just misery and dirtied fingers.
I also find that it is like singing, in that if one wants to show you the work that they have put in and done, they don’t want you to critique it but instead want compliments. not even the sexy kind of dirty fingers

Artists use references all the time. A science background would be great for the skill of drawing what you see, not what you think you see. Please feel proud to use that skill.
Seconded.
Hips are indeed bullshit, Joyce is right
But they’re nice, and they don’t lie.
Okay, this is a bit of a longshot, but hear me out. I get the feeling this comic may be autobiographical.
My hip has been hurting me nonstop for like two days for no discernible reason. They are totes bullshit.
Nah, drawing hips are the best part.
My worst part in life drawing is determine the correct size of anything, because you don’t have any measure to guide you.
That means the worst part of lufe drawing is everything. hahaha
*belatedly plays “The Hippie Hippie Shake” on the hacked Muzak*
I haven’t taken a runner; I work mostly morning shifts now.
Not starting to feel it’s right, then?
novelty lost its appeal fast eh ?
I wonder if jacob is going to show up as a model soon and make joe jealous
Modeling could be interesting for Jacob. He hates when people want to be close to him just cause of his body, but here there’s no intimacy in objectification, just abstraction. . .
I’ve been enjoying the meta-jokes about drawing. Hips and shoulders are truly a pain.
Trying to draw realistic human figures in general is a pain. If I have to draw a person I pretty much resort to stick figures.
These hips did lie, and they lied to you.
Artist dealing with fully formed hips: Rage
Doctor dealing with totally crushed hips from an “accident”: Despair
just keep practicing, the frustration is femoral.
Never had much issue with hips myself. Shoulders give me more trouble. And elbows screw elbows elbows can burn in a fire
